The gamma-ray background in the indoor environment has been measured up to 3 MeV to evaluate the feasibility of studying low cross-section (nanobarn to picobarn range) astrophysical reactions at the Facility for Research in Experimental Nuclear Astrophysics (FRENA), Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata. An n-type coaxial HPGe detector with 20% relative efficiency has been placed at different locations in the accelerator and beam halls for the measurement. The measured activity has been compared with that at two laboratories (with standard brick walls) with and without passive and active radiation shielding. As the halls at FRENA are well shielded by concrete, the contribution of the shielding in indoor gamma-ray background has been delineated by simulation using a 4p-geometry model.
This article presents the readout electronics of a novel beam monitoring system for ion research facility accelerator. The readout electronics are divided into Front-end Card (FEC) and Readout Control Unit (RCU). FEC uses Topmetal II minus to processes the energy of the hitting particles and convert it into a voltage signal. The main function of RCU is to digitize the analog output signal of FEC and format the raw data. On the other hand, the RCU also processes the control commands from the host and distributes the commands according to the mapping. The readout electronic has been characterize…
Dark Matter is being searched with a variety of methods, each of which tackles this challenge focusing on different kinds of particles, masses and couplings. Here we describe Dark Matter searches conducted with accelerators and fixed targets. In particular, we highlight the contribution of the experiments being built at the new Mainz Energy-recovery Superconducting Accelerator (MESA) facility. MESA will provide intense electron beams for hadron and nuclear physics, as well as for Dark Matter searches with competitive sensitivities.
The next generation of low-background physics experiments will require the use of materials with unprecedented radio-purity. A gamma-counting facility at the Kimballton Underground Research Facility (KURF) has been commissioned to perform initial screening of materials for radioactivity primarily from nuclides in the 238U and 232Th decay chains, 40K and cosmic-ray induced isotopes. The facility consists of two commercial low-background high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors. A continuum background reduction better than a factor of 10 was achieved by going underground. This paper describes the …
The Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF) is under construction in the Soreq Nuclear Research Center at Yavne, Israel. When completed at the beginning of the next decade, SARAF will be a user facility for basic and applied nuclear physics, based on a 40 MeV, 5 mA CW proton/deuteron superconducting linear accelerator. Phase I of SARAF (SARAF-I, 4 MeV, 2 mA CW protons, 5 MeV 1 mA CW deuterons) is already in operation, generating scientific results in several fields of interest. The main ongoing program at SARAF-I is the production of 30 keV neutrons and measurement of Maxwellian Av…
High-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors used for low-background gamma ray spectrometry are usually operated under either a fairly low overburden of the order of one meter of water equivalent (mw.e.) or a high overburden of the order of 100mw.e. or more, e.g. in specialized underground laboratories. The Dortmund Low Background Facility (DLB) combines the advantages of both approaches. The artificial overburden of 10mw.e. already shields the hadronic component of cosmic rays. The inner shielding, featuring a state-of-the-art neutron shielding and an active muon veto, enables low-background gamma …
A laserwire transverse electron beam size measurement system has been developed and operated at the Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) at KEK. Special electron beam optics were developed to create an approximately 1 x 100 μm (vertical x horizontal) electron beam at the laserwire location, which was profiled using a 150 mJ, 71 ps laser pulse with a wavelength of 532 nm. The precise characterisation of the laser propagation allows the non-Gaussian transverse profiles of the electron beam caused by the laser divergence to be deconvolved. A minimum vertical electron beam size of 1.07 ${\pm}$ 0.06 …
A low-energy radioactive ion beam facility for the production and study of nuclei produced close to the proton drip line is under development at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The facility will take advantage of the mass selectivity of the recently commissioned MARA vacuum-mode mass separator. The ions selected by MARA will be stopped and thermalised in a small-volume gas cell prior to extraction and further mass separation. The gas cell design allows for resonance laser ionisation/spectroscopy both in-gas-cell and in-gas-jet. The facility will include expe…

The complex will include linac on ring type electron-positron collider as a phi, charm and tau factory, linac based free electron laser (FEL), ring based third generation synchrotron radiation (SR) source and a few GeV proton accelerator. Preliminary estimations show that integral luminosity of hundred inverse femto-barns per year can be achieved for factory options. The FEL facility is planned to obtain laser beam between IR and soft X-ray region. In additi…
The indium activation diagnostic was calibrated on an accelerator neutron source in order to diagnose deuterium-deuterium (DD) neutron yields of implosion experiments on Shenguang-III facility. The scattered neutron background of the accelerator room was measured by placing a polypropylene shield in front of indium sample, in order to correct the calibrated factor of this activation diagnostic. The proper size of this shield was given by Monte Carlo simulation software. The affect from some other activated nuclei on the calibration was verified by judging whether the measured curve obeys expon…
Construction of the 12 GeV upgrade to the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is presently underway. This upgrade includes doubling the energy of the electron beam to 12 GeV, the addition of a new fourth experimental hall, and the construction of upgraded detector hardware. An overview of this upgrade project is presented, along with highlights of the anticipated experimental program.
Gamma-Beams at the HIgS facility in the USA and anticipated at the ELI-NP facility, now constructed in Romania, present unique new opportunities to advance research in nuclear astrophysics; not the least of which is resolving open questions in oxygen formation during stellar helium burning via a precise measurement of the 12C(a,g) reaction. Time projection chamber (TPC) detectors operating with low pressure gas (as an active target) are ideally suited for such studies. We review the progress of the current research program and plans for the future at the HIγS facility with the optical readout …
Novel ultra-compact, electrically switchable, time-structured/pulsed, ~1-14 MeV-level neutron and photon generators have application embedded into large detector systems, especially calorimeters, for energy and operational calibration. The small sizes are applicable to permanent in-situ deployment, or able to be conveniently inserted into large high energy physics detector systems. For bench- testing of prototypes, or for detector module production testing, these compact n and gamma generators offer advantages.
A staged approach towards muon based facilities for Intensity and Energy Frontier science, building upon existing and proposed facilities at Fermilab, is presented. At each stage, a facility exploring new physics also provides an R&D platform to validate the technology needed for subsequent stages. The envisioned program begins with nuSTORM, a sensitive sterile neutrino search which also provides precision neutrino cross-section measurements while developing the technology of using and cooling muons. A staged Neutrino Factory based upon Project X, sending beams towards the Sanford Underground …
We present a conceptual design for a novel continuous wave electron-linac based high-intensity high-brightness slow-positron production source with a projected intensity on the order of 10$^{10}$ e$^+$/s. Reaching this intensity in our design relies on the transport of positrons (T$_+$ below 600 keV) from the electron-positron pair production converter target to a low-radiation and low-temperature area for moderation in a high-efficiency cryogenic rare gas moderator, solid Ne. This design progressed through Monte Carlo optimizations of: electron/positron beam energies and converter target thic…
BRIKEN is a complex detection system to be installed at the RIB-facility of the RIKEN Nishina Center. It is aimed at the detection of heavy-ion implants, $β$-particles, $γ$-rays and $β$-delayed neutrons. The whole detection setup involves the Advanced Implantation Detection Array (AIDA), two HPGe Clover detectors and a large set of 166 counters of 3He embedded in a high-density polyethylene matrix. This article reports on a novel methodology developed for the conceptual design and optimisation of the 3He-tubes array, aiming at the best possible performance in terms of neutron detection. The al…
Measurements of neutron total cross-sections of natural bismuth in the neutron energy region from 0.1 eV to 100 eV have been performed by using the time-of-flight method at the Pohang Neutron Facility, which consists of an electron linear accelerator, a water-cooled tantalum target with a water moderator, and a 12-m-long time-of-flight path. A 6Li-ZnS(Ag) scintillator with a diameter of 12.5 cm and a thickness of 1.6 cm is employed as a neutron detector, and a piece of high purity natural bismuth metallic plates with a thickness of 3 mm is used for the neutron transmission measurement. The pre…
An electron accelerator in the 100 MeV range, similar to the one used at BNL's Accelerator test Facility, for example, would have some advantages as a calibration tool for water cerenkov or Liquid Argon neutrino detectors. We describe a compact secondary beam design that could be used for this application.
The high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrade is setting now a new challenge for particle detector technologies. The increase in luminosity will produce a particle background in the gas-based muon detectors that is ten times higher than under conditions at the LHC. The detailed knowledge of the detector performance in the presence of such a high background is crucial for an optimized design and efficient operation after the HL-LHC upgrade. A precise understanding of possible aging effects of detector materials and gases is of extreme importance. To cope with these challenging requirements, a new Ga…
CERN has launched a study phase to evaluate the feasibility of a new high-intensity beam dump facility at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron accelerator with the primary goal of exploring Hidden Sector models and searching for Light Dark Matter, but which also offers opportunities for other fixed target flavour physics programs such as rare tau lepton decays and tau neutrino studies. The new facility will require - among other infrastructure - a target complex in which a dense target/dump will be installed, capable of absorbing the entire energy of the beam extracted from the SPS accelerator. I…
The investigation of beam halo transverse distributions is important for the understanding of beam losses and the control of backgrounds in Future Linear Colliders (FLC). A novel in vacuum diamond sensor (DSv) scanner with four strips has been designed and developed for the investigation of the beam halo transverse distributions and also for the diagnostics of Compton recoil electrons after the interaction point (IP) of ATF2, a low energy (1.3 GeV) prototype of the final focus system for the ILC and CLIC linear collider projects. Using the DSv, a dynamic range of $\sim10^6$ has been successful…
The GeMSE (Germanium Material and meteorite Screening Experiment) facility operates a low-background HPGe crystal in an underground laboratory with a moderate rock overburden of 620$\,$m.w.e. in Switzerland. It has been optimized for continuous remote operation. A multi-layer passive shielding, a muon veto, and a boil-off nitrogen purge line inside the measurement cavity minimize the instrument's background rate, which decreased by 33% to (164$\pm$2)$\,$counts/day (100-2700$\,$keV) after five years of underground operation. This agrees with the prediction based on the expected decay of short-l…
One of the future multi-MW accelerators is the LBNE Experiment where Fermilab aims to produce a beam of neutrinos with a 2.3 MW proton beam as part of a suite of experiments associated with Project X. Specifically, the LBNE Neutrino Beam Facility aims for a 2+ MW, 60 -120 GeV pulsed, high intensity proton beam produced in the Project X accelerator intercepted by a low Z solid target to facilitate the production of low energy neutrinos. The multi-MW level LBNE proton beam will be characterized by intensities of the order of 1.6 e+14 p/pulse, σ radius of 1.5 -3.5 mm and a 9.8 microsecond pulse l…
The summation amplitude of coincident pulses (SACP) method which is optimal solution to reduce compton scatter phenomenon and pairs phenomenon in the gamma spectra of nuclei decay gamma cascades was used. In the 1982, in comparision with original method [1], it was improved such as the interfacing techniques, and data analysis with aid of computer [2]. In order to get better, the fast/slow coincidence spectroscopy system was developed into a fast coincidence spectroscopy. It is advantageous and easy operation. The off-line measure results with radioactive source 60-Co and on-line measure resul…
A new photonuclear thermal neutron facility has been developed at the Physics Department of University of Torino. The facility is based on a medical electron LINAC coupled to a compact converter and moderator assembly. A homogenous thermal neutron field of the order of 10$^6$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ is achievable in the enclosed irradiation cavity with low gamma and fast neutron contaminations. Its intensity can be tuned varying the LINAC current. These characteristics make the source appropriate for several applications like detectors development, material studies and BNCT preclinical research. Thi…
This work presents new integral data measured at the ASP 14 MeV neutron irradiation facility at Aldermaston in the UK, which has recently become available for fusion-related work through the CCFE materials programme. Measurements of reaction products from activation experiments using elemental foils were carried out using gamma spectrometry in a high efficiency, high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector and associated digital signal processing hardware. Following irradiation and rapid extraction to the measurement cell, gamma emissions were acquired with both energy and time bins. Integral cross s…
