We present the first direct search for lepton flavour violating muon decay mediated by a new light particle X, $μ^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+\mathrm{X}, \mathrm{X} \to γγ$. This search uses a dataset resulting from $7.5\times 10^{14}$ stopped muons collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009--2013. No significant excess is found in the mass region 20--45 MeV/c$^2$ for lifetimes below 40 ps, and we set the most stringent branching ratio upper limits in the mass region of 20--40 MeV/c$^2$, down to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-11})$ at 90\% confidence level.
The MEG Experiment searches for a lepton flavour violating decay, $μ^+\to\mathrm{e}^+γ$, with a branching-ratio sensitivity of $10^{-13}$ in order to explore the parameter region predicted by many theoretical models beyond the Standard Model. Detector construction and the Engineering Run were completed in 2007, and the first Physics Run will be carried out in 2008. In this paper, the prospects of MEG Physics Run in 2008 is described in addition to the experimental overview.
The MEG II experiment searches for the Charged Lepton Flavour Violating (CLFV) decay $μ\rightarrow e γ$. This decay is foreseen by the Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics at non observable rates through neutrino oscillation. Observing it would be a clear signal of new physics (e.g. SUSY-GUT). After publishing the current upper limit to the Branching Ratio (BR) of this decay in 2016, BR($μ^+\rightarrow e^+ γ)<4.2\times10^{-13}$, the MEG experiment started the upgrade of its detector in order to increase the sensitivity by a factor 10, starting the MEG II phase. The aim of this work is to re…
The final results of the search for the lepton flavour violating decay $μ^{+} \rightarrow {\rm e^{+}} γ$ based on the full dataset collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009--2013 and totalling $7.5\times 10^{14}$ stopped muons on target are presented. No significant excess of events is observed in the dataset with respect to the expected background and a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of $BR( μ^{+} \rightarrow {\rm e^{+}} γ) < 4.2 \times 10^{-13}$ (90\%\ confidence level) is established, which represents the most stringent limit on t…
In light of recent results from the LHC, MEG and neutrino experiments, we revisit the issue of charged lepton flavour violation (LFV) in supersymmetric theories with massive neutrinos, where flavour-violating soft supersymmetry-breaking masses for sleptons are induced naturally by radiative corrections. We link our results to the expectations for neutrino mixing angles in SU(5) enhanced by an abelian flavour symmetry, with particular focus on $θ_{13}$. We focus on the radiative decays $\ell_i \rightarrow \ell_j γ$ and on detection prospects at the LHC and a linear collider (LC). We use supersy…
In minimal anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking models, tachyonic sleptons are avoided by introducing a common scalar mass similar to the one introduced in minimal supergravity. This may lead to non-minimal flavour-violating interactions, e.g., in the squark sector. In this paper, we analyze the viable anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking parameter space in the light of the latest limits on low-energy observables and LHC searches, complete our analytical calculations of flavour-violating supersymmetric particle production at hadron colliders with those related to gluino production, and s…
We present the first results from the MEG experiment for the search of the Lepton Flavour Violating decay $μ^+ \to e^+ γ$ . LFV decays are forbidden in the SM and highly suppressed in any minimal SM extension with tiny neutrino masses. On the other hand, several SUSY, GUT and ED models beyond the SM predict the $μ^+ \to e^+ γ$ rate at a level experimentally accessible. Hence, the MEG experiment will be able either to provide an incontrovertible evidence of physics beyond the SM or to significantly constrain the parameter space of SM extensions.
In these proceedings we review the impact of the tauonic $B$ decays $B\toτν$, $B\to Dτν$ and $B\to D^*τν$ on Higgs mediated flavour violation. For this purpose we study a 2HDM with generic flavour structure (of type III). We find that despite the stringent constraints from FCNC processes sizable effects in tauonic $B$ decays are possible if top-related flavour violation is large and that the tensions with the SM predictions can be resolved even when taking into account the recent CMS bounds on $A^0\toτ^+τ^-$.
In these proceedings we review the flavour phenomenology of two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDMs) and connect the results to the decoupling limit of the MSSM. We first study the impact of FCNC constraints on the allowed parameter space of the 2HDM and examine how recent deviations from the SM expectations in tauonic $B$ decays (observed by BABAR) can be explained in a 2HDM with generic flavour structure (of type III) with sizable flavour violation in the up-sector. Afterwards, we discusses the matching of the MSSM on the 2HDM of type III. Here we focus on the two-loop SQCD corrections to the Higgs-…
The $e^+p$-data collected with the ZEUS (${\cal L}=47.7$ pb$^{-1}$) and the H1 (${\cal L}=37$ pb$^{-1}$) detectors at HERA in 1994--1997 are analysed for signals of lepton flavour violation mediated by leptoquark exchange, both in the muon and the tau channels. No evidence for lepton flavour violation is found and limits on the leptoquarks' Yukawa couplings are set.
The MEG II experiment at Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland will search for the lepton flavour violating muon decay, $μ^+\to e^+γ$, with a sensitivity of $4\times10^{-14}$ improving the existing limit of an order of magnitude. In 2016, we finished the construction of the MEG II Timing Counter, the subdetector dedicated to the measurement of the positron emission time. The first one-fourth of it was installed in the experimental area and we performed a pilot run with the MEG~II beam of $7\times10^{7}μ^+/$s. The timing resolution reached the design value improving by a factor of two compared …
The MEG experiment took data at the Paul Scherrer Institute in the years 2009--2013 to test the violation of the lepton flavour conservation law, which originates from an accidental symmetry that the Standard Model of elementary particle physics has, and published the most stringent limit on the charged lepton flavour violating decay $μ^+ \rightarrow {\rm e}^+ γ$: BR($μ^+ \rightarrow {\rm e}^+ γ$) $<4.2 \times 10^{-13}$ at 90% confidence level. The MEG detector has been upgraded in order to reach a sensitivity of $6\times10^{-14}$. The basic principle of MEG II is to achieve the highest possib…
Charged-lepton flavour-violating (cLFV) processes offer deep probes for new physics with discovery sensitivity to a broad array of new physics models - SUSY, Higgs Doublets, Extra Dimensions, and, particularly, models explaining the neutrino mass hierarchy and the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis. The most sensitive probes of cLFV utilize high-intensity muon beams to search for $μ\rightarrow e$ transitions. We summarize the status of muon-cLFV experiments currently under construction at PSI, Fermilab, and J-PARC. These experiments offer sensitivity to effective new …
This article presents the MEG II Cylindrical Drift CHamber (CDCH), a key detector for the phase 2 of MEG, which aims at reaching a sensitivity level of the order of $6 \times 10^{-14}$ for the charged Lepton Flavour Violating $μ^+ \rightarrow \mbox{e}^+ γ$ decay. CDCH is designed to overcome the limitations of the MEG $\mbox{e}^+$ tracker and guarantee the proper operation at high rates with long-term detector stability. CDCH is a low-mass unique volume detector with high granularity: 9 layers of 192 drift cells, few mm wide, defined by $\approx 12000$ wires in a stereo configuration for longi…
We study implications of recent data on neutrino mixing from T2K, MINOS, Double Chooz and $μ\to e γ$ from MEG for the Zee model. The simplest version of this model has been shown to be ruled out by experimental data some time ago. The general Zee model is still consistent with recent data. We demonstrate this with a constrained Zee model based on naturalness consideration. In this constrained model, only inverted mass hierarchy for neutrino masses is allowed, and $θ_{13}$ must be non-zero in order to have correct ratio for neutrino mass-squared differences and for mixing in solar and atmospher…
Charged lepton flavour violating transitions would be a clear signal of new physics beyond the Standard Model. Their search has been carried out in a variety of channels, the most sensitive being those involving a muon: however no positive evidence has been found so far. The MEG experiment has recently set the best limit on such processes by investigating the existence of the $μ\to eγ$ decay. In the next decade several experiments are planned to pursue the search for $μ\to eγ$, $μ\to eee$, $μ\to e$ conversion in nuclei, as well as on processes involving the $τ$, to an unprecedented level of pr…
We consider scenarios with a heavy $Z^\prime$ gauge boson with flavour non-universal quark and lepton couplings with the goal to illustrate how the cancellation of gauge anomalies generated by the additional U(1)$^\prime$ gauge symmetry would imply correlations between FCNC processes in the quark sector, in the lepton sector and most interestingly between quark flavour and lepton flavour violating processes. We present scenarios with only left-handed flavour-violating $Z^\prime$ couplings and those with also right-handed flavour-violating couplings. These are characterized by a small number of…
We demonstrate that flavour-changing neutral currents in the top sector, mediated by leptophilic scalars at the electroweak scale, can easily arise in scenarios of new physics, and in particular in composite Higgs models. We moreover show that such interactions are poorly constrained by current experiments, while they can be searched for at the LHC in rare top decays and, more generally, in the channels $pp\to tS(S)+j$, with $S\to\ell^+\ell^-$. We provide dedicated analyses in this respect, obtaining that cut-off scales as large as $Λ\sim$ 90 TeV can be probed with an integrated luminosity of …
Recent results of searches for leptoquarks, lepton flavour violating leptoquarks and excited fermions (electrons, neutrinos and quarks) with the H1 experiment at HERA are presented, which use up to the full ep H1 data set. No evidence for the direct or indirect production of such particles is found. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the Yukawa coupling of leptoquarks and lepton flavour violating processes and for excited fermions on the ratio of the coupling parameter to the compositeness scale f/Lambda, mainly in the framework of gauge mediated interactions. The derived limits…
The coming flavour precision era will allow to uncover various patterns of flavour violation in different New Physics scenarios. We discuss different classes of them. A simple extension of the Standard Model that generally introduces new sources of flavour and CP violation as well as right-handed currents is the addition of a U(1) gauge symmetry to the SM gauge group. In such Z' models correlations between various flavour observables emerge that could test and distinguish different Z' scenarios. A concrete model with flavour violating Z' couplings is the 331 model based on the gauge group SU(3…
The MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) represents the state of the art in the search for the charged Lepton Flavour Violating (cLFV) $μ^+ \rightarrow e^+ γ$ decay. With the phase 1, MEG set the new world best upper limit on the $\mbox{BR}(μ^+ \rightarrow e^+ γ) < 4.2 \times 10^{-13}$ (90% C.L.). With the phase 2, MEG II, the experiment aims at reaching a sensitivity enhancement of about one order of magnitude compared to the previous MEG result. The new Cylindrical Drift CHamber (CDCH) is a key detector for MEG II. CDCH is a low-mass single volume detector with high granularity…
The results of a search for pair production of the lighter scalar partners of top quarks in 2.05 fb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt(s) =7 TeV using the ATLAS experiment at the LHC are reported. Scalar top quarks are searched for in events with two same flavour opposite-sign leptons (electrons or muons) with invariant mass consistent with the Z boson mass, large missing transverse momentum and jets in the final state. At least one of the jets is identified as originating from a b-quark. No excess over Standard Model expectations is found. The results are interpreted in the framework of R-parity cons…

Right-handed neutrinos with MeV to GeV mass are very promising candidates for dark matter (DM). Not only can they solve the missing satellite puzzle, the cusp-core problem of inner DM density profiles, and the too-big-to fail problem, {\it i.e.} that the unobserved satellites are too big to not have visible stars, but they can also account for the Standard Model (SM) neutrino masses at one loop. We perform a comprehensive study of the right-handed neutrino parameter space and impose the correct observed relic density and SM neutrino mass differences and mixings. We find that the DM masses are …
In many extensions of the Standard Model flavour changing neutral current processes can be mediated by tree-level heavy neutral scalars and/or pseudo-scalars H^0(A^0). This generally introduces new sources of flavour violation and CP violation as well as left-handed and right-handed scalar currents. These new physics contributions imply a pattern of deviations from SM expectations for FCNC processes that depends only on the couplings of H^0(A^0) to fermions and on their masses. In situations in which a single H^0 or A^0 dominates NP contributions stringent correlations between Delta F=2 and De…
We present a new result based on an analysis of the data collected by the MEG detector at the Paul Scherrer Institut in 2009 and 2010, in search of the lepton flavour violating decay mu->e gamma. The likelihood analysis of the combined data sample, which corresponds to a total of 1.8 x 10**14 muon decays, gives a 90% C.L. upper limit of 2.4 x 10**-12 on the branching ratio of the mu->e gamma decay, constituting the most stringent limit on the existence of this decay to date.
The MEG experiment makes use of one of the world's most intense low energy muon beams, in order to search for the lepton flavour violating process $μ^{+} \rightarrow {\rm e}^{+} γ$. We determined the residual beam polarization at the thin stopping target, by measuring the asymmetry of the angular distribution of Michel decay positrons as a function of energy. The initial muon beam polarization at the production is predicted to be $P_μ = -1$ by the Standard Model (SM) with massless neutrinos. We estimated our residual muon polarization to be $P_μ = -0.85 \pm 0.03 ~ {\rm (stat)} ~ { }^{+ 0.04}_{…
We present the first detailed computation of the conversion of a bound muon into an electron mediated by a doubly charged $SU(2)$ singlet scalar. Although such particles are not too exotic, up to now their contribution to $μ$-$e$ conversion is unknown. We close this gap by presenting a detailed calculation, which will allow the reader not only to fully comprehend the discussion but also to generalise our results to similar cases if needed. We furthermore compare the predictions, for both the general case and for an example model featuring a neutrino mass at 2-loop level, to current experimenta…
We consider gq -> Zt, gq -> gamma t and gq -> t production (q=u,c) mediated by strong flavour-changing neutral interactions within an effective operator framework. We provide total cross sections for Tevatron and LHC, showing explicitly that the six processes can be described in full generality in terms of only two parameters (anomalous couplings) for q=u plus two for q=c. In our work we take into account and study in detail the effects of top quark decay. For gamma t, the inclusion of the top quark decay in the matrix element reveals an striking result: the largest contribution to the final s…
The branching ratio of the rare decay B->X_s gamma provides potentially strong constraints on models beyond the Standard Model. Considering a general scenario with new heavy neutral gauge bosons, present in particular in Z' and gauge flavour models, we point out two new contributions to the B->X_s gamma decay. The first one originates from one-loop diagrams mediated by gauge bosons and heavy exotic quarks with electric charge -1/3. The second contribution stems from the QCD mixing of neutral current-current operators generated by heavy neutral gauge bosons and the dipole operators responsible …
We propose the continuation of the MEG experiment to search for the charged lepton flavour violating decay (cLFV) μ\to e γ, based on an upgrade of the experiment, which aims for a sensitivity enhancement of one order of magnitude compared to the final MEG result, down to the $6 \times 10^{-14}$ level. The key features of this new MEG upgrade are an increased rate capability of all detectors to enable running at the intensity frontier and improved energy, angular and timing resolutions, for both the positron and photon arms of the detector. On the positron-side a new low-mass, single volume, hi…
The data collected by the DELPHI experiment up to the highest LEP2 energies were used to put constraints on the Anomaly Mediated SUSY Breaking model with a flavour independent m0 parameter. The experimental searches covered several possible signatures experimentally accessible at LEP, with either the lightest neutralino, the sneutrino or the stau being the LSP. They included the search for nearly mass degenerate chargino and neutralino (always present in AMSB), the search for Standard Model like or invisible Higgs boson, the search for stable staus, and the search for cascade decays resulting …
We outline a systematic strategy which should help in this decade to identify New Physics beyond the Standard Model by means of quark flavour violating processes and thereby to extend the picture of short distance physics down to the scales as short as 10^{-20} m and even shorter distance scales corresponding to energies of 100 TeV. Rather then using all possible flavour violating observables that will be measured in the coming years, we concentrate on those observables that are theoretically clean and very sensitive to NP. Assuming that the data on the selected observables by us will be very …
The analysis of a combined data set, totaling 3.6 \times 10^14 stopped muons on target, in the search for the lepton flavour violating decay mu^+ -> e^+ gamma is presented. The data collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut show no excess of events compared to background expectations and yield a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of 5.7 \times 10^-13 (90% confidence level). This represents a four times more stringent limit than the previous world best limit set by MEG.
We present a general purpose, parton-level Monte Carlo program for the calculation of the radiative ($L\toν\barνl+γ$) and rare ($L\toν\barνl'+ l^+l^-$) muon and tau decays at NLO in the effective Fermi theory. In the case of muon, these processes are irreducible Standard Model backgrounds to searches for lepton flavour violation at the PSI experiments MEG and Mu3e as they become indistinguishable from the corresponding signals when the neutrinos carry little energy. Furthermore, we argue that fully differential NLO corrections are very important for the analysis of measurements aiming at the p…
