We demonstrate a novel dispersion-scan (d-scan) scheme for single-shot temporal characterization of ultrashort laser pulses. The novelty of this method relies on the use of a highly dispersive crystal featuring antiparallel nonlinear domains with a random distribution and size. This crystal, capable of generating a transverse second-harmonic signal, acts simultaneously as the dispersive element and the nonlinear medium of the d-scan device. The resulting in-line architecture makes the technique very simple and robust, allowing the acquisition of single-shot d-scan traces in real time. In addition, the technique can be further simplified by avoiding the need of dispersion pre-compensation. The retrieved pulses are in very good agreement with independent FROG measurements. We also apply the new single-shot d-scan to a TW-class laser equipped with a programmable pulse shaper, obtaining an excellent agreement between the applied and the d-scan retrieved dispersions.
We present a retrieval algorithm based on generalized projections for ultrashort pulse characterization using dispersion scan (d-scan). The new algorithm is tested on several simulated cases and in two different experimental cases in the few-cycle regime. The proposed algorithm is much faster and leads to a drastic reduction of retrieval times, but performs less robust in the retrieval of noisy d-scan traces compared to the standard algorithm.
The dispersion scan (d-scan) technique has emerged as a simple-to-implement characterization method for ultrashort laser pulses. D-scan traces are intuitive to interpret and retrieval algorithms that are both fast and robust have been developed to obtain the spectral phase and the temporal pulse profile. Here, we give a review of the d-scan technique based on second harmonic generation. We describe and compare recent implementations for the characterization of few- and multi-cycle pulses as well as two different approaches for recording d-scan traces in single-shot, thus showing the versatilit…
We demonstrate a novel, single-shot ultrafast diagnostic, based on the dispersion-scan (d-scan) technique. In this implementation, rather than scanning wedges to vary the dispersion as in standard d-scan, the pulse to be measured experiences a spatially varying amount of dispersion in a Littrow prism. The resulting beam is then imaged into a second-harmonic generation crystal and an imaging spectrometer is used to measure the two-dimensional trace, which is analyzed using the d-scan retrieval algorithm. We compare the single-shot implementation with the standard d-scan for the measurement of s…
Delivering femtosecond laser light in the focal plane of a high numerical aperture microscope objective is still a challenge, despite significant developments in the generation of ultrashort pulses. One of the most popular techniques, used to correct phase distortions resulting from propagation through transparent media, is the multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scan (MIIPS). The accuracy of MIIPS however is limited when higher order phase distortions are present. Here we introduce an improvement, called Gated-MIIPS, which avoids shortcomings of MIIPS, reduces the influence of higher or…
Industrial use of ultrashort-pulse surface structuring would significantly increase by an effective utilization of the average laser powers available currently. However, the unexplained degradation of surfaces processed with numerous pulses at high average laser power makes this difficult. Based on a systematic experimental study, the structure formation underlying such surface degradation was investigated. We presented a hierarchical structural formation model that bridges the gap between laser-induced periodic surface structures and surface degradation. Contrary to expectations based on prev…
In most applications of ultrashort pulse lasers, temporal compressors are used to achieve a desired pulse duration in a target or sample, and precise temporal characterization is important. The dispersion-scan (d-scan) pulse characterization technique usually involves using glass wedges to impart variable, well-defined amounts of dispersion to the pulses, while measuring the spectrum of a nonlinear signal produced by those pulses. This works very well for broadband few-cycle pulses, but longer, narrower bandwidth pulses are much more difficult to measure this way. Here we demonstrate the conce…
By using a reductive perturbation method, we derive from Maxwell-Bloch equations a cubic generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation for ultrashort spatiotemporal optical pulse propagation in cubic (Kerr-like) media without the use of the slowly varying envelope approximation. We calculate the collapse threshold for the propagation of few-cycle spatiotemporal pulses described by the generic cubic generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation by a direct numerical method and compare it to analytic results based on a rigorous virial theorem. Besides, typical evolution of the spectrum (integrated o…
We investigate the interplay of diffraction and nonlinear effects during propagation of very short light pulses. Adapting the factorization approach to the problem at hand by keeping the transverse-derivative terms apart from the residual nonlinear contributions we derive an unidirectional propagation equation valid for weak dispersion and reducing to the slowly-evolving-wave-approximation for the case of paraxial rays. Comparison of numerical simulation results for the two equations shows pronounced differences when self-focusing plays important role. We devote special attention to modelling …
We present a common pulse retrieval algorithm (COPRA) that can be used for a broad category of ultrashort laser pulse measurement schemes including frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG), interferometric FROG, dispersion scan, time domain ptychography, and pulse shaper assisted techniques such as multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scan (MIIPS). We demonstrate its properties in comprehensive numerical tests and show that it is fast, reliable and accurate in the presence of Gaussian noise. For FROG it outperforms retrieval algorithms based on generalized projections and ptychography. Fu…
We present a detailed study of the fields and propagation characteristics around the focus of ultrashort radially-polarized laser beams (RPLBs) having low-order spatio-temporal couplings (STCs). The three STCs considered are the focusing of the different frequencies to different positions along the longitudinal coordinate, the focusing of the frequencies to different positions along one transverse coordinate, and the beam waist or Rayleigh range having a power-law frequency dependence. The STCs considered are deemed low-order because they are generally linear in frequency. The combination of a…
We demonstrate the generation of 100-μJ-level multicolored femtosecond pulses based on a single-stage cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) process in a thin glass plate. The generated high-energy CFWM signals can shift the central wavelength and have well-enhanced temporal contrast because of the third-order nonlinear process. They are innovatively used as clean sampling pulses of a cross-correlator for single-shot temporal contrast measurement. With a simple home-made setup, the proof-of-principle experimental results demonstrate the single-shot cross-correlator with dynamic range of 1010, tempor…
We investigate, through simulation, the evolution of polarization states during atmospheric propagation of high power, ultrashort laser pulses. A delayed rotational response model handling arbitrary, transverse polarization couples both the amplitude and phase of the polarization states. We find that, while circularly and linearly polarized pulses maintain their polarization, elliptically polarized pulses become depolarized due to energy equilibration between left and right circularly polarized states. The depolarization can be detrimental to remote radiation generation schemes and obscures ti…
We present a new variant of dispersion scan (d-scan) based on surface third-harmonic generation (STHG) and a ptychographic algorithm taylored for full retrieval (amplitude and phase) of broadband laser pulses. We demonstrate the technique by temporally measuring and compressing few-cycle pulses with 7 fs and 2.5 nJ from a Ti:Sapphire oscillator, using a sapphire window as the nonlinear medium. The results are in very good agreement with standard second-harmonic d-scan measurements based on a nonlinear crystal. The intrinsically broadband and phase-matching-independent nature of STHG make this …
Spin waves in magnetic microresonators are at the core of modern magnonics. Here we demonstrate a new method of tunable excitation of different spin wave modes in magnetic microdisks by using a train of laser pulses coming at a repetition rate higher than the decay rate of spin precession. The microdisks are etched in a transparent bismuth iron garnet film and the light pulses influence the spins nonthermally through the inverse Faraday effect. The high repetition rate of the laser stimulus of 10 GHz establishes an interplay between the spin wave resonances in the frequency and momentum domain…
We present a microcavity structure with a shifted photonic stop-band to enable efficient non-resonant injection of a polariton condensate with spectrally broad femtosecond pulses. The concept is demonstrated theoretically and confirmed experimentally for a planar GaAs/AlGaAs multilayer heterostructure pumped with ultrashort near-infrared pulses while photoluminescence is collected to monitor the optically injected polariton density. As the excitation wavelength is scanned, a regime of polariton condensation can be reached in our structure at a consistently lower fluence threshold than in a sta…
We have successfully functionalized 5 layers of TCVD-grown graphene by photoassisted transfer hydrogenation reaction with formic acid, in order to increase its nonlinear optical response and laser-induced damage resilience. Using the functionalized graphene samples, we were able to fully characterize sub-10 fs ultrashort laser pulses using THG dispersion-scan, with results that are in excellent agreement with the ones obtained with pristine graphene samples.
We shape fs optical pulses and deliver them in a single spatial mode to the input of a multimode fiber. The pulse is shaped in time such that at the output of the multimode fiber an ultrashort pulse appears at a predefined focus. Our result shows how to raster scan an ultrashort pulse at the output of a stiff piece of square-core step-index multimode fiber and in this way the potential for making a nonlinear fluorescent image of the scene behind the fiber, while the connection to the multimode fiber can be established via a thin and flexible single-mode fiber. The experimental results match ou…
We studied both theoretically and experimentally the intensity distribution of a Gaussian laser beam when it was focussed by an objective lens with its numerical-aperture (NA) up to 0.95. Approximate formulae for full widths at half maximum (FWHM) of the intensity distribution at focus were derived for very large and very small initial beam waists with respect to the entrance pupil radius of the objective lens. In experiments the energy flux through a 0.5 micron pinhole was measured for various pinhole positions. We found that the FWHM's at focus in the transverse and the longitudinal directio…
We present a new technique that we have defined as the z-scan confocal method to determine the absolute location and size of the focal spot in a tight focused ultrashort laser pulse. The method permits to accurately position a target in the focal spot with a fast response. The technique is designed to help to automatize the location of an overdense target in focus in a laser plasma experiment. The method allows for a fast localization of the focal position and the relative motion of the target with respect to it. As an example of the capacities we measure the defocusing of a fast rotating disc…
An optical fast-scan delay exploiting the near-collinear interaction between a train of ultrashort optical pulses and an acoustic wave propagating in a birefringent crystal is introduced. In combination with a femtosecond Er:fiber laser, the scheme is shown to delay few-fs pulses by up to 6 ps with a precision of 15 as. A resolution of 5 fs is obtained for a single sweep at a repetition rate of 34 kHz. This value can be improved to 39 as for multiple scans at a total rate of 0.3 kHz.
Dispersion scan is a self-referenced measurement technique for ultrashort pulses. Similar to frequency-resolved optical gating, the dispersion scan technique records the dependence of nonlinearly generated spectra as a function of a parameter. For the two mentioned techniques, these parameters are the delay and the dispersion, respectively. While dispersion scan seems to offer a number of potential advantages over other characterization methods, in particular for measuring few-cycle pulses, retrieval of the spectral phase from the measured traces has so far mostly relied on the Nelder-Mead alg…
We present a systematic study on linear propagation of ultrashort laser pulses in media with dispersion, dispersionless media and vacuum. The applied method of amplitude envelopes gives the opportunity to estimate the limits of slowly warring amplitude approximation and to describe an amplitude integro-differential equation, governing the propagation of optical pulses in single cycle regime. The well known slowly varying amplitude equation and the amplitude equation for vacuum are written in dimensionless form. Three parameters are obtained defining different linear regimes of the optical puls…

Using femtosecond laser pulses at 800 and 400 nm, we characterize the formation of underdense channels in air generated by laser filamentation at the millijoule energy level by means of transverse interferometry. We find that using tight focusing conditions, filamentation generates a shock wave and that the resulting low-density channel lasts for more than 90 ms. Comparison of these results with hydrodynamic simulations using an Eulerian hydrodynamic code gives an good agreement and allows us to estimate the initial gas peak temperature at $\sim$ 1000 K. The influence of experimental parameter…
Arbitrary distributions of radiant exposure may be written by transversely scanning a single known spatially-random screen that is normally illuminated by spatially but not necessarily temporally uniform radiation or matter wave fields. The arbitrariness, of the written pattern of radiant exposure, holds up to both (i) a spatial resolution that is dictated by the characteristic transverse length scale of the illuminated spatially random screen, and (ii) a background term that grows linearly with the number of random-illumination patterns. Two classes of the method are developed. The former ass…
Length and g-factor are fundamental parameters that characterize optical cavities. We developed a technique to measure these parameters in-situ by determining the frequency spacing between the resonances of fundamental and spatial modes of an optical cavity. Two laser beams are injected into the cavity, and their relative frequency is scanned by a phase-lock loop, while the cavity is locked to either laser. The measurement of the amplitude of their beat note in transmission reveals the resonances of the longitudinal and the transverse modes of the cavity and their spacing. This method proves p…
A laser is based on the electromagnetic modes of its resonator, which provides the feedback required for oscillation. Enormous progress has been made in controlling the interactions of longitudinal modes in lasers with a single transverse mode. For example, the field of ultrafast science has been built on lasers that lock many longitudinal modes together to form ultrashort light pulses. However, coherent superposition of many longitudinal and transverse modes in a laser has received little attention. The multitude of disparate frequency spacings, strong dispersions, and complex nonlinear inter…
Ultrashort electron pulses are crucial for time-resolved electron diffraction and microscopy of fundamental light-matter interaction. In this work, we study experimentally and theoretically the generation and characterization of attosecond electron pulses by optical-field-driven compression and streaking at dielectric or absorbing interaction elements. The achievable acceleration and deflection gradient depends on the laser-electron angle, the laser's electric and magnetic field directions and the foil orientation. Electric and magnetic fields have similar contributions to the final effect and…
