We first extend our recent experiments of correlation imaging through scattering media to the case of a thick medium, composed of two phase scatterers placed respectively in the image and the Fourier planes of the crystal. The spatial correlations between twin photons are still detected but no more in the form of a speckle. Second, a numerical simulation of the biphoton wave function is developed and applied to our experimental situation, with a good agreement.
High-dimensional biphoton states are promising resources for quantum applications, ranging from high-dimensional quantum communications to quantum imaging. A pivotal task is fully characterising these states, which is generally time-consuming and not scalable when projective measurement approaches are adopted. However, new advances in coincidence imaging technologies allow for overcoming these limitations by parallelising multiple measurements. Here, we introduce biphoton digital holography, in analogy to off-axis digital holography, where coincidence imaging of the superposition of an unknown…
Losses should be accounted for in a complete description of quantum imaging systems, and yet they are often treated as undesirable and largely neglected. In conventional quantum imaging, images are built up by coincidence detection of spatially entangled photon pairs (biphotons) transmitted through an object. However, as real objects are non-unitary (absorptive), part of the transmitted state contains only a single photon, which is overlooked in traditional coincidence measurements. The single photon part has a drastically different spatial distribution than the two-photon part. It contains in…

We systematically studied the temporal profile of biphotons, i.e., pairs of time-correlated single photons, generated from a hot atomic vapor via the spontaneous four-wave mixing process. The measured temporal width of biphoton wave packet or two-photon correlation function against the coupling power was varied from about 70 to 580 ns. We derived an analytical expression of the biphoton's spectral profile in the Doppler-broadened medium. The analytical expression reveals that the spectral profile is mainly determined by the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), and behaves …
We propose a quantum ghost imaging scheme based on biphotons, that, by using a collimated pump beam of the right size for biphoton generation, obviates the need for lenses to achieve imaging. The scheme is found to be analogous to the classical pinhole camera, where we show that the equivalent to the classical pinhole size depends mainly on the width of the pump beam, but also on the thickness of the nonlinear crystal and the wavelengths of the biphoton.
We show that, when the integration time of the single photon detectors is longer than the correlation time of the biphoton, the attainable spatial resolution in ghost imaging with entangled signal idler pairs generated in type II spontaneous parametric down conversion is limited by the angular spread of single-frequency-signal idler pairs. If, however, the detector integration time is shorter than the biphoton correlation time, the transverse k-vectors of different spectral components combine coherently in the image, improving the spatial resolution.
There is renewed interest in using the coherence between beams generated in separate down-converter sources for new applications in imaging, spectroscopy, microscopy and optical coherence tomography (OCT). These schemes make use of continuous wave (CW) pumping in the low parametric gain regime, which produces frequency correlations, and frequency entanglement, between signal-idler pairs generated in each single source. But can induced coherence still be observed if there is no frequency correlation, so the biphoton wavefunction is factorable? We will show that this is the case, and this might …
The effect of turbulence on a pair of photons propagating together through the same medium is analyzed. The behavior is compared to the case where these photons propagate separately through different turbulent media. The analysis is done with a multiple phase screen approach, by deriving and solving an infinitesimal propagation equation. We apply these results to the case where the initial photons are entangled in their spatial degrees of freedom with the aid of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. It is found that for this input state, the decay of entanglement in correlated media under th…
Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is widely used in quantum applications based on photonic entanglement. The efficiency of photon pair generation is often characterized by means of a $sinc(LΔk/2)$-function, where $L$ is the length of the nonlinear medium and $Δk$ the phase mismatch between the pump and down-converted fields. In theoretical investigations, the \textit{sinc} behavior of the phase mismatch has often been approximated by a Gaussian function $\exp{(-αx^2)}$ in order to derive analytical expressions for the SPDC process. Different values have been chosen in the literatur…
We present a method, based on Feynman path integrals, to describe the propagation and properties of the quantised electromagnetic field in an arbitrary, nonlinear medium. We provide a general theory, valid for any order of optical nonlinearity, and we then specialise the the case of second order nonlinear processes. In particular, we show, that second-order nonlinear processes in arbitrary media, under the undepleted pump approximation, can be described by an effective free electromagnetic field, propagating in a vacuum, dressed by the medium itself. Moreover, we show, that the probability of s…
We present the experimental characterization of two distant double-slit masks illuminated by chaotic light, in the absence of first-order imaging and interference. The scheme exploits second-order interference of light propagating through two indistinguishable pairs of {\it disjoint} optical paths passing through the masks of interest. The proposed technique leads to a deeper understanding of biphoton interference and coherence, and opens the way to the development of novel schemes for retrieving information on the relative position and the spatial structure of distant objects, which is of int…
Quantum imaging with undetected photons (QIUP) has recently emerged as a new powerful imaging tool. Exploiting the spatial entanglement of photon pairs, it allows decoupling of the sensing and detection wavelengths, facilitating imaging in otherwise challenging spectral regions with mature silicon-based detection technology. All existing implementations of QIUP have so far utilised the momentum correlations within the biphoton state. Here, for the first time, we implement and examine theoretically and numerically the complementary scenario - utilising the tight position correlations formed wit…
Quantum sensing encompasses highly promising techniques with diverse applications including noise-reduced imaging, super-resolution microscopy as well as imaging and spectroscopy in challenging spectral ranges. These detection schemes use biphoton correlations to surpass classical limits or transfer information to different spectral ranges. Theoretical analysis is mostly confined to idealized conditions. Therefore, theoretical predictions and experimental results for the performance of quantum-sensing systems often diverge. Here we present a general simulation method that includes experimental…
We image with cameras entangled photon light transmitted through a random medium. Near-field and far-field spatial quantum correlations show that entangled photon pairs (bi-photons) generated by spontaneous optical parametric down-conversion exhibit speckle pattern. In contrast, no information from the random medium can be extracted using incoherent light issued from one photon of the pair. Although these measurements require several hours to record thousands of image pairs, our method is instantaneous for the recording of one pair of twin images and involve all the photons of the images.
