We present here an empirical method aimed at decreasing the error in the significant wave height calculated through the Wave Watch model. The errors are calculated as the difference between the modeled and the locally observed measurement. We hypothesize that this error would be reduced if the model used a well calibrated method to account for thermal variations within the surface boundary layer. We compared then this error for 2015 to the air sea temperature difference in order to find a potential relationship among them. The statistical analysis performed show a clear correlation between these variables, hinting for the need of introducing a correction for stability based on a linear relationship between the error and the air ocean temperature difference.
With the aim of assessing the merits of the new source function proposed earlier in Polnikov (2005),it was tested and validated by means of the modification of the well known model WAVEWATCH-III. Assessment was done on the basis of comparing the wave simulation results found from both models against the buoy data obtained in three oceanic regions: eastern and western parts of the North Atlantic, and the Barenz Sea. First of all, incorporation of the new source function into the numerical codes of WAVEWATCH was done, and this modified version of WAVEWATCH was fitted and tested by standard tests…
The Model Coupling Executable Library (MCEL), developed at the University of Southern Mississippi's Center of Higher Learning, has been successfully used to couple the Coupled Ocean/Atmospheric Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) and the ocean wave model WAVEWATCH. An example of its application is shown for Hurricane Gordon, showing that two-way coupling results affects boundary layer physics differently than one-way coupling --- in this case, resulting in larger z_o and, consequently, larger surface fluxes and a more intense hurricane. However, since analyzing MCEL is difficult because the w…
Stochastic wind sea is an intermediate small-scale physical process responsible for the state of the atmospheric boundary layer and the water upper layer, having dynamics of all scales. To describe behavior of this system, one could use the mathematical formalization based on a spectral evolution model for wind waves. To this end, it needs a well-designed numerical model derived from the principal physical equations. On this way certain theoretical problems take place. At present some of these problems are solved, that gives possibility to construct a lot of numerical wind wave models, the lat…
Over recent decades, the Arctic Ocean has experienced dramatic changes due to climate change. Retreating sea ice has opened up large areas of ocean, resulting in an enhanced wave climate. Taking into account the intense seasonality and the rapid changes to the Arctic climate, a non-stationary approach is applied to time-varying statistical properties to investigate historical trends of extreme values. The analysis is based on a 28-year wave hindcast (from 1991 to 2018) carried out with the WAVEWATCH III wave model forced by ERA5 wind speed. The results show notable seasonal differences and rob…
On the basis of the author's earlier results, a new source function for a numerical wind-wave model optimized by the criterion of accuracy and speed of calculation is substantiated. The proposed source function includes (a) an optimized version of the discrete interaction approximation for parametrization of the nonlinear evolution mechanism, (b) a generalized empirical form of the input term modified by adding a special block of the dynamic boundary layer of the atmosphere, and (c) a dissipation term quadratic in the wave spectrum. Particular attention is given to a theoretical substantiation…
Machine-learning identification of the variability of mean velocity and turbulence intensity for wakes generated by onshore wind turbines: Cluster analysis of wind LiDAR measurements
Atmospheric transient eddies and low-frequency flow contribution to the ocean surface wave climate in the North Atlantic during boreal winter is investigated (1980 - 2016). We conduct a set of numerical simulations with a state-of-the-art spectral wave model Wavewatch III forced by decomposed wind fields derived from the ERA-Interim reanalysis (0.7° horizontal resolution). Synoptic-scale processes (2-10 day bandpassed winds) are found to have the largest impact on the formation of wind waves in the western mid-latitude North Atlantic along the North American and western Greenland coasts. The e…
The time-space evolution of the field is described by the transport equation for the 2-dimensional wave energy spectrum density, S(x,t), spread in the space, x, and time, t. This equation has the forcing named the source function, F, depending on both the wave spectrum, S, and the external wave-making factors: local wind, W(x, t), and local current, U(x, t). The source function contains certain physical mechanisms responsible for a wave spectrum evolution. It is used to distinguish three terms in function F: the wind-wave energy exchange mechanism, In; the energy conservative mechanism of nonl…
The paper describes the existing operational sea state forecast system of NIMH- BAS for sea state in the Black Sea and our current progress on the implementation of an additional component for the forecasts of wind waves in the Bulgarian coastal zone. Wind Waves and especially the extreme ones, occurring during severe storms are a major hazard for the coastal zone, causing significant damages to the infrastructure, threat for the human lives and also causing significant damages to the protected areas around the coast. The numerical model WAVEWATCH III is in use for wind waves forecasts for the…
We characterise the long-term variability of European near-surface wind speeds using 142 years of data from the Twentieth Century Reanalysis (20CR), and consider the potential of such long-baseline climate data sets for wind energy applications. The low resolution of the 20CR would severely restrict its use on its own for wind farm site-screening. We therefore perform a simple statistical calibration to link it to the higher-resolution ERA-Interim data set (ERAI), such that the adjusted 20CR data has the same wind speed distribution at each location as ERAI during their common period. Using th…
We present initial results of a study on the variability of wind speeds across Europe over the past 140 yr, making use of the recent Twentieth Century Reanalysis data set, which includes uncertainty estimates from an ensemble method of reanalysis. Maps of the means and standard deviations of daily wind speeds, and the Weibull-distribution parameters, show the expected features, such as the strong, highly-variable wind in the north-east Atlantic. We do not find any clear, strong long-term trends in wind speeds across Europe, and the variability between decades is large. We examine how different…
The variability of wind-generated electricity can be reduced by aggregating the outputs of wind generation plants spread over a large geographic area. In this chapter we utilize Monte Carlo simulations to investigate upper bounds on the degree of achievable smoothing and clarify how the degree of smoothing depends on the number of plants and on the size of the geographic area over which they are spread.
The main objection to Speirs, McGowan, Steinhoff and Bromwich [Int. J. Climatol. 33: 945-958] work arises from the lack of analyses of the probability distribution functions of underlying processes leading to wind formation of which velocities are measured by automated weather stations and reported in the paper. Mathematically a rigorous definition of calculating the correlation coefficient (Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient) of averages does not exist. Therefore the authors numbers as given in Table II represent a set of randomly calculated figures. The authors suggestion in rela…
We use reanalysis data to investigate the daily co-variability of wind and solar irradiance in Britain, and its implications for renewable energy supply balancing. The joint distribution of daily-mean wind speeds and irradiances shows that irradiance has a much stronger seasonal cycle than wind, due to the rotational tilt of the Earth. Irradiance is weakly anticorrelated with wind speed throughout the year ($-0.4 \lesssim ρ\lesssim -0.2$): there is a weak tendency for windy days to be cloudier. This is particularly true in Atlantic-facing regions (western Scotland, south-west England). The eas…
To calculate the wind-waves in the Indian Ocean (IO), the wind field for the period from 1998 to 2009 was used, obtained from the NCEP/NOAA archive, and numerical model WAM (Cycle-4) was applied, modified by the new source function proposed in Polnikov (2005). Based on buoy data for the Indian Ocean, the fitting of the modified model WAM was done, which provides the win in accuracy of calculations on 35%, in comparison with the original model. All the further calculations of the wave fields in IO were made for these model settings. At the first stage, the analysis of the simulation results inv…

Machine learning models have been employed to perform either physics-free data-driven or hybrid dynamical downscaling of climate data. Most of these implementations operate over relatively small downscaling factors because of the challenge of recovering fine-scale information from coarse data. This limits their compatibility with many global climate model outputs, often available between $\sim$50--100 km resolution, to scales of interest such as cloud resolving or urban scales. This study systematically examines the capability of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to downscale surface wind s…
Calculations of annual energy production (AEP) from a wind power plant-whether based on preconstruction or operational data-are critical for wind plant financial transactions. A popular industry practice is to assume that different uncertainty components within an AEP calculation are uncorrelated and can therefore be combined as the sum of their squares. We assess the practical validity of this assumption for operational-based uncertainty, by performing operational AEP estimates for more than 470 wind plants in the United States, mostly in simple terrain. We apply a Monte Carlo approach to qua…

Dangerous large wave put the coastal communities and vessels operating under threats and wave predictions are strongly needed for early warnings. While numerical wave models, such as WAVEWATCH III (WW3), are useful to provide spatially continuous information to supplement in situ observations, however, they often require intensive computational costs. An attractive alternative is machine-learning method, which can potentially provide comparable performance of numerical wave models but only requires a small fraction of computational costs. In this study, we applied and tested a novel machine le…

This study explores wind energy resources in different locations through the Gulf of Oman and also their future variability due climate change impacts. In this regard, EC-EARTH near surface wind outputs obtained from CORDEX-MENA simulations are used for historical and future projection of the energy. The ERA5 wind data are employed to assess suitability of the climate model. Moreover, the ERA5 wave data over the study area are applied to compute sea surface roughness as an important variable for converting near surface wind speeds to those of wind speed at turbine hub-height. Considering the p…
