We investigate interactions between the proton spin, the deuteron spin, and the orbital angular momentum in the electronic ground state of the HD molecule. These interactions lead to hyperfine splittings of molecular energy levels. Our numerical results for the first rotational level agree well with the currently most accurate measurement performed by Ramsey {\em et al.} in the 1950s. Knowledge of the hyperfine structure of other levels is necessary for the accurate determination of rovibrational transition energies in spectroscopic measurements. We present theoretical predictions and share the numerical code used to perform numerical calculations. This work sets the ground for high precision spectroscopic tests of hyperfine interactions in molecular systems. In particular we determine the value of the deuteron quadrupole moment $Q = 0.2856(2)$ fm$^2$ and give outlook for improving its accuracy by three orders of magnitude.
We report results of a theoretical investigation of hyperfine interactions in two homonuclear isotopologues of the hydrogen molecule: H$_{2}$ and D$_{2}$. We present a set of hyperfine coupling constants: spin-rotation, spin-spin dipole and, in the case of the D$_{2}$ molecule, electric quadrupole coupling constants for all bound states of the two isotopologues in their ground electronic $X^{1}Σ^{+}_{g}$ state. We provide a list of positions and intensities of 220 997 hyperfine components of 16 079 rovibrational quadrupole transitions of the O, Q and S branches. The positions and intensities o…
We investigate the energy levels of heteronuclear alkali metal dimers in levels correlating with the lowest rotational level of the ground electronic state, which are important in efforts to produce ground-state ultracold molecules. We use density-functional theory to calculate nuclear quadrupole and magnetic coupling constants for RbK and RbCs and explore the hyperfine structure in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. For nonrotating states, the zero-field splittings are dominated by the electron-mediated part of the nuclear spin-spin coupling. They are a few kHz for RbK isotopologs …
We investigate the hyperfine energy levels and Zeeman splittings for homonuclear alkali-metal dimers in low-lying rotational and vibrational states, which are important for experiments designed to produce quantum gases of deeply bound molecules. We carry out density-functional theory (DFT) calculations of the nuclear hyperfine coupling constants. For nonrotating states, the zero-field splittings are determined almost entirely by the scalar nuclear spin-spin coupling constant. By contrast with the heteronuclear case, the total nuclear spin remains a good quantum number in a magnetic field. We a…
We calculate the microwave spectra of ultracold KRb alkali metal dimers, including hyperfine interactions and in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. We show that microwave transitions may be used to transfer molecules between different hyperfine states, but only because of the presence of nuclear quadrupole interactions. Hyperfine splittings may also complicate the use of ultracold molecules for quantum computing. The spectrum of molecules oriented in electric fields may be simplified dramatically by applying a simultaneous magnetic field.
The Z-vector method in the relativistic coupled-cluster framework is employed to calculate the parallel and perpendicular components of the magnetic hyperfine structure constant of a few small alkaline earth hydrides (BeH, MgH, and CaH) and fluorides (MgF and CaF). We have compared our Z-vector results with the values calculated by the extended coupled-cluster (ECC) method reported in Phys. Rev. A 91 022512 (2015). All these results are compared with the available experimental values. The Z-vector results are found to be in better agreement with the experimental values than those of the ECC va…
Recently the first laser spectroscopy measurement of the radioactive RaF molecule has been reported by Ruiz \textit{et al.} [Nature \textbf{581}, 396 (2020)]. This and similar molecules are considered to search for the New Physics effects. The radium nucleus is of interest as it is octupole-deformed and has close levels of opposite parity. The preparation of such experiments can be simplified if there are reliable theoretical predictions. It is shown that the accurate prediction of the hyperfine structure of the RaF molecule requires to take into account the finite magnetization distribution i…
We report an experimental investigation on the Doppler-free saturated absorption spectroscopy of buffer-gas-cooled Barium monofluoride (BaF) molecules in a 4~K cryogenic cell. The obtained spectra with a resolution of 19~MHz, much smaller than previously observed in absorption spectroscopy, clearly resolve the hyperfine transitions. Moreover, we use these high-resolution spectra to fit the hyperfine splittings of excited $A(v=0)$ state and find the hyperfine splitting of the laser-cooling-relevant $A^2Π_{1/2}(v=0, J=1/2, +)$ state is about 18 MHz, much higher than the previous theoretically pr…
An algorithm for the calculation of hyperfine structure and spectra of diatomic molecules based on the variational nuclear motion is presented. Hyperfine coupling terms considered are Fermi-contact, nuclear spin-electron spin dipole-dipole, nuclear spin-orbit, nuclear spin-rotation and nuclear electric quadrupole interactions. Initial hyperfine-unresolved wavefunctions are obtained for given set of potential energy curves and associated couplings by variation solution of the nuclear-motion Schrödinger equation. Fully hyperfine-resolved parity-conserved rovibronic Hamiltonian matrices for a giv…
We investigate the microwave spectra of ultracold alkali metal dimers in magnetic, electric and combined fields, taking account of the hyperfine structure due to the nuclear spins. We consider the molecules 41K87Rb and 7Li133Cs, which are the targets of current experiments and demonstrate two extremes of large and small nuclear quadrupole coupling. We calculate the frequencies and intensities of transitions that may be used to transfer ultracold molecules between hyperfine states in a magnetic field, employing different polarizations of microwave radiation. In an electric field, the hyperfine …
This article deals with the general implementation of 4-component spinor relativistic extended coupled cluster (ECC) method to calculate first order property of atoms and molecules in their open-shell ground state configuration. The implemented relativistic ECC is employed to calculate hyperfine structure (HFS) constant of alkali metals (Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs), singly charged alkaline earth metal atoms (Be+, Mg+, Ca+ and Sr+) and molecules (BeH, MgF and CaH). We have compared our ECC results with the calculations based on restricted active space configuration interaction (RAS-CI) method. Our re…
We demonstrate coherent microwave control of rotational and hyperfine states of trapped, ultracold, and chemically stable $^{23}$Na$^{40}$K molecules. Starting with all molecules in the absolute rovibrational and hyperfine ground state, we study rotational transitions in combined magnetic and electric fields and explain the rich hyperfine structure. Following the transfer of the entire molecular ensemble into a single hyperfine level of the first rotationally excited state, $J{=}1$, we observe collisional lifetimes of more than $3\, \rm s$, comparable to those in the rovibrational ground state…
A moderately intense $450$ fs laser pulse is used to create rotational wave packets in gas phase $\rm{I_2}$ molecules. The ensuing time-dependent alignment, measured by Coulomb explosion imaging with a delayed probe pulse, exhibits the characteristic revival structures expected for rotational wave packets but also a complex non-periodic substructure and decreasing mean alignment not observed before. A quantum mechanical model attributes the phenomena to coupling between the rotational angular momenta and the nuclear spins through the electric quadrupole interaction. The calculated alignment tr…
A theoretical model of hyperfine spectra of nuclear spin conversion of molecular isomers has been developed. The model takes into account the nuclear spin-spin and spin-rotation interactions, as well as the saturation of intramolecular mixing of molecular ortho and para states. The model has been applied to hyperfine spectra of nuclear spin conversion in ^{13}CH3F molecules subjected to an external electric field. Conditions under which the hyperfine structure in the spectra can be resolved have been determined.
We have performed high resolution photoassociation spectroscopy of rubidium ultra long-range Rydberg molecules in the vicinity of the 25$P$ state. Due to the hyperfine interaction in the ground state perturber atom, the emerging mixed singlet-triplet potentials contain contributions from both hyperfine states. We show that this can be used to induce remote spin-flips in the perturber atom upon excitation of a Rydberg molecule. When furthermore the spin-orbit splitting of the Rydberg state is comparable to the hyperfine splitting in the ground state, the orbital angular momentum of the Rydberg …
We perform the four-body calculation of the hyperfine structure in the first rotational state $J=1$ of the H$_2$, D$_2$, and HD molecules and determine the accurate value for the deuteron electric quadrupole moment $Q_d = 0.285\,699(15)(18)$ fm$^2$ in significant disagreement with former spectroscopic determinations. Our results for the hyperfine parameters agree very well with the currently most accurate molecular-beam magnetic resonance measurement performed several decades ago by N.F. Ramsey and coworkers. They also indicate the significance of previously neglected nonadiabatic effects. Mor…
Some experimental evidences for methane are produced that the simple transition from frequency scanning of nonlinear-optical resonances to magnetic one may be accompanied with transition from sub-Doppler collisionally broadened structure to sub-collision hyperfine one. It is conditioned by nonlinearity of splitting of hyperfine sublevel for molecules in the adiabatically varied magnetic field and respectively breaking the analogy of magnetic and frequency scannings. The exact calculation of the resonance structure is considered for molecules with only one spin subsystem. The approximately spin…

Nuclear spin levels play an important role in understanding magnetization dynamics and implementation and control of quantum bits in lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets. We investigate the hyperfine and nuclear quadrupole interactions for $^{161}$Dy and $^{163}$Dy nucleus in anionic DyPc$_2$ (Pc=phthalocyanine) single-molecule magnets, using multiconfigurational ab-initio methods (beyond density-functional theory) including spin-orbit interaction. The two isotopes of Dy are chosen because the others have zero nuclear spin. Both isotopes have the nuclear spin $I=5/2$, although the magnitud…
Lanthanide-based single-ion magnetic molecules can have large magnetic hyperfine interactions as well as large magnetic anisotropy. Recent experimental studies reported tunability of these properties by changes of chemical environments or by application of external stimuli for device applications. In order to provide insight onto the origin and mechanism of such tunability, here we investigate the magnetic hyperfine and nuclear quadrupole interactions for $^{159}$Tb nucleus in TbPc$_2$ (Pc=phthalocyanine) single-molecule magnets using multireference ab-initio methods including spin-orbit inter…
A general algorithm for computing the quadrupole-hyperfine effects in the rovibrational spectra of polyatomic molecules is presented for the case of ammonia (NH$_3$). The method extends the general variational approach TROVE by adding the extra term in the Hamiltonian that describes the nuclear quadrupole coupling, with no inherent limitation on the number of quadrupolar nuclei in a molecule. We applied the new approach to compute the nitrogen-nuclear-quadrupole hyperfine structure in the rovibrational spectrum of NH$_3$. These results agree very well with recent experimental spectroscopic dat…
We present a general variational approach for computing the laser-induced rovibrational dynamics of molecules taking into account the hyperfine effects of the nuclear quadrupole coupling. The method combines the general variational approach TROVE, which provides accurate rovibrational hyperfine energies and wave functions for arbitrary molecules, with the variational method RichMol, designed for generalized simulations of the rovibrational dynamics in the presence of external electric fields. We investigate the effect of the nuclear quadrupole coupling on the short-pulse laser alignment of a p…
The odd isotopologues of ytterbium monohydroxide, $^{171,173}$YbOH, have been identified as promising molecules in which to measure parity (P) and time reversal (T) violating physics. Here we characterize the $\tilde{A}^{2}Π_{1/2}(0,0,0)-\tilde{X}^2Σ^+(0,0,0)$ band near 577 nm for these odd isotopologues. Both laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) excitation spectra of a supersonic molecular beam sample and absorption spectra of a cryogenic buffer-gas cooled sample were recorded. Additionally, a novel spectroscopic technique based on laser-enhanced chemical reactions is demonstrated and utilized in…
SH$^+$ is a surprisingly widespread molecular ion in diffuse interstellar clouds. There, it plays an important role triggering the sulfur chemistry. In addition, SH$^+$ emission lines have been detected at the UV-illuminated edges of dense molecular clouds, \mbox{so-called} photo-dissociation regions (PDRs), and toward high-mass protostars. An accurate determination of the SH$^+$ abundance and of the physical conditions prevailing in these energetic environments relies on knowing the rate coefficients of inelastic collisions between SH$^+$ molecules and hydrogen atoms, hydrogen molecules, and …
Characterising molecules for fundamental physics: an accurate spectroscopic model of methyltrioxorhenium derived from new infrared and millimetre-wave measurements
Magnetic Feshbach resonances play a central role in experimental research of atomic gases at ultracold temperatures, as they allow one to control the microscopic interactions between ultracold atoms by tuning an applied magnetic field. These resonances arise due to strong hyperfine interactions between the unpaired electron and the nuclear magnetic moment of the alkali metal atoms. A major thrust of current research is to create an ultracold gas of diatomic alkali-metal molecules in the ground rovibrational state of the ground electronic $^1Σ$ state. Unlike alkali metal atoms, $^1Σ$ diatomic m…
Ab initio calculation of the hyperfine, P-odd, and P,T-odd constants for the YbF molecule was performed with the help of the recently developed technique, which allows to take into account correlations and polarization in the outercore region. The ground state electronic wave function of the YbF molecule is found with the help of the Relativistic Effective Core Potential method followed by the restoration of molecular four-component spinors in the core region of ytterbium in the framework of a non-variational procedure. Core polarization effects are included with the help of the atomic Many Bo…
Molecular spin qubits with long spin coherence time as well as non-invasive operation methods on such qubits are in high demand. It was shown that both molecular electronic and nuclear spin levels can be used as qubits. In solid state systems with dopants, an electric field was shown to effectively change the spacing between the nuclear spin qubit levels when the electron spin density is high at the nucleus of the dopant. Inspired by such solid-state systems, we propose that divalent lanthanide (Ln) complexes with an unusual electronic configuration of Ln$^{2+}$ have a strong interaction betwe…
We develop a model for predicting fine- and hyperfine intensities in the direct photoionization of molecules based on the separability of electron and nuclear spin states from vibrational-electronic states. Using spherical tensor algebra, we derive highly symmetrized forms of the squared photoionization dipole matrix elements from which which we derive the salient selection and propensity rules for fine- and hyperfine resolved photoionizing transitions. Our theoretical results are validated by the analysis of the fine-structure resolved photoelectron spectrum of O$_2$ (reported by H. Palm and …
We report on the creation of an ultracold dipolar gas of fermionic $^{23}$Na$^{40}$K molecules in their absolute rovibrational and hyperfine ground state. Starting from weakly bound Feshbach molecules, we demonstrate hyperfine resolved two-photon transfer into the singlet ${\rm X}^1Σ^+ |v{=}0,J{=}0\rangle$ ground state, coherently bridging a binding energy difference of 0.65 eV via stimulated rapid adiabatic passage. The spin-polarized, nearly quantum degenerate molecular gas displays a lifetime longer than 2.5 s, highlighting NaK's stability against two-body chemical reactions. A homogeneous …
Resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) is a widely used technique for studying molecular photoionization and producing molecular cations for spectroscopy and dynamics studies. Here, we present a model for describing hyperfine-structure effects in the REMPI process and for predicting hyperfine populations in molecular ions produced by this method. This model is a generalization of our model for fine- and hyperfine- structure effects in one-photon ionization of molecules presented in the preceding companion article. This generalization is achieved by covering two main aspects: (1) tre…
The four-component relativistic Fock space coupled cluster method is used to describe the magnetic hyperfine interaction in low-lying electronic states of the KCs molecule. Both diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements as functions of the internuclear separation $R$ are calculated within the finite-field scheme. The resulting matrix elements exhibit very weak dependence on $R$ for the separations exceeding 8 Å, whereas in the vicinity of the ground-state equilibrium the deviation of molecular HFS matrix elements from the atomic values reaches 15\%. The dependence of the computed HFS couplings…
Sub-Doppler, saturation dip, spectra of lines in the $v_1 + v_3$, $v_1 + 2v_4$ and $v_3 + 2v_4$ bands of $^{14}$NH$_3$ have been measured by frequency comb-referenced diode laser absorption spectroscopy. The observed spectral line widths are dominated by transit time broadening, but show resolved or partially-resolved hyperfine splittings that are primarily determined by the $^{14}$N quadrupole coupling. Modeling of the observed line shapes based on the known hyperfine level structure of the ground state of the molecule shows that, in nearly all cases, the excited state level has hyperfine spl…
We present an extension of our one-body Møller-Plesset second-order perturbation (OBMP2) method for open-shell systems. We derived the OBMP2 Hamiltonian through the canonical transformation followed by the cumulant approximation to reduce many-body operators into one-body ones. The resulting Hamiltonian consists of an uncorrelated Fock (unperturbed Hamiltonian) and a one-body correlation potential (perturbed Hamiltonian) composed of only double excitations. Molecular orbitals and associated energy levels are then relaxed via self-consistency, similar to Hartree-Fock, in the presence of the cor…
Two-color photoassociation of ground state $^6$Li$^{87}$Rb molecules via the $\mathrm{B}^1Π$ electronic state using short pulses near a magnetic Feshbach resonance is studied theoretically. A near-resonant magnetic field is applied to mix the hyperfine singlet and triplet components of the initial wave function and enhance the photoassociation rate, before the population is transferred to the ground state by a second pulse. We show that an increase of up to three orders of magnitude in the absolute number of molecules produced is attainable for deeply bound vibrational levels. This technique c…
The molecular dipole moment and magnetic hyperfine structure constant demand an accurate wavefunction far from the nucleus and in near nuclear region, respectively. We, therefore, employ the so-called Z-vector method in the domain of relativistic coupled cluster theory to calculate the first order property of molecular systems in their open-shell ground state configuration. The implemented method is applied to calculate molecular dipole moment and parallel component of the magnetic hyperfine structure constant of SrF molecule. The results of our calculation are compared with the experimental a…
Very accurate transition frequencies of HC$_5$N were determined between 5.3 and 21.4 GHz with a Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The molecules were generated by passing a mixture of HC$_3$N and C$_2$H$_2$ highly diluted in neon through a discharge valve followed by supersonic expansion into the Fabry-Perot cavity of the spectrometer. The accuracies of the data permitted us to improve the experimental $^{14}$N nuclear quadrupole coupling parameter considerably and the first experimental determination of the $^{14}$N nuclear spin-rotation parameter. The transition frequencies are also w…
Rotational transitions of $iso$-propyl cyanide, (CH$_3$)$_2$CHCN, also known as $iso$-butyronitrile, were recorded using long-path absorption spectroscopy in selected regions between 37 and 600 GHz. Further measurements were carried out between 6 and 20 GHz employing Fourier transform microwave (FTMW) spectroscopy on a pulsed molecular supersonic jet. The observed transitions reach $J$ and $K_a$ quantum numbers of 103 and 59, respectively, and yield accurate rotational constants as well as distortion parameters up to eighth order. The $^{14}$N nuclear hyperfine splitting was resolved in partic…
