We clarify the problem in which occasions can gravitational force be regarded emergent from thermodynamics, by proposing an entropic mechanism that can extract the entropic gradient existing in spacetime, due to the variation of the Casini-Bekenstein bound in specific quasi-static processes with the heat flux $δQ$ into the whole casual wedge. We explicitly formulate the derivation of inertial force as the emergent gravitational attraction from the Entanglement First Law. We find the saturation of the bound along with the vanishing relative entropy corresponds to the variation of minimal surface. To covariant meaning, it is the Bousso bound. Besides, this understanding is connected to recent Pennington's work on Black Hole Information Paradox, suggesting a Page-Curve function origins from removing attraction by the external heat bath. Our theory from entanglement now overcomes several criticism towards Verlinde's original entropic force proposal, and is able to co-exist with Susskind's Complexity Tendency. This entropic mechanism reproduces the Newton's Second Law in Rindler space and the gravitational force (together with derivation of the Einstein equation) beyond the near-horizon region, and can be adapted into AdS/CFT and other generic situations.
We give a critical overview of various attempts to describe gravity as an emergent phenomenon, starting from examples of condensed matter physics, to arrive to more sophisticated pregeometric models. The common line of thought is to view the graviton as a composite particle/collective mode. However, we will describe many different ways in which this idea is realized in practice.
Four-dimensional supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on a sphere has highly charged baryon-like states built from anti-symmetric combinations of the adjoint scalars. We show that these states, which are equivalently described as holes in a free fermi sea of a reduced matrix model, are D-branes. Their excitations are stringlike and effectively realize Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in various directions. The low energy brane dynamics should realize an emergent gauge theory that is local on a new space. We show that the Gauss' Law associated to this emergent gauge symmetry appears …
We revisit a non-perturbative formulation leading to a vacuum created gravitational pair of (33)-brane by a Poincare dual higher form U (1) gauge theory on a D4 -brane. In particular, the analysis has revealed a dynamical geometric torsion H 3 for an on-shell Neveu-Schwarz (NS) form on a fat 4-brane. We argue that a D-instanton can be a viable candidate to incorporate the quintessence correction hidden to an emergent (3 + 1)-dimensional brane universe. It is shown that a dynamical non-perturbative correction may be realized with an axionic scalar QFT on an emergent anti 3-brane within a gravit…
Fermionic bound states (mesinos) of messengers can play the role of right-handed neutrinos and due to their heavy masses they can realize the seesaw mechanism providing light and heavy sterile neutrinos. We study simple models with a single mesino to present the proof of principle. We extend our analysis to three mesino states where after the seesaw mechanism, three light and several heavy sterile neutrinos are obtained.
We present an exposition on the geometrization of the electromagnetic force. We show that, in noncommutative (NC) spacetime, there always exists a coordinate transformation to locally eliminate the electromagnetic force, which is precisely the Darboux theorem in symplectic geometry. As a consequence, the electromagnetism can be realized as a geometrical property of spacetime like gravity. We show that the geometrization of the electromagnetic force in NC spacetime is the origin of gravity, dubbed as the emergent gravity. We discuss how the emergent gravity reveals a novel, radically different …
Seeking for the proper situation of Emergent Gravity, we recent reveal that the entropic mechanism only happens when extremal surfaces are varied, which is similar to the non-gravitational-bath-coupled setup of the island development. In this paper, we consider perturbing thin shell state outside horizon during equilibrating, to find the evolution of these Euclidean states requires an external force to be $ F_{ex}\propto T_{H}δA(μ_a)$, proportional to area variation of the apparent horizon which could transform into the actual event horizon as extremal surface. We analogize the falling tendenc…
A nonsingular emergent universe cosmology can be realized by a nonconventional spinor field as first developed in \cite{Cai:2012yf}. We study the mechanisms of generating scale-invariant primordial power spectrum of curvature perturbation in the frame of spinor emergent universe cosmology. Particularly, we introduce a light scalar field of which the kinetic term couples to the bilinear of the spinor field. This kinetic coupling can give rise to an effective "Hubble radius" for primordial fluctuations from the scalar field to squeeze at large length scales as well as to form a nearly scale-inva…
We showed before that self-dual electromagnetism in noncommutative (NC) spacetime is equivalent to self-dual Einstein gravity. This result implies a striking picture about gravity: Gravity can emerge from electromagnetism in NC spacetime. Gravity is then a collective phenomenon emerging from gauge fields living in fuzzy spacetime. We elucidate in some detail why electromagnetism in NC spacetime should be a theory of gravity. In particular, we show that NC electromagnetism is realized through the Darboux theorem as a diffeomorphism symmetry G which is spontaneously broken to symplectomorphism H…
We present the arguments suggesting that time is emergent in quantum gravity and discuss extensively, but without any technical detail, the many aspects that can be involved in such emergence. We refer to both the physical issues that need to be tackled, by quantum gravity formalisms, to realize concretely this emergent picture of time, and the conceptual challenges that have to be addressed in parallel to achieve a proper understanding of it.
This paper revisits the question of reconstructing bulk gauge fields as boundary operators in AdS/CFT. In the presence of the wormhole dual to the thermofield double state of two CFTs, the existence of bulk gauge fields is in some tension with the microscopic tensor factorization of the Hilbert space. I explain how this tension can be resolved by splitting the gauge field into charged constituents, and I argue that this leads to a new argument for the "principle of completeness", which states that the charge lattice of a gauge theory coupled to gravity must be fully populated. I also claim tha…
We study metric-compatible Poisson structures in the semi-classical limit of noncommutative emergent gravity. Space-time is realized as quantized symplectic submanifold embedded in R^D, whose effective metric depends on the embedding as well as on the Poisson structure. We study solutions of the equations of motion for the Poisson structure, focusing on a natural class of solutions such that the effective metric coincides with the embedding metric. This leads to i-(anti-) self-dual complexified Poisson structures in four space-time dimensions with Lorentzian signature. Solutions on manifolds w…
In physical theories where the energy (action) is localized near a submanifold of Euclidean (Minkowski) space, there is a universal expression for the energy (or the action). We derive a multipole expansion for the energy that has a finite number of terms, and depends on intrinsic geometric invariants of the submanifold and extrinsic invariants of the embedding of the submanifold. This universal expression is a generalization of an exact formula of Hermann Weyl for the volume of a tube. We describe when our result is applicable, when our generalization gives an exact result, and when there are…
We study the gauge/gravity duality between bubbling geometries in type IIA supergravity and gauge theories with SU(2|4) symmetry, which consist of N=4 super Yang-Mills on $R\times S^3/Z_k$, N=8 super Yang-Mills on $R\times S^2$ and the plane wave matrix model. We show that the geometries are realized as field configurations in the strong coupling region of the gauge theories. On the gravity side, the bubbling geometries can be mapped to electrostatic systems with conducting disks. We derive integral equations which determine the charge densities on the disks. On the gauge theory side, we obtai…
This paper provides a heuristic derivation of how classical gravitational physics in the AdS/CFT correspondence appears from the strong dynamics of the N=4 SYM theory in a systematic way. We do this in a minisuperspace approximation by studying 1/8 BPS configurations. We show that this is related to a gauged matrix quantum mechanics of commuting matrices. We can show that our description matches the semiclassical physics of 1/8 BPS states in supergravity. We also provide a heuristic description of how massive strings appear in the geometry, and how at strong 't Hooft coupling they become local…
In the framework of the emergent gravity scenario by Verlinde, it was recently observed by Liu and Prokopec that, among other things, an anomalous pericenter precession would affect the orbital motion of a test particle orbiting an isolated central body. Here, it is shown that, if it were real, its expected magnitude for the inner planets of the Solar System would be at the same level of the present-day accuracy in constraining any possible deviations from their standard perihelion precessions as inferred from long data records spanning about the last century. The most favorable situation for …
It is well-known that there exists a close relation between a large $N$ matrix model and noncommutative (NC) field theory: The latter can be naturally obtained from the former by expanding it around a specific background. Because the matrix model can be a constructive formulation of string theory, this relation suggests that NC field theory can also include quantum gravity. In particular, the NC $U(1)$ gauge theory attracts much attention because its low-energy effective action partially contains gravity where the metric is determined by the $U(1)$ gauge field. Thus, the NC $U(1)$ gauge theory…
We present a new Higgsless model of superconductivity, inspired from anyon superconductivity but P- and T-invariant and generalizable to any dimension. While the original anyon superconductivity mechanism was based on incompressible quantum Hall fluids as average field states, our mechanism involves topological insulators as average field states. In D space dimensions it involves a (D-1)-form fictitious pseudovector gauge field which originates from the condensation of topological defects in compact low-energy effective BF theories. There is no massive Higgs scalar as there is no local order p…
