We study the gas kinematics of a sample of six isolated gas-rich low surface brightness galaxies, of the class called ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). These galaxies have recently been shown to be outliers from the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR), as they rotate much slower than expected given their baryonic mass, and to have baryon fractions similar to the cosmological mean. By means of a 3D kinematic modelling fitting technique, we show that the HI in our UDGs is distributed in "thin" regularly rotating discs and we determine their rotation velocity and gas velocity dispersion. We revisit the BTFR adding galaxies from other studies. We find a previously unknown trend between the deviation from the BTFR and the disc scale length valid for dwarf galaxies with circular speeds < 45 km/s, with our UDGs being at the extreme end. Based on our findings, we suggest that the high baryon fractions of our UDGs may originate due to the fact that they have experienced weak stellar feedback, likely due to their low star formation rate surface densities, and as a result they did not eject significant amounts of gas out of their discs. At the same time, we find indications that our UDGs may have higher-than-average stellar specific angular momentum, which can explain their large optical scale lengths.
We present new HI interferometric observations of the gas-rich ultra-diffuse galaxy AGC 114905, which previous work, based on low-resolution data, identified as an outlier of the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. The new observations, at a spatial resolution $\sim 2.5$ times higher than before, reveal a regular HI disc rotating at about 23 km/s. Our kinematic parameters, recovered with a robust 3D kinematic modelling fitting technique, show that the flat part of the rotation curve is reached. Intriguingly, the rotation curve can be explained almost entirely by the baryonic mass distribution alon…
The global properties of the interstellar medium with processes such as infall and outflow of gas and a large scale circulation of matter and its consequences for star formation and chemical enrichment are important for the understanding of galaxy evolution. In this paper we studied the kinematics and morphology of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in the disk and in the halo of the star forming spiral galaxy NGC 4666 to derive information about its kinematical properties. Especially, we searched for infalling and outflowing ionized gas. We determined surface brightness, radial velocity, and veloc…
We have obtained data for 41 star forming galaxies in the MUSE Atlas of Disks (MAD) survey with VLT/MUSE. These data allow us, at high resolution of a few 100 pc, to extract ionized gas kinematics ($V, σ$) of the centers of nearby star forming galaxies spanning 3 dex in stellar mass. This paper outlines the methodology for measuring the ionized gas kinematics, which we will use in subsequent papers of this survey. We also show how the maps can be used to study the kinematics of diffuse ionized gas for galaxies of various inclinations and masses. Using two different methods to identify the diff…
Aims. We aim to understand the unexpected presence of mm-wave molecular absorption at -200 \kms $< {\rm v} < -140$ \kms\ in a direction that is well away from regions of the Galactic bulge where CO emission at such velocities is prominent. Methods. We compared 89 GHz Cycle 2 ALMA absorption spectra of \hcop, HCN, and HNC toward the extragalactic continuum source B1741-312 at l=-2.14\degr, b=-1.00\degr\ with existing CO, H I, and dust emission and absorption measurements. We placed the atomic and molecular gas in the bulge and disk using circular and non-circular galactic kinematics, deriving N…
Using visible, radio, microwave, and sub-mm data, we study several lines of sight toward stars generally closer than 1 kpc on a component-by-component basis. We derive the component structure seen in absorption at visible wavelengths from Ca II, Ca I, K I, CH, CH$^{+}\!,$ and CN and compare it to emission from H I, CO and its isotopologues, and C$^{+}$ from the GOT C+ survey. The correspondence between components in emission and absorption help create a more unified picture of diffuse atomic and molecular gas in the interstellar medium. We also discuss how these tracers are related to the CO-d…
In recent years a new window on galaxy evolution opened, thanks to the increasing discovery of galaxies with a low surface brightness, such as Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs). The formation mechanism of these systems is still a much debated question, and so are their kinematical properties. In this work, we address this topic by analyzing the stellar kinematics of isolated UDGs formed in the hydrodynamical simulation suite NIHAO. We construct projected line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion maps to compute the projected specific angular momentum, $λ_{\rm R}$, to characterize the kinemati…
By means of interferometic 21-cm observations and a 3D kinematic modeling technique, we study the gas kinematics of six HI-rich ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). We derive robust circular velocities and baryonic masses, that allow us to study the position of our UDGs with respect to the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR). Somewhat surprisingly, we find that these galaxies are strong outliers from the BTFR, rotating too slowly for their baryonic mass. Moreover, their position in the circular velocity--baryonic mass plane implies that they have a baryon fraction inside their virial radii compati…
With the help of 3D AMR hydrodynamical simulations we aim at understanding G2's nature, recent evolution and fate in the coming years. By exploring the possible parameter space of the diffuse cloud scenario, we find that a starting point within the disc of young stars is favoured by the observations, which may hint at G2 being the result of stellar wind interactions.
We present high resolution FLAMES/VLT spectroscopy of intracluster planetary nebula (ICPN) candidates, targeting three new fields in the Virgo cluster core with surface brightness down to mu_B = 28.5. Based on the projected phase space information we separate the old and 12 newly-confirmed PNs into galaxy and intracluster components. The M87 PNs are confined to the extended stellar envelope of M87, within a projected radius of ~ 160 kpc, while the ICPNs are scattered across the whole surveyed region between M87 and M86. The velocity dispersions determined from the M87 PNs at projected radii of…
Given the absence of directly detected dark matter (DM) as weakly interacting massive particles, there is strong interest in the possibility that DM is an ultra-light scalar field, here denoted as fuzzy DM. Ultra-diffuse galaxies, with the sizes of giant galaxies and the luminosities of dwarf galaxies, have a wide range of DM halo masses, thus providing new opportunities for exploring the connections between galaxies and their DM halos. Following up on new integral field unit spectroscopic observations and dynamics modeling of the DM-dominated ultra-diffuse galaxy Dragonfly 44 in the outskirts…
We study the gas kinematics traced by the 21-cm emission of a sample of six HI$-$rich low surface brightness galaxies classified as ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). Using the 3D kinematic modelling code $\mathrm{^{3D}}$Barolo we derive robust circular velocities, revealing a startling feature: HI$-$rich UDGs are clear outliers from the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation, with circular velocities much lower than galaxies with similar baryonic mass. Notably, the baryon fraction of our UDG sample is consistent with the cosmological value: these UDGs are compatible with having no "missing baryons" withi…
The dominant physical formation mechanism(s) for ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) is still poorly understood. Here, we combine new, deep imaging from the Jeanne Rich Telescope with deep integral field spectroscopy from the Keck II telescope to investigate the formation of UDG1137+16 (dw1137+16). Our new analyses confirm both its environmental association with the low density UGC 6594 group, along with its large size of 3.3 kpc and status as a UDG. The new imaging reveals two distinct stellar components for UDG1137+16, indicating that a central stellar body is surrounded by an outer stellar envelo…
The so-called ultra-diffuse galaxy NGC~1052-DF2 was announced to be a galaxy lacking dark matter based on a spectroscopic study of its constituent globular clusters. Here we present the first spectroscopic analysis of the stellar body of this galaxy using the MUSE integral-field spectrograph at the (ESO) Very Large Telescope. The MUSE datacube simultaneously provides DF2's stellar velocity field and systemic velocities for seven globular clusters (GCs). We further discovered three planetary nebulae (PNe) that are likely part of this galaxy. While five of the clusters had velocities measured in…
We present spatially-resolved stellar kinematics of the well-studied ultra diffuse galaxy (UDG) Dragonfly 44, as determined from 25.3 hrs of observations with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager. The luminosity-weighted dispersion within the half-light radius is $σ_{1/2}=33^{+3}_{-3}$ km/s. There is no evidence for rotation, with $V/σ<0.12$ (90% confidence) along the major axis, in apparent conflict with models where UDGs are the high-spin tail of the normal dwarf galaxy distribution. The spatially-averaged line profile is more peaked than a Gaussian, with Gauss-Hermite coefficient $h_4=0.13\pm 0.05$. …
We investigate the chemical and kinematic properties of the diffuse stellar haloes of six simulated Milky Way-like galaxies from the Aquarius Project. Binding energy criteria are adopted to defined two dynamically distinct stellar populations: the diffuse inner and outer haloes, which comprise different stellar sub-populations with particular chemical and kinematic characteristics. Our simulated inner- and outer-halo stellar populations have received contributions from debris stars (formed in sub-galactic systems while they were outside the virial radius of the main progenitor galaxies) and en…
Here, we present a kinematical analysis of the Virgo cluster ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) VCC 1287 based on data taken with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). We confirm VCC 1287's association both with the Virgo cluster and its globular cluster (GC) system, measuring a recessional velocity of $1116 \pm 2\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$. We measure a stellar velocity dispersion ($19 \pm 6\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$) and infer both a dynamical mass ($1.11^{+0.81}_{-0.81} \times 10^{9} \ \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$) and mass to light ratio ($13^{+11}_{-11}$) within the half light radius (4.4 kpc). This places VCC 1287 s…
We aim to make use of the measurements from the Giraffe Inner Bulge Survey (GIBS) and the Gaia$-$ESO survey (GES) to study the kinematics and distance of the carrier of DIB$\,λ$8620, as well as other properties. We successfully detected and measured DIB$\,λ$8620 in 760 of 4117 GES spectra. Combined with the DIBs measured in GIBS spectra, we confirmed a tight relation between EW and $E(J-K_{\rm S})$ as well as $A_{\rm V}$, with similar fitting coefficients to those found by previous works. With a more accurate sample and the consideration of the solar motion, the rest-frame wavelength of DIB$\,…

NGC1052-DF2 was recently discovered as the dark-matter deficient galaxy claimed by van Dokkum et al. (2018a, vD18). However, large uncertainties on its dynamical mass estimate have been pointed out, concerning the paucity of sample, statistical methods and distance measurements. In this work, we discuss the effects of the difference in modeling of the tracer profile of this galaxy on the dynamical mass estimate. To do this, we assume that the tracer densities are modeled with power-law and Sérsic profiles, and then we solve the spherical Jeans equation to estimate the dynamical mass. Applying …
Ultra-diffuse galaxies that contain a large sample of globular clusters (GCs) offer an opportunity to test the predictions of galactic dynamics theory. NGC5846-UDG1 is an excellent example, with a high-quality sample of dozens of GC candidates. We show that the observed distribution of GCs in NGC5846-UDG1 is suggestive of mass segregation induced by gravitational dynamical friction. We present simple analytic calculations, backed by a series of numerical simulations, that naturally explain the observed present-day pattern of GC masses and radial positions. Subject to some assumptions on the GC…
We present a kinematic analysis of the globular cluster systems and diffuse stellar light of four intermediate luminosity (sub-$L^{\ast}$) early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster based on Gemini/GMOS data. Our galaxy sample is fainter ($-23.8<M_K<-22.7$) than most previous studies, nearly doubling the number of galaxies in this magnitude range that now have GC kinematics. The data for the diffuse light extends to $4R_e$, and the data for the globular clusters reaches 8--$12R_e$. We find that the kinematics in these outer regions are all different despite the fact that these four galaxies have…
We present the first kinematic study of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) in the nearby, face-on disk galaxy M83 using optical emission-line spectroscopy from the Robert Stobie Spectrograph on the Southern African Large Telescope. We use a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to decompose the [NII]$λλ$6548, 6583, H$α$, and [SII]$λλ$6717, 6731 emission lines into HII region and diffuse ionized gas emission. Extraplanar, diffuse gas is distinguished by its emission-line ratios ([NII]$λ$6583/H$α\gtrsim 1.0$) and its rotational velocity lag with respect to the disk ($Δv = -24$ km/s in projection).…
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS). XXXV. First Kinematical Clues of Overly-Massive Dark Matter Halos in Several Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
Nearly all intragroup (IGL) and intracluster light (ICL) comes from stars that are not bound to any single galaxy but were formed in galaxies and later unbound from them. In this review we focus on the physical properties - phase space properties, metallicity and age distribution - of the ICL and IGL components of the groups and clusters in the local universe, within 100 Mpc distance. Kinematic information on these very low surface brightness structures mostly comes from discrete tracers such as planetary nebulae and globular clusters, showing highly unrelaxed velocity distributions. Cosmologi…
We present the discovery of diffuse optical line emission in the Centaurus cluster seen with the MUSE IFU. The unparalleled sensitivity of MUSE allows us to detect the faint emission from these structures which extend well beyond the bounds of the previously known filaments. Diffuse structures (emission surrounding the filaments, a northern shell and an extended Halo) are detected in many lines typical of the nebulae in cluster cores ([NII]$_{λ6548\&6583}$ ,[SII]$_{λ6716\&6731}$, [OI]$_{λ6300}$, [OIII]$_{λ4959\&5007}$ etc.) but are more than an order of magnitude fainter than the filaments, wi…
Looking into the faintEst WIth MUSE (LEWIS): Exploring the nature of ultra-diffuse galaxies in the Hydra-I cluster II. Stellar kinematics and dynamical masses
本研究利用 LEWIS 的 MUSE 积分场光谱测量 Hydra I 星系团 18 个 UDG 的恒星运动学与动力学质量,发现旋转与非旋转两类系统,并揭示其高暗物质占比及环境相关性较弱。
We use optical spectroscopy from VLT/MUSE, as well as photometric observations from HST and VLT/HAWK-I, to study the morpho-kinematics of 17 low mass MACS J0416.1-2403 cluster galaxies at R200 and 5 field galaxies with a redshift of z~0.4. By measuring fluxes of emission lines, we have recovered the star formation rates, gas-phase metallicities and the spatially resolved gas kinematics. We have analysed the structure and morphology of the galaxies from the photometric data, performing a multi-component decomposition into a bulge and a disk. The spatially resolved gas velocity fields were model…
A scenario for achieving a low velocity dispersion for the galaxy [KKS 2000]04 (aka NGC 1052-DF2) and similar galaxies is presented. A progenitor halo corresponding to a $z=0$ halo of mass $\sim 5\times 10^{10}\; \textrm{M}_\odot$ and a low concentration parameter (but consistent with cosmological simulations) infalls onto a Milky Way-size host at early times. {Substantial removal of cold gas} from the inner regions by supernova feedback and ram pressure, assisted by tidal stripping of the dark matter in the outer regions, leads to a substantial reduction of the velocity dispersion of stars wi…
The number of Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) in clusters is of significant importance to constrain models of their formation and evolution. Furthermore, their distribution inside clusters may tell us something about their interactions with their environments. In this work we revisit the abundance of UDGs in a more consistent way than in previous studies. We add new data of UDGs in eight clusters from the Kapteyn IAC WEAVE INT Clusters Survey (KIWICS), covering a mass range in which only a few clusters have been studied before, and complement these with a compilation of works in the literature t…

We present a kinematical study of the nearly edge-on galaxy ESO 379-G006 that shows the existence of extraplanar ionized gas. With Fabry-Perot spectroscopy at H-alpha, we study the kinematics of ESO 379-G006 using velocity maps and position-velocity diagrams parallel to the major and to the minor axis of the galaxy. We build the rotation curve of the disk and discuss the role of projection effects due to the fact of viewing this galaxy nearly edge-on. The twisting of the isovelocities in the radial velocity field of the disk of ESO 379-G006 as well as the kinematic asymmetries found in some po…
Using Jeans modelling, we calculate the velocity dispersion profile of the ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) Dragonfly 44 in MOND. For the nominal mass-to-light ratio from the literature and an isotropic profile, the agreement with the data is excellent near the center of the galaxy. However, in modified gravity, close to the cluster core, the gravitational environment should bring the galaxy back towards the Newtonian behavior. This success of the isolated MOND prediction for the central velocity dispersion could then mean that the galaxy is at large distances ($\gg5$ Mpc) from the cluster core, as …
The structure and kinematics of gaseous, disk-halo interfaces are imprinted with the processes that transfer mass, metals, and energy between galactic disks and their environments. We study the extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) layer in the interacting, star-forming galaxy NGC 5775 to better understand the consequences of star-formation feedback on the dynamical state of the thick-disk interstellar medium (ISM). Combining emission-line spectroscopy from the Robert Stobie Spectrograph on the Southern African Large Telescope with radio continuum observations from Continuum Halos in Nearby G…
We report the discovery of a large population of Ultra-diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) in the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2744 (z=0.308) as observed by the Hubble Frontier Fields program. Since this cluster is ~5 times more massive than Coma, our observations allow us to extend 0.7 dex beyond the high-mass end of the relationship between UDG abundance and cluster mass reported by van der Burg et al. 2016. Using the same selection criteria as van der Burg et al. 2016, A2744 hosts an estimated 2133 +/- 613 UDGs, ten times the number in Coma. As noted by Lee & Jang 2016, A2744 contains numerous unresolv…
The velocity dispersion of the ultra diffuse galaxy NGC1052-DF2 was found to be $σ_{\rm gc}=7.8^{+5.2}_{-2.2} \ \mathrm{kms^{-1}}$, much lower than expected from the stellar mass -- halo mass relation and nearly identical to the expected value from the stellar mass alone. This result was based on the radial velocities of ten luminous globular clusters that were assumed to be associated with the galaxy. A more precise measurement is possible from high resolution spectroscopy of the diffuse stellar light. Here we present an integrated spectrum of the diffuse light of NGC1052-DF2 obtained with th…
The kinematics of molecular gas are crucial for setting the stage for star formation. One key question related to the kinematic properties of gas is how they depend on the spatial scale. We aim to describe the CO spectra, velocity dispersions, and especially the linewidth-size relation, of molecular gas from cloud (parsec-) scales to kiloparsec scales in a complete region within the Milky Way disk. We utilise the census of molecular clouds within 2 kpc from our earlier work, together with CO emission data for them from the literature. We study the kinematics and the Larson's relations for the …
The observed line-of-sight velocity dispersion $σ_{los}$ of the ultra diffuse galaxy Dragonfly 44 (DF44) requires a Newtonian dynamical mass-to-light ratio of $M_{dyn}/L_I=26^{+7}_{-6}$ Solar units. This is well outside the acceptable limits of our stellar population synthesis (SPS) models, which we construct using the integrated galactic initial mass function (IGIMF) theory. Assuming DF44 is in isolation and using Jeans analysis, we calculate $σ_{los}$ profiles of DF44 in Milgromian dynamics (MOND) and modified gravity (MOG) theories without invoking dark matter. Comparing with the observed k…
We present new redshift measurements for 19 candidate, ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) from the Systematically Measuring Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies (SMUDGes) survey after conducting a long-slit, spectroscopic follow-up campaign on 23 candidates at the Large Binocular Telescope. We combine these results with redshift measurements from other sources for 29 SMUDGes and 20 non-SMUDGes candidate UDGs. Together, this sample yields 44 spectroscopically-confirmed UDGs ($r_e\geq1.5$ kpc and $μ_g(0)\geq24$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ within uncertainties) and spans cluster and field environments, with all but one proje…
We present a comparative study of molecular and ionized gas kinematics in nearby galaxies. These results are based on observations from the EDGE survey, which measured spatially resolved $^{12}$CO(J=1-0) in 126 nearby galaxies. Every galaxy in EDGE has corresponding resolved ionized gas measurements from CALIFA. Using a sub-sample of 17 rotation dominated, star-forming galaxies where precise molecular gas rotation curves could be extracted, we derive CO and H$α$ rotation curves using the same geometric parameters out to $\gtrsim$1 $R_e$. We find that $\sim$75% of our sample galaxies have small…
Due to the peculiar properties of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs), understanding their origin presents a major challenge. Previous X-ray studies demonstrated that the bulk of UDGs lack substantial X-ray emission, implying that they reside in low-mass dark matter halos. This result, in concert with other observational and theoretical studies, pointed out that most UDGs belong to the class of dwarf galaxies. However, a subset of UDGs is believed to host a large population of globular clusters (GCs), which is indicative of massive dark matter halos. This, in turn, hints that some UDGs may be failed…
We present follow-up observations to those of Geballe & Oka (2010), who found high column densities of H3+ ~100 pc off of the Galactic center (GC) on the lines of sight to 2MASS J17432173-2951430 (J1743) and 2MASS J17470898-2829561 (J1747). The wavelength coverages on these sightlines have been extended in order to observe two key transitions of H3+, R(3,3)l and R(2,2)l, that constrain the temperatures and densities of the environments. The profiles of the H3+ R(3,3)l line, which is due only to gas in the GC, closely matches the differences between the H3+ R(1,1)l and CO line profiles, just as…
We investigate the prevalence, properties, and kinematics of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) in a sample of 25 edge-on galaxies selected from the CALIFA survey. We measure ionized gas scale heights from ${\rm Hα}$ and find that 90% have measurable scale heights with a median of $0.8^{+0.7}_{-0.4}$ kpc. From the ${\rm Hα}$ kinematics, we find that 60% of galaxies show a decrease in the rotation velocity as a function of height above the midplane. This lag is characteristic of eDIG, and we measure a median lag of 21 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$ which is comparable to lags measured in the litera…
Supernovae feedback driven expansion has proven to be a viable mechanism to explain the average properties of Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) such as the sizes, colors, mass and internal kinematics. Here, we explore the origin of stellar metallicity gradients in feedback driven simulated UDGs from the NIHAO project and compare them with the observed distribution of metallicity gradients of both Local Group dwarfs as well as of the recently observed UDG DF44. Simulated UDGs display a large variety of metallicity profiles, showing flat to negative gradients, similarly to what is observed in LG dwa…
