Low noise and high repetition rate optical frequency combs are desirable for many applications from timekeeping to precision spectroscopy. For example, gigahertz repetition rate sources greatly increase the acquisition speed of spectra in a dual-comb modality when compared to lower repetition rate sources, while still maintaining sufficient instantaneous resolution to resolve ro-vibrational signatures from molecules in a variety of conditions. In this paper, we present the stabilization and characterization of a turnkey commercial 1~GHz mode-locked laser that operates at telecom wavelengths (1.56 $μ$m). Fiber amplification and spectral broadening result in the high signal-to-noise ratio detection and stabilization of $\textit{f}_{\textit{ceo}}$ with 438 mrad of residual phase noise (integrated from 10$^2$ to 10$^7$ Hz). Simultaneously, we stabilize the beatnote between the nearest comb mode and a cavity stabilized continuous-wave laser at 1.55 $μ$m with 41 mrad of residual phase noise (integrated from 10$^2$ to 10$^7$ Hz). This robust, self-referenced comb system is built with off-the-shelf polarization-maintaining fiber components and will be useful for a wide range of low noise frequency comb applications that benefit from the increased repetition rate.
Dissipative Kerr soliton (DKS) microcomb has emerged as an enabling technology that revolutionizes a wide range of applications in both basic science and technological innovation. Reliable turnkey operation with sub-opticalcycle and sub-femtosecond timing jitter is key to the success of many intriguing microcomb applications at the intersection of ultrafast optics and microwave electronics. Here we propose a novel approach to demonstrate the first turnkey Brillouin-DKS frequency comb. Our approach with a Chimera cavity offers essential benefits that are not attainable previously, including pha…
Microresonator-based optical frequency comb (microcomb) has the potential to revolutionize the accuracy of frequency synthesizer in radar and communication applications. However, fundamental limit exists for low noise microcomb generation, especially in low size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C) package. Here we resolve this limit, by the demonstration of an automated turnkey microcomb, operating close to its low quantum-limited phase noise, within a compact setup size of 85 mm * 90 mm * 25 mm. High quality factor fiber Fabry-Perot resonator (FFPR), with Q up to 4.0 * 10^9, is the key for both …
In this letter, we experimentally demonstrate low noise 300GHz wave generation based on a Kerr microresonator frequency comb operating in soliton regime. The spectral purity of a 10GHz GPS-disciplined dielectric resonant oscillator is transferred to the 300GHz repetition rate frequency of the soliton comb through an optoelectronic phase-locked loop. Two adjacent comb lines beat on a uni-travelling carrier photodiode emitting the 300GHz millimeter-wave signal into a waveguide. In an out-of-loop measurement we have measured the 300GHz power spectral density of phase noise to be -88dBc/Hz, -105dB…
A fully stabilized mid-infrared optical frequency comb spanning from 2.9 to 3.4 um is described. The comb is based on half-harmonic generation in a femtosecond optical parametric oscillator, which transfers the high phase coherence of a fully stabilized near-infrared Er-doped fiber laser comb to the mid-infrared region. The method is simple, as no phase-locked loops or reference lasers are needed. Precise locking of optical frequencies of the mid-infrared comb to the pump comb is experimentally verified at sub-20 mHz level, which corresponds to a fractional statistical uncertainty of 2x10-16 a…
We perform the first theoretical modeling of the spectral-temporal dynamics of parametric microresonator comb generation with octave-spanning bandwidths through use of the Lugiato-Lefever model extended to include higher-order dispersion and self-steepening. We show that three distinct stages are necessary to achieve single-pulse modelocking and ultrabroadband, stabilized combs. Our simulations agree well with previous experimental demonstrations and predict many of the observed features, including multi-pulse generation, dispersive wave generation, modelocking and comb stabilization.
We stabilize a chip-scale Si3N4 phase-locked Kerr frequency comb via locking the pump laser to an independent stable high-Q reference microresonator and locking the comb spacing to an external microwave oscillator. In this comb, the pump laser shift induces negligible impact on the comb spacing change. This scheme is a step towards miniaturization of the stabilized Kerr comb system as the microresonator reference can potentially be integrated on-chip. Fractional instability of the optical harmonics of the stabilized comb is limited by the microwave oscillator used for comb spacing lock below 1…
We present a compact iodine-stabilized laser system at 633 nm, based on a distributed-feedback laser diode. Within a footprint of $27\times 15$ cm$^2$ the system provides 5 mW of frequency stabilized light from a single-mode fiber. Its performance was evaluated in comparison to Cs clocks representing primary frequency standards, realizing the SI unit Hz via an optical frequency comb. With the best suited absorption line the laser reaches a fractional frequency instability below $10^{-10}$ for averaging times above 10 s. The performance was investigated at several iodine lines and a model was d…
We demonstrate a compact 29.3 GHz visible astro-comb covering the spectrum from 560nm to 700nm. A 837 MHz Yb:fiber laser frequency comb phase locked to a Rb clock served as the seed comb to ensure the frequency stability and high side mode suppression ratio. After the visible super-continuum generation, a cavity-length-fixed Fabry-Perot cavity made by ultra-low expansion glass was utilized to filter the comb teeth for eliminating the rapid active dithering. The mirrors were home-made complementary chirped mirrors pair with zero dispersion and high reflection to guarantee no mode skipping. Thes…
The broadband, coherent nature of narrow-linewidth fiber frequency combs is exploited to measure the full complex spectrum of a molecular gas through multi-heterodyne spectroscopy. We measure the absorption and phase shift experienced by each of 155,000 individual frequency comb lines, spaced by 100 MHz and spanning from 1495 nm to 1620 nm, after passing through a hydrogen cyanide gas. The measured phase spectrum agrees with Kramers-Kronig transformation of the absorption spectrum. This technique can provide a full complex spectrum rapidly, over wide bandwidths, and with hertz-level accuracy.
Long-wavelength mid-infrared frequency combs with high power and flexible tunability are highly desired for molecular spectroscopy, including investigation of large molecules such as C60. We present a high power, phase-stabilized frequency comb near 10 μm, generated by a synchronously-pumped, singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on AgGaSe2. The OPO can be continuously tuned from 8.4 to 9.5 μm, with a maximum average idler power of 100 mW at the center wavelength of 8.5 μm. Both the repetition rate (frep) and the carrier-envelop offset frequency (fceo) of the idler wave are…
We demonstrate an optical frequency comb based on an erbium-doped-fiber femtosecond laser with the nonlinear polarization evolution scheme. The repetition rate of the laser is about 209 MHz. By controlling an intra-cavity electro-optic modulator and a piezo-transducer, the repetition rate can be stabilized with high servo bandwidth in a range of 3 kHz, enabling long-term repetition rate phase-locking. The in-loop frequency stability of repetition rate is about 1.6E-13 at 1 second integration time, limited by the measurement system; and it is inversely proportional to integration time in short …
We demonstrated that an iodine stabilized Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) diode based laser system lasing at a wavelength in close proximity to $λ= 633\,$nm could be used as an alternative laser source to the He-Ne lasers in both scientific and industrial metrology. This yields additional advantages besides the optical frequency stability and coherence: inherent traceability, wider optical frequency tuning range, higher output power and high frequency modulation capability. We experimentally investigated the characteristics of the laser source in two major steps: first using a wavelength met…
We present a high-power optical parametric oscillator-based frequency comb in the mid-infrared wavelength region using periodically poled lithium niobate. The system is synchronously pumped by a 10-W femtosecond Yb:fiber laser centered at 1.07 um and is singly resonant for the signal. The idler (signal) wavelength can be continuously tuned from 2.8 to 4.8 um (1.76 to 1.37 um) with a simultaneous bandwidth as high as 0.3 um and a maximum average idler output power of 1.50 W. We also demonstrate the performance of the stabilized comb by recording the heterodyne beat with a narrow-linewidth diode…
Optical frequency combs, coherent light sources that connect optical frequencies with microwave oscillations, have become the enabling tool for precision spectroscopy, optical clockwork and attosecond physics over the past decades. Current benchmark systems are self-referenced femtosecond mode-locked lasers, but four-wave-mixing in high-Q resonators have emerged as alternative platforms. Here we report the generation and full stabilization of CMOS-compatible optical frequency combs. The spiral microcomb's two degrees-of-freedom, one of the comb line and the native 18 GHz comb spacing, are firs…
A frequency-stabilized light source emitting at 556 nm is realized by frequency-doubling a 1112-nm laser, which is phase-locked to a fiber-based optical frequency comb. The 1112-nm laser is either an ytterbium (Yb)-doped distributed feedback fiber laser or a master-slave laser system that uses an external cavity diode laser as a master laser. We have achieved the continuous frequency stabilization of the light source over a five-day period. With the light source, we have completed the second-stage magneto-optical trapping (MOT) of Yb atoms using the 1S0 - 3P1 intercombination transition. The t…
We report an all-polarization-maintaining fiber optic approach to generating sub-2 cycle pulses at 2 μm and a corresponding octave-spanning optical frequency comb. Our configuration leverages mature Er:fiber laser technology at 1.5 μm to provide a seed pulse for a thulium-doped fiber amplifier that outputs 330 mW average power at 100 MHz repetition rate. Following amplification, nonlinear self-compression in fiber decreases the pulse duration to 9.5 fs, or 1.4 optical cycles. Approximately 32 % of the energy sits within the pulse peak, and the polarization extinction ratio is more than 15 dB. …
Dissipative Kerr soliton microcombs in microresonators has enabled fundamental advances in chip scale precision metrology, communication, spectroscopy, and parallel signal processing. Here we demonstrate polarization diverse soliton transitions and deterministic switching dynamics of a self stabilized microcomb in a strongly coupled dispersion-managed microresonator driven with a single pump laser. The switching dynamics are induced by the differential thermorefractivity between coupled transverse magnetic and transverse electric supermodes during the forward backward pump detunings. The achie…
Frequency dissemination in phase-stabilized optical fiber networks for metrological frequency comparisons and precision measurements are promising candidates to overcome the limitations imposed by satellite techniques. However, network constraints restrict the availability of dedicated channels in the commonly-used C-band. Here, we demonstrate the dissemination of an SI-traceable ultrastable optical frequency in the L-band over a 456 km fiber network with ring topology, in which telecommunication data traffic occupies the full C-band. We characterize the optical phase noise and evaluate a link…
Optical frequency comb synthesizers (FCs) [1] are laser sources covering a broad spectral range with a number of discrete, equally spaced and highly coherent frequency components, fully controlled through only two parameters: the frequency separation between adjacent modes and the carrier offset frequency. Providing a phase-coherent link between the optical and the microwave/radio-frequency regions [2], FCs have become groundbreaking tools for precision measurements[3,4]. Despite these inherent advantages, developing miniaturized comb sources across the whole infrared (IR), with an independent…
We describe an apparatus for the implementation of hybrid optomechanical systems at 4 K. The platform is based on a high-finesse, micrometer-scale fiber Fabry-Perot cavity, which can be widely tuned using piezoelectric positioners. A mechanical resonator can be positioned within the cavity in the object-in-the-middle configuration by a second set of positioners. A high level of stability is achieved without sacrificing either performance or tunability, through the combination of a stiff mechanical design, passive vibration isolation, and an active Pound-Drever-Hall feedback lock incorporating …
We have developed a technique to measure the absolute frequencies of optical transitions by using an evacuated Rb-stabilized ring-cavity resonator as a transfer cavity. We study possible wavelength-dependent errors due to dispersion at the cavity mirrors by measuring the frequency of the same transition in the $D_2$ line of Cs at three cavity lengths. We find no discernable change in values within our error of 30 kHz. Our values are consistent with measurements using the frequency-comb technique and have similar accuracy.
Stabilized optical frequency combs (OFC) can have remarkable levels of coherence across their broad spectral bandwidth. We study the scaling of the optical noise across hundreds of nanometers of optical spectra. We measure the residual phase noise between two OFC's (having offset frequencies $f^{(1)}_0 $ and $f^{(2)}_0$) referenced to a common cavity-stabilized narrow linewidth CW laser. Their relative offset frequency $ Δf_0 = f^{(2)}_0 - f^{(1)}_0 $, which appears across their entire spectra, provides a convenient measure of the phase noise. By comparing $Δf_0$ at different spectral regions,…
Microresonator-based soliton frequency combs - microcombs - have recently emerged to offer low-noise, photonic-chip sources for optical measurements. Owing to nonlinear-optical physics, microcombs can be built with various materials and tuned or stabilized with a consistent framework. Some applications require phase stabilization, including optical-frequency synthesis and measurements, optical-frequency division, and optical clocks. Partially stabilized microcombs can also benefit applications, such as oscillators, ranging, dual-comb spectroscopy, wavelength calibration, and optical communicat…
We study the mechanical stability of a tunable high-finesse microcavity under ambient conditions and investigate light-induced effects that can both suppress and excite mechanical fluctuations. As an enabling step, we demonstrate the ultra-precise electronic stabilization of a microcavity. We then show that photothermal mirror expansion can provide high-bandwidth feedback and improve cavity stability by almost two orders of magnitude. At high intracavity power, we observe self-oscillations of mechanical resonances of the cavity. We explain the observations by a dynamic photothermal instability…
Normal group velocity dispersion (GVD) microcombs offer high comb line power and high pumping efficiency compared to bright pulse microcombs. The recent demonstration of normal GVD microcombs using CMOS-foundry-produced microresonators is an important step towards scalable production. However, the chromatic dispersion of CMOS devices is large and impairs generation of broadband microcombs. Here, we report the development of a microresonator in which GVD is reduced due to a couple-ring resonator configuration. Operating in the turnkey self-injection-locking mode, the resonator is hybridly integ…
We report ultra-low phase-noise microwave generation at a 9.6 GHz carrier frequency from optical frequency combs based on diode-pumped solid-state lasers emitting at telecom wavelength and referenced to a common cavity-stabilized continuous-wave laser. Using a novel fibered polarization-maintaining pulse interleaver, a single-oscillator phase-noise floor of -171 dBc/Hz has been measured with commercial PIN InGaAs photodiodes, constituting a record for this type of detector. Also, a direct optical measurement of the stabilized frequency combs timing jitter was performed using a balanced optical…
We present and investigate different external cavity diode laser (ECDL) configurations for the manipulation of neutrals atoms, wavelength-stabilized by a narrow-band high transmission interference filter. A novel diode laser, providing high output power of more than 1 W, with a linewidth of less than 200 kHz, based on a self-seeded tapered amplifier chip has been developed. Additionally, we compare the optical and spectral properties of two laser systems based on common laser diodes, differing in their coating, as well as one, based on a distributed-feedback (DFB) diode. The linear cavity setu…
We report a mode-locked Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser with 5GHz repetition rate. Spectral broadening of the 24 fs pulses in a microstructured fiber yields an octave-spanning spectrum and permits self-referencing and active stabilization of the emitted femtosecond laser frequency comb (FLFC). The individual modes of the 5GHz FLFC are resolved with a high-resolution spectrometer based on a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) spectral disperser. Isolation of single comb elements at a microwatt average power level is demonstrated. The combination of the high-power, frequency-stabilized 5GHz laser…
Dual terahertz (THz) comb spectroscopy is a promising methods for high accuracy, high resolution, and broadband THz spectroscopy because the mode-resolved THz comb spectrum possesses both characteristics of broadband THz radiation and narrow-linewidth continuous-wave THz radiation and all frequency mode of THz comb can be phase-locked to a microwave frequency standard. However, requirement of stabilized dual femtosecond lasers has often hindered wide use of this method. In this article, we demonstrated the adaptive sampling, dual THz comb spectroscopy, enabling use of free-running dual femtose…
THz oscillators generated via frequency-multiplication of microwaves are facing difficulty in achieving low phase noise. Photonics-based techniques, in which optical two tones are translated to a THz wave through opto-electronic conversion, are promising if the relative phase noise between the two tones is well suppressed. Here, a THz ($\approx$ 560 GHz) wave with a low phase noise is provided by a frequency-stabilized, dissipative Kerr microresonator soliton comb. The repetition frequency of the comb is stabilized to a long fiber in a two-wavelength delayed self-heterodyne interferometer, sig…
We combine a tunable continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator and a femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser frequency comb to provide a phase-coherent bridge between the visible and mid-infrared spectral ranges. As a first demonstration of this new technique we perform a direct frequency comparison between an iodine stabilized Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm and an infrared methane optical frequency standard at $3.39 μ$m.
We present a laser system with a linewidth and long-term frequency stability at the 50 kHz level. It is based on a Ti:Sapphire laser emitting radiation at 882 nm which is referenced to an atomic transition. For this, the length of an evacuated transfer cavity is stabilized to a reference laser at 780 nm locked to the $^{85}$Rb D$_2$-line via modulation transfer spectroscopy. Gapless frequency tuning of the spectroscopy laser is realized using the sideband locking technique to the transfer cavity. In this configuration, the linewidth of the spectroscopy laser is derived from the transfer cavity…
Dual-comb interferometry is based on self-heterodyning two optical frequency combs, with corresponding mapping of the optical spectrum into the radio-frequency domain. The dual-comb enables diverse applications, including metrology, fast high-precision spectroscopy with high signal-to-noise ratio, distance ranging, and coherent optical communications. However, current dual-frequency-comb systems are designed for research applications and typically rely on scientific equipment and bulky mode-locked lasers. Here we demonstrate for the first time a fully integrated power-efficient dual-microcomb …
Optical frequency comb (OFC) technology has been the cornerstone for scientific breakthroughs such as precision frequency metrology, redefinition of time, extreme light-matter interaction, and attosecond sciences. While the current mode-locked laser-based OFC has had great success in extending the scientific frontier, its use in real-world applications beyond the laboratory setting remains an unsolved challenge. Microresonator-based OFCs, or Kerr frequency comb, have recently emerged as a candidate solution to the challenge because of their preferable size, weight, and power consumption (SWaP)…
Dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs) have been generated via injection locking of chipscale microresonators to continuous-wave (CW) III-V lasers. This advance has enabled fully integrated hybrid microcomb systems that operate in turnkey mode and can access microwave repetition rates. Yet, CW-driven DKS exhibits low energy conversion efficiency and high optical power threshold, especially when the repetition rate is within the microwave range that is convenient for direct detection with off-the-shelf electronics. Efficient DKS can be generated by spatiotemporally structured light (i.e., pulsed pump…
