For a massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system using intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) equipped with radio frequency (RF) chains, the multi-channel RF chains are expensive compared to passive IRS, especially, when the high-resolution and high-speed analog to digital converters (ADC) are used in each RF channel. In this letter, a direction of angle (DOA) estimation problem is investigated with low-cost ADC in IRS, and we propose a deep neural network (DNN) as a recovery method for the low-resolution sampled signal. Different from the existing denoising convolutional neural network (DnCNN) for Gaussian noise, the proposed DNN with fully connected (FC) layers estimates the quantization noise caused by the ADC. Then, the denoised signal is subjected to the DOA estimation, and the recovery performance for the quantized signal is evaluated by DOA estimation. Simulation results show that under the same training conditions, the better reconstruction performance is achieved by the proposed network than state-of-the-art methods. The performance of the DOA estimation using 1-bit ADC is improved to exceed that using 2-bit ADC.
In this paper, a new signal processing framework is proposed, in which the array time samples are represented in DOA-frequency domain through a single stage problem. It is shown that concatenated array data is well represented in a $\mathbf{G}$ dictionary atoms space, where $\mathbf{G}$ columns correspond to pixels in the DOA-frequency image. We present two approaches for the $\mathbf{G}$ formation and compare the benefits and disadvantages of them. A mutual coherence guaranteed $\mathbf{G}$ manipulation technique is also proposed. Furthermore, unlike most of the existing methods, the proposed…
In this paper, we address the problem of direction finding using coprime array, which is one of the most preferred sparse array configurations. Motivated by the fact that non-uniform element spacing hinders full utilization of the underlying information in the receive signals, we propose a direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm based on low-rank reconstruction of the Toeplitz covariance matrix. The atomic-norm representation of the measurements from the interpolated virtual array is considered, and the equivalent dual-variable rank minimization problem is formulated and solved using a…
We present a gridless sparse iterative covariance-based estimation method based on alternating projections for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. The gridless DOA estimation is formulated in the reconstruction of Toeplitz-structured low rank matrix, and is solved efficiently with alternating projections. The method improves resolution by achieving sparsity, deals with single-snapshot data and coherent arrivals, and, with co-prime arrays, estimates more DOAs than the number of sensors. We evaluate the proposed method using simulation results focusing on co-prime arrays.
Direction of Arrival (DoA) estimation using Sparse Linear Arrays (SLAs) has recently gained considerable attention in array processing thanks to their capability to provide enhanced degrees of freedom in resolving uncorrelated source signals. Additionally, deployment of one-bit Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) has emerged as an important topic in array processing, as it offers both a low-cost and a low-complexity implementation. In this paper, we study the problem of DoA estimation from one-bit measurements received by an SLA. Specifically, we first investigate the identifiability condition…
Multiple signal classification (MUSIC) has been widely applied in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receivers for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. To reduce the cost of radio frequency (RF) chains operating at millimeter-wave bands, hybrid analog-digital structure has been adopted in massive MIMO transceivers. In this situation, the received signals at the antennas are unavailable to the digital receiver, and as a consequence, the spatial covariance matrix (SCM), which is essential in MUSIC algorithm, cannot be obtained using traditional sample average approach. Based on our previous…
In this work, we consider the Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) estimation problem in a low-cost architecture where only one antenna as the receiver is aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). We introduce the one-bit RIS as a signal reflector to enhance signal transmission in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) situations and substantially simplify the physical hardware for DOA estimation. We optimize the beamforming scheme called measurement matrix to focus the echo power on the receiver with the coarse localization information of the targets as the prior. A beamforming scheme based on the modifie…
Estimating the directions of arrival (DOAs) of multiple sources from a single snapshot obtained by a coherent antenna array is a well-known problem, which can be addressed by sparse signal reconstruction methods, where the DOAs are estimated from the peaks of the recovered high-dimensional signal. In this paper, we consider a more challenging DOA estimation task where the array is composed of non-coherent sub-arrays (i.e., sub-arrays that observe different unknown phase shifts due to using low-cost unsynchronized local oscillators). We formulate this problem as the reconstruction of a joint sp…
The purpose of this research is to employ non-uniform arrays in different active and passive sensing applications for both narrowband and wideband operations, while providing a multitude of array processing methodologies that assist in dealing with the different encountered challenges. The problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation using non-uniform arrays is considered. The different challenges that are treated include the reduction of the available degrees-of-freedom (DOFs), the presence of coherent targets, and the mutual coupling effect in practical antenna arrays. Multi-frequency op…
In this letter, we consider the problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation with one-bit quantized array measurements. With analysis, it is shown that, under mild conditions the one-bit covariance matrix can be approximated by the sum of a scaled unquantized covariance matrix and a scaled identity matrix. Although the scaling parameters unknown because of the extreme quantization, they do not affect the subspace-based DOA estimators. Specifically, the signal and noise subspaces can be straightforwardly determined through the eigendecomposition of the one-bit covariance matrix, without pre…
Due to the increasing demand for low power and higher sampling rates, low resolution quantization for data acquisition has drawn great attention recently. Consequently, line spectral estimation (LSE) with multiple measurement vectors (MMVs) from coarsely quantized samples is of vital importance in cutting edge array signal processing applications such as range estimation and DOA estimation in millimeter wave radar systems. In this paper, we combine the low complexity gridless variational line spectral estimation (VALSE) and expectation propagation (EP) and propose an MVALSE-EP algorithm to est…
In this paper, we address the problem of joint direction-of-arrival (DoA) and range estimation using frequency diverse coprime array (FDCA). By incorporating the coprime array structure and coprime frequency offsets, a two-dimensional space-frequency virtual difference coarray corresponding to uniform array and uniform frequency offset is considered to increase the number of degrees-of-freedom (DoFs). However, the reconstruction of the doubly-Toeplitz covariance matrix is computationally prohibitive. To solve this problem, we propose an interpolation algorithm based on decoupled atomic norm mi…
We develop a direction of arrival (DoA) and channel estimation algorithm for the one-bit quantized millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. By formulating the estimation problem as a noisy one-bit compressed sensing problem, we propose a computationally efficient gridless solution based on the expectation-maximization generalized approximate message passing (EMGAMP) approach. The proposed algorithm does not need the prior knowledge about the number of DoAs and outperforms the existing methods in distinguishing extremely close DoAs for the case of one-bit q…
We present DeepFPC, a novel deep neural network designed by unfolding the iterations of the fixed-point continuation algorithm with one-sided l1-norm (FPC-l1), which has been proposed for solving the 1-bit compressed sensing problem. The network architecture resembles that of deep residual learning and incorporates prior knowledge about the signal structure (i.e., sparsity), thereby offering interpretability by design. Once DeepFPC is properly trained, a sparse signal can be recovered fast and accurately from quantized measurements. The proposed model is evaluated in the task of direction-of-a…
The latest theoretical advances in the field of unlimited sampling framework (USF) show the potential to avoid clipping problems of analog-to-digital converters (ADC). To date, most of the related works have focused on real-valued modulo samples, but little has been reported about the impact of quantization. In this paper, we study more practical USF system where modulo samples are quantized to a finite number of bits. In particular, we present a new requirement about the lower bound of sampling rate to ensure exact recovery of original signals from quantized modulo samples. The minimum sampli…

In this paper, we present a single-pixel compressive direction of arrival (DoA) estimation technique leveraging a graph attention network (GAT)-based deep-learning framework. The physical layer compression is achieved using a coded-aperture technique, probing the spectrum of far-field sources that are incident on the aperture using a set of spatio-temporally incoherent modes. This information is then encoded and compressed into the channel of the coded-aperture. The coded-aperture is based on a metasurface antenna design and it works as a receiver, exhibiting a single-channel and replacing the…

Directional, diffuse components and the source position information are estimated at the transmitter, and perceptually effective reproduction is considered at the receiver. We consider spatially distributed microphone arrays for signal acquisition, and node specific signal estimation, along with its direction of arrival (DoA) estimation. Estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) of sources is an important problem in aerospace and vehicular communication, localization and radar. In this paper, we consider a challenging multi-source DOA estimation task, where the receiving antenna array is composed of non-coherent sub-arrays, i.e., sub-arrays that observe different unknown phase shifts at every snapshot (e.g., due to waiving the demanding synchronization of local oscillators across the entire array). We formulate this problem as the reconstruction of joint sparse and low-rank matrices, and solve the problem's convex relaxation. …
A new array signal reconstruction and signal-channel DOA estimation method based on TMLA by nonuniform period modulation are proposed. By using non-uniform period modulation, the harmonic component produced by different elements could be separated. Therefore, the conventional snapshot could be reconstructed by analyzing the spectrum of the combined signal. Then spatial spectrum estimation method is used to implement DOA estimation. Numerical simulations are provided to verify the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method. Since the duration of the signal in the frequency domain analysis …
Sparse signals, encountered in many wireless and signal acquisition applications, can be acquired via compressed sensing (CS) to reduce computations and transmissions, crucial for resource-limited devices, e.g., wireless sensors. Since the information signals are often continuous-valued, digital communication of compressive measurements requires quantization. In such a quantized compressed sensing (QCS) context, we address remote acquisition of a sparse source through vector quantized noisy compressive measurements. We propose a deep encoder-decoder architecture, consisting of an encoder deep …

In this paper, we present two variations of an algorithm for signal reconstruction from one-bit or two-bit noisy observations of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT). The one-bit observations of the DFT correspond to the sign of its real part, whereas, the two-bit observations of the DFT correspond to the signs of both the real and imaginary parts of the DFT. We focus on images for analysis and simulations, thus using the sign of the 2D-DFT. This choice of the class of signals is inspired by previous works on this problem. For our algorithm, we show that the expected mean squared error (MSE) i…
This work considers the precoding problem in massive multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems equipped with low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs). In previous literature on this topic, it is commonly assumed that the channel state information (CSI) is perfectly known. However, in practical applications the CSI is inevitably contaminated by noise. In this paper, we propose, for the first time, an eigen-inference (EI) precoding scheme to improve the error performance of the coarsely quantized massive MU-MIMO systems under imperfect CSI, which is mathematically mode…
In this paper, we present a communication-efficient federated learning framework inspired by quantized compressed sensing. The presented framework consists of gradient compression for wireless devices and gradient reconstruction for a parameter server (PS). Our strategy for gradient compression is to sequentially perform block sparsification, dimensional reduction, and quantization. Thanks to gradient sparsification and quantization, our strategy can achieve a higher compression ratio than one-bit gradient compression. For accurate aggregation of the local gradients from the compressed signals…
In this paper, we investigate a trade-off between the number of radar observations (or measurements) and their resolution in the context of radar range estimation. To this end, we introduce a novel estimation scheme that can deal with strongly quantized received signals, going as low as 1-bit per signal sample. We leverage for this a dithered quantized compressive sensing framework that can be applied to classic radar processing and hardware. This allows us to remove ambiguous scenarios prohibiting correct range estimation from (undithered) quantized base-band radar signal. Two range estimatio…

This work focuses on the reconstruction of sparse signals from their 1-bit measurements. The context is the one of 1-bit compressive sensing where the measurements amount to quantizing (dithered) random projections. Our main contribution shows that, in addition to the measurement process, we can additionally reconstruct the signal with a binarization of the sensing matrix. This binary representation of both the measurements and sensing matrix can dramatically simplify the hardware architecture on embedded systems, enabling cheaper and more power efficient alternatives. Within this framework, g…

This paper proposes a deconvolution-based network (DCNN) model for DOA estimation of direct source and early reflections under reverberant scenarios. Considering that the first-order reflections of the sound source also contain spatial directivity like the direct source, we treat both of them as the sources in the learning process. We use the covariance matrix of high order Ambisonics (HOA) signals in the time domain as the input feature of the network, which is concise while containing precise spatial information under reverberant scenarios. Besides, we use the deconvolution-based network for…
