Given the complexity of combinations of tasks, languages, and domains in natural language processing (NLP) research, it is computationally prohibitive to exhaustively test newly proposed models on each possible experimental setting. In this work, we attempt to explore the possibility of gaining plausible judgments of how well an NLP model can perform under an experimental setting, without actually training or testing the model. To do so, we build regression models to predict the evaluation score of an NLP experiment given the experimental settings as input. Experimenting on 9 different NLP tasks, we find that our predictors can produce meaningful predictions over unseen languages and different modeling architectures, outperforming reasonable baselines as well as human experts. Going further, we outline how our predictor can be used to find a small subset of representative experiments that should be run in order to obtain plausible predictions for all other experimental settings.
Recent advances in natural language processing (NLP) have the ability to transform how classroom learning takes place. Combined with the increasing integration of technology in today's classrooms, NLP systems leveraging question answering and dialog processing techniques can serve as private tutors or participants in classroom discussions to increase student engagement and learning. To progress towards this goal, we use the classroom discourse framework of academically productive talk (APT) to learn strategies that make for the best learning experience. In this paper, we introduce a new task, …
The dearth of clean textual data often acts as a bottleneck in several natural language processing applications. The data available often lacks proper case (uppercase or lowercase) information. This often comes up when text is obtained from social media, messaging applications and other online platforms. This paper attempts to solve this problem by restoring the correct case of characters, commonly known as Truecasing. Doing so improves the accuracy of several processing tasks further down in the NLP pipeline. Our proposed architecture uses a combination of convolutional neural networks (CNN),…

The notions of concreteness and imageability, traditionally important in psycholinguistics, are gaining significance in semantic-oriented natural language processing tasks. In this paper we investigate the predictability of these two concepts via supervised learning, using word embeddings as explanatory variables. We perform predictions both within and across languages by exploiting collections of cross-lingual embeddings aligned to a single vector space. We show that the notions of concreteness and imageability are highly predictable both within and across languages, with a moderate loss of u…

The classification efficiencies obtained using a pre-trained BERT model …
We must recognize that natural language is a way of information encoding, and it encodes not only the information but also the procedures for how information is processed. To understand natural language, the same as we conceive and design computer languages, the first step is to separate information (or data) and the processing procedures of information (or data). In natural language, some processing procedures of data are encoded directly as the structure chunk and the pointer chunk (this paper has reclassified lexical chunks as the data chunk, structure chunk, and the pointer chunk); some pr…

This paper presents an NLP (Natural Language Processing) approach to detecting spoilers in book reviews, using the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Goodreads Spoiler dataset. We explored the use of LSTM, BERT, and RoBERTa language models to perform spoiler detection at the sentence-level. This was contrasted with a UCSD paper which performed the same task, but using handcrafted features in its data preparation. Despite eschewing the use of handcrafted features, our results from the LSTM model were able to slightly exceed the UCSD team's performance in spoiler detection.

A key aim of science is explanation, yet the idea of explaining language phenomena has taken a backseat in mainstream Natural Language Processing (NLP) and many other areas of Artificial Intelligence. I argue that explanation of linguistic behaviour should be a main goal of NLP, and that this is not the same as making NLP models explainable. To illustrate these ideas, some recent models of human language production are compared with each other. I conclude by asking what it would mean for NLP research and institutional policies if our community took explanatory value seriously, while heeding so…

Considering the seq2seq architecture of TranX for natural language to code translation, we identify four key components of importance: grammatical constraints, lexical preprocessing, input representations, and copy mechanisms. To study the impact of these components, we use a state-of-the-art architecture that relies on BERT encoder and a grammar-based decoder for which a formalization is provided. The paper highlights the importance of the lexical substitution component in the current natural language to code systems.

The constrained grammar facilitates modeling specific directions and road names in a roadmap. We present a novel particle filtering algorithm that exploits the CSCFG model for estimating the target's patterns. This meta-level algorithm operates in conjunction with a base-level tracking algorithm. Extensive num…
Deep neural networks (DNN) have revolutionized the field of natural language processing (NLP). Convolutional neural network (CNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN), the two main types of DNN architectures, are widely explored to handle various NLP tasks. CNN is supposed to be good at extracting position-invariant features and RNN at modeling units in sequence. The state of the art on many NLP tasks often switches due to the battle between CNNs and RNNs. This work is the first systematic comparison of CNN and RNN on a wide range of representative NLP tasks, aiming to give basic guidance for DN…

A system is described that uses a mixed-level knowledge representation based on standard Horn Clause Logic to represent (part of) the meaning of natural language documents. A variable-depth search strategy is outlined that distinguishes between the different levels of abstraction in the knowledge representation to locate specific passages in the documents. A detailed description of the linguistic aspects of the system is given. Mixed-level representations as well as variable-depth search strategies are applicable in fields outside that of NLP.

Similarity judgments provide a well-established method for accessing mental representations, with applications in psychology, neuroscience and machine learning. However, collecting similarity judgments can be prohibitively expensive for naturalistic datasets as the number of comparisons grows quadratically in the number of stimuli. One way to tackle this problem is to construct approximation procedures that rely on more accessible proxies for predicting similarity. Here we leverage recent advances in language models and online recruitment, proposing an efficient domain-general procedure for pr…

Despite being designed for performance rather than cognitive plausibility, transformer language models have been found to be better at predicting metrics used to assess human language comprehension than language models with other architectures, such as recurrent neural networks. Based on how well they predict the N400, a neural signal associated with processing difficulty, we propose and provide evidence for one possible explanation - their predictions are affected by the preceding context in a way analogous to the effect of semantic facilitation in humans.

This thesis develops the translation between category theory and computational linguistics as a foundation for natural language processing. The three chapters deal with syntax, semantics and pragmatics. First, string diagrams provide a unified model of syntactic structures in formal grammars. Second, functors compute semantics by turning diagrams into logical, tensor, neural or quantum computation. Third, the resulting functorial models can be composed to form games where equilibria are the solutions of language processing tasks. This framework is implemented as part of DisCoPy, the Python lib…

We introduce a method for analyzing the complexity of natural language processing tasks, and for predicting the difficulty new NLP tasks. Our complexity measures are derived from the Kolmogorov complexity of a class of automata --- {\it meaning automata}, whose purpose is to extract relevant pieces of information from sentences. Natural language semantics is defined only relative to the set of questions an automaton can answer. The paper shows examples of complexity estimates for various NLP programs and tasks, and some recipes for complexity management. It positions natural language processin…

This paper discusses the use of `ontologies' in Natural Language Processing. It classifies various kinds of ontologies that have been employed in NLP and discusses various benefits and problems with those designs. Particular focus is then placed on experiences gained in the use of the Upper Model, a linguistically-motivated `ontology' originally designed for use with the Penman text generation system. Some proposals for further NLP ontology design criteria are then made.
Semi-supervised classification is an interesting idea where classification models are learned from both labeled and unlabeled data. It has several advantages over supervised classification in natural language processing domain. For instance, supervised classification exploits only labeled data that are expensive, often difficult to get, inadequate in quantity, and require human experts for annotation. On the other hand, unlabeled data are inexpensive and abundant. Despite the fact that many factors limit the wide-spread use of semi-supervised classification, it has become popular since its lev…
Natural language processing is a branch of computer science that combines artificial intelligence with linguistics. It aims to analyze a language element such as writing or speaking with software and convert it into information. Considering that each language has its own grammatical rules and vocabulary diversity, the complexity of the studies in this field is somewhat understandable. For instance, Turkish is a very interesting language in many ways. Examples of this are agglutinative word structure, consonant/vowel harmony, a large number of productive derivational morphemes (practically infi…
