Molecular emission lines are essential tools to shed lights on many questions regarding star formation in galaxies. Multiple molecular lines are particularly useful to probe different phases of star-forming molecular clouds. In this study, we investigate the physical properties of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) using multiple lines of CO, i.e. CO(1-0, 2-1, 3-2) and $^{13}$CO(1-0), obtained at selected 20 positions in the disc of NGC 0628. Eleven positions were selected over the radial cut, including the centre, and remaining nine positions were selected across the southern and northern arms of the galaxy. 13 out of 20 positions are brighter at 24micron and ultraviolet (UV) emission and hosting significantly more HII regions compared to the rest of the positions indicating opposite characteristics. Our line ratio analysis shows that the gas gets warmer and thinner as a function of radius from the galaxy centre up to 1.7 kpc, and then the ratios start to fluctuate. Our empirical and model results suggest that the UV-bright positions have colder and thinner CO gas with higher hydrogen and CO column densities. However, the UV-dim positions have relatively warmer CO gas with lower densities bathed in GMCs surrounded by less number of HII regions. Analysis of multi-wavelength infrared and UV data indicates that the UV-bright positions have higher star formation efficiency than that of the UV-dim positions.
Type 1 active galactic nuclei display broad emission lines, regarded as arising from photoionized gas moving in the gravitational potential of a supermassive black hole. The origin of this broad-line region gas is unresolved so far, however. Another component is the dusty torus beyond the broad-line region, likely an assembly of discrete clumps that can hide the region from some viewing angles and make them observationally appear as Type 2 objects. Here we report that these clumps moving within the dust sublimation radius, like the molecular cloud G2 discovered in the Galactic center, will be …
Spitzer Space Telescope InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) images of M100 show numerous long filaments with regularly-spaced clumps, suggesting the associated cloud complexes formed by large-scale gravitational instabilities in shocked and accumulated gas. Optical images give no hint of this underlying regularity. The typical spacing between near infrared (NIR) clumps is ~410 pc, which is ~3 times the clump diameter, consistent with the fastest growing mode in a filament of critical line density. The IRAC magnitudes and colors of several hundred clumps are measured in the most obvious 27 filaments a…
We consider a dusty clump in the two cases of spherical and cylindrical symmetry to investigate the effect of temperature and density gradients on the observed flux density. Conversely, we evaluate how the presence of such gradients affects the calculation of the clump mass from the observed flux. We provide the reader with approximate expressions relating flux density and mass in the optically thick and thin limits, in the Rayleigh-Jeans regime, and discuss the reliability of these expressions by comparing them to the outcome of a numerical code. Finally, we present an application of our calc…
We present a study of molecular structures (clumps and clouds) in the dwarf galaxy NGC 404 using high-resolution (0.86x0.51 pc^2) Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array ^{12}CO(2-1) observations. We find two distinct regions in NGC 404: a gravitationally-stable central region (Toomre parameter Q=3-30) and a gravitationally-unstable molecular ring (Q<=1). The molecular structures in the central region have a steeper size -- linewidth relation and larger virial parameters than those in the molecular ring, suggesting gas is more turbulent in the former. In the molecular ring, clumps exhibi…
The envelope of the red supergiant VY CMa has long been considered an extreme example of episodic mass loss that is possibly taking place in other cool and massive evolved stars. Recent submm observations of the envelope revealed massive dusty clumps within 800 mas from the star which reinforce the picture of drastic mass-loss phenomena in VY CMa. We present new ALMA observations at an angular resolution of 0.1" and at an unprecedented sensitivity that reveal further details about the dusty clumps. We resolve more discrete features and identify a submm counterpart of a more distant Clump SW kn…
We investigated the emission of active galactic nuclei dusty tori in the infrared domain, with a focus on the 10 micron silicate feature. We modeled the dusty torus as a clumpy two-phase medium with high-density clumps and a low-density medium filling the space between the clumps. We employed a three-dimensional radiative transfer code to obtain spectral energy distributions and images of tori at different wavelengths. We calculated a grid of models for different parameters and analyzed the influence of these parameters on the shape of the mid-infrared emission. A corresponding set of clumps-o…
Narrow-band HST imaging has resolved the detailed internal structure of the 10 kpc diameter H alpha+[NII] emission line nebulosity in NGC4696, the central galaxy in the nearby Centaurus cluster, showing that the dusty, molecular, filaments have a width of about 60pc. Optical morphology and velocity measurements indicate that the filaments are dragged out by the bubbling action of the radio source as part of the AGN feedback cycle. Using the drag force we find that the magnetic field in the filaments is in approximate pressure equipartition with the hot gas. The filamentary nature of the cold g…
Massive galaxy-scale outflows of gas are one of the most commonly-invoked mechanisms to regulate the growth and evolution of galaxies throughout the universe. While the gas in outflows spans a large range of temperatures and densities, the cold molecular phase is of particular interest because molecular outflows may be capable of suppressing star formation in galaxies by removing the star-forming gas. We have conducted the first survey of molecular outflows at z > 4, targeting 11 strongly-lensed dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) with high-resolution Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) obs…
The detection of dusty winds dominating the infrared emission of AGN on parsec scales has revealed the limitations of traditional radiative transfer models based on a toroidal distribution of dusty gas. A new, more complex, dynamical structure is emerging and the physical origin of such dusty winds has to be critically assessed. We present a semi-analytical model to test the hypothesis of radiatively accelerated dusty winds launched by the AGN and by the heated dust itself. The model consists of an AGN and an infrared radiating dusty disk, the latter being the primary mass reservoir for the ou…
We report on high-sensitivity and high-angular resolution archival Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of the large ($\sim$15000 AU) putative circumstellar disk associated with the O-type protostar NGC 7538 S. Observations of the continuum resolve this putative circumstellar disk into five compact sources, with sizes $\sim$ 3000 AU and masses $\sim10 M_\odot$. This confirm the results of recent millimeter observations made with CARMA/BIMA towards this object. However, we find that from most of these compact sources eject collimated bipolar outflows, revealed by our silicon monoxide (SiO {\i…
By analyzing the Chandra archival data of the nearby NGC 6338 galaxy group, we identify two X-ray bright clumps (N-clump and S-clump) within the central 100 kpc, and detect an arc-like X-ray brightness discontinuity at the south boundary of the N-clump, which is defined as a cold front with a gas flow Mach number of M<0.8. Furthermore, at the north-east boundary of the S-clump (dominated by galaxy NGC 6338) another X-ray edge is detected that corresponds to a weaker cold front. Therefore, the two clumps are approaching each other approximately from opposite directions, and the group is undergo…
We used the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph Integral Field Unit to map the gas distribution, excitation and kinematics within the inner kiloparsec of four nearby low-luminosity active galaxies: NGC3982, NGC4501, NGC2787 and NGC4450. The observations cover the spectral range 5600-7000Å at a velocity resolution of 120km/s and spatial resolution ranging from 50 to 70pc at the galaxies. Extended emission in Hα, [NII]λλ6548,6583, [SII]λλ6716,6730 over most of the field-of-view is observed for all galaxies, while only NGC3982 shows [OI]λ6300 extended emission. The Hα equivalent widths combined with…
NGC 6441 is one of the most massive and most metal-rich globular clusters in the galaxy, and is noted for an unusual extended horizontal branch which reaches past the instability strip. We find evidence that there are two different populations of stars within the heavily-populated red clump. Once a differential reddening correction is applied, a large but compact group of stars is found at the faint red end of the clump in the color magnitude diagram. Brighter, bluer stars in the clump are found to be more centrally concentrated within the cluster at very high level of significance. Curiously,…
We report the discovery of a molecular wind signature from a massive intensely star-forming clump of a few $10^9$ Msun, in the strongly gravitationally lensed submillimeter galaxy "the Emerald" (PLCK_G165.7+49.0) at z=2.236. The Emerald is amongst the brightest high-redshift galaxies on the submillimeter sky, and was initially discovered with the Planck satellite. The system contains two magnificient structures with projected lengths of 28.5" and 21" formed by multiple, near-infrared arcs, falling behind a massive galaxy cluster at z=0.35, as well as an adjacent filament that has so far escape…
We present spatially resolved ALMA [CII] observations of the bright (flux density S=400 mJy at 350 microns), gravitationally lensed, starburst galaxy PLCK G045.1+61.1 at z=3.427, the "Garnet". This source is part of our set of "Planck's Dusty GEMS", discovered with the Planck's all-sky survey. Two emission-line clouds with a relative velocity offset of ~600 km/s extend towards north-east and south-west, respectively, of a small, intensely star-forming clump with a star-formation intensity of 220 Msun/yr/kpc^2, akin to maximal starbursts. [CII] is also seen in absorption, with a redshift of +35…
We present an 8 pc x 5 pc resolution view of the central ~ 200 pc region of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253, based on ALMA Band 7 (λ ~ 0.85 mm or ν ~ 350 GHz) observations covering 11 GHz. We resolve the nuclear starburst of NGC 253 into eight dusty star-forming clumps, 10 pc in scale, for the first time. These clumps, each of which contains (4-10) x 10^4 M_sun of dust (assuming that the dust temperature is 25 K) and up to 6 x 10^2 massive (O5V) stars, appear to be aligned in two parallel ridges, while they have been blended in previous studies. Despite the similarities in sizes and dust m…
The nearby ($\sim$500 kpc) metal-poor ([Fe/H] $\approx$ -1.2; $Z$ $\approx$ 30% $Z_{\odot}$) star-forming galaxy NGC 6822 has a metallicity similar to systems at the epoch of peak star formation. Through identification and study of dusty and dust-producing stars, it is therefore a useful laboratory to shed light on the dust life cycle in the early Universe. We present a catalog of sources combining near- and mid-IR photometry from the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT; $J$, $H$, and $K$) and the $Spitzer$ $Space$ $Telescope$ (IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 $μ$m and MIPS 24 $μ$m). This cata…
We have carried out a survey of the NGC 2068 region in the Orion B molecular cloud using HARP on the JCMT, in the 13CO and C18O (J = 3-2) and H13CO+ (J = 4-3) lines. We used 13CO to map the outflows in the region, and matched them with previously defined SCUBA cores. We decomposed the C18O and H13CO+ into Gaussian clumps, finding 26 and 8 clumps respectively. The average deconvolved radii of these clumps is 6200 +/- 2000 AU and 3600 +/- 900 AU for C18O and H13CO+ respectively. We have also calculated virial and gas masses for these clumps, and hence determined how bound they are. We find that …
We report our optical spectroscopic study of the nucleus and its surrounding region of a nearby luminous infrared galaxy NGC 4418. This galaxy has been known to host a compact obscured nucleus, showing distinct characteristics such as a very compact ($\sim 20$ pc) sub-mm and mid-infrared core and dusty circumnuclear region with massive molecular gas concentration. We detected dusty superwind outflow at $\gtrsim 1$ kpc scale along the disk semiminor axis in both shock-heated emission lines and enhanced interstellar Na D absorption. This superwind shows basic characteristics similar to those of …
We present observations of the 85.69 GHz continuum emission and H42alpha line emission from the central 30 arcsec within NGC 4945. Both sources of emission originate from nearly identical structures that can be modelled as exponential discs with a scale length of ~2.1 arcsec (or ~40 pc). An analysis of the spectral energy distribution based on combining these data with archival data imply that 84% +/- 10% of the 85.69 GHz continuum emission originates from free-free emission. The electron temperature is 5400 +/- 600 K, which is comparable to what has been measured near the centre of the Milky …
From an observational point of view, the role of magnetic fields in star formation remains unclear, and two main theoretical scenarios have been proposed so far to regulate the star-formation processes. The first model assumes that turbulence in star-forming clumps plays a crucial role, and especially that protostellar outflow-driven turbulence is crucial to support cluster-forming clumps; while the second scenario is based on the consideration of a magnetically-supported clump. Previous studies of the NGC 2264-C protocluster indicate that, in addition to thermal pressure, some extra support m…
NGC 4921 and 7049 are two spiral galaxies presenting narrow, distinct dust features. A detailed study of the morphology of those features has been carried out using Hubble Space Telescope archival images. NGC 4921 shows a few but well-defined dust arms midway to its centre while NGC 7049 displays many more dusty features, mainly collected within a ring-shaped formation. Numerous dark and filamentary structures, called outgrowths, are found to protrude from the dusty arms in both galaxies. The outgrowths point both outwards and inwards in the galaxies. Mostly they are found to be V-shaped or Y-…
A galaxy-galaxy merger and the subsequent triggering of starburst activity are fundamental processes linked to the morphological transformation of galaxies and the evolution of star formation across the history of the Universe. Both nuclear and disk-wide starbursts are assumed to occur during the merger process. However, quantifying both nuclear and disk-wide star formation activity is non-trivial because the nuclear starburst is dusty in the most active merging starburst galaxies. This paper presents a new approach to this problem: combining hydrogen recombination lines in optical, millimeter…
We map the dust distribution in the central 180" (~680 pc) region of the M31 bulge, based on HST/WFC3 and ACS observations in ten bands from near-ultraviolet (2700 A) to near-infrared (1.5 micron). This large wavelength coverage gives us great leverage to detect not only dense dusty clumps, but also diffuse dusty molecular gas. We fit a pixel-by-pixel spectral energy distributions to construct a high-dynamic-range extinction map with unparalleled angular resolution (~0.5" , i.e., ~2 pc) and sensitivity (the extinction uncertainty, δA_V~0.05). In particular, the data allow to directly fit the f…
An intriguing silhouette of a small dust patch can be seen against the disk of the S0 galaxy NGC 3269 in the Antlia cluster in optical images. The images do not provide any clue as to whether the patch is a local Jupiter mass-scale cloudlet or a large extragalactic dust complex. We aim to resolve the nature of this object: is it a small Galactic cloudlet or an extragalactic dust complex? ALMA and APEX spectroscopy and Gemini GMOS long-slit spectroscopy were used to measure the velocity of the patch and the NGC 3269 disk radial velocity curve. A weak 16$\pm$2.5 km/s wide $^{12}$CO (2-1) T$_{MB}…
A few star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds exhibit composite structures in the red-clump region of their colour-magnitude diagrams. The most striking case is NGC419 in the SMC, where the red clump is composed of a main blob as well as a distinct secondary feature. This structure is demonstrated to be real and corresponds to the simultaneous presence of stars which passed through electron degeneracy after central-hydrogen exhaustion and those that did not. This rare occurrence in a single cluster allows us to set stringent constraints on its age and on the efficiency of convective-core oversh…
We surveyed the (1,1), (2,2), and (3,3) lines of NH3 and the H2O maser toward the molecular cloud L935 in the extended HII region NGC 7000 with an angular resolution of 1.6' using the Kashima 34-m telescope. We found five clumps in the NH3 emission with a size of 0.2--1 pc and mass of 9--452 M_sun. The molecular gas in these clumps has a similar gas kinetic temperature of 11--15 K and a line width of 1--2 km/s. However, they have different star formation activities such as the concentration of T-Tauri type stars and the association of H2O maser sources. We found that these star formation activ…
Star formation in galaxies is a hierarchical process with a wide range of scales from smaller clusters to larger stellar complexes. Here, we present an ultra-violet imaging study of the nearby flocculent spiral galaxy NGC 7793, observed with the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). We find that the disk scale-length estimated in Far-UV (2.64$\pm$0.16 kpc) is larger than that in Near-UV (2.21$\pm$0.21 kpc) and optical (1.08 kpc), which supports the inside-out growth scenario of the galaxy disk. The star-forming UV disk is also found to be contained within the extent of H~I gas of column densi…
We make use of the absence of Lense-Thirring precession of the innermost megamaser clumps around black holes in order to place upper limits on the spin amplitude of seven black holes at the center of megamaser galaxies: NGC 4258, NGC 2273, UGC 3789, NGC 3393, NGC 5495, NGC 5765b, and UGC 6093. The constraints are derived by requiring that the associated precession time-scale be longer than the age of the megamaser clumps, in order to preserve the single-plane geometry of the megamasers.
We model the near infrared SED of NGC 4151 with a 3-D radiative transfer SKIRT code, using which torus only (TO) and Ring And Torus (RAT) scenarios are studied. In the RAT models, a graphite ring-like structure (clumpy or smooth), is incorporated between the torus and the accretion disk. We vary the inclination angle $(i)$, inner radius (of the torus and the ring, $R_{\rm in, t}$ and $R_{\rm in, r}$ respectively), torus half-opening angle ($σ$), optical depth ($τ_{9.7, \rm t} $ of the torus and $τ_{9.7, \rm r} $ of the ring ) and the dust clump size ($R_{\rm clump}$). We perform a statistical …
We have carried out mapping observations of molecular emission lines of HC$_{3}$N and CH$_{3}$OH toward two massive cluster-forming clumps, NGC2264-C and NGC2264-D, using the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope. We derive an $I$(HC$_{3}$N)/$I$(CH$_{3}$OH) integrated intensity ratio map, showing a higher value at clumps including 2MASS point sources at the northern part of NGC2264-D. Possible interpretations of the $I$(HC$_{3}$N)/$I$(CH$_{3}$OH) ratio are discussed. We have also observed molecular emission lines from CCS and N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ toward five positions in each clump. We investigate the $N$(N…
It has been shown that ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have higher specific frequencies of globular clusters on average than other dwarf galaxies with similar luminosities. The UDG NGC5846-UDG1 is among the most extreme examples of globular cluster-rich galaxies found so far. Here we present new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations and analysis of this galaxy and its globular cluster system. We find that NGC5846-UDG1 hosts $54 \pm 9$ globular clusters, three to four times more than any previously known galaxy with a similar luminosity, and higher than reported in previous studies. With a ga…
NGC 602 is a young, low-metallicity star cluster in the "Wing" of the Small Magellanic Cloud. We reveal the recent evolutionary past of the cluster through analysis of high-resolution ($\sim$0.4 pc) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of molecular gas in the associated $\textrm{H}\scriptstyle\mathrm{II}$ region N90. We identify 110 molecular clumps ($R <$ 0.8 pc) traced by CO emission, and study the relationship between the clumps and associated young stellar objects (YSOs) and pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars. The clumps have high virial parameters (typical $α_{\rm{vir}} = …
The role played by protostellar feedback in clustered star formation is still a matter of debate. In particular, protostellar outflows have been proposed as a source of turbulence in cluster-forming clumps, which may provide support against global collapse for several free-fall times. Here, we seek to test the above hypothesis in the case of the well-documented NGC 2264-C protocluster, byquantifying the amount of turbulence and support injected in the surrounding medium by protostellar outflows. Using the HERA heterodyne array on the IRAM 30m telescope, we carried out an extensive mapping of N…
We present high-quality BVRI photometric data in the field of globular cluster NGC 6496 obtained with the SOAR Telescope Adaptive Module (SAM). Our observations were collected as part of the ongoing SAM commissioning. The distance modulus and cluster color excess as found from the red clump is $\mMv = 15.71 \pm 0.02$\,mag and $\EVI = 0.28 \pm 0.02$\,mag. An age of $10.5 \pm 0.5$\,Gyr is determined from the difference in magnitude between the red clump and the subgiant branch. These parameters are in excellent agreement with the values derived from isochrone fitting. From the color-magnitude di…
New Gemini mid-infrared spectroscopic observations together with Spitzer Space telescope archival data, are used to study the properties of the dusty torus and circumnuclear star formation in the active galaxies NGC 7213 and NGC 1386. Our main conclusions can be summarised as follows. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission is absent in the T-ReCS nuclear spectra but is ubiquitous in the data from Spitzer at distances above 100 pc. Star formation rates surface densities are estimated from the 12.8 $μm$ [Ne{\sc ii}] line strengths leading to values close to 0.1M$_\odot\,\,{\rm yr}^{-1}\,…
We present Gemini/GNIRS spectroscopy of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388, with simultaneous coverage from 0.85 - 2.5 $μ$m. Several spatially-extended emission lines are detected for the first time, both in the obscured and unobscured portion of the optical narrow line region (NLR), allowing us to assess the combined effects of the central continuum source, outflowing gas and shocks generated by the radio jet on the central 280 pc gas. The HI and [FeII] lines allow us to map the extinction affecting the NLR. We found that the nuclear region is heavily obscured, with E(B-V) ~1.9 mag. To the NE of t…
Using multi-band photometric images of M 51 and its companion NGC 5195 from ultraviolet to optical and infrared, we investigate spatially resolved stellar population properties of this interacting system with stellar population synthesis models. The observed IRX is used to constrain dust extinction. Stellar mass is also inferred from the model fitting. By fitting observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with synthetical ones, we derive two-dimensional distributions of stellar age, metallicity, dust extinction, and stellar mass. In M 51, two grand-designed spiral arms extending from the bu…
The mass segregation of stellar clusters could be primordial rather than dynamical. Despite the abundance of studies of mass segregation for stellar clusters, those for stellar progenitors are still scarce, so the question on the origin and evolution of mass segregation is still open. Our goal is to characterize the structure of the NGC 2264 molecular cloud and compare the populations of clumps and young stellar objects (YSOs) in this region whose rich YSO population has shown evidence of sequential star formation. We separated the Herschel column density map of NGC 2264 in three subregions an…
WIYN/HYDRA spectra in the Li 6708 Angstrom region have been obtained for 332 probable members of the old open cluster, NGC 6819. Preliminary analysis shows a pattern of Li depletion from the top of the turnoff to the base of the giant branch. Starting one magnitude below the level of the clump, all brighter giants have A(Li) below 1.0, with most having upper limits below 0.5. Star W007017, located BELOW the first-ascent red giant bump is Li-rich with A(Li) = 2.3. As a highly probable single-star astrometric and radial-velocity cluster member, its discrepant asteroseismic membership could be a …
We present 3-D hydrodynamical models of the evolution of superbubbles powered by stellar winds and supernovae from young coeval massive star clusters within low metallicity ($Z = 0.02$Z$_{\odot}$), clumpy molecular clouds. We explore the initial stages of the superbubble evolution, including the occurrence of pair-instability and core-collapse supernovae. Our aim is to study the occurrence of dust grain growth within orbiting dusty clumps, and in the superbubble's swept-up supershell. We also aim to address the survival of dust grains produced by sequential supernovae. The model accounts for t…
Open star clusters older than ~ 1 Gyr are rare in the inner Galactic disc. Still, they are objects that hold crucial information for probing the chemical evolution of these regions of the Milky Way. We aim at increasing the number of old open clusters in the inner disc for which high-resolution metal abundances are available. Here we report on NGC 4337, which was recently discovered to be an old, inner disc open cluster. We present the very first high-resolution spectroscopy of seven clump stars that are all cluster members. We performed a detailed abundance analysis for them. We find that NGC…
We present IFU observations with MUSE@VLT and deep imaging with FORS@VLT of a dwarf galaxy recently formed within the giant collisional HI ring surrounding NGC 5291. This TDG-like object has the characteristics of typical z=1-2 gas-rich spiral galaxies: a high gas fraction, a rather turbulent clumpy ISM, the absence of an old stellar population, a moderate metallicity and star formation efficiency. The MUSE spectra allow us to determine the physical conditions within the various complex substructures revealed by the deep optical images, and to scrutinize at unprecedented spatial resolution the…

Mid-Infrared (MIR) images of the Galactic center show extended gas and dust features along with bright IRS sources. Some of these dust features are a part of ionized clumpy streamers orbiting Sgr~A*, known as the mini-spiral. We present their proper motions over 12 year time period and report their flux densities in $N$-band filters {and derive their spectral indices}. The observations were carried out by VISIR at ESO VLT. High-pass filtering led to the detection of several resolved filaments and clumps along the mini-spiral. Each source was fit by a 2-D Gaussian profile to determine the offse…
We present Herschel/SPIRE images at 250, 350, and 500 μm of NGC 4244, a typical low-mass, disk-only and edge-on spiral galaxy. The dust disk is clumpy and shows signs of truncation at the break radius of the stellar disk. This disk coincides with the densest part of the Hi disk. We compare the Spectral Energy Distribution, including the new SPIRE fluxes, to 3D radiative transfer models; a smooth model disk and a clumpy model with embedded heating. Each model requires a very high value for the dust scale-length (h(dust) = 2 - 5 h(stars)), higher dust masses than previous models of NGC 4244 (Md …
We probe the dusty environment of the archetypical type-1 AGN in NGC 4151 with comprehensive IR reverberation mapping over several decades, in J ($\sim1.22μ$m), H ($\sim1.63μ$m), K ($\sim2.19μ$m), L ($\sim3.45μ$m) and N-band ($\sim10.6μm$), plus multiple measurements at 20--40 $μ$m. At 1--4$μ$m, the hot dust reverberation signals come from two distinct dust populations at separate radii ($\sim$0.033 pc and $\sim$0.076 pc), with temperatures of $\sim$1500--2500 K and $\sim$900--1000 K, consistent with the expected properties of sublimating graphite and silicate dust grains. The domination of th…
We have conducted mapping observations toward the n3 and n5 positions in the NGC\,2264-D cluster-forming region with the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Band 3. Observations with 10000 au scale beam reveal the chemical composition at the clump scale. The spatial distributions of the observed low upper-state-energy lines of CH$_{3}$OH are similar to those of CS and SO, and the HC$_{3}$N emission seems to be predominantly associated with clumps containing young stellar objects. The turbulent gas induced by the star formation activities pr…
We present the first overview of the Herschel observations of the nearby high-mass star-forming region NGC 7538, taken as part of the Herschel imaging study of OB Young Stellar objects (HOBYS) Key Programme. These PACS and SPIRE maps cover an approximate area of one square degree at five submillimeter and far-infrared wavebands. We have identified 780 dense sources and classified 224 of those. With the intention of investigating the existence of cold massive starless or class 0-like clumps that would have the potential to form intermediate- to high-mass stars, we further isolate 13 clumps as t…
Star cluster complexes such as the Carina Nebula can have formed in turbulent giant molecular clouds. We perform a series of $N$-body simulations starting from subclustering initial conditions based on hydrodynamic simulations of turbulent molecular clouds. These simulations finally result in the formation of star cluster complexes consisting of several subclusters (clumps). We obtain the inter-clump velocity distribution, the size of the region, and the mass of the most massive cluster in our simulated complex and compare the results with observed ones (the Carina Nebula and NGC 2264). The on…
