The Klebanov-Strassler black hole is a holographic dual to ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric $SU(N)\times SU(N+M)$ cascading gauge theory plasma with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. The chiral symmetry breaking sector of the cascading gauge theory contains two dimension-3 operators and a single dimension-7 operator. The black hole solution constructed in arXiv:1809.08484 represents the end point of the instability triggered by the condensation of one of the dimension-3 operators. We study here all three branches of the quasinormal modes of the chiral symmetry breaking sector -- there are no additional instabilities beyond the one identified in arXiv:1012.2404. Thus, the Klebanov-Strassler black hole solution of arXiv:1809.08484 is the only one with homogeneous and isotropic horizon, perturbatively connected to the chirally symmetric Klebanov-Tseytlin black hole arXiv:0706.1768.
We study 5d supersymmetric black holes which descend from strings of generic $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supergravity in 6d. These strings have an F-theory realization in 6d as D3 branes wrapping smooth genus $g$ curves in the base of elliptic 3-folds. They enjoy $(0,4)$ worldsheet supersymmetry with an extra $SU(2)_L$ current algebra at level $g$ realized on the left-movers. When the smooth curves degenerate they lead to multi-string branches and we find that the microscopic worldsheet theory flows in the IR to disconnected 2d CFTs having different central charges. The single string sector is the one…
In this paper we analyse non-supersymmetric single centred extremal black hole solutions in N=2 supergravity theory coupled to $n$ vector multiplets with purely cubic pre-potential in four dimensions. We consider the algebraic attractor equations in their most general form at the black hole horizon. We explicitly construct a new class of solutions for these attractor equations. These solutions are characterised by a set of involutory matrices. These involutions are obtained from a constraint involving the parameters in the pre-potential and generate new attractor points in the moduli space.
There are two important different mechanisms, the imaginary potential and entropic force, to investigate the dissociation of heavy quarkonia. In this paper, we calculate these two quantities for static and moving quarkonia in the rotating black 3-brane Type IIB supergravity solution dual to N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory on the Coulomb branch (cSYM) at strong coupling. At T 6= 0, there are two black hole branches: the large and small black hole branches. We investigate the effects of rotating parameter and rapidity for the static and moving quakonium at the large and small black hole branches. …
In holography, quasinormal spectra of black branes coincide with the poles of retarded finite-temperature correlation functions of a dual quantum field theory in the limit of infinite number of relevant degrees of freedom such as colours. For asymptotically anti-de Sitter backgrounds, the spectra form a characteristic pattern in the complex frequency plane, colloquially known as the "Christmas tree". At infinite coupling, the tree has only one pair of branches. At large but finite coupling, the branches become more dense and lift up towards the real axis, consistent with the expectation of for…
We discuss the branching structure of the quantum-gravitational wave function that describes the evaporation of a black hole. A global wave function which initially describes a classical Schwarzschild geometry is continually decohered into distinct semiclassical branches by the emission of Hawking radiation. The laws of quantum mechanics dictate that the wave function evolves unitarily, but this unitary evolution is only manifest when considering the global description of the wave function; it is not implemented by time evolution on a single semiclassical branch. Conversely, geometric notions …
We numerically construct asymptotically $AdS_4$ solutions to Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. These have a dipolar electrostatic potential turned on at the conformal boundary $S^2\times \mathbb{R}_t$. We find two classes of geometries: $AdS$ soliton solutions that encode the full backreaction of the electric field on the $AdS$ geometry without a horizon, and neutral black holes that are "polarised" by the dipolar potential. For a certain range of the electric field $\mathcal{E}$, we find two distinct branches of the $AdS$ soliton that exist for the same value of $\mathcal{E}$. For the black ho…
We perform a systematic study of the Maxwell quasinormal spectrum in a mirror-like cavity following the generic Robin type vanishing energy flux principle, by starting with the Schwarzschild black holes in this paper. It is shown that, for black holes in a cavity, the vanishing energy flux principle leads to \textit{two} different sets of boundary conditions. By solving the Maxwell equations with these two boundary conditions both analytically and numerically, we observe \textit{two} distinct sets of modes. This indicates that the vanishing energy flux principle may be applied not only to asym…
We demonstrate that rotating dyonic black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion (EMDA) theory is holographically dual with 2D conformal field theory. We first investigate the duality on dyonic Kerr-Sen black hole with non-vanishing dilaton and axion charges. The near-horizon geometry of extremal dyonic Kerr-Sen spacetime possesses the $SL(2,R) \times U (1)$ isometry allowing to employ the asymptotic symmetry group method to find the corresponding central charge. We find two different branches of the mass which correspond to CFT with two different central charges $c_L=12am_+$ and $c_L=12am_-$…
We investigate the thermodynamics of Kerr-Newman-Kasuya black hole and the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole with a global monopole on inner and outer horizons. Products of surface gravities, surface temperatures, Komar energies, electromagnetic potentials, angular velocities, areas, entropies, horizon radii and the irreducible masses at the Cauchy and the event horizons are calculated. It is observed that the product of surface gravities, surface temperature product and product of Komar energies, electromagnetic potentials and angular velocities at horizons are not universal quantities for these…
It has recently been found that quasinormal modes of asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in theories with higher curvature corrections may help to describe the regime of intermediate 't Hooft coupling in the dual field theory. Here, we consider quasinormal modes of a scalar field in the background of spherical Gauss--Bonnet--anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes. In general, the eigenvalues of wave equations are found here numerically, but at a fixed Gauss-Bonnet constant $α= R^2/2$ (where $R$ is the AdS radius), an exact solution of the scalar field equation has been obtained. Remarkab…
In this paper, we re-examine charged Q-clouds around spherically symmetric, static black holes. In particular, we demonstrate that for fixed coupling constants two different branches of charged scalar clouds exist around Schwarzschild black holes. This had not been noticed previously. We find that the new solutions possess a "hard wall" at maximal possible gauge coupling. This wall separates the interior (containing the black hole horizon), in which the scalar field is trapped in the "false vacuum", from the "true vacuum" exterior. When taking back-reaction onto the space-time into account, we…
Sufficiently small Schwarzschild black holes in global AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ are Gregory-Laflamme unstable. We construct new families of black hole solutions that bifurcate from the onset of this instability and break the full SO$(6)$ symmetry group of the S$^5$ down to SO$(5)$. These new "lumpy" solutions are labelled by the harmonics $\ell$. We find evidence that the $\ell = 1$ branch never dominates the microcanonical/canonical ensembles and connects through a topology-changing merger to a localised black hole solution with S$^8$ topology. We argue that these S$^8$ black holes should become th…
We find and study the properties of black hole solutions for a subclass of Horndeski theory including the cubic Galileon term. The theory under study has shift symmetry but not reflection symmetry for the scalar field. The Galileon is assumed to have linear time dependence characterized by a velocity parameter. We give analytic 3-dimensional solutions that are akin to the BTZ solutions but with a non-trivial scalar field that modifies the effective cosmological constant. We then study the 4-dimensional asymptotically flat and de Sitter solutions. The latter present three different branches acc…
We introduce a new microscopic quantity $\varepsilon $ that describes the contribution of a single black hole molecule to black hole entropy and give a key relation that this microscopic quantity is proportional to the macroscopic quantity -- entropy surface density $σ_{S}$, thus connecting a microscopic quantity to a macroscopic quantity of black holes. Such a connection provides a new probe for understanding the black hole microstructure from the macroscopic perspective. We also classify black holes in terms of entropy surface density. When its entropy surface density is larger (smaller) tha…
A new branch of black hole solutions occurs along with the standard Schwarzschild branch in $n$-dimensional extensions of general relativity including terms quadratic in the Ricci tensor. The standard and new branches cross at a point determined by a static negative-eigenvalue eigenfunction of the Lichnerowicz operator, analogous to the Gross-Perry-Yaffe eigenfunction for the Schwarzschild solution in standard $n=4$ dimensional general relativity. This static eigenfunction has two rôles: both as a perturbation away from Schwarzschild along the new black-hole branch and also as a threshold unst…
We study the propagation of probe scalar fields in the background of 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes with anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotics and calculate the quasinormal modes. Mainly, we show that the quasinormal spectrum consists of two different branches, a branch perturbative in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$ and another branch nonperturbative in $α$. The perturbative branch consists of complex quasinormal frequencies that approximate to the quasinormal frequencies of the Schwarzschild AdS black hole in the limit of a null coupling constant. On the other hand, the nonperturbati…
We extend the recently proposed Black Hole Entropy Distance Conjecture to the case of charged black holes in de Sitter space. By systematically studying distances in the space of black hole geometries with multiple horizons, we find that the distance is generically related to the logarithm of the entropy. From the infinite distance conjecture this predicts the appearance of a massless tower of modes in the limit of infinite entropy. Further, we study the evaporation of these black holes and relate it to the geometric distance. We find that the corresponding distance to the final stage of evapo…
We study some physical properties of black holes in Null Aether Theory (NAT)--a vector-tensor theory of gravity. We first review the black hole solutions in NAT and then derive the first law of black hole thermodynamics. The temperature of the black holes depends on both the mass and the NAT \textquotedblleft charge" of the black holes. The extreme cases where the temperature vanishes resemble the extreme Reissner-Nordström black holes. We also discuss the contribution of the NAT charge to the geodesics of massive and massless particles around the NAT black holes.
The thermodynamic geometry has been proved to be quite useful in understanding the microscopic structure of black holes. We investigate the phase structure, thermodynamic geometry and critical behavior of a Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole and a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in a cavity, which can reach equilibrium in a canonical ensemble. Although the phase structure and critical behavior of both cases show striking resemblance, we find that there exist significant differences between the thermodynamic geometry of these two cases. Our results imply that there may be a connection between the …
