We analyze an extremely deep 450-$μ$m image ($1σ=0.56$\,mJy\,beam$^{-1}$) of a $\simeq 300$\,arcmin$^{2}$ area in the CANDELS/COSMOS field as part of the SCUBA-2 Ultra Deep Imaging EAO Survey (STUDIES). We select a robust (signal-to-noise ratio $\geqslant 4$) and flux-limited ($\geqslant 4$\,mJy) sample of 164 sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) at 450-$μ$m that have $K$-band counterparts in the COSMOS2015 catalog identified from radio or mid-infrared imaging. Utilizing this SMG sample and the 4705 $K$-band-selected non-SMGs that reside within the noise level $\leqslant 1$\,mJy\,beam$^{-1}$ region of the 450-$μ$m image as a training set, we develop a machine-learning classifier using $K$-band magnitude and color-color pairs based on the thirteen-band photometry available in this field. We apply the trained machine-learning classifier to the wider COSMOS field (1.6\,deg$^{2}$) using the same COSMOS2015 catalog and identify a sample of 6182 450-$μ$m SMG candidates with similar colors. The number density, radio and/or mid-infrared detection rates, redshift and stellar mass distributions, and the stacked 450-$μ$m fluxes of these SMG candidates, from the S2COSMOS observations of the wide field, agree with the measurements made in the much smaller CANDELS field, supporting the effectiveness of the classifier. Using this 450-$μ$m SMG candidate sample, we measure the two-point autocorrelation functions from $z=3$ down to $z=0.5$. We find that the 450-$μ$m SMG candidates reside in halos with masses of $\simeq (2.0\pm0.5) \times10^{13}\,h^{-1}\,\rm M_{\odot}$ across this redshift range. We do not find evidence of downsizing that has been suggested by other recent observational studies.
The SCUBA-2 Ultra Deep Imaging EAO Survey (STUDIES) is a three-year JCMT Large Program aiming at reaching the 450 $μ$m confusion limit in the COSMOS-CANDELS region, to study a representative sample of the high-redshift far-infrared galaxy population that gives rise to the bulk of the far-infrared background. We present the first-year data from STUDIES. We have reached a 450 $μ$m noise level of 0.91~mJy for point sources at the map center, covered an area of 151 arcmin$^2$, and detected 98 and 141 sources at 4.0 and 3.5 $σ$, respectively. Our derived counts are best constrained in the 3.5-25 mJ…
Over the last two decades, the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) and SCUBA-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) achieved gread success in discovering the population of dusty starburst galaxies in the early universe. The SCUBA-2 surveys at 450 micron and 850 micron set important constraints on the obscured star formation over cosmic time, and in combination of deep optical and near-IR data, allows the study of protoclusters and structure formation. However, the current submillimeter (submm) surveys by JCMT are still limited by area of sky coverage (confusion limit mappi…
SCUBA-2 Ultra Deep Imaging EAO Survey (STUDIES). V. Confusion-limited Submillimeter Galaxy Number Counts at 450 $μ$m and Data Release for the COSMOS Field
We construct a SCUBA-2 450-$μ$m map in the COSMOS field that covers an area of 300 arcmin$^{2}$ and reaches a 1$σ$ noise level of 0.65 mJy in the deepest region. We extract 256 sources detected at 450 $μ$m with signal-to-noise ratio $>$ 4.0 and analyze the physical properties of their multi-wavelength counterparts. We find that most of the sources are at $z\lesssim3$, with a median of $z = 1.79^{+0.03}_{-0.15}$. About $35^{+32}_{-25}$% of our sources are classified as starburst galaxies based on their total star-formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses ($M_{\ast}$). By fitting the far-infrare…
We present structural parameters and morphological properties of faint 450-um selected submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) from the JCMT Large Program, STUDIES, in the COSMOS-CANDELS region. Their properties are compared to an 850um selected and a matched star-forming samples. We investigate stellar structures of 169 faint 450-um sources (S450=2.8-29.6mJy; S/N>4) at z<3 using HST near-infrared observations. Based on our spectral energy distribution fitting, half of such faint SMGs (LIR=10^11.65+-0.98Lsun) lie above the star-formation rate (SFR)/stellar mass plane. The size-mass relation shows that t…
This white paper gives a brief summary of Galactic continuum surveys with the next generation 850 micron camera at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) in the next decade. This new camera will have mapping speeds at least 10-20 times faster than the present SCUBA-2 camera, and will enable deep (<10 mJy/beam) and extensive continuum surveys such as a wider (-5 deg.<l<240 deg., |b|<2-5 deg.) Galactic Plane survey, a larger Gould Belt survey, and a follow-up survey of all Planck compact objects visible from the northern hemisphere. These surveys will provide a complete census of molecular clo…
We present sensitive 850$μ$m imaging of the COSMOS field using 640hr of new and archival observations taken with SCUBA-2 at the East Asian Observatory's James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The SCUBA-2 COSMOS survey (S2COSMOS) achieves a median noise level of $σ_{850μ{\mathrm{m}}}$=1.2mJy/beam over an area of 1.6 sq. degree (MAIN; HST/ACS footprint), and $σ_{850μ{\mathrm{m}}}$=1.7mJy/beam over an additional 1 sq. degree of supplementary (SUPP) coverage. We present a catalogue of 1020 and 127 sources detected at a significance level of >4$σ$ and >4.3$σ$ in the MAIN and SUPP regions, respectively, cor…
We present high-resolution 870-um ALMA continuum maps of 30 bright sub-millimeter sources in the UKIDSS UDS field. These sources are selected from deep, 1-square degrees 850-um maps from the SCUBA--2 Cosmology Legacy Survey, and are representative of the brightest sources in the field (median SCUBA2 flux S_850=8.7+/-0.4 mJy). We detect 52 sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) at >4-sigma significance in our 30 ALMA maps. In 61+/-17% of the ALMA maps the single-dish source comprises a blend of >=2 SMGs, where the secondary SMGs are Ultra--Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) with L_IR>10^12 Lo. The bri…
We present high-resolution (0.3'') ALMA 870um imaging of 52 sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) field and investigate the size and morphology of the sub-millimeter (sub-mm) emission on 2-10kpc scales. We derive a median intrinsic angular size of FWHM=0.30$\pm$0.04'' for the 23 SMGs in the sample detected at a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) >10. Using the photometric redshifts of the SMGs we show that this corresponds to a median physical half-light diameter of 2.4$\pm$0.2kpc. A stacking analysis of the SMGs detected at an SNR <10 shows they have sizes consistent with the…
We study the radio properties of 706 sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) selected at 870$μ$m with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey map of the Ultra Deep Survey field. We detect 273 SMGs at $>4σ$ in deep Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array 1.4 GHz observations, of which a subset of 45 SMGs are additionally detected in 610 MHz Giant Metre-Wave Radio Telescope imaging. We quantify the far-infrared/radio correlation through parameter $q_\text{IR}$, defined as the logarithmic ratio of the far-infrared and radio luminosity, and include the radio-undetected SMGs thro…
We report the results of a deep SCUBA-2 850- and 450-$μ$m survey for dust-obscured ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) in the field of the z=1.46 cluster XCS J2215.9-1738. We detect a striking overdensity of sub-millimeter sources coincident with the core of this cluster: $\sim 3-4 \times$ higher than expected in a blank field. We use the likely radio and mid-infrared counterparts to show that the bulk of these sub-millimeter sources have spectroscopic or photometric redshifts which place them in the cluster and that their multi-wavelength properties are consistent with this association…
We present a multi-wavelength analysis of 52 sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs), identified using ALMA 870$μ$m continuum imaging in a pilot program to precisely locate bright SCUBA2-selected sub-mm sources in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) field. Using the available deep (especially near-infrared), panoramic imaging of the UDS field at optical-to-radio wavelengths we characterize key properties of the SMG population. The median photometric redshift of the bright ALMA/SCUBA-2 UDS (AS2UDS) SMGs that are detected in a sufficient number of wavebands to derive a robust photometric redshift is $z$=2…
We report the first results of AS2UDS: an 870 $μ$m continuum survey with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) of a total area of $\sim$ 50 arcmin$^2$ comprising a complete sample of 716 submillimeter sources drawn from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS) map of the UKIDSS/UDS field. The S2CLS parent sample covers a 0.96 degree$^2$ field at $σ_{850}=0.90\pm0.05$ mJy beam$^{-1}$. Our deep, high-resolution ALMA observations with $σ_{\rm 870}\sim$ 0.25 mJy and a 0.15"--0.30" FWHM synthesized beam, provide precise locations for 695 submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) responsibl…
We present multi-wavelength observations (from optical to sub-millimeter, including Spitzer and SCUBA) of H2XMMJ 003357.2-120038 (also GD158_19), an X-ray selected, luminous narrow-line (Type 2) quasar at z=1.957 selected from the HELLAS2XMM survey. Its broad-band properties can be reasonably well modeled assuming three components: a stellar component to account for the optical and near-IR emission, an AGN component (i.e., dust heated by an accreting active nucleus), dominant in the mid-IR, with an optical depth at 9.7 micron along the line of sight (close to the equatorial plane of the obscur…
We report the redshift of an unlensed, highly obscured submillimetre galaxy (SMG), HS1700.850.1, the brightest SMG (S850um =19.1 mJy) detected in the JCMT/SCUBA-2 Baryonic Structure Survey, based on the detection of its CO line emission. Using the IRAM PdBI-WIDEX with 3.6GHz band width, we serendipitously detect an emission line at 150.6 GHz. From a search over 14.5 GHz in the 3-mm and 2-mm atmospheric windows, we confirm the identification of this line as CO(5-4) at z = 2.816, meaning that it does not reside in the z~2.30 proto-cluster in this field. Measurement of the 870um source size (<0.8…
We report detections of two 1.2 mm continuum sources ($S_\mathrm{1.2mm}$ ~ 0.6 mJy) without any counterparts in the deep $H$- and/or $K$-band image (i.e., $K$-band magnitude $\gtrsim$ 26 mag). These near-infrared-dark faint millimeter sources are uncovered by ASAGAO, a deep and wide-field ($\simeq$ 26 arcmin$^2$) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.2 mm survey. One has a red IRAC (3.6 and 4.5 $μ$m) counterpart, and the other has been independently detected at 850 and 870 $μ$m using SCUBA2 and ALMA Band 7, respectively. Their optical to radio spectral energy distributions indi…
We present the survey design, data reduction, construction of images, and source catalog of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) twenty-six arcmin^2 survey of GOODS-S at one-millimeter (ASAGAO). ASAGAO is a deep (1sigma ~ 61 uJy/beam for a 250 klambda-tapered map with a synthesized beam size of 0.51" x 0.45") and wide area (26 arcmin^2) survey on a contiguous field at 1.2 mm. By combining with ALMA archival data in the GOODS-South field, we obtained a deeper map in the same region (1sigma ~ 30 uJy/beam for a deep region with a 250 klambda-taper, and a synthesized beam size o…
We have acquired sub-millimeter observations of 33 fields containing 37 Herbig Ae/Be (HAEBE) stars or potential HAEBE stars, including SCUBA maps of all but two of these stars. Nine target stars show extended dust emission. The other 18 are unresolved, suggesting that the dust envelopes or disks around these stars are less than a few arcseconds in angular size. In several cases we find that the strongest sub-millimeter emission originates from younger, heavily embedded sources rather than from the HAEBE star, which means that previous models must be viewed with caution. These new data, in comb…
We present a "super-deblended" far-infrared to (sub)millimeter photometric catalog in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS), prepared with the method recently developed by Liu et al. 2018, with key adaptations. We obtain point spread function (PSF) fitting photometry at fixed prior positions including 88,008 galaxies detected in either VLA 1.4~GHz, 3~GHz and/or MIPS 24~$μ$m images. By adding a specifically carved mass-selected sample (with an evolving stellar mass limit), a highly complete prior sample of 194,428 galaxies is achieved for deblending FIR/(sub)mm images. We performed ``active' rem…
The identification of high-redshift massive galaxies with old stellar populations may pose challenges to some models of galaxy formation. However, to securely classify a galaxy as quiescent, it is necessary to exclude significant ongoing star formation, something that can be challenging to achieve at high redshift. In this letter, we analyse deep ALMA/870um and SCUBA-2/450um imaging of the claimed "post-starburst" galaxy ZF-20115 at z=3.717 that exhibits a strong Balmer break and absorption lines. The far-infrared imaging reveals a luminous starburst located 0.4+/-0.1 arcsec (~3kpc in projecti…
We present Early Science observations with the Large Millimeter Telescope, AzTEC 1.1 mm continuum images and wide bandwidth spectra (73-111 GHz) acquired with the Redshift Search Receiver, towards four bright lensed submillimetre galaxies identified through the Herschel Lensing Survey-snapshot and the SCUBA-2 Cluster Snapshot Survey. This pilot project studies the star formation history and the physical properties of the molecular gas and dust content of the highest redshift galaxies identified through the benefits of gravitational magnification. We robustly detect dust continuum emission for …
We report the serendipitous detection of two 3 mm continuum sources found in deep ALMA Band 3 observations to study intermediate redshift galaxies in the COSMOS field. One is near a foreground galaxy at 1.3", but is a previously unknown dust-obscured star-forming galaxy (DSFG) at probable $z_{CO}=3.329$, illustrating the risk of misidentifying shorter wavelength counterparts. The optical-to-mm spectral energy distribution (SED) favors a grey $λ^{-0.4}$ attenuation curve and results in significantly larger stellar mass and SFR compared to a Calzetti starburst law, suggesting caution when relati…
Wide-field sub-millimetre surveys have driven many major advances in galaxy evolution in the past decade, but without extensive follow-up observations the coarse angular resolution of these surveys limits the science exploitation. This has driven the development of various analytical deconvolution methods. In the last half a decade Generative Adversarial Networks have been used to attempt deconvolutions on optical data. Here we present an autoencoder with a novel loss function to overcome this problem in the sub-millimeter wavelength range. This approach is successfully demonstrated on Hersche…
We report the results of a search for serendipitous [CII] 157.74$μ$m emitters at $z\sim4.4$-$4.7$ using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The search exploits the AS2UDS continuum survey, which covers ~50 arcmin$^2$ of the sky towards 695 luminous ($S_{870}\gtrsim1$mJy) submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), selected from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS) 0.96deg$^2$ Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) field. We detect ten candidate line emitters, with an expected false detection rate of ten percent. All of these line emitters correspond to 870$μ$m continuum-detected sources in AS2…
We present the results of our systematic search for the reddest far-infrared (FIR) and submillimeter (sub-mm) galaxies using the data from the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) and the SCUBA2 Cosmological Legacy Survey (S2CLS). The red FIR galaxies are "500~$μ$m risers," whose spectral energy distributions increase with wavelength across the three FIR passbands of the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver (SPIRE) of Herschel. Within 106.5 deg$^2$ of the HerMES fields, we have selected 629 500 $μ$m risers. The red sub-mm galaxies are "SPIRE dropouts," which are prominent d…
We present a list of candidate gravitationally lensed dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) from the HerMES Large Mode Survey (HeLMS) and the Herschel Stripe 82 Survey (HerS). Together, these partially overlapping surveys cover 372 deg$^{2}$ on the sky. After removing local spiral galaxies and known radio-loud blazars, our candidate list of lensed DSFGs is composed of 77 sources with 500 $μ$m flux densities ($S_{500}$) greater than 100 mJy. Such sources are dusty starburst galaxies similar to the first bright Sub Millimeter Galaxies (SMGs) discovered with SCUBA. We expect a large fraction of thi…
We have obtained sensitive dust continuum polarization observations at 850 $μ$m in the B213 region of Taurus using POL-2 on SCUBA-2 at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), as part of the BISTRO (B-fields in STar-forming Region Observations) survey. These observations allow us to probe magnetic field (B-field) at high spatial resolution ($\sim$2000 au or $\sim$0.01 pc at 140 pc) in two protostellar cores (K04166 and K04169) and one prestellar core (Miz-8b) that lie within the B213 filament. Using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we estimate the B-field strengths in K04166, K04169, and…
We present a host morphological study of 1266 far-infrared galaxies (FIRGs) and submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the Cosmic Evolution Survey field using the F160W and F814W images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. The FIRGs and SMGs are selected from the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey and the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey, respectively. Their precise locations are based on the interferometry data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and the Very Large Array. These objects are mostly at $0.1\lesssim z\lesssim 3$. The SMGs can be regarded as the population at…
Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) candidates at z>10 are rapidly being identified in JWST/NIRCam observations. Due to the (redshifted) break produced by neutral hydrogen absorption of rest-frame UV photons, these sources are expected to drop out in the bluer filters while being well detected in redder filters. However, here we show that dust-enshrouded star-forming galaxies at lower redshifts (z<7) may also mimic the near-infrared (near-IR) colors of z>10 LBGs, representing potential contaminants in LBG candidate samples. First, we analyze CEERS-DSFG-1, a NIRCam dropout undetected in the F115W and F150…
Identifying the counterparts of submillimetre (submm) galaxies (SMGs) in multiwavelength images is a critical step towards building accurate models of the evolution of strongly star-forming galaxies in the early Universe. However, obtaining a statistically significant sample of robust associations is very challenging due to the poor angular resolution of single-dish submm facilities. Recently, a large sample of single-dish-detected SMGs in the UKIDSS UDS field, a subset of the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS), was followed up with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA),…
