Dust emission, an important diagnostic of star formation and ISM mass throughout the Universe, can be powered by sources unrelated to ongoing star formation. In the framework of the DustPedia project we have set out to disentangle the radiation of the ongoing star formation from that of the older stellar populations. This is done through detailed, 3D radiative transfer simulations of face-on spiral galaxies. In this particular study, we focus on NGC 1068, which contains an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The effect of diffuse dust heating by AGN (beyond the torus) was so far only investigated for quasars. This additional dust heating source further contaminates the broadband fluxes on which classic galaxy modelling tools rely to derive physical properties. We aim to fit a realistic model to the observations of NGC 1068 and quantify the contribution of the several dust heating sources. Our model is able to reproduce the global spectral energy distribution of the galaxy. It matches the resolved optical and infrared images fairly well, but deviates in the UV and the submm. We find a strong wavelength dependency of AGN contamination to the broadband fluxes. It peaks in the MIR, drops in the FIR, but rises again at submm wavelengths. We quantify the contribution of the dust heating sources in each 3D dust cell and find a median value of 83% for the star formation component. The AGN contribution is measurable at the percentage level in the disc, but quickly increases in the inner few 100 pc, peaking above 90%. This is the first time the phenomenon of an AGN heating the diffuse dust beyond its torus is quantified in a nearby star-forming galaxy. NGC 1068 only contains a weak AGN, meaning this effect can be stronger in galaxies with a more luminous AGN. This could significantly impact the derived star formation rates and ISM masses for such systems.
We use recent X-ray observations of the intracluster medium (ICM) of the galaxy group NGC 5813 to confront theoretical studies of ICM thermal evolution with the newly derived ICM properties. We argue that the ICM of the cooling flow galaxy group NGC 5813 is more likely to be heated by mixing of post-shock jets' gas residing in hot bubbles with the ICM, than by shocks or turbulent-heating. Shocks thermalize only a small fraction of their energy in the inner regions of the cooling flow; in order to adequately heat the inner part of the ICM, they would overheat the outer regions by a large factor…
We analyze HCN and HNC emission in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 to investigate its effectiveness in tracing heating processes associated with star formation. This study uses multiple HCN and HNC rotational transitions observed using ALMA via the ALCHEMI Large Program. To understand the conditions and associated heating mechanisms within NGC 253's dense gas, we employ Bayesian nested sampling techniques applied to chemical and radiative transfer models which are constrained using our HCN and HNC measurements. We find that the volume density $n_{\text{H}_{2}}$ and cosmic ray ionization ra…
The nuclear starburst within the central $\sim 15^{\prime\prime}$ ($\sim 250$ pc; $1^{\prime\prime} \simeq 17$ pc) of NGC253 has been extensively studied as a prototype for the starburst phase in galactic evolution. Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) imaging within receiver Bands 6 and 7 have been used to investigate the dense gas structure, kinetic temperature, and heating processes which drive the NGC253 starburst. Twenty-nine transitions from fifteen molecular species/isotopologues have been identified and imaged at $1.^{\prime\prime}5$ to $0.^{\prime\prime}4$ resolution, a…
Investigating the dust heating mechanisms in galaxies provides a deeper understanding of how the internal energy balance drives their evolution. Over the last decade, radiative transfer simulations based on the Monte Carlo method have underlined the role of the various stellar populations heating the diffuse dust. Beyond the expected heating through ongoing star formation, both older stellar population (> 8Gyr) and even AGN can contribute energy to the infrared emission of diffuse dust. Here, we examine how the radiation of an external heating source, like the less massive galaxy NGC5195, in t…
The manner in which gas accretes and orbits within circumnuclear rings has direct implications for the star formation process. In particular, gas may be compressed and shocked at the inflow points, resulting in bursts of star formation at these locations. Afterwards the gas and young stars move together through the ring. In addition, star formation may occur throughout the ring, if and when the gas reaches sufficient density to collapse under gravity. These two scenarios for star formation in rings are often referred to as the `pearls on a string' and `popcorn' paradigms. In this paper, we use…
The grand-design face-on spiral galaxy NGC6946 is remarkable because of its high star formation activity, the massive northern spiral arm, and the magnetic arms, which are observed in polarized radio synchrotron emission and are located between the optical arms and possibly are magnetic reconnection regions. X-ray observations of NGC6946 performed with XMM-Newton were used to study the emission from X-ray point sources and diffuse hot gas, including the magnetic arms and the halo. Spectral fitting of the diffuse X-ray emission allowed us to derive temperatures of the hot gas. With assumptions …
We present the stellar and gaseous kinematics of an Sb galaxy, NGC 3223, with the aim of determining the vertical and radial stellar velocity dispersion as a function of radius, which can help to constrain disk heating theories. Together with the observed NIR photometry, the vertical velocity dispersion is also used to determine the stellar mass-to-light (M/L) ratio, typically one of the largest uncertainties when deriving the dark matter distribution from the observed rotation curve. We find a vertical-to-radial velocity dispersion ratio of sigma_z/sigma_R=1.21+-0.14, significantly higher tha…
We aim at carrying out a comprehensive study of the nearby composite AGN-SB galaxy, NGC 4945, using spectroscopic and photometric data from the Herschel satellite. In particular, we want to characterize the thermal structure in this galaxy by a multi-transitions analysis of the spatial distribution of the 12^CO emission at different spatial scales using HIFI, PACS, SPIRE as well as APEX data. We combined the 12^CO/IR flux ratios and the LTE analysis of the 12^CO images to derive the thermal structure of the Interstellar Medium (ISM) for spatial scales raging from <200 pc to 2 kpc. From the 12^…
We have followed up two ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs), detected adjacent to stellar streams, with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging and HI mapping with the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in order to investigate the possibility that they might have a tidal origin. With the HST F814W and F555W images we measure the globular cluster (GC) counts for NGC 2708-Dw1 and NGC 5631-Dw1 as $2^{+1}_{-1}$ and $5^{+1}_{-2}$, respectively. NGC 2708-Dw1 is undetected in HI down to a 3$σ$ limit of $\log (M_\mathrm{HI}/\mathrm{M_\odot}) = 7.3$, and there is no apparent HI associated with the nearby stellar str…
We present observations of the dense molecular gas tracers HCN, HNC, and HCO+ in the J=1-0 transition using ALMA. We supplement our datasets with previous observations of CO J=1-0, which traces the total molecular gas content. We separate the Antennae into 7 bright regions in which we detect emission from all three molecules, including the nuclei of NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, 5 super giant molecular complexes in the overlap region and 2 additional bright clouds. We find that the ratio of L(HCN)/L(CO), which traces the dense molecular gas fraction, is greater in the two nuclei (L(HCN)/L(CO) ~ 0.07 …
We used the SPIRE/FTS instrument aboard the Herschel Space Observatory (HSO) to obtain the Spectral Line Energy Distributions (SLEDs) of CO from J=4-3 to J=13-12 of Arp 193 and NGC 6240, two classical merger/starbursts selected from our molecular line survey of local Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs: L_{IR}>=10^{11} L_{sol}). The high-J CO SLEDs are then combined with ground-based low-J CO, {13}CO, HCN, HCO+, CS line data and used to probe the thermal and dynamical states of their large molecular gas reservoirs. We find the two CO SLEDs strongly diverging from J=4-3 onwards, with NGC6240 havi…
We present Herschel PACS and SPIRE spectroscopy of the most important far-infrared cooling lines in the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy, NGC 891: [CII] 158 $μ$m, [NII] 122, 205 $μ$m, [OI] 63, 145 $μ$m, and [OIII] 88 $μ$m. We find that the photoelectric heating efficiency of the gas, traced via the ([CII]+[OII]63)/$F_{\mathrm{TIR}}$ ratio, varies from a mean of 3.5$\times$10$^{-3}$ in the centre up to 8$\times$10$^{-3}$ at increasing radial and vertical distances in the disc. A decrease in ([CII]+[OII]63)/$F_{\mathrm{TIR}}$ but constant ([CII]+[OI]63)/$F_{\mathrm{PAH}}$ with increasing FIR colour …

Globular clusters have proven to be essential to our understanding of many important astrophysical phenomena. Here we analyse spectroscopic observations of ten Halo globular clusters to determine their dark matter content, their tidal heating by the Galactic disc and halo, describe their metallicities and the likelihood that Newtonian dynamics explain their kinematics. We analyse a large number of members in all clusters, allowing us to address all these issues together, and we have included NGC 288 and M30 to overlap with previous studies. We find that any flattening of the velocity dispersio…

We present Herschel images from the HOBYS key program of the Eagle Nebula (M16) in the far-infrared and sub-millimetre, using the PACS and SPIRE cameras at 70μm, 160μm, 250μm, 350μm, 500μm. M16, home to the Pillars of Creation, is largely under the influence of the nearby NGC6611 high-mass star cluster. The Herschel images reveal a clear dust temperature gradient running away from the centre of the cavity carved by the OB cluster. We investigate the heating effect of NGC6611 on the entire M16 star-forming complex seen by Herschel including the diffuse cloud environment and the dense filamentar…
Starburst galaxies are undergoing intense periods of star formation. Understanding the heating and cooling mechanisms in these galaxies can give us insight to the driving mechanisms that fuel the starburst. Molecular emission lines play a crucial role in the cooling of the excited gas. With SPIRE on the Herschel Space Observatory we have observed the rich molecular spectrum towards the central region of NGC 253. CO transitions from J=4-3 to 13-12 are observed and together with low-J line fluxes from ground based observations, these lines trace the excitation of CO. By studying the CO excitatio…
We employ hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the underlying mechanism responsible for the low levels of gas and dust in globular clusters. Our models examine the competing effects of energy and mass supply from the various components of the evolved stellar population for globular clusters 47 Tucanae, M15, NGC 6440, and NGC 6752. Ignoring all other gas evacuation processes, we find that the energy output from the stars that have recently turned off the main sequence are capable of effectively clearing the evolved stellar ejecta and producing intracluster gas densities consistent with cur…
We present an axi-symmetric model for the ultraviolet (UV)-to-submillimetre (submm) images of the nearly face-on spiral galaxy NGC 628. It was calculated using a radiative transfer (RT) code, accounting for the absorption and re-emission of starlight by dust in the interstellar medium of this galaxy. The code incorporates emission from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, anisotropic scattering and stochastic heating of the grains. This is the second successful modelling of a face-on spiral galaxy with RT methods, whereby the large-scale geometry of stars and dust is self-consistently determined.…
We present the [CII] 157.7 micron map of galaxy NGC 7331 obtained with FIFI-LS on SOFIA. This map extends an existent Herschel/PACS observation of the central strip of the galaxy to encompass the entire molecular ring and much of the disk, including multiple spiral arms with intense far-IR emission. We also present Herschel archival data of the [NII] 205 micron line which covers a substantial part of the [CII] SOFIA observations and allows us to estimate the neutral fraction of the [CII] emission along the ring and disk of the galaxy. We find that the neutral fraction rises with the distance f…
In external galaxies, some galaxies have higher activities of star formation and central supermassive black holes. The interstellar medium in those galaxies can be heated by different mechanisms such as UV-heating, X-ray heating, cosmic-ray heating, and shock/mechanical heating. Chemical compositions can also be affected by those heating mechanisms. Observations of many molecular species in those nearby galaxies are now possible with the high sensitivity of Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). Here I cover different chemical models for those heating mechanisms. In addition, I …
We present observations of NGC1333 from SCUBA-2 on JCMT, observed as a JCMT Gould Belt Survey pilot project during the shared risk campaign when the first of four arrays was installed at each of 450 and 850 microns. Temperature maps are derived from 450 micron and 850 micron ratios under the assumption of constant dust opacity spectral index beta=1.8. Temperatures indicate that the dust in the northern (IRAS 6/8) region of NGC1333 is hot, 20-40 K, due to heating by the B star SVS3, other young stars in the IR/optically visible cluster, and embedded protostars. Other luminous protostars are als…
We present a multi-wavelength observational study of the NGC 2024 filament using infrared to sub-millimeter continuum and the NH$_3$ $(1,1)$ and $(2,2)$ inversion transitions centered on FIR-3, the most massive core therein. FIR-3 is found to have no significant infrared point sources in the Spitzer/IRAC bands. But the NH$_3$ kinetic temperature map shows a peak value at the core center with $T_{\rm k}=25$ K which is significantly higher than the surrounding level ($T_{\rm k}=15-19$ K). Such internal heating signature without an infrared source suggests an ongoing core collapse possibly at a t…
Interstellar dust plays an important role in the formation of molecular gas and the heating and cooling of the interstellar medium. The spatial distribution of the mm-wavelength dust emission from galaxies is largely unexplored. The NIKA2 Guaranteed Time Project IMEGIN (Interpreting the Millimeter Emission of Galaxies with IRAM and NIKA2) has recently mapped the mm emission in the grand design spiral galaxy NGC6946. By subtracting the contributions from the free-free, synchrotron, and CO line emission, we map the distribution of the pure dust emission at 1:15mm and 2mm. Separating the arm/inte…
NGC 1097 is a nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy with a bright circumnuclear starburst ring, a strong large-scale bar and an active nucleus. We present a detailed study of the spatial variation of the far infrared (FIR) [CII]158um and [OI]63um lines and mid-infrared H2 emission lines as tracers of gas cooling, and of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) bands as tracers of the photoelectric heating, using Herschel-PACS, and Spitzer-IRS infrared spectral maps. We focus on the nucleus and the ring, and two star forming regions (Enuc N and Enuc S). We estimated a photoelectric gas heating efficiency ([…
We have recently detected the [CII] 157.7 micron line in eight star forming galaxies at redshifts 1 to 2 using the redshift(z) Early Universe Spectrometer (ZEUS). Our sample targets star formation dominant sources detected in PAH emission. This represents a significant addition to [CII] observations during the epoch of peak star formation. We have augmented this survey with observations of the [OI] 63 micron line and far infrared photometry from the PACS and SPIRE Herschel instruments as well as Spitzer IRS spectra from the literature showing PAH features. Our sources exhibit above average gas…
We report broad-band (1.2 - 1.9 GHz) radio continuum observations at arcminute resolutions of two nearby disk galaxies, NGC 1808 and NGC 1097, and four AGN powered radio sources; PKS B1934-638, PKS B0407-658, J0240-231, and J0538-440. We use Rotation Measure Synthesis to analyze their Faraday complexity. Observations were made with the KAT\,7 radio telescope array, in South Africa. The AGN powered sources fall into two "Faraday" categories -- simple and complex. The most polarized sources, J0538-440 and J0240-231, are found to have complex Faraday spectra that can be time variable (J0538-440 c…
We present ALMA Cycle 1 observations of the central kpc region of the luminous type-1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469 with unprecedented high resolution (0.5$"$ $\times$ 0.4$"$ = 165 pc $\times$ 132 pc) at submillimeter wavelengths. Utilizing the wide-bandwidth of ALMA, we simultaneously obtained HCN(4-3), HCO$^+$(4-3), CS(7-6), and partially CO(3-2) line maps, as well as the 860 $μ$m continuum. The region consists of the central $\sim$ 1$"$ component and the surrounding starburst ring with a radius of $\sim$ 1.5$"$-2.5$"$. Several structures connect these components. Except for CO(3-2), these dense g…
AGN are a key ingredient for understanding galactic evolution. AGN-driven outflows are one of the manifestations of feedback. The AO mode for MUSE at the VLT permits to study the innermost tens of parsecs of nearby AGN in the optical. We present a detailed analysis of the ionised gas in the central regions of NGC 7130, an archetypical composite Seyfert and nuclear starburst galaxy. We achieve an angular resolution of 0.17$^{\prime\prime}$ (50 pc). We performed a multi-component analysis of the main ISM lines and identified nine kinematic components, six of which correspond to the outflow. The …
NGC1266 is a nearby lenticular galaxy that harbors a massive outflow of molecular gas powered by the mechanical energy of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). It has been speculated that such outflows hinder star formation (SF) in their host galaxies, providing a form of feedback to the process of galaxy formation. Previous studies, however, indicated that only jets from extremely rare, high power quasars or radio galaxies could impart significant feedback on their hosts. Here we present detailed observations of the gas and dust continuum of NGC1266 at millimeter wavelengths. Our observations sho…
We present new far-infrared (FIR) images of the edge-on starburst galaxy NGC253 obtained with the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) onboard AKARI at wavelengths of 90 um and 140 um. We have clearly detected FIR dust emission extended in the halo of the galaxy; there are two filamentary emission structures extending from the galactic disk up to 9 kpc in the northern and 6 kpc in the northwestern direction. From its spatial coincidence with the X-ray plasma outflow, the extended FIR emission is very likely to represent outflowing dust entrained by superwinds. The ratios of surface brightness at 90 um …
NGC 1333 IRAS 4A and IRAS 4B sources are among the best studied Stage 0 low-mass protostars which are driving prominent bipolar outflows. Most studies have so far concentrated on the colder parts (T<30K) of these regions. The aim is to characterize the warmer parts of the protostellar envelope in order to quantify the feedback of the protostars on their surroundings in terms of shocks, UV heating, photodissociation and outflow dispersal. Fully sampled large scale maps of the region were obtained; APEX-CHAMP+ was used for 12CO 6-5, 13CO 6-5 and [CI] 2-1, and JCMT-HARP-B for 12CO 3-2 emissions. …
We present submillimeter spectra of the (proto-)super star cluster (SSC) candidates in the starbursting center of the nearby galaxy NGC 253 identified by Leroy et al. (2018). The 2.5pc resolution of our ALMA cycle 3 observations approach the size of the SSCs and allows the study of physical and chemical properties of the molecular gas in these sources. In the 14 SSC sources and in the frequency ranges 342.0-345.8 GHz and 353.9-357.7 GHz we detect 55 lines belonging to 19 different chemical species. The SSCs differ significantly in chemical complexity, with the richest clusters showing 19 speci…
An ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in NGC 5252 has been known as a strong candidate for an off-nuclear intermediate-mass black hole. We present near-infrared imaging data of the ULX obtained with the William Herschel Telescope. Using this data we estimate a stellar mass associated with the ULX of $\approx 10^{7.9\pm0.1}M_{\rm \odot}$ , suggesting that it could be (the remnant of) a dwarf galaxy that is in the process of merging with NGC 5252. Based on a correlation between the mass of the central black hole (BH) and host galaxy, the ULX is powered by a $10^5M_{\rm \odot}$ black hole. Alternat…
Low mass galaxy cluster systems and groups play an essential role in upcoming cosmological studies such as those to be carried out with eROSITA. Though the effects of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and merging processes are of special importance to quantify biases like selection effects or deviations from hydrostatic equilibrium, they are poorly understood on the galaxy group scale. We present an analysis of recent deep Chandra and XMM-Newton integrations of NGC741, which provides an excellent example of a group with multiple concurrent phenomena: both an old central radio galaxy and a spectacu…
We have run 600 N-body simulations of intermediate-mass (~3500 Msun) young star clusters (SCs) with three different metallicities (Z=0.01, 0.1 and 1 Zsun). The simulations include the dependence of stellar properties and stellar winds on metallicity. Massive stellar black holes (MSBHs) with mass >25 Msun are allowed to form through direct collapse of very massive metal-poor stars (Z<0.3 Zsun). We focus on the demographics of black hole (BH) binaries that undergo mass transfer via Roche lobe overflow (RLO). We find that 44 per cent of all binaries that undergo an RLO phase (RLO binaries) formed…
The Survey of Water and Ammonia in Nearby galaxies (SWAN) studies atomic and molecular species across the nuclei of four star forming galaxies: NGC\,253, IC\,342, NGC\,6946, and NGC\,2146. As part of this survey, we present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) molecular line observations of three galaxies: IC\,342, NGC\,6946 and NGC\,2146. NGC\,253 is covered in a previous paper. These galaxies were chosen to span an order of magnitude in star formation rates and to select a variety of galaxy types. We target the metastable transitions of ammonia NH$_{3}$(1,1) to (5,5), the 22\,GHz water (H$_…
We present observations of an H$α$ emitting knot in the thick disk of NGC 4013, demonstrating it is an H II region surrounding a cluster of young hot stars $z = 860$ pc above the plane of this edge-on spiral galaxy. With LBT/MODS spectroscopy we show this H II region has an H$α$ luminosity $\sim 4$ - 7 times that of the Orion nebula, with an implied ionizing photon production rate $\log Q_0 \gtrsim 49.4$ (photons s$^{-1}$). HST/WFPC2 imaging reveals an associated blue continuum source with $M_{V} = -8.21\pm0.24$. Together these properties demonstrate the H II region is powered by a young clust…
NGC1275, the central galaxy in the Perseus cluster, is the host of gigantic hot bipolar bubbles inflated by AGN jets observed in the radio as Perseus A. It presents a spectacular $Hα$-emitting nebulosity surrounding NGC1275, with loops and filaments of gas extending to over 50 kpc. The origin of the filaments is still unknown, but probably correlates with the mechanism responsible for the giant buoyant bubbles. We present 2.5 and 3-dimensional MHD simulations of the central region of the cluster in which turbulent energy, possibly triggered by star formation and supernovae (SNe) explosions is …
CXO J133815.6+043255 is an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) with ultraviolet, optical, and radio counterparts located 10 kpc away from the nucleus of the galaxy NGC 5252. Optical spectroscopic studies indicate that the ULX is kinematically associated with NGC 5252; yet, the compactness of its radio emission could not rule out the possibility that the ULX is a background blazar. We present follow-up VLBA radio observations that are able to resolve the compact radio emission of the ULX into two components, making the blazar scenario very unlikely. The east component is extended at 4.4 GHz and it…
The discovery of two active black holes in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 3393, separated by about 490 light years, revealed a merging event. This led us to look for other evidences of galaxy collision and merging through the analysis of the observed spectra in different frequency ranges. We found preshock densities higher by a factor of about 10 in the NGC 3393 NLR than in other AGN and patches of ionized matter beyond the observed NLR bulk. They can be explained by compression and heating of the gas downstream of shock waves created by collision. Metallicity in terms of the O/H relative abundance, i…
This paper presents the analysis of candidate quiescent low mass xray binarie (qLMXBs) observed during a short Chandra/ACIS observation of the globular cluster (GC) NGC 6304. Two out of the three candidate qLMXBs of this cluster, XMMU 171433-292747 and XMMU 171421-292917, lie within the field of view. This permits comparison with the discovery observation of these sources. The one in the GC core -- XMMU 171433-292747 -- is spatially resolved into two separate X-ray sources, one of which is consistent with a pure H-atmosphere qLMXB, and the other is an X-ray power-law spectrum source. These two…
We have used ALMA imaging (resolutions 0.1\arcsec-0.4\arcsec) of ground and vibrationally excited lines of HCN and HC$_3$N toward the nucleus of NGC 4945 to trace the protostellar phase in Super Star Clusters (proto-SSC). Out of the 14 identified SSCs, we find that 8 are in the proto-SSC phase showing vibrational HCN emission with 5 of them also showing vibrational HC$_3$N emission. We estimate proto-SSC ages of 5-9.7$\times$10$^4$ yr. The more evolved ones, with only HCN emission, are close to reach the Zero Age Main Sequence (ZAMS; ages $\gtrsim$10$^5$ yr). The excitation of the parental clo…
We present Hi spectral line and radio-continuum VLA data of the galaxy NGC 765, complemented by optical and Chandra X-ray maps. NGC 765 has the largest Hi-to-optical ratio known to date of any spiral galaxy and one of the largest known Hi discs in absolute size with a diameter of 240 kpc measured at a surface density of 2e19 atoms/cm^2. We derive a total Hi mass of M_HI = 4.7e10 Msun, a dynamical mass of Mdyn - 5.1e11 Msun and an Hi mass to luminosity ratio of M_HI/L_B = 1.6, making it the nearest and largest "crouching giant". Optical images reveal evidence of a central bar with tightly wound…
The nearby dwarf galaxy NGC404 harbors a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) powered by the lowest-mass (< 150,000 solar-masses) central massive black hole (MBH) with a dynamical mass constraint currently known, thus providing a rare low-redshift analog to the MBH "seeds" that formed in the early Universe. Here, we present new imaging of the nucleus of NGC404 at 12-18 GHz with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and observations of the CO(2-1) line with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). For the first time, we have successfully resolved the nuclear radio em…
We present results from a very deep (650 ks) Chandra X-ray observation of the galaxy group NGC~5813, the deepest Chandra observation of a galaxy group to date. Earlier observations showed two pairs of cavities distributed roughly collinearly, with each pair associated with an elliptical shock front. The new observations confirm a third pair of outer cavities, collinear with the other pairs, and reveal an associated outer outburst shock at ~30 kpc. This system is therefore unique in exhibiting three cavity pairs, each associated with an unambiguous AGN outburst shock front. The implied mean kin…
The early-type galaxy NGC 3115, at a distance of 10.2 Mpc, hosts the nearest billion-solar-mass black hole. Wong et al. recently inferred a substantial Bondi accretion rate near the black hole. Bondi-like accretion is thought to fuel outflows, which can be traced through their radio emission. This paper reports the discovery of a radio nucleus in NGC 3115, with a diameter less that 0.17 arcsec (8.4 pc), a luminosity at 8.5 GHz of 3.1 x 10^35 ergs/s and a flat spectrum (alpha = -0.23+/-0.20, flux density ~ frequency^alpha). The radio source coincides with the galaxy's photocenter and candidate …
We have undertaken a Spitzer campaign to measure the IR structures and spectra of low-redshift 3CRR radio galaxies. The results show that the 3.6 - 160 micron infrared properties vary systematically with integrated source power, and so demonstrate that contemporary core activity is characteristic of the behaviour of sources over their lifetimes. IR synchrotron emission is seen from jets and hotspots in some cases. Thermal emission is found from a jet/gas interaction in NGC 7385. Most of the near-IR integrated colours of the low-redshift 3CRR radio galaxies are similar to those of passive galax…
We present AGN feedback in the interesting cases of two groups: AWM 4 and NGC 5044. AWM 4 is characterized by a combination of properties which seems to defy the paradigm for AGN heating in cluster cores: a flat inner temperature profile indicative of a past, major heating episode which completely erased the cool core, as testified by the high central cooling time (> 3 Gyrs) and by the high central entropy level (~ 50 keV cm^2), and yet an active central radio galaxy with extended radio lobes out to 100 kpc, revealing recent feeding of the central massive black hole. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are powered by accreting supermassive black holes, surrounded by a torus of obscuring material. Recent studies have shown how the torus structure, formerly thought to be homogeneous, appears to be 'patchy': the detection of variability in the line-of-sight hydrogen column density, in fact, matches the description of an obscurer with a complex structure made of clouds with different column density. In this work, we perform a multi-epoch analysis of the X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7479 in order to estimate its torus properties, such as the average colum…
NGC 6302 (The ''Butterfly Nebula'') is an extremely energetic bipolar nebula whose central star is among the most massive, hottest, and presumably rapidly evolving of all central stars of planetary nebulae. Our proper-motion study of NGC 6302, based on excellent HST WFC3 images spanning 11 yr, has uncovered at least four different pairs of expanding internal lobes that were ejected at various times over the past two millennia at speeds ranging from 10 to 600 km s^-1. In addition, we find a pair of off-axis flows in constant motion at 760 +/- 100 km s^-1 within which bright [Fe II] feathers are…
The main progenitor candidate of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is white dwarfs in binary systems where the companion star is another white dwarf (double degenerate system) or a less evolved non-degenerate star with R* >~ 0.1 Rsun (single degenerate system), but no direct observational evidence exists that tells which progenitor system is more common. Recent studies suggest that the light curve of a supernova shortly after its explosion can be used to set a limit on the progenitor size, R*. Here, we report a high cadence monitoring observation of SN 2015F, a normal SN Ia, in the galaxy NGC 2442 s…
We present the results of deep, high-resolution, 5 GHz Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) observations of the nearby, dwarf lenticular galaxy and intermediate mass black hole candidate (M ~4.5 x 10^5 M_sun), NGC 404. For the first time, radio emission at frequencies above 1.4 GHz has been detected in this galaxy. We found a modestly resolved source in the NGC 404 nucleus with a total radio luminosity of 7.6 +/- 0.7 x 10^17 W/Hz at 5 GHz and a spectral index from 5 to 7.45 GHz of alpha = -0.88 +/- 0.30. NGC 404 is only the third central intermediate mass black hole candidate detected in the radio…
