The MEG Experiment searches for a lepton flavour violating decay, $μ^+\to\mathrm{e}^+γ$, with a branching-ratio sensitivity of $10^{-13}$ in order to explore the parameter region predicted by many theoretical models beyond the Standard Model. Detector construction and the Engineering Run were completed in 2007, and the first Physics Run will be carried out in 2008. In this paper, the prospects of MEG Physics Run in 2008 is described in addition to the experimental overview.
Searches for lepton flavour violating $τ$ $\ra$ lll and $τ$ $\ra$ l$γ$ decays at the B-factories are presented. Upper limits on the branching ratios are obtained $\sim$ $O(10^{-7})$ at 90% confidence level.
The MEG II experiment searches for the Charged Lepton Flavour Violating (CLFV) decay $μ\rightarrow e γ$. This decay is foreseen by the Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics at non observable rates through neutrino oscillation. Observing it would be a clear signal of new physics (e.g. SUSY-GUT). After publishing the current upper limit to the Branching Ratio (BR) of this decay in 2016, BR($μ^+\rightarrow e^+ γ)<4.2\times10^{-13}$, the MEG experiment started the upgrade of its detector in order to increase the sensitivity by a factor 10, starting the MEG II phase. The aim of this work is to re…
The final results of the search for the lepton flavour violating decay $μ^{+} \rightarrow {\rm e^{+}} γ$ based on the full dataset collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009--2013 and totalling $7.5\times 10^{14}$ stopped muons on target are presented. No significant excess of events is observed in the dataset with respect to the expected background and a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of $BR( μ^{+} \rightarrow {\rm e^{+}} γ) < 4.2 \times 10^{-13}$ (90\%\ confidence level) is established, which represents the most stringent limit on t…
A direct search for lepton flavour violating decays of the Higgs boson (H) in the H to e tau and H to e mu channels is described. The data sample used in the search was collected in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. No evidence is found for lepton flavour violating decays in either final state. Upper limits on the branching fractions, B(H to e tau ) < 0.69% and B(H to e mu) < 0.035%, are set at the 95% confidence level. The constraint set on B(H to e tau) is an order of magnitude …
We present the first direct search for lepton flavour violating muon decay mediated by a new light particle X, $μ^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+\mathrm{X}, \mathrm{X} \to γγ$. This search uses a dataset resulting from $7.5\times 10^{14}$ stopped muons collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009--2013. No significant excess is found in the mass region 20--45 MeV/c$^2$ for lifetimes below 40 ps, and we set the most stringent branching ratio upper limits in the mass region of 20--40 MeV/c$^2$, down to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-11})$ at 90\% confidence level.
In light of recent results from the LHC, MEG and neutrino experiments, we revisit the issue of charged lepton flavour violation (LFV) in supersymmetric theories with massive neutrinos, where flavour-violating soft supersymmetry-breaking masses for sleptons are induced naturally by radiative corrections. We link our results to the expectations for neutrino mixing angles in SU(5) enhanced by an abelian flavour symmetry, with particular focus on $θ_{13}$. We focus on the radiative decays $\ell_i \rightarrow \ell_j γ$ and on detection prospects at the LHC and a linear collider (LC). We use supersy…
In the Standard Model of particle physics, lepton flavour and lepton number are conserved quantities although no fundamental symmetry demands their conservation. I present recent results of searches for lepton flavour and lepton number violating hadron decays measured at the B factories and LHCb. In addition, the LHCb collaboration has recently performed a search for the lepton flavour violating decay τ^- \to μ^-μ^-μ^+. The obtained upper exclusion limit, that has been presented in this talk for the first time, is of the same order of magnitude as those observed at the B factories. This is the…
This Letter presents direct searches for lepton flavour violation in Higgs boson decays, $H\rightarrow eτ$ and $H\rightarrowμτ$, performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The searches are based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $36.1\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. No significant excess is observed above the expected background from Standard Model processes. The observed (median expected) 95 % confidence-level upper limits on the lepton-flavour-violating branching ratios are $0.47\%$ ($0.34^{+0.13}_…
Since the discovery of neutrino oscillations it is known that lepton flavour is not conserved. Lepton flavour violating processes in the charged lepton sector have so far however eluded detection; as they are heavily suppressed in the standard model of particle physics, an observation would be a clear signal for new physics and help to understand the source of neutrino masses and CP violation. We propose a novel experiment searching for the decay mu -> eee with the aim of ultimately reaching a sensitivity of 10^-16, an improvement by four orders of magnitude compared to previous experiments. T…
A search for the lepton flavour violating decays $τ^- \to l^- K^0_{\scriptscriptstyle S}$ ($l = e$ or $μ$) has been performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 469 ${fb}^{-1}$, collected with the {\slshape B\kern-0.1em{\smaller A}\kern-0.1em B\kern-0.1em{\smaller A\kern-0.2em R}} detector at the SLAC PEP-II $e^+e^-$ asymmetric energy collider. No statistically significant signal has been observed in either channel and the estimated upper limits on branching fractions are ${\cal B}(τ^- \to e^- K^0_{\scriptscriptstyle S}) < 3.3 \times 10^{-8}$ and ${\cal B}(τ^- \to…
Direct searches for lepton flavour violation in decays of the Higgs and $Z$ bosons with the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. The following three decays are considered: $H\to eτ$, $H\toμτ$, and $Z\toμτ$. The searches are based on the data sample of proton--proton collisions collected by the ATLAS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV. No significant excess is observed, and upper limits on the lepton-flavour-violating branching ratios are set at the 95% confidence level: Br$(H\to eτ) <$ 1.04%, Br$(H\toμτ) <$ …

The search is based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector in 2016, at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant excess over the standard model expectation is observed. The observed (expected) upper limits on the lepton flavour violating branching fractions of the Higgs boson are $\mathcal{B}$(H$\toμτ$) < 0.25% (0.25%) and $\mathcal{B}$(H$\to$e$τ$) < 0.61% (0.37%), at 95% confidence …
Recent hints for lepton-universality violation in $b\to c\ellν$ and $b\to s\ell\ell$ transitions could imply the existence of lepton-flavour violating $b$ decays. The LHCb experiment is well suited for the search for these decays due to its large acceptance and trigger efficiency, as well as its excellent invariant mass resolution and particle identification capabilities. Recent results on searches for lepton-flavour violating decays from the LHCb experiment are presented.
A direct search for lepton-flavour-violating (LFV) $H\toμτ$ decays of the recently discovered Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The analysis is performed in the $H\toμτ_{\mathrm{had}}$ channel, where $τ_{\mathrm{had}}$ is a hadronically decaying $τ$-lepton. The search is based on the data sample of proton--proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. No statistically significant excess of data over the predicted background is observed. The observed (expe…
The CP violating asymmetry asl is studied with a sample of Bs0 or Bs0bar semi-muonic decays in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at LHCb with an integrated luminosity of 1 fb^-1. The final state studied is Dsμ, with Ds reconstructed in the final state ϕπ. The Dsμ yields are summed over untagged Bs0 and Bs0bar initial states, and integrated with respect to decay time. Data driven methods have been developed to measure all the efficiency ratios needed to determine asl from the measured raw asymmetry. We obtain asl= (-0.24+/-0.54+/-0.33)%, where the first uncertainty is…
The possibility to discriminate between different operators contributing to lepton flavour violating tau decays is discussed within an effective field theory framework. Correlations among decay rates in different channels as well as differential distributions in many-body decays are considered. Recent developments in the determination of the hadronic form factors for $τ\rightarrow \ell ππ$ ($\ell = e, μ$) decays are incorporated in the analysis. The above issues are exemplified by considering a Higgs-like boson with lepton flavour violating couplings. Implications of the search for lepton flav…
We present the first results from the MEG experiment for the search of the Lepton Flavour Violating decay $μ^+ \to e^+ γ$ . LFV decays are forbidden in the SM and highly suppressed in any minimal SM extension with tiny neutrino masses. On the other hand, several SUSY, GUT and ED models beyond the SM predict the $μ^+ \to e^+ γ$ rate at a level experimentally accessible. Hence, the MEG experiment will be able either to provide an incontrovertible evidence of physics beyond the SM or to significantly constrain the parameter space of SM extensions.
A search for lepton flavour violating decays of a neutral non-standard-model Higgs boson in the $μτ$ and e$τ$ decay modes is presented. The search is based on proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The $τ$ leptons are reconstructed in the leptonic and hadronic decay modes. No signal is observed in the mass range 200-900 GeV. At 95% confidence level, the observed (expected) upper limits on the production cross section multiplied by the branching fraction vary fr…
The first direct search for lepton-flavour-violating decays of the recently discovered Higgs boson (H) is described. The search is performed in the H to mu tau[e] and H to mu tau[h] channels, where tau[e] and tau[h] are tau leptons reconstructed in the electronic and hadronic decay channels, respectively. The data sample used in this search was collected in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 8 TeV with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. The sensitivity of the search is an order of magnitude better than t…
Flavour-violating Higgs interactions are suppressed in the Standard Model such that their observation would be a clear sign of new physics. We investigate the prospects for detecting quark flavour-violating Higgs decays in the clean ILC environment. Concentrating on the decay to a bottom and a light quark $j$, we identify the dominant Standard Model background channels as coming from hadronic Standard Model Higgs decays with mis-identified jets. Therefore, good flavour tagging capabilities are essential to keep the background rate under control. Through a simple cut-based analysis, we find tha…
I review some of the highlights of results from non-hadron collider flavor experiments shown at the EPS conference in the summer of 2009. These include highlights of the latest results from the BaBar and Belle B-factories, CLEO-c, BES-III, NA48, KTeV, KLOE, NA62, MEG, and mu to e conversion experiments.
The observation of charged lepton flavour violation would be a smoking gun for new physics and could help in pinpointing the mechanism at the origin of neutrino masses and mixing. We present here our recent studies of lepton flavour violating Higgs decays in the inverse seesaw and its supersymmetric embedding, two examples of low-scale seesaw mechanisms. We predict branching ratios as large as $10^{-5}$ for the decays $h\rightarrow τμ$ and $h \rightarrow τe$ in the inverse seesaw, which can be probed in future colliders. Supersymmetric contributions can enhance the branching ratio of $h\righta…
Run-I results from the CMS collaboration show an excess of events in the decay $h \to μτ_e$ with a local significances of 2.4$σ$. This could be the first hint of flavour violation in the Higgs sector. We summarise the bounds on the flavour violating Yukawa couplings from direct searches, low energy measurements and projected future experiments. We discuss the sensitivity of upcoming HL-LHC runs and future lepton colliders in measuring lepton-flavour violating couplings using an effective field theory framework. For the HL-LHC we find limits on BR($h\to μτ$) and BR$(h\to e τ) \lesssim \mathcal{…
A search for the lepton number violating $K^{+}\rightarrowπ^{-}μ^{+}e^{+}$ and lepton flavour violating $K^{+}\rightarrowπ^{+}μ^{-}e^{+}$ decays is reported using NA62 data collected in 2017 and 2018. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation and therefore upper limits are established on the branching ratios at $90\%$ confidence level: $\mathcal{B}(K^{+}\rightarrowπ^{-}μ^{+}e^{+})<4.2\times10^{-11}$ and $\mathcal{B}(K^{+}\rightarrowπ^{+}μ^{-}e^{+})<6.6\times10^{-11}$. These results improve over the previous limits by factors of $12$ and $8$ respectively.
We estimate that the LHC could set bounds BR(Z -> mu^\pm e^\mp) < 4.1 * 10^{-7} and BR(Z -> tau^\pm mu^\mp)< 3.5 * 10^{-6} (at 95% C.L.) with 20 inverse fb of data at 8 TeV. A similar sensitivity can be anticipated for Z -> tau^\pm e^\mp, because we consider leptonic tau decays such that Z -> tau^+ mu^- gives e^+ μ^- +$ invisibles. These limits can be compared to the LEP1 bounds of order 10^{-5} to 10^{-6}. Such collider searches are sensitive to a flavour-changing effective Z coupling which is energy dependent, so are complementary to bounds obtained from tau to 3mu and mu to 3e.
Flavour-violating interactions of the stop-quarks are expected to provide an additional few GeV contributions to the Higgs-Boson mass, particularly when mix with scharm-quarks, thereby allowing reduced supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking scale compared to flavour-conserving constrained minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM). Inspired by this, we analyse the interactions mentioned above in the context of CMSSM using the information entropy of the Higgs-Boson for a wider region of flavour-violating CMSSM parameter space $(m_0,m_{1/2},A_0,$ $\tanβ,sgn(μ),δ_{ct}^{ij})$, where $δ_{ct}^{ij}$ repres…
We study the effects of squark generation mixing on squark and gluino production and decays at LHC in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with focus on the mixing between second and third generation squarks. Taking into account the constraints from B-physics experiments we show that various regions in parameter space exist where decays of squarks and/or gluinos into quark flavour violating (QFV) final states can have large branching ratios. Here we consider both fermionic and bosonic decays of squarks. Rates of the corresponding QFV signals, e.g. pp -> t t bar{c} bar{c} missing-E_…
Leptoquarks are ubiquitous in several extensions of the Standard Model and seem to be able to accommodate the universality-violation-driven $B$-meson-decay anomalies and the $(g-2)_μ$ discrepancy interpreted as deviations from the Standard Model predictions. In addition, the search for lepton-flavour violation in the charged sector is, at present, a major research program that could also be facilitated by the dynamics generated by leptoquarks. In this article, we consider a rather wide framework of both scalar and vector leptoquarks as the generators of lepton-flavour violation in processes in…
We assess the status of past and future experiments on lepton flavor violating (LFV) muon and tau decays into a light, invisible, axion-like particle (ALP), $a$. We propose a new experimental setup for MEG II, the MEGII-fwd, with a forward calorimeter placed downstream from the muon stopping target. Searching for $μ\to e a$ decays MEGII-fwd is maximally sensitive to LFV ALPs, if these have nonzero couplings to right-handed leptons. The experimental set-up suppresses the (left-handed) Standard Model background in the forward direction by controlling the polarization purity of the muon beam. The…
The coming flavour precision era will allow to uncover various patterns of flavour violation in different New Physics scenarios. We discuss different classes of them. A simple extension of the Standard Model that generally introduces new sources of flavour and CP violation as well as right-handed currents is the addition of a U(1) gauge symmetry to the SM gauge group. In such Z' models correlations between various flavour observables emerge that could test and distinguish different Z' scenarios. A concrete model with flavour violating Z' couplings is the 331 model based on the gauge group SU(3…
We investigate the predictions for lepton flavour number violating processes in the context of a simple left-right symmetric theory. In this context neutrinos are Majorana fermions and their masses are generated at the quantum level through the Zee mechanism using the simplest Higgs sector. We show that the right handed neutrinos are generically light and can give rise to large lepton number violating contributions to rare processes. We discuss the correlation between the collider constrains and the predictions for lepton number violating processes. We find that using the predictions for mu to…
Quark flavour conserving (QFC) fermionic squark decays, such as ~t_{1,2} -> t neutralino_i, are usually assumed in squark search analyses. Here we study quark flavour violating (QFV) bosonic squark decays, such as ~u_2 -> ~u_1 h^0/Z^0, where the mass eigenstates ~u_{1,2} are mixtures of scharm and stop quarks. We show that the branching ratios of such QFV decays can be very large due to sizable ~c_R - ~t_{R/L} and ~t_R - ~t_L mixing effects despite the very strong constraints on the QFV parameters from B meson data. This can result in remarkable QFV signatures with significant rates at LHC (14…
In this letter we propose a strategy for discerning if new physics in the Wilson coefficient ${\cal C}_{9μ}$ is dominantly lepton flavour universality violating or if it contains a sizable lepton flavour universal component (${\cal C}_9^{\rm U}$). Distinguishing among these two cases, for which the model independent fit of the related scenarios exhibits similar pulls w.r.t. the Standard Model, is crucial to advance our understanding of the $B$ anomalies. We first identify the origin of the degeneracy of these two cases and point out the key observables that can break it. In particular, while t…
Flavour physics plays a crucial role in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). While $B$ physics offers many observables to look for deviations from the SM, the highest new physics sensitivity can be obtained in the rare kaon decays $K\toπν\barν$. Of particular interest are correlations between various flavour violating observables that allow to test the symmetries and the operator structure of the new physics flavour sector. New physics searches in rare meson decays are complemented by searches for new flavour violating interactions in the production and decay of new particles…
We outline a systematic strategy which should help in this decade to identify New Physics beyond the Standard Model by means of quark flavour violating processes and thereby to extend the picture of short distance physics down to the scales as short as 10^{-20} m and even shorter distance scales corresponding to energies of 100 TeV. Rather then using all possible flavour violating observables that will be measured in the coming years, we concentrate on those observables that are theoretically clean and very sensitive to NP. Assuming that the data on the selected observables by us will be very …
We present an extensive study of non-minimal flavour violation in the squark sector in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We investigate the effects of multiple non-vanishing flavour-violating elements in the squark mass matrices by means of a Markov Chain Monte Carlo scanning technique and identify parameter combinations that are favoured by both current data and theoretical constraints. We then detail the resulting distributions of the flavour-conserving and flavour-violating model parameters. Based on this analysis, we propose a set of benchmark scenarios relevant f…
In minimal anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking models, tachyonic sleptons are avoided by introducing a common scalar mass similar to the one introduced in minimal supergravity. This may lead to non-minimal flavour-violating interactions, e.g., in the squark sector. In this paper, we analyze the viable anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking parameter space in the light of the latest limits on low-energy observables and LHC searches, complete our analytical calculations of flavour-violating supersymmetric particle production at hadron colliders with those related to gluino production, and s…
Within an effective-field-theory framework, we present a model-independent analysis of the potential of discovering new physics by searching for lepton flavour violation in heavy quarkonium decays and, more in general, we study the phenomenology of lepton-flavour-violating (LFV) 2 quark - 2 lepton ($2q2\ell$) operators with two charm or bottom fields. We compute the constraints from LFV muon and tau decays on the new-physics operators that can induce LFV processes involving $c\bar c$ and $b\bar b$ systems, thus providing a comprehensive list of indirect upper limits on processes such as $J/ψ\t…
LHCb has reported deviations from the Standard Model in $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ transitions for which a new neutral gauge boson is a prime candidate for an explanation. As this gauge boson has to couple in a flavour non-universal way to muons and electrons in order to explain $R_K$, it is interesting to examine the possibility that also lepton flavour is violated, especially in the light of the CMS excess in $h\toτ^\pmμ^\mp$. In this article, we investigate the perspectives to discover the lepton-flavour violating modes $B\to K^{(*)}τ^\pmμ^\mp$, $B_s\to τ^\pmμ^\mp$ and $B\to K^{(*)} μ^\pm e^\mp$, $B_s\…
We calculate the decay of $τ^-\toπ^-γν_τ$ in the framework of Resonance Chiral Theory ($RχT$). By demanding the high energy constraints from QCD on the related form factors, we could predict the various physical observables of $τ^-\toπ^-γν_τ$ without any free parameter. Our results show that for a realistic cut on the photon energy (around $100$ MeV) this mode gives a branching ratio of roughly $0.1%$ that should have already been detected at the heavy-flavour factories. Another interesting subject we have studied based on our calculation of the decay $τ^-\toπ^-γν_τ$ is the experimental backgr…
We consider the leptonic and semileptonic (SL) lepton flavour violating (LFV) decays of the charged leptons in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). The formalism for evaluation of branching fractions for the SL LFV charged-lepton decays with one or two pseudoscalar mesons, or one vector meson in the final state, is given. Previous amplitudes for the SL LFV charged-lepton decays in MSSM are improved, for instance the $γ$-penguin amplitude is corrected to assure the gauge invariance. The decays are studied not only in the model-independent formulation of the theory in the frame of M…
The MEG II experiment at Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland will search for the lepton flavour violating muon decay, $μ^+\to e^+γ$, with a sensitivity of $4\times10^{-14}$ improving the existing limit of an order of magnitude. In 2016, we finished the construction of the MEG II Timing Counter, the subdetector dedicated to the measurement of the positron emission time. The first one-fourth of it was installed in the experimental area and we performed a pilot run with the MEG~II beam of $7\times10^{7}μ^+/$s. The timing resolution reached the design value improving by a factor of two compared …
We present a new result based on an analysis of the data collected by the MEG detector at the Paul Scherrer Institut in 2009 and 2010, in search of the lepton flavour violating decay mu->e gamma. The likelihood analysis of the combined data sample, which corresponds to a total of 1.8 x 10**14 muon decays, gives a 90% C.L. upper limit of 2.4 x 10**-12 on the branching ratio of the mu->e gamma decay, constituting the most stringent limit on the existence of this decay to date.
