Feature extraction is a key step in image processing for pattern recognition and machine learning processes. Its purpose lies in reducing the dimensionality of the input data through the computing of features which accurately describe the original information. In this article, a new feature extraction method based on Discrete Modal Decomposition (DMD) is introduced, to extend the group of space and frequency based features. These new features are called modal features. Initially aiming to decompose a signal into a modal basis built from a vibration mechanics problem, the DMD projection is applied to images in order to extract modal features with two approaches. The first one, called full scale DMD, consists in exploiting directly the decomposition resulting coordinates as features. The second one, called filtering DMD, consists in using the DMD modes as filters to obtain features through a local transformation process. Experiments are performed on image texture classification tasks including several widely used data bases, compared to several classic feature extraction methods. We show that the DMD approach achieves good classification performances, comparable to the state of the art techniques, with a lower extraction time.
In this paper, we present an efficient and distinctive local descriptor, namely block intensity and gradient difference (BIGD). In an image patch, we randomly sample multi-scale block pairs and utilize the intensity and gradient differences of pairwise blocks to construct the local BIGD descriptor. The random sampling strategy and the multi-scale framework help BIGD descriptors capture the distinctive patterns of patches at different orientations and spatial granularity levels. We use vectors of locally aggregated descriptors (VLAD) or improved Fisher vector (IFV) to encode local BIGD descript…

Infrared and visible image fusion aims to integrate comprehensive information from multiple sources to achieve superior performances on various practical tasks, such as detection, over that of a single modality. However, most existing methods directly combined the texture details and object contrast of different modalities, ignoring the dynamic changes in reality, which diminishes the visible texture in good lighting conditions and the infrared contrast in low lighting conditions. To fill this gap, we propose a dynamic image fusion framework with a multi-modal gated mixture of local-to-global …

Time-frequency representations of audio signals often resemble texture images. This paper derives a simple audio classification algorithm based on treating sound spectrograms as texture images. The algorithm is inspired by an earlier visual classification scheme particularly efficient at classifying textures. While solely based on time-frequency texture features, the algorithm achieves surprisingly good performance in musical instrument classification experiments.

Our method consists of neural network model based on popular U-Net architecture family but modified for the joint nodule segmentation and its texture classification tasks and an ensemble-based model for the follow-up recommendation. This solution was evaluated within the LNDb medical imaging challenge and produced the best nodule segmentation result on the final leaderboard.

Color texture representation is an important step in the task of texture classification. Shortest paths was used to extract color texture features from RGB and HSV color spaces. In this paper, we propose to use shortest paths in the HSI space to build a texture representation for classification. In particular, two undirected graphs are used to model the H channel and the S and I channels respectively in order to represent a color texture image. Moreover, the shortest paths is constructed by using four pairs of pixels according to different scales and directions of the texture image. Experiment…

Biopsies are the gold standard for breast cancer diagnosis. This task can be improved by the use of Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems, reducing the time of diagnosis and reducing the inter and intra-observer variability. The advances in computing have brought this type of system closer to reality. However, datasets of Histopathological Images (HI) from biopsies are quite small and unbalanced what makes difficult to use modern machine learning techniques such as deep learning. In this paper we propose a compact architecture based on texture filters that has fewer parameters than traditiona…
Deep Learning (DL) based methods for magnetic resonance (MR) image reconstruction have been shown to produce superior performance in recent years. However, these methods either only leverage under-sampled data or require a paired fully-sampled auxiliary modality to perform multi-modal reconstruction. Consequently, existing approaches neglect to explore attention mechanisms that can transfer textures from reference fully-sampled data to under-sampled data within a single modality, which limits these approaches in challenging cases. A rigid-motion scattering computes adaptive invariants along translations and rotations, with a deep convolutional network. Convolutions are calculated on the rigid-motion group, with wavelets defined on the translation and rotation variables. It preserves joint rotation and translation information, while providing global invariants at any desired scale. Texture classification is studied, through the characterization of stationary processes from a single realization. State-of-the-art results are obtained on multiple texture data bases, with important rotation and scaling variabilities.

In this work, we propose a novel technique for obtaining descriptors of gray-level texture images. The descriptors are provided by applying a multiscale transform to the fractal dimension of the image estimated through the probability (Voss) method. The effectiveness of the descriptors is verified in a classification task using benchmark over texture datasets. The results obtained demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method as a tool for the description and discrimination of texture images.

The method is tested in the classification of a well-known data set (Brodatz) and compared with other classical texture descriptor techniques. Texture classification is an important and challenging problem in many image processing applications. While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) achieved significant successes for image classification, texture classification remains a difficult problem since textures usually do not contain enough information regarding the shape of object. In image processing, texture classification has been traditionally studied well with spectral analyses which exploit repeated structures in many textures. Since CNNs process images as-is in the spatial domain whereas spectral analyses process images in the fr…

After correcting this bias we demonstrate state-of-the-art performance on the competitive miniImageNet task using a method far simpler than the current best performing few-shot lear…

We introduce a proper notion of 2-dimensional signature for images. This object is inspired by the so-called rough paths theory, and it captures many essential features of a 2-dimensional object such as an image. It thus serves as a low-dimensional feature for pattern classification. Here we implement a simple procedure for texture classification. In this context, we show that a low dimensional set of features based on signatures produces an excellent accuracy.
We present a method for learning discriminative filters using a shallow Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). These filters can be used to extract rotation invariant features well-suited for image classification. We test this learning procedure on a texture classification benchmark, where the orientations of the training images differ from those of the test images. We obtain results comparable to the state-of-the-art. Compared to standard…

In this paper, we use statistical texture features for handwritten and printed text classification. We primarily aim for word level classification in south Indian scripts. Words are first extracted from the scanned document. For each extracted word, statistical texture features are computed such as mean, standard deviation, smoothness, moment, uniformity, entropy and local range including local entropy. These feature vectors are then used to classify words via k-NN classifier. We have validated the approach over several different datasets. Scripts like Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi i.e.…
Some mixtures, such as colloids like milk, blood, and gelatin, have homogeneous appearance when viewed with the naked eye, however, to observe them at the nanoscale is possible to understand the heterogeneity of its components. The same phenomenon can occur in pattern recognition in which it is possible to see heterogeneous patterns in texture images. However, current methods of texture analysis can not adequately describe such heterogeneous patterns. Common methods used by researchers analyse the image information in a global way, taking all its features in an integrated manner. Furthermore, …

This paper proposes a new probabilistic non-extensive entropy feature for texture characterization, based on a Gaussian information measure. The highlights of the new entropy are that it is bounded by finite limits and that it is non additive in nature. The non additive property of the proposed entropy makes it useful for the representation of information content in the non-extensive systems containing some degree of regularity or correlation. The effectiveness of the proposed entropy in representing the correlated random variables is demonstrated by applying it for the texture classification …
