Quantum materials display exotic behaviours related to the interplay between temperature-driven phase transitions. Here, we study electron dynamics in one such material, CaFe2As2, a parent Fe-based superconductor, employing time and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. CaFe2As2 exhibits concomitant transition to spin density wave state and nematic order below 170 K. We discover that magnetic excitations can be induced selectively, by using polarized pump pulses, significantly before the destruction of nematic order. More specifically, we observe that s-polarized light enhances electron temperature by several hundreds of degrees at a time scale of about 200 fs, while the temperature of the electrons participating in magnetic order can be enhanced by similar amount at a much faster time scale (50 fs) using p-polarized pump pulse. These results provide a pathway to achieve selective electron heating, which is not possible with other methods, as well as to disentangle phase transitions in quantum materials.
FeSe is an intriguing iron-based superconductor. It presents an unusual nematic state without magnetism and can be tuned to increase the critical superconducting temperature. Recently it has been observed a noteworthy anisotropy of the superconducting gaps. Its explanation is intimately related to the understanding of the nematic transition itself. Here we show that the spin-nematic scenario driven by orbital-selective spin-fluctuations provides a simple scheme to understand both phenomena. The pairing mediated by anisotropic spin modes is not only orbital selective but also nematic, leading t…
We study the dc conductivity of iron-based superconductors within the orbital-selective spin fluctuation scenario. Within this approach, the anisotropy of spin fluctuations below the spin-nematic transition at T$_S$ is also responsible for the orbital ordering, induced by nematic self-energy corrections to the quasiparticle dispersion. As a consequence, the anisotropy of the dc conductivity below T$_S$ is determined not only by the anisotropy of the scattering rates as expected within a spin-nematic scenario, but also by the modification of the Fermi velocity due to the orbital reconstruction.…
The interplay between electronic orders and superconductivity is central to the physics of unconventional superconductors, and is particularly pronounced in the iron-based superconductors. Motivated by recent experiments on FeSe, we study the superconducting pairing in its nematic phase in a multiorbital model with frustrated spin-exchange interactions. The electron correlations in the presence of the nematic order give rise to an enhanced orbital selectivity in the superconducting pairing amplitudes. This orbital-selective pairing produces a large gap anisotropy on the Fermi surface. Our resu…
Understanding the interplay of structural and electronic symmetry breaking in Fe-based high temperature superconductors remains of high interest. In this work we grow strain-patterned multilayer FeSe thin films in a range of thicknesses using molecular beam epitaxy. We study the formation of electronic nematic domains and spatially-varying strain using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We directly visualize the formation of edge dislocations that give rise to a two-dimensional edge dislocation network in the films. Interestingly, we observe a 45 degree in-plane rotation of the di…
We derive the effective action for the collective spin modes in iron-based superconductors. We show that, due to the orbital-selective nature of spin fluctuations, the magnetic and nematic instabilities are controlled by the degrees of orbital nesting between electron and hole pockets. Within a prototypical three-pockets model the hole-electron orbital mismatch is found to boost spin-nematic order. This explains the enhancement of the nematic order in FeSe as compared to 122 compounds, and its suppression under pressure, where the emergence of the second hole pocket compensates the orbital mis…
Bulk FeSe is a special iron-based material in which superconductivity emerges inside a well-developed nematic phase. We present a microscopic model for this nematic superconducting state, which takes into account the mixing between $s-$wave and $d-$wave pairing channels and the changes in the orbital spectral weight promoted by the sign-changing nematic order parameter. We show that nematicity gives rise to a $\cos2θ$ variation of the pairing gap on the hole pocket that agrees with ARPES and STM data for experimentally-extracted Fermi surface parameters. We further argue that, in BCS theory, $…

Nematic phase intertwines closely with high-Tc superconductivity in iron-based superconductors. Its mechanism, which is closely related to the pairing mechanism of superconductivity, still remains controversial. Comprehensive characterization of how the electronic state reconstructs in the nematic phase is thus crucial. However, most experiments focus only on the reconstruction of band dispersions. Another important characteristic of electronic state, the spectral weight, has not been studied in details so far. Here, we studied the spectral weight transfer in the nematic phase of FeSe$_{0.9}$S…
Motivated by the recent low-tempearture experiments on bulk FeSe, we study the electron correlation effects in a multiorbital model for this compound in the nematic phase using the U(1) slave-spin theory. We find that a finite nematic order helps to stabilize an orbital selective Mott phase. Moreover, we propose that when the d- and s-wave bond nematic orders are combined with the ferro-orbital order, there exists a surprisingly large orbital selectivity between the xz and yz orbitals even though the associated band splitting is relatively small. Our results explain the seemingly unusual obser…
Motivated by the recent experiments suggesting the importance of nematicity in the phase diagrams of ironbased and cuprate high-Tc superconductors, we study the influence of nematicity on the collective modes inside the superconducting state in a non-equilibrium. In particular, we consider the signatures of collective modes in short-time dynamics of a system with competing nematic and s- and d-wave superconducting orders. In the rotationally symmetric state, we show that the Bardasis-Schrieffer mode, corresponding to the subdominant pairing, hybridizes with the nematic collective mode and merg…
We report a Raman scattering study of nematic degrees of freedom in the iron-based superconductor parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under tunable uniaxial strain. We demonstrate that the polarization resolved arsenic (As) phonon intensity can be used to monitor the nematic order parameter as a function of both temperature and strain. At low temperature in the nematic ordered phase we use it to track the continuous and reversible orientation of nematic domains under variable strain. At higher temperature, the evolution of the As phonon intensity under strain reflects an enhanced nematic susceptibi…
Electron correlations play a central role in iron-based superconductors. In these systems, multiple Fe $3d$-orbitals are active in the low-energy physics, and they are not all degenerate. For these reasons, the role of orbital-selective correlations has been an active topic in the study of the iron-based systems. In this paper, we survey the recent developments on the subject. For the normal state, we emphasize the orbital-selective Mott physics that has been extensively studied, especially in the iron chalcogenides, in the case of electron filling $n \sim 6$. In addition, the interplay betwee…
The existence of orbital-dependent electronic correlations has been recognized as an essential ingredient to describe the physics of iron-based superconductors. NaFeAs, a parent compound of iron based superconductors, exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic lattice distortion below $T_s\approx 60$ K, forming an electronic nematic phase with two 90$^\circ$ rotated (twinned) domains, and orders antiferromagnetically below $T_N\approx 42$ K. We use inelastic neutron scattering to study spin waves in uniaxial pressure-detwinned NaFeAs. By comparing the data with combined density functional theory an…
Electric Transport of a Single Crystal Iron Chalcogenide FeSe Superconductor: Evidence of Symmetry Breakdown Nematicity and Additional Ultrafast Dirac cone-Like Carriers
We report on time-resolved linear and nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy of the two-band superconductor MgB$_2$ with the superconducting transition temperature $T_c \approx 36$ K. Third-harmonic generation (THG) is observed below $T_c$ by driving the system with intense narrowband THz pulses. For the pump-pulse frequencies $f=$ 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 THz, temperature-dependent evolution of the THG signals exhibits a resonance maximum at the temperatures with the resonance conditions $2f=2Δ_π(T)$ fulfilled, for the dirty-limit superconducting gap $2Δ_π$. In contrast, for $f=$ 0.6 and 0.7 THz with $2f>…
We report here an experimental setup to perform three-pulse pump-probe measurements over a wide wavelength and temperature range. By combining two pump pulses in the visible (650-900 nm) and mid-IR (5-20 $μ$m) range, with a broadband supercontinuum white-light probe, our apparatus enables both the combined selective excitation of different material degrees of freedom and a full time-dependent reconstruction of the non-equilibrium dielectric function of the sample. We describe here the optical setup, the cryogenic sample environment and the custom-made acquisition electronics capable of referen…
