We consider two mutually interacting fermionic particle species on a one-dimensional lattice and study how the mass ratio $η$ between the two species affects the (equilibration) dynamics of the particles. Focussing on the regime of strong interactions and high temperatures, two well-studied points of reference are given by (i) the case of equal masses ${η= 1}$, i.e., the standard Fermi-Hubbard chain, where initial non-equilibrium density distributions are known to decay, and (ii) the case of one particle species being infinitely heavy, ${η= 0}$, leading to a localization of the lighter particles in an effective disorder potential. Given these two opposing cases, the dynamics in the case of intermediate mass ratios ${0 < η< 1}$ is of particular interest. To this end, we study the real-time dynamics of pure states featuring a sharp initial non-equilibrium density profile. Relying on the concept of dynamical quantum typicality, the resulting non-equilibrium dynamics can be related to equilibrium correlation functions. Summarizing our main results, we observe that diffusive transport occurs for moderate values of the mass imbalance, and manifests itself in a Gaussian spreading of real-space density profiles and an exponential decay of density modes in momentum space. For stronger imbalances, we provide evidence that transport becomes anomalous on intermediate time scales and, in particular, our results are consistent with the absence of strict localization in the long-time limit for any ${η> 0}$. Based on our numerical analysis, we provide an estimate for the "lifetime" of the effective localization as a function of $η$.
The mass-imbalanced Hubbard model represents a continuous evolution from the Hubbard to the Falicov-Kimball model. We employ dynamical mean field theory and study the paramagnetic metal-insulator transition, which has a very different nature for the two limiting models. Our results indicate that the metal-insulator transition rather resembles that of the Hubbard model as soon as a tiny hopping between the more localized fermions is switched on. At low temperatures we observe a first-order metal-insulator transition and a three peak structure. The width of the central peak is the same for the m…
Constraints in the dynamics of quantum many-body systems can dramatically alter transport properties and relaxation timescales even in the absence of static disorder. Here, we report on the observation of such constrained dynamics arising from the distinct mobility of two species in the one-dimensional mass-imbalanced Fermi-Hubbard model, realized with ultracold ytterbium atoms in a state-dependent optical lattice. By displacing the trap potential and monitoring the subsequent dynamical response of the system, we identify suppressed transport and slow relaxation with a strong dependence on the…
The suppression of antiferromagnetic ordering in geometrically frustrated Hubbard models leads to a variety of exotic quantum phases including quantum spin liquids and chiral states. Here, we focus on the Hubbard model on one of the simplest frustrated lattice geometries, a triangular lattice. Motivated by the recent realization of ultracold fermionic atoms in triangular optical lattices, we study the properties of the triangular-lattice Hubbard model through a Numerical Linked-Cluster Expansion algorithm. We investigate the Mott insulator transition finding a critical interaction $U_c/t = 7.0…
Building on recent solutions of the fermion sign problem for specific models we present two continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo methods for efficient simulation of mass-imbalanced Hubbard models on bipartite lattices at half-filling. For both methods we present the solutions to the fermion sign problem and the algorithms to achieve efficient simulations. As applications, we calculate the dependence of the spin correlation on the mass imbalance in a one-dimensional lattice and study the thermal and quantum phase transitions to an antiferromagnetic Ising long-range ordered state in two dimension…
Unconventional ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the imbalanced kagome-lattice Hubbard model are investigated by the mean-field theory and determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. Due to the asymmetric band structure of kagome lattice, the spin-$z$ ferromagnetic order intrinsically exists in the system, which is first enhanced by the interaction, and then continuously destructed after reaching a maximum at a moderate interaction strength. In contrast, the $xy$-plane ferromagnetism develops only above a critical interaction, which is estimated to be $U_c/t=3.65 \pm 0.05$ by finite-size sca…
We investigate the one-dimensional Hubbard ring with attractive interaction in the presence of imbalanced spin populations by using the exact diagonalization method. The singlet pairing correlation function is found to show spatial oscillations with power-law decay as expected in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. In the strong coupling regime, the system shows an anomalous flux quantization of period h=4e, half of the superconducting flux quantum of h=2e, as recently predicted by mean-field analysis, together with various flux quanta smaller than h=4e. …
We study fermionic superfluidity in strongly anisotropic optical lattices with attractive interactions utilizing the cluster DMFT method, and focusing in particular on the role of non-local quantum fluctuations. We show that non-local quantum fluctuations impact the BCS superfluid transition dramatically. Moreover, we show that exotic superfluid states with delicate order parameter structure, such as the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase driven by spin population imbalance, can emerge even in the presence of such strong fluctuations.
We use time-dependent non-equilibrium dynamical mean-field theory with weak-coupling auxiliary-field continuous time quantum Monte Carlo as an impurity solver to study the thermalization behavior of the mass-imbalanced single-band Hubbard model after a quench of the Coulomb interaction from the non-interacting limit to a finite positive value. By contrast, when the Coulomb interaction in our model is increased under equilibrium conditions, the quasi-particle weight for spin-up and spin-down (the mass imbalance) electrons approach zero simultaneously, indicating the absence of an orbital select…
We investigate the superfluid properties of d-wave pairing symmetry within the Extended Hubbard Model (EHM) in a magnetic field. We analyze the temperature and magnetic field dependencies of the order parameter. We find that in the two-dimensional case, the spatially homogeneous spin polarized superfluidity ($SC(P\neq0)$) is stable in the weak coupling limit, at T=0, as opposed to the s-wave pairing symmetry case in 2D. We construct the ground state phase diagrams both for fixed chemical potential ($μ$) and electron concentration ($n$). Furthermore, we obtain the temperature vs. magnetic field…
We study the interplay between the Hofstadter butterfly, strong interactions and Zeeman field within the mean-field Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory in real space, and explore the ground states of the attractive single-band Hofstadter-Hubbard Hamiltonian on a square lattice, including the exotic possibility of imbalanced vector potentials. We find that the cooperation between the vector potential and superfluid order breaks the spatial symmetry of the system, and flourish stripe-ordered Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like superfluid and supersolid phases that can be distinguished and chara…
A repulsive Hubbard model with both spin-asymmetric hopping (${t_\uparrow\neq t_\downarrow}$) and a staggered potential (of strength $Δ$) is studied in one dimension. The model is a compound of the mass-imbalanced (${t_\uparrow\neq t_\downarrow}$, ${Δ=0}$) and ionic (${t_\uparrow = t_\downarrow}$, ${Δ>0}$) Hubbard models, and may be realized by cold atoms in engineered optical lattices. We use mostly mean-field theory to determine the phases and phase transitions in the ground state for a half-filled band (one particle per site). We find that a period-two modulation of the particle (or charge)…
In order to study an interplay of disorder, correlation, and spin imbalance on antiferromagnetism, we systematically explore the ground state of one-dimensional spin-imbalanced Anderson-Hubbard model by using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We find that disorders localize the antiferromagnetic spin density wave induced by imbalanced fermions and the increase of the disorder magnitude shrinks the areas of the localized antiferromagnetized regions. Moreover, the antiferromagnetism finally disappears above a large disorder. These behaviors are observable in atomic Fermi gases loa…
The late-time dynamics of quantum many-body systems is organized in distinct dynamical universality classes, characterized by their conservation laws and thus by their emergent hydrodynamic transport. Here, we study transport in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with different masses of the two fermionic species. To this end, we develop a quantum Boltzmann approach valid in the limit of weak interactions. We explore the crossover from ballistic to diffusive transport, whose timescale strongly depends on the mass ratio of the two species. For timescales accessible with matrix product operators,…
The ground-state properties of the Hubbard chain with on-site repulsion and anisotropic nearest-neighbor attraction are investigated by means of density matrix renormalization group calculations. The non-local attraction acts between fermions of one spin component only, mimicking the effect of p-wave Feshbach resonances in cold-atom systems. We analyze the onset of itinerant ferromagnetism, pinpointing the critical attraction strength where partially and fully ferromagnetic states occur. In the cold-atom setup, where the two (pseudo) spin populations are separately conserved, ferromagnetism oc…
Using a similarity Hamiltonian renormalization procedure, we determine an effective spin-1/2 representation of the Bose-Hubbard model at half-integer filling and at a finite on-site interaction energy U. By means of bosonization, we are able to recast the effective Hamiltonian as that of a spin-1/2 XXZ magnetic chain with pertinently renormalized coupling and anisotropy parameters. We use this mapping to provide analytical estimates of the correlation functions of the Bose-Hubbard model. We then compare such results with those based on DMRG numerical simulations of the Bose-Hubbard model for v…
We consider two-component one-dimensional quantum gases at special imbalanced commensurabilities which lead to the formation of multimer (multi-particle bound-states) as the dominant order parameter. Luttinger liquid theory supports a mode-locking mechanism in which mass (or velocity) asymmetry is identified as the key ingredient to stabilize such states. While the scenario is valid both in the continuum and on a lattice, the effects of umklapp terms relevant for densities commensurate with the lattice spacing are also mentioned. These ideas are illustrated and confronted with the physics of t…
We study the crossover from the one-dimensional to the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the photoemission spectra of weakly coupled chains. The chains with on-site repulsion are treated using the spin-charge factorized wave function, that is known to provide an essentially exact description of the chain in the strong coupling limit. The hoppings between the chains are considered as a perturbation. We calculate the dynamical spectral function at all energies in the random-phase approximation, by resuming an infinite set of diagrams. Even though the hoppings drive the system from a fractionalize…
Sliced-basis DMRG(sb-DMRG) is used to simulate a chain of hydrogen atoms and to construct low-energy effective Hubbard-like models. The downfolding procedure first involves a change of basis to a set of atom-centered Wannier functions constructed from the natural orbitals of the exact DMRG one-particle density matrix. The Wannier function model is then reduced to a fewer-parameter Hubbard-like model, whose parameters are determined by minimizing the expectation value of the Wannier Hamiltonian in the ground state of the Hubbard Hamiltonian. This indirect variational procedure not only yields c…
Using the Lindblad equation approach, we derive the range of the parameters of an interacting one-dimensional electronic chain connected to two reservoirs in the large bias limit in which an optimal working point (corresponding to a change in the monotonicity of the stationary current as a function of the applied bias) emerges in the nonequilibrium stationary state. In the specific case of the one-dimensional spinless fermionic Hubbard chain, we prove that an optimal working point emerges in the dependence of the stationary current on the coupling between the chain and the reservoirs, both in …
We review the fact that U(1) gauge symmetry enables the mapping of one-dimensional Hubbard chains with Rashba-type spin orbit coupling to renormalized Hubbard Hamiltonians. The existence of the mapping has important consequences for the interpretation of ARPES experiments on one-dimensional chains subject to Rashba spin orbit coupling and can be exploited to check for the applicability of the mapping. We show numerical applications of the mapping and consider the implications for bosonization as well as for the Heisenberg-limit of the Hubbard model. In addition we point out the consequences fo…
The interplay between impurities and interactions is studied in the gapless phase of two-chain Hubbard model in order to see how the screening of impurity potentials due to repulsive interactions in single-chain model will be changed by increasing the number of channels. Renormalization group calculations show that charge stiffness, and hence persistent current, of the two-chain model are less enhanced by interactions than single chain case.
We derive an effective spin Hamiltonian for the one-dimensional half-filled Alternating Hubbard model in the limit of strong on-site repulsion. We show that the effective Hamiltonian is a spin $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chain with asymmetric next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) exchange.
We have studied finite-sized single band Hubbard chains with Fibonacci modulation for half filling within a mean field approximation. The ground state properties, together with the dc conductivity both at zero and non-zero temperatures, are calculated for such quasi-periodic Hubbard chains. While a reduction in the conductivity is found for strong electronic interaction or strong Fibonacci modulation, a competition between these two is observed to enhance the conductivity. The results at finite temperatures also illustrate some interesting features of such finite-sized systems.
We propose a theoretical framework to describe the ladder systems. The N-chain Hubbard model has been studied within the Composite Operator Method. In this scheme of calculations the single-particle Green's function for any number of coupled chains is obtained by solving self-consistently a system of integral equations.
The density-matrix renormalization group is employed to investigate a harmonically-trapped imbalanced Fermi condensate based on a one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model. The obtained density profile shows a flattened population difference of spin-up and spin-down components at the center of the trap, and exhibits phase separation between the condensate and unpaired majority atoms for a certain range of the interaction and population imabalance $P$. The two-particle density matrix reveals that the sign of the order parameter changes periodically, demonstrating the realization of the Fulde-Fer…
We examine the free energy and the thermodynamic properties in the three-chain Hubbard model for Ta2NiSe5 to clarify the phase transitions between the uniform and the FFLO excitonic states which are expected to be observed in Ta2NiSe5 under high pressure.
The boundary effects in the open Hubbard chain with boundary fields are studied. The boundary string solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations that give rise to a wave functions localized at the boundary and exponentially decreasing away from the boundary are provided. In particular, it is shown that the correct ground state of the model at half-filling contains the boundary strings.
Exact ground states of interacting electrons on the diamond Hubbard chain in a magnetic field are constructed which exhibit a wide range of properties such as flat-band ferromagnetism and correlation induced metallic, half-metallic or insulating behavior. The properties of these ground states can be tuned by changing the magnetic flux, local potentials, or electron density.
We derive an effective spin Hamiltonian for the one-dimensional half-filled tetramerized ionic-Hubbard model in the limit of strong on-site repulsion. We show that the effective Hamiltonian which describes the low-energy spin sector of the model is a spin S=1/2 Heisenberg Hamiltonian with alternating nearest-neighbour exchange.
We study interplay of electronic correlation, randomness and dimensionality effects in half-filled random Hubbard chains weakly coupled via an interchain one-particle hopping. Based on the two-loop renormalization-group approach, phase diagrams are given in terms of temperature vs. strengths of the intrachain electron-electron umklapp scattering, the random scattering and the interchain one-particle hopping.
We study the Luttinger-liquid parameter $K_ρ$ of the Hubbard chain and the Hubbard ladder models by the ordinary perturbation method combined with the Luttinger-liquid relation. According to the Luttinger-liquid relation, the critical exponent $K_ρ$ is related to the charge susceptibility $χ_c$ and the Drude weight D by $ K\sbρ={1/2}(πχ_c D)^{1/2}$. By calculating these quantities with the perturbation method, we obtain $K_ρ$ at the first-order analytically and up to the second-order numerically. We compare these results with results of the Bethe ansatz for the Hubbard chain and that of the nu…
We investigate the spin/charge transport in a one-dimensional strongly correlated system by using the adaptive time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group method. The model we consider is a non-half-filled Hubbard chain with a bond of controllable spin-dependent electron hoppings, which is found to cause a blockade of spin current with little influence on charge current. We have considered (1) the spread of a wave packet of both spin and charge in the Hubbard chain and (2) the spin and charge currents induced by a spin-dependent voltage bias that is applied to the ideal leads attached …
We discuss current carrying non-equilibrium steady state of an open fermionic Hubbard chain that is strongly driven by markovian incoherent processes localized at the chain ends. An explicit form of exact many-body density operator for any value of the coupling parameter is presented. The structure of a matrix product form of the solution is encoded in terms of a novel diagrammatic technique which should allow for generalization to other integrable non-equillibrium models.
We reexamine the dimerization, the charge and the spin gaps of a half-filled Peierls-Hubbard chain by means of the incremental expansion technique. Our numerical findings are in significant quantitative conflict with recently obtained results by M. Sugiura and Y. Suzumura [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. v. 71 (2002) 697] based on a bosonization and a renormalization group method, especially with respect to the charge gap. Their approach seems to be valid only in the weakly correlated case.
We derive an effective spin Hamiltonian for the one-dimensional half-filled asymmetric ionic Hubbard model with alternating on-site interaction in the limit of strong repulsion. It is shown that the effective Hamiltonian is that of a spin $S=1/2$ anisotropic $XXZ$ Heisenberg chain with alternating next-nearest-neighbor and three-spin couplings in the presence of a uniform and a staggered magnetic field.
The role of Klein factors is investigated for the bosonized Hamiltonian of the dimerized Hubbard model. Contrary to previous approaches we take into account their number changing property, i.e. we do not replace them by Majorana fermions. We show how to treat Klein factors in the framework of the self-consistent harmonic approximation, both for finite systems and in the thermodynamic limit.
We have calculated the charge gap and spin gap for the two-chain Hubbard model as a function of the on-site Coulomb interaction and the interchain hopping amplitude. We used the density matrix renormalization group method and developed a method to calculate separately the gaps numerically for the symmetric and antisymmetric modes with respect to the exchange of the chain indices. We have found very different behaviors for the weak and strong interaction cases. Our calculated phase diagram is compared to the one obtained by Balents and Fisher using the weak coupling renormalization group techni…
We calculate the local correlation functions of charge and spin for the one-chain and two-chain Hubbard model using the density matrix renormalization group method and the recursion technique. Keeping only finite number of states we get good accuracy for the low energy excitations. We study the charge and spin gaps, bandwidths and weights of the spectra for various values of the on-site Coulomb interaction U and the electron filling. In the low energy part, the local correlation functions are different for the charge and spin. The bandwidths are proportional to t for the charge and J for the s…
We investigate the Hubbard chains network model defined on corner-sharing tetrahedra (the pyrochlore lattice) which is a possible microscopic model for the heavy fermion state of LiV_2O_4. Based upon this model, we can explain transport, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of LiV_2O_4. We calculate the spin susceptibility, and the specific heat coefficient, exploiting the Bethe ansatz exact solution of the 1D Hubbard model and bosonization method. The results are quite consistent with experimental observations. We obtain the large specific heat coefficient $γ\sim 222 {\rm mJ/mol K^2}$.
We consider the optical conductivity in the one dimensional Hubbard model in the metallic phase close to half filling. In this regime most of the spectral weight is located at frequencies above an energy scale $E_{\rm opt}$ that tends towards the optical gap in the Mott insulating phase for vanishing doping. Using the Bethe Ansatz we relate $E_{\rm opt}$ to thresholds of particular kinds of excitations in the Hubbard model. We then employ a mobile impurity models to analyze the optical conductivity for frequencies slightly above these thresholds. This entails generalizing mobile impurity model…
Transport through a Hubbard chain of size N (=1,2,3,...) connected to reservoirs is studied at T = 0 in an electron-hole symmetric case based on the second-order perturbation theory in U. The result shows a typical even-odd property corresponding to a Kondo or Mott-Hubbard physics. In this report, specifically, we study the dependence of the conductance on the coupling between the chain and reservoirs, which was not examined in detail in our previous report [Phy. Rev. B 59, 12240 (1999)].
The canonical transformation diagonalizing the one-particle tight binding Hamiltonian for an alternating chain with two non-equivalent sites per unit cell has been used to introduce the Hubbard-like interactions (on-site, inter-site, bond-site and intra-bond) in the corresponding two-band model. The considerations have been restricted to the particular case, suggested by the undistorted 3/4-filled $CuO_{3}$ chain, where the alternating structure comes only from non-equal on-site atomic energies and the gap between the two bands is sufficiently large. The renormalization group method has been t…
A Bethe Ansatz solution of a (modified) Hubbard chain with a Kondo impurity of arbitrary spin S at a highly symmetric line of parameter space is proposed and explored. Our results confirm the existence of a strong-coupling (line of) fixed-point(s) with ferromagnetic Kondo coupling as first hypothetized by Furusaki and Nagaosa on the basis of perturbative renormalization group calculations. For on-site Hubbard repulsion and ferromagnetic Kondo exchange, the ground state has spin S-1/2, i.e., is a singlet when S=1/2. The contributions of the impurity to the magnetic susceptibility and low-temper…
The one-dimensional Hubbard model at half-filling is studied in the framework of the Composite Operator Method using a static approximation. A solution characterized by strong antiferromagnetic correlations and a gap for any nonzero on-site interaction U is found. The corresponding ground-state energy, double occupancy and specific heat are in excellent agreement with those obtained within the Bethe Ansatz. These results show that the Composite Operator Method is an appropriate framework for the half-filled Hubbard chain and can be applied to evaluate properties, like the correlation functions…
We study the electronic transport in an infinite one-dimensional Hubbard chain, driven by a homogeneous electric field. The physical chain is coupled to fermion bath chains, in order to account for dissipation and to prevent the occurrence of Bloch Oscillations. The steady state current is computed in the frame of Keldysh Green's functions in Cluster Perturbation Theory. The current characteristics are dominated by resonant-tunneling-like structures, which can be traced back to Wannier-Stark resonances due to anti-ferromagnetic correlations. The same current characteristic occurs in a non-inte…
Physical nature of dimensional crossovers in weakly coupled Hubbard chains and ladders has been discussed within the framework of the perturbative renormalization-group approach. The difference between these two cases originates from different universality classes which the corresponding isolated systems belong to.
We have studied the influence of nearest-neighbor (NN) repulsion on the low frequency phase diagram of a quarter-filled Hubbard-Holstein chain. The NN repulsion term induces the apparition of two new long range ordered phases (one $4k_F$ CDW for positive $U_{eff} = U-2g^2/ω$ and one $2k_F$ CDW for negative $U_{eff}$) that did not exist in the V=0 phase diagram. These results are put into perspective with the newly observed charge ordered phases in organic conductors and an interpretation of their origin in terms of electron-molecular vibration coupling is suggested.
We obtain the quantum phase diagram of the Hubbard chain with alternating on-site energy at half filling. The model is relevant for the ferroelectric perovskites and organic mixed-stack donor-acceptor crystals. For any values of the parameters, the band insulator is separated from the Mott insulator by a dimer phase. The boundaries are determined accurately by crossing of excited levels with particular discrete symmetries. We show that these crossings coincide with jumps of charge and spin Berry phases with a clear geometrical meaning.
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the half-filled one-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping using the Density-Matrix Renormalization Group technique as well as an unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation. We find commensurate and incommensurate disordered magnetic insulating phases and a spin-gapped metallic phase in addition to the one-dimensional Heisenberg phase. At large on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$, we make contact with the phase diagram of the frustrated Heisenberg chain, which has spin-gapped phases for sufficiently large frustration. For weak $U$, …
Low energy properties of half-filled Fibonacci Hubbard models are studied by weak coupling renormalization group and density matrix renormalization group method. In the case of diagonal modulation, weak Coulomb repulsion is irrelevant and the system behaves as a free Fibonacci chain, while for strong Coulomb repulsion, the charge sector is a Mott insulator and the spin sector behaves as a uniform Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. The off-diagonal modulation always drives the charge sector to a Mott insulator and the spin sector to a Fibonacci antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain.
The ground state and thermodynamic properties of an asymmetric diamond Ising--Hubbard chain with the on-site electron-electron attraction has been considered. The problem can be solved exactly using the decoration-iteration transformation. In the case of the antiferromagnetic Ising interaction, the influence of this attraction on the ground state and the temperature dependences of the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat has been studied.
The momentum and energy dependence of the weight distribution in the vicinity of the one-electron spectral-function singular branch lines of the 1D Hubbard model is studied for all values of the electronic density and on-site repulsion $U$. To achieve this goal we use the recently introduced pseudofermion dynamical theory. Our predictions agree quantitatively for the whole momentum and energy bandwidth with the peak dispersions observed by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in the quasi-1D organic conductor TTF-TCNQ.
