Ge atoms segregating on zirconium diboride thin films grown on Ge(111) were found to crystallize into a two-dimensional bitriangular structure which was recently predicted to be a flat band material. Angle-resolved photoemission experiments together with theoretical calculations verified the existence of a nearly flat band in spite of non-negligible in-plane long-range hopping and interactions with the substrate. This provides the first experimental evidence that a flat band can emerge from the electronic coupling between atoms and not from the geometry of the atomic structure.
The topological kagome magnet (TKM) Fe3Sn2 exhibits unusual topological properties, flat electronic bands, and chiral spin textures, making it an exquisite materials platform to explore the interplay between topological band structure, strong electron correlations, and magnetism. Here we report the first synthesis of high-quality epitaxial (0001) Fe3Sn2 films with large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect close to that measured in bulk single crystals. In addition, we measured a large, anisotropic anomalous Nernst coefficient Syx of 1.26 μV/K, roughly 2-5x greater than that of common ferromagnets,…
Mn$_3$Sn is a non-collinear antiferromagnetic quantum material that exhibits a magnetic Weyl semimetallic state and has great potential for efficient memory devices. High-quality epitaxial $c$-plane Mn$_3$Sn thin films have been grown on a sapphire substrate using a Ru seed layer. Using spin pumping induced inverse spin Hall effect measurements on $c$-plane epitaxial Mn$_3$Sn/Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$, we measure spin-diffusion length ($λ_{\rm Mn_3Sn}$), and spin Hall conductivity ($σ_{\rm{SH}}$) of Mn$_3$Sn thin films: $λ_{\rm Mn_3Sn}=0.42\pm 0.04$ nm and $σ_{\rm{SH}}=-702~\hbar/ e~Ω^{-1}$cm$^{-1}$.…
Antiferromagnetic manganese-based nitride antiperovskites, such as Mn$_3$NiN, hold a triangular frustrated magnetic ordering over their kagome lattice formed by the Mn atoms along the (111)-plane. As such, frustration imposes a non-trivial interplay between the symmetric and asymmetric magnetic interactions, which can only reach equilibrium in a noncollinear magnetic configuration. Consequently, the associated electronic interactions and their possible tuning by external constraints, such as applied epitaxial strain, play a crucial role in defining the microscopic and macroscopic properties of…
In the context of the $S=1$ kagome antiferromagnet Na$_2$Ti$_3$Cl$_8$, we respond to the comment by Khomskii et al. [D.I. Khomskii, T. Mizokawa and S.V. Streltsov, Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 049701 (2021)] on previous work by Paul et al. [A. Paul, C.-M. Chung, T. Birol, and H. J. Changlani, Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 167203 (2020)].
Spin-1 antiferromagnets are abundant in nature, but few theories or results exist to understand their general properties and behavior, particularly in situations when geometric frustration is present. Here we study the $S=1$ Kagome compound Na$_2$Ti$_3$Cl$_8$ using a combination of Density Functional Theory, Exact Diagonalization, and Density Matrix Renormalization Group methods to achieve a first principles supported explanation of exotic magnetic phases in this compound. We find that the effective magnetic Hamiltonian includes essential non-Heisenberg terms that do not stem from spin-orbit c…
We report on the fabrication of high quality (1 1 1)-oriented ferrimagnetic normal spinel CoCr2O4 epitaxial thin films on single crystal Al2O3 substrates. The structural, electronic and magnetic properties were characterized by in-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry and element resolved resonant X-ray magnetic scattering. The comprehensive characterization reveals that no disorder in the cation distribution or multivalency issue is present in the samples. As a result, Kagome and trian…
Frustrated one-dimensional quantum spin systems are known to exhibit a variety of quantum ground states due to the effects of quantum fluctuations and frustrations. In a spin-1/2 kagome-strip chain, which is one of the frustrated one-dimensional spin systems, many quantum phases have been found. However, the magnetic phase diagrams of the kagome-strip chain under magnetic field have not been fully understood. We construct magnetic phase diagrams at 0, 1/5, 3/10, 1/3, 2/5, 7/15, 3/5, and 4/5 magnetization ratio in the kagome-strip chain and investigate magnetic properties in each phase using th…
FeSn is a topological semimetal (TSM) and kagome antiferromagnet (AFM) composed of alternating Fe3Sn kagome planes and honeycomb Sn planes. This unique structure gives rise to exotic features in the band structures such as the coexistence of Dirac cones and flatbands near the Fermi level, fully spin-polarized 2D surface Dirac fermions, and the ability to open a large gap in the Dirac cone by reorienting the Néel vector. In this work, we report the synthesis of high quality epitaxial (0001) FeSn films by magnetron sputtering. Using FeSn/Py heterostructures, we show a large exchange bias effect …
The kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet formed by frustrated spins arranged in a lattice of corner-sharing triangles is a prime candidate for hosting a quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state consisting of entangled spin singlets. But the existence of various competing states makes a convincing theoretical prediction of the QSL ground state difficult, calling for experimental clues from model materials. The kagome lattice materials Zn-barlowite ZnCu$_{3}$(OD)$_{6}$FBr and herbertsmithite ZnCu$_{3}$(OD)$_{6}$Cl$_2$ do not exhibit long range order, and they are considered the best realizations of t…
Topological kagome systems have been a topic of great interest in condensed matter physics due totheir unique electronic properties. The vanadium-based kagome materials are particularly intrigu-ing since they exhibit exotic phenomena such as charge density wave (CDW) and unconventionalsuperconductivity. The origin of these electronic instabilities is not fully understood, and the re-cent discovery of a charge density wave in ScV6Sn6provides a new avenue for investigation. In thiswork, we investigate the electronic structure of the novel kagome metal ScV6Sn6using angle resolvedphotoemission spe…
Kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets are known to be highly sensitive to perturbations caused by structural disorder. NMR is a local probe ideally suited for investigating such disorder-induced effects, but in practice large distributions in the conventional one-dimensional NMR data make it difficult to distinguish the intrinsic behavior expected for pristine kagome quantum spin liquids from disorder induced effects. Here we report the development of a two-dimensional NMR data acquisition scheme applied to Zn-barlowite (Zn$_{0.95}$Cu$_{0.05}$)Cu$_{3}$(OD)$_{6}$FBr kagome lattice, and suc…
The existence of a spin-liquid ground state of the $s=1/2$ Heisenberg kagome antiferromagnet (KAFM) is well established. Meanwhile, also for the $s=1$ Heisenberg KAFM evidence for the absence of magnetic long-range order (LRO) was found. Magnetic LRO in Heisenberg KAFMs can emerge by increasing the spin quantum number $s$ to $s>1$ and for $s=1$ by an easy-plane anisotropy. In the present paper we discuss the route to magnetic order in $s=1/2$ KAFMs by including an isotropic interlayer coupling (ILC) $J_\perp$ as well as an easy-plane anisotropy in the kagome layers by using the coupled-cluster…
We report on the low-energy dynamics in the kagome antiferromagnet CaCu$_3$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$D$_2$O (Ca-kapellasite) as studied by use of $^2$D-NMR measurements. Previous $^{35}$Cl-NMR measurements revealed that the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) shows two peaks at temperatures, $T^{\ast} = 7.2$ K and $T_s \simeq 25$ K. While the low-temperature peak at $T^{\ast}$ is ascribed to the critical fluctuations near the long-range magnetic ordering, the origin of the high-temperature peak has not been fully understood. From the $1/T_1$ measurements on the D sites at the OD groups …
When quantum fluctuations destroy underlying long-range ordered states, novel quantum states emerge. Spin-liquid (SL) states of frustrated quantum antiferromagnets, in which highly-correlated spins keep to fluctuate down to very low temperatures, are prominent examples of such quantum states. SL states often exhibit exotic physical properties, but the precise nature of the elementary excitations behind such phenomena remains entirely elusive. Here we utilize thermal Hall measurements that can capture the unexplored property of the elementary excitations in SL states, and report on the observat…

A fractionally quantized Berry phase is examined numerically in an anisotropic spin-1/2 XXZ model on the Kagome lattice. It is shown that the Berry phase has a fractionally quantized and non-zero value when an anisotropy is increased, which is consistent with the emergence of the tripartite entangled plaquette phase discussed by J. Carrasquilla et al. [Phys. Rev. B96, 054405 (2017)].
We present numerical evidence for the crystallization of magnons below the saturation field at non-zero temperatures for the highly frustrated spin-half kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. This phenomenon can be traced back to the existence of independent localized magnons or equivalently flat-band multi-magnon states. We present a loop-gas description of these localized magnons and a phase diagram of this transition, thus providing information for which magnetic fields and temperatures magnon crystallization can be observed experimentally. The emergence of a finite-temperature continuous trans…
We use $^{79}$Br nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) to demonstrate that ultra slow lattice dynamics set in below the temperature scale set by the Cu-Cu super-exchange interaction $J$~($\simeq160$~K) in the kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet Zn-barlowite. The lattice completely freezes below 50~K, and $^{79}$Br NQR lineshapes become twice broader due to increased lattice distortions. Moreover, the frozen lattice exhibits an oscillatory component in the transverse spin echo decay, a typical signature of pairing of nuclear spins by indirect nuclear spin-spin interaction. This indicates tha…
Recently, neutron scattering data on powder samples of Zn-paratacamite, Zn$_x$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_6$Cl$_{2}$, with small Zn concentration has been interpreted as evidence for valence bond solid and Néel ordering [1]. We study the classical and quantum Heisenberg models on the distorted kagome lattice appropriate for Zn-paratacamite at low Zn doping. Our theory naturally leads to the emergence of the valence bond solid and collinear magnetic order at zero temperature. Implications of our results to the existing experiments are discussed. We also suggest future inelastic neutron and X-ray scattering…
Determining ground states of correlated electron systems is fundamental to understanding novel phenomena in condensed matter physics. A difficulty, however, arises in a geometrically frustrated system in which the incompatibility between the global topology of an underlying lattice and local spin interactions gives rise to macroscopically degenerate ground states, potentially prompting the emergence of quantum spin states, such as resonating valence bond (RVB) and valence bond solid (VBS). Although theoretically proposed to exist in a kagome lattice -- one of the most highly frustrated lattice…
Realizing a quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state in a real material is a leading issue in condensed matter physics research. In this pursuit, it is crucial to fully characterize the structure and influence of defects, as these can significantly affect the fragile QSL physics. Here, we perform a variety of cutting-edge synchrotron X-ray scattering and spectroscopy techniques, and we advance new methodologies for site-specific diffraction and L-edge Zn absorption spectroscopy. The experimental results along with our first-principles calculations address outstanding questions about the local an…
In this work, topological properties of a ferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a breathing kagome lattice are investigated extensively in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. While the kagome ferromagnet hosts only a single first order topological phase, the breathing kagome system exhibits multiple first and second order topological phases along with their coexistence. Magnon dispersion relation is obtained by using linear spin wave theory. Flat band and Dirac cones are obtained in the absence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. A topological phase diagram is presented where seve…
Kagome lattice offers unique opportunities for the exploration of unusual quantum states of correlated electrons. Here, we report on the observation of superconductivity in a kagome single crystal Pd3P2S8 when a semiconducting to metallic transition is driven by pressure. High-pressure resistance measurements show that the metallization and superconductivity are simultaneously observed at about 11 GPa. With increasing pressure, the superconducting critical temperature Tc is monotonously enhanced from 2.6 K to a maximum 7.7 K at ~52 GPa. Interestingly, superconductivity retains when the pressur…
We present numerical evidence for the emergence of an extended valence bond solid (VBS) phase at $T=0$ in the kagome $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic further-neighbor interactions. The VBS is located at the boundary between two magnetically ordered regions and extends close to the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg point. It exhibits a diamond-like singlet covering pattern with a $12$-site unit-cell. Our results suggest the possibility of a direct, possibly continuous, quantum phase transition from the neighboring $\mathbf{q}=0$ coplanar magnetically ordered phase into the VBS ph…

The kagome lattice of transition metal atoms provides an exciting platform to study electronic correlations in the presence of geometric frustration and nontrivial band topology, which continues to bear surprises. In this work, using spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we discover a cascade of different symmetry-broken electronic states as a function of temperature in a new kagome superconductor, CsV3Sb5. At a temperature far above the superconducting transition Tc ~ 2.5 K, we reveal a tri-directional charge order with a 2a0 period that breaks the translation symmetry of the l…
Quantum magnets on kagome lattice geometries in two and three spatial dimensions are archetypal examples of spin systems in which geometric frustration inhibits conventional magnetic ordering and instead benefits the emergence of long-range entangled spin liquids at low temperature. Here we employ a recently developed pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group (pf-FRG) approach to study the low-temperature quantum magnetism of kagome and hyperkagome spin systems with exchange interactions beyond the nearest neighbor coupling. We find that next-nearest neighbor couplings stabilize a variet…
We report density functional theory calculations for Mo$_3$S$_7$(dmit)$_3$. We derive an ab initio tight-binding model from overlaps of Wannier orbitals; finding a layered model with interlayer hopping terms $\sim3/4$ the size of the in-plane terms. The in-plane Hamiltonian interpolates the kagomé and honeycomb lattices. It supports states localized to dodecahedral rings within the plane, which populate one-dimensional (1D) bands and lead to a quasi-1D spin-one model on a layered honeycomb lattice once interactions are included. Two lines of Dirac cones also cross the Fermi energy.
The entanglement of charge density wave (CDW), superconductivity, and topologically nontrivial electronic structure has recently been discovered in the kagome metal $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) family. With high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study the electronic properties of CDW and superconductivity in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. The spectra around $\bar{K}$ is found to exhibit a peak-dip-hump structure associated with two separate branches of dispersion, demonstrating the isotropic CDW gap opening below $E_{\rm F}$. The peak-dip-hump lineshape is contributed by linearly di…
The classical Ising model on the frustrated 3d swedenborgite lattice has disordered spin liquid ground states for all ratios of inter- and intra-planar couplings. Quantum fluctuations due to a transverse field give rise to several exotic quantum phenomena. In the limit of weakly coupled Kagomé layers we find a 3d version of disorder by disorder. For large out-of-plane couplings 1d macro-spins are formed which realize a disordered macro-spin liquid on an emerging triangular lattice. Signatures of this dimensional reduction are also found in critical exponents of the quantum phase transition out…

Recent experiments on vanadium-based nonmagnetic kagomé metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A=$ K, Rb, Cs) revealed evidence for possible spontaneous time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking in the charge density wave (CDW) ordered state. The long-sought-after quantum order of loop currents has been suggested as a candidate for the TRS breaking state. However, a microscopic model for the emergence of the loop-current CDW due to electronic correlations is still lacking. Here, we calculate the susceptibility of the real and imaginary bond orders on the kagomé lattice near van Hove filling, and reveal the impor…
Motivated by recent experiments in Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$, we demonstrate the emergence of atomic scale Skyrmions in interacting spins on a breathing kagome lattice with competing nearest neighbor ferromagnetic and next nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. In the presence of an applied longitudinal magnetic field, the ground state magnetic order evolves from a helical phase at low fields to a Skyrmion phase at intermediate fields before finally entering a polarized phase at high fields. The size of each Skyrmion spans only two unit cells of the lattice, in contrast to tens …
