Generations of technologies with fundamentally new information processing capabilities will emerge if microscopic physical systems can be controlled to encode, transmit, and process quantum information, at scale and with high fidelity. In the decade after its 2008 inception, the technology of integrated quantum photonics enabled the generation, processing, and detection of quantum states of light, at a steadily increasing scale and level of complexity. Using both established and advanced fabrication techniques, the field progressed from the demonstrations of fixed circuits comprising few components and operating on two photons, to programmable circuitry approaching 1000 components with integrated generation of multi-photon states. A continuation in this trend over the next decade would usher in a versatile platform for future quantum technologies. This Review summarises the advances in integrated photonic quantum technologies (materials, devices, and functionality), and its demonstrated on-chip applications including secure quantum communications, simulations of quantum physical and chemical systems, Boson sampling, and linear-optic quantum information processing.
Current proposals for scalable photonic quantum technologies require on-demand sources of indistinguishable single photons with very high efficiency (having unheralded loss below $1\%$). Even with recent progress in the field there is still a significant gap between the requirements and state of the art performance. Here, we propose an on-chip source of multiplexed, heralded photons. Using quantum feedback control on a photon storage cavity with an optimized driving protocol, we estimate an on-demand efficiency of $99\%$ and unheralded loss of order $1\%$, assuming high efficiency detectors an…
Large-scale quantum technologies require exquisite control over many individual quantum systems. Typically, such systems are very sensitive to environmental fluctuations, and diagnosing errors via measurements causes unavoidable perturbations. In this work we present an in situ frequency locking technique that monitors and corrects frequency variations in single photon sources based on microring resonators. By using the same classical laser fields required for photon generation as a probe to diagnose variations in the resonator frequency, our protocol applies feedback control to correct photon…

However, effective techniques for high-speed modulation of quantum states in standard silicon photonic platforms have been limited. Here we overcome this limitation and demonstrate high-speed low-error quantum key distribution modulation with silicon photonic…
A major roadblock for large-scale photonic quantum technologies is the lack of practical reliable certification tools. We introduce an experimentally friendly - yet mathematically rigorous - certification test for experimental preparations of arbitrary m-mode pure Gaussian states, pure non-Gaussian states generated by linear-optical circuits with n-boson Fock-basis states as inputs, and states of these two classes subsequently post-selected with local measurements on ancillary modes. The protocol is efficient in m and the inverse post-selection success probability for all Gaussian states and a…
Scalable photonic quantum technologies are based on multiple nested interferometers. We present experimental and simulated results to quantify the impact of nonlinear noise in integrated photonic devices relying on spontaneous four-wave mixing. Our results highlight the need for design rule adaptations to mitigate the otherwise intrinsic reduction in quantum state purity. The best strategy in devices with multiple parallel photon sources is to strictly limit photon generation outside of the sources. Otherwise, our results suggest that purity can decrease below 40%.
We theoretically analyze the dynamical evolution of photonic quantum walks on Möbius strips and other exotic structures in 3D integrated photonics. Our flexible design allows discrete observations of continuous time quantum walks of photons in a variety of waveguide arrays. Furthermore, our design allows one to inject photons during the evolution, allowing the possibility of interacting with the photons as they are 'walking'. We find that non-trivial array topologies introduce novel time-dependent symmetries of the two-photon correlations. These properties allow a large degree of control for q…
Optically-addressable solid-state spin defects are promising candidates for storing and manipulating quantum information using their long coherence ground state manifold; individual defects can be entangled using photon-photon interactions, offering a path toward large scale quantum photonic networks. Quantum computing protocols place strict limits on the acceptable photon losses in the system. These low-loss requirements cannot be achieved without photonic engineering, but are attainable if combined with state-of-the-art nanophotonic technologies. However, most materials that host spin defect…
Superradiance, the enhanced collective emission of energy from a coherent ensemble of quantum systems, has been typically studied in atomic ensembles. We analyze the gate error rate to demonstrate that our scheme is realistic even for Josephson devices with limited decoherence times. A conceptually innovative solution based on existing technologies, our scheme provides an integrated and scalable approa…
We propose a protocol for two-qubit quantum phase gate based upon reflection of photon pulses from a quantum dot in a cavity. Depending on the state of the quantum dot the reflected photons acquire a conditional phase shift. The key ingredient is the ultrafast control of the quantum dot energies by electric fields, which allows for tuning the exciton and biexciton successively into resonance with the cavity mode. The complete dynamics of the gate are simulated revealing a fidelity of about 0.9. The proposed scheme uses position-coding and is therefore well suited to the implementation in an in…

Within the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle it is explicitly discussed the impact of these inequalities on the theory of integrated photonics at sub-wavelength regime. More especially, the uncertainty of the effective index values in nanophotonics at sub-wavelength regime, which is defined as the eigenvalue of the overall opto-geometric problems in integrated photonics, appears directly stemming from Heisenberg's uncertainty. An apt formula is obtained allowing us to assume that the incertitude and the notion of eigenvalue called effective optical index or propagation constant is inversely p…

Generating entangled graph states of qubits requires high entanglement rates, with efficient detection of multiple indistinguishable photons from separate qubits. Integrating defect-based qubits into photonic devices results in an enhanced photon collection efficiency, however, typically at the cost of a reduced defect emission energy homogeneity. Here, we demonstrate that the reduction in defect homogeneity in an integrated device can be partially offset by electric field tuning. Using photonic device-coupled implanted nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in a GaP-on-diamond platform, we demonstrate…
