Identities that relate projections of Raviart-Thomas finite element vector fields to discrete gradients of Crouzeix-Raviart finite element functions are derived under general conditions. Various implications such as discrete convex duality results and a characterization of the image of the projection of the Crouzeix-Ravaiart space onto elementwise constant functions are deduced.
We investigate the piecewise linear nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviar and the lowest order Raviart-Thomas finite-element methods for the Poisson problem on three-dimensional anisotropic meshes. We first give error estimates of the Crouzeix-Raviart and the Raviart-Thomas finite-element approximate problems. We next present the equivalence between the Raviart-Thomas finite-element method and the enriched Crouzeix-Raviart finite-element method. We emphasise that we do not impose either shape-regular or maximum-angle condition during mesh partitioning. Numerical results confirm the results that we obt…
Asymptotic expansions are derived for eigenvalues produced by both the Crouzeix-Raviart element and the enriched Crouzeix--Raviart element. The expansions are optimal in the sense that extrapolation eigenvalues based on them admit a fourth order convergence provided that exact eigenfunctions are smooth enough. The major challenge in establishing the expansions comes from the fact that the canonical interpolation of both nonconforming elements lacks a crucial superclose property, and the nonconformity of both elements. The main idea is to employ the relation between the lowest-order mixed Ravia…
We consider non-conforming discretizations of the stationary Stokes equation in three spatial dimensions by Crouzeix-Raviart type elements. The original definition in the seminal paper by M. Crouzeix and P.-A. Raviart in 1973 is implicit and also contains substantial freedom for a concrete choice. In this paper, we introduce basic Crouzeix-Raviart basis functions in 3D in analogy to the 2D case in a fully explicit way. We prove that this basic CrouzeixRaviart element for the Stokes equation is inf-sup stable for polynomial degree $k =2$ (quadratic velocity approximation). We identify spurious …
We investigate the convergence of the Crouzeix-Raviart finite element method for variational problems with non-autonomous integrands that exhibit non-standard growth conditions. While conforming schemes fail due to the Lavrentiev gap phenomenon, we prove that the solution of the Crouzeix-Raviart scheme converges to a global minimiser. Numerical experiments illustrate the performance of the scheme and give additional analytical insights.
Two asymptotically exact a posteriori error estimates are proposed for eigenvalues by the nonconforming Crouzeix--Raviart and enriched Crouzeix-- Raviart elements. The main challenge in the design of such error estimators comes from the nonconformity of the finite element spaces used. Such nonconformity causes two difficulties, the first one is the construction of high accuracy gradient recovery algorithms, the second one is a computable high accuracy approximation of a consistency error term. The first difficulty was solved for both nonconforming elements in a previous paper. Two methods are …
The Crouzeix-Raviart triangular finite elements are $\inf$-$\sup$ stable for the Stokes equations for any mesh with at least one interior vertex. This result affirms a {\em conjecture of Crouzeix-Falk} from 1989 for $p=3$. Our proof applies to {\em any odd degree} $p\ge 3$ and hence Crouzeix-Raviart triangular finite elements of degree $p$ in two dimensions and the piecewise polynomials of degree $p-1$ with vanishing integral form a stable Stokes pair {\em for all positive integers} $p$.
A nonconforming finite element method for the Stokes equations using the Crouzeix-Raviart element for the velocity and the standard linear element for the pressure
In this paper, an improved superconvergence analysis is presented for both the Crouzeix-Raviart element and the Morley element. The main idea of the analysis is to employ a discrete Helmholtz decomposition of the difference between the canonical interpolation and the finite element solution for the first order mixed Raviart--Thomas element and the mixed Hellan--Herrmann--Johnson element, respectively. This, in particular, allows for proving a full one order superconvergence result for these two mixed finite elements. Finally, a full one order superconvergence result of both the Crouzeix-Raviar…
In this paper, we prove that Crouzeix-Raviart finite elements of polynomial order $p\geq5$, $p$ odd, are inf-sup stable for the Stokes problem on triangulations. For $p\geq4$, $p$ even, the stability was proved by Á. Baran and G. Stoyan in 2007 by using the \textit{macroelement technique,} a \textit{dimension formula}, the concept of \textit{critical points} in a triangulation and a representation of the corresponding \textit{critical functions}. Baran and Stoyan proved that these critical functions belong to the range of the divergence operator applied to Crouzeix-Raviart velocity functions a…
In this paper, we consider the discretization of the two-dimensional stationary Stokes equation by Crouzeix-Raviart elements for the velocity of polynomial order $k\geq1$ on conforming triangulations and discontinuous pressure approximations of order $k-1$. We will bound the inf-sup constant from below independent of the mesh size and show that it depends only logarithmically on $k$. Our assumptions on the mesh are very mild: for odd $k$ we require that the triangulations contain at least one inner vertex while for even $k$ we assume that the triangulations consist of more than a single triang…
In this paper, we extend the work of Brenner and Sung [Math. Comp. 59, 321--338 (1992)] and present a regularity estimate for the elastic equations in concave domains. Based on the regularity estimate we prove that the constants in the error estimates of the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element approximations for the elastic equations/eigenvalue problem are independent of the Lame constant, which means the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element approximations are locking-free. We also establish two kinds of two-grid discretization schemes for the elastic eigenvalue problem and analyze that w…
We show that, using the Crouzeix-Raviart scheme, a cheap algebraic transformation, applied to the coupled velocity-pressure linear systems issued from the transient or steady Stokes or Navier-Stokes problems, leads to a linear system only involving as many auxiliary variables as the velocity components. This linear system, which is symmetric positive definite in the case of the transient Stokes problem and symmetric invertible in the case of the steady Stokes problem, with the same stencil as that of the velocity matrix, provides the exact solution of the initial coupled linear system. Numeric…
The resolution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is tricky, and it is well known that one of the major issue is to compute a divergence free velocity. The non-conforming Crouzeix-Raviart finite element are convenient since they induce local mass conservation. Moreover they are such that the stability constant of the Fortin operator is equal to 1. This implies that they can easily handle anisotropic mesh [1, 2]. However spurious velocities may appear and damage the approximation. We propose a scheme here that allows to reduce the spurious velocities. It is based on a new discretisat…

This article on nonconforming schemes for $m$ harmonic problems simultaneously treats the Crouzeix-Raviart ($m=1$) and the Morley finite elements ($m=2$) for the original and for modified right-hand side $F$ in the dual space $V^*:=H^{-m}(Ω)$ to the energy space $V:=H^{m}_0(Ω)$. The smoother $J:V_{\rm nc} \to V$ in this paper is a companion operator, that is a linear and bounded right-inverse to the nonconforming interpolation operator $I_{\rm nc} :V\to V_{\rm nc}$, and modifies the discrete right-hand side $F_h:=F\circ J \in V_{\rm nc}^*$. The best-approximation property of the modified schem…

We present a stable discretization of sea-ice dynamics on triangular grids that can straightforwardly be coupled to an ocean model on a triangular grid with Arakawa C-type staggering. The approach is based on a nonconforming finite element framework, namely the Crouzeix-Raviart finite element. As the discretization of the viscous-plastic and elastic-viscous-plastic stress tensor with the Crouzeix-Raviart finite element produces oscillations in the velocity field, we introduce an edge-based stabilization. To show that the stabilized Crouzeix-Raviart approximation is qualitative consistent with …
This paper is devoted to the construction and analysis of immersed finite element (IFE) methods in three dimensions. Different from the 2D case, the points of intersection of the interface and the edges of a tetrahedron are usually not coplanar, which makes the extension of the original 2D IFE methods based on a piecewise linear approximation of the interface to the 3D case not straightforward. We address this coplanarity issue by an approach where the interface is approximated via discrete level set functions. This approach is very convenient from a computational point of view since in many p…
We present precise Raviart-Thomas interpolation error estimates on anisotropic meshes. The novel aspect of our theory is the introduction of a new geometric parameter of simplices. It is possible to obtain new anisotropic Raviart-Thoma error estimates using the parameter. We also include corrections to an error in "General theory of interpolation error estimates on anisotropic meshes" (Japan Journal of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, 38 (2021) 163-191), in which Theorem 3 was incorrect.
The hybrid Raviart-Thomas mixed discontinuous Galerkin (HRTMDG) method is proposed for solving the Helmholtz equation. With a new energy norm, we establish the existence and uniqueness of the HRTMDG method, and give its convergence analysis. The corresponding error estimate shows that the HRTMDG method has an optimal $L^2$-norm convergence accuracy which is independent of wavenumber.
