We study experimentally the interaction of nonlinear internal waves in a stratified fluid confined in a trapezoidal tank. The set-up has been designed to produce internal wave turbulence from monochromatic and polychromatic forcing through three processes. The first is a linear transfer in wavelength obtained by wave reflection on inclined slopes, leading to an internal wave attractor which has a broad wavenumber spectrum. Second is the broad banded time-frequency spectrum of the trapezoidal geometry, as shown by the impulse response of the system. The third one is a nonlinear transfer in frequencies and wavevectors via triadic interactions, which results at large forcing amplitudes in a power law decay of the wavenumber power spectrum. This first experimental spectrum of internal wave turbulence displays a $k^{-3}$ behavior.
Fluids with internal microstructure like dense suspensions, biological and polymer added fluids, are commonly found in the turbulent regime in many applications. Their flow is extremely difficult to be studied as microstructure complexity and Reynolds number increase, even nowadays. This bottleneck is novelty and efficiently treated here by the micropolar theory. Our findings support that when denser microstructure occurs turbulence is intensified by the chaotic rotation of internal fluid's elements. Unlike in Newtonian fluids, shear stress is now decreased, and viscous and microstructure inte…
Recent developments of the weak turbulence theory applied to internal waves exhibit a power-law solution of the kinetic energy equation close to the oceanic Garrett \& Munk spectrum, confirming weakly nonlinear wave interactions as a likely explanation of the observed oceanic spectra. However, finite-size effects can hinder wave interactions in bounded domains, and observations often differ from theoretical predictions. This article studies the dynamical regimes experimentally developing in a stratified fluid forced by internal gravity waves in a pentagonal domain. We find that by changing the…
We investigate experimentally stratified turbulence forced by waves. Stratified turbulence is present in oceans and it is expected to be dominated by nonlinear interaction of internal gravity waves as described by the Garrett & Munk spectrum. In order to reach turbulent regimes dominated by stratification we use the Coriolis facility in Grenoble (France) which large size enables us to reach regimes with both low Froude number and large Reynolds number. Stratification is obtained by using vertically linearly varying salt concentration and we force large scale waves in a $6\times6\times 1$ m$^3$…
Stratified turbulence shows scale- and direction-dependent anisotropy and the coexistence of weak turbulence of internal gravity waves and strong turbulence of eddies. Straightforward application of standard analyses developed in isotropic turbulence sometimes masks important aspects of the anisotropic turbulence. To capture detailed structures of the energy distribution in the wave-number space, it is indispensable to examine the energy distribution with non-integrated spectra by fixing the codimensional wave-number component or in the two-dimensional domain spanned by both the horizontal and…
We have advanced the energy and flux budget (EFB) turbulence closure theory that takes into account a two-way coupling between internal gravity waves (IGW) and the shear-free stably stratified turbulence. This theory is based on the budget equation for the total (kinetic plus potential) energy of IGW, the budget equations for the kinetic and potential energies of fluid turbulence, and turbulent fluxes of potential temperature for waves and fluid flow. The waves emitted at a certain level, propagate upward, and the losses of wave energy cause the production of turbulence energy. We demonstrate …
We investigate the stability of stratified fluid layers undergoing homogeneous and periodic tidal deformation. We first introduce a local model which allows to study velocity and buoyancy fluctuations in a Lagrangian domain periodically stretched and sheared by the tidal base flow. While keeping the key physical ingredients only, such a model is efficient to simulate planetary regimes where tidal amplitudes and dissipation are small. With this model, we prove that tidal flows are able to drive parametric subharmonic resonances of internal waves, in a way reminiscent of the elliptical instabili…
We analyze analytically and numerically the scale invariant stationary solution to the internal wave kinetic equation. Our analysis of the resonant energy transfers shows that the leading order contributions are given (i) by triads with extreme scale separation and (ii) by triads of waves that are quasi-colinear in the horizontal plane. The contributions from other types of triads is found to be subleading. We use the modified scale invariant limit of the Garrett and Munk spectrum of internal waves to calculate the magnitude of the energy flux towards high wave numbers in both the vertical and…
By characterising the hydrodynamic stresses generated by statistically homogeneous and isotropic turbulence in rigid aggregates, we estimate theoretically the rate of turbulent breakup of colloidal aggregates and the size distribution of the formed fragments. The adopted method combines Direct Numerical Simulation of the turbulent field with a Discrete Element Method based on Stokesian dynamics. In this way, not only the mechanics of the aggregate is modelled in detail, but the internal stresses are evaluated while the aggregate is moving in the turbulent flow. We examine doublets and cluster-…
We study the dynamics and properties of a turbulent flame, formed in the presence of subsonic, high-speed, homogeneous, isotropic Kolmogorov-type turbulence in an unconfined system. Direct numerical simulations are performed with Athena-RFX, a massively parallel, fully compressible, high-order, dimensionally unsplit, reactive-flow code. A simplified reaction-diffusion model represents a stoichiometric H2-air mixture. The system being modeled represents turbulent combustion with the Damkohler number Da = 0.05 and with the turbulent velocity at the energy injection scale 30 times larger than the…
We revisit the problem of how energy transfer through the turbulent cascade operates in compressible hydrodynamic turbulence. In general, there is no conservative compressible cascade since the kinetic and internal energy reservoirs can exchange energy through pressure dilatation. Moreover, statistically stationary turbulence at high Mach number can only be maintained in nearly isothermal gas, i.e., if excess heat produced by shock compression and kinetic energy dissipation is continuously removed from the system. We mimic this process by a linear cooling term in numerical simulations of turbu…
We have found that in two-dimensional Kolmogorov flow a single spatially-localized turbulence (SLT) exists stably and travels with a constant speed on average switching the moving direction randomly and intermittently for moderate values of control parameters: Reynolds number and the flow rate. We define the coarse-grained position and velocity of an SLT and separate the motion of the SLT from its internal turbulent dynamics by introducing a co-moving frame. The switching process of an SLT represented by the coarse-grained velocity seems to be a random telegraph signal. Focusing on the asymmet…
We advance our prior energy- and flux-budget turbulence closure model (Zilitinkevich et al., 2007, 2008) for the stably stratified atmospheric flows and extend it accounting for additional vertical flux of momentum and additional productions of turbulent kinetic energy, turbulent potential energy (TPE) and turbulent flux of potential temperature due to large-scale internal gravity waves (IGW). Main effects of IGW are following: the maximal value of the flux Richardson number (universal constant 0.2-0.25 in the no-IGW regime) becomes strongly variable. In the vertically homogeneous stratificati…
We derive equations for the mean entropy and the mean internal energy in the low-Mach-number temperature stratified turbulence (i.e., for turbulent convection or stably stratified turbulence), and show that turbulent flux of entropy is given by ${\bf F}_s=\overlineρ \, \overline{{\bf u} s}$, where $\overlineρ$ is the mean fluid density, $s$ are fluctuations of entropy and overbars denote averaging over an ensemble of turbulent velocity field, ${\bf u}$. We demonstrate that the turbulent flux of entropy is different from the turbulent convective flux, ${\bf F}_c=\overline{T} \, \overlineρ \, \o…

With the aim of assessing internal wave-driven mixing in the ocean, we develop a new technique for direct numerical simulations of stratified turbulence. Since the spatial scale of oceanic internal gravity waves is typically much larger than that of turbulence, fully incorporating both in a model would require a high computational cost, and is therefore out of our scope. Alternatively, we cut out a small domain periodically distorted by an unresolved large-scale internal wave and locally simulate the energy cascade to the smallest scales. In this model, even though the Froude number of the out…
This study starts with balances deduced by Baumert and Peters (2004, 2005) from results of stratified-shear experiments made in channels and wind tunnels by Itsweire (1984) and Rohr and Van Atta (1987), and of free-decay experiments in a resting stratified tank by Dickey and Mellor (1980). Using a modification of Canuto's (2002) ideas on turbulence and waves, these balances are merged with an (internal) gravity-wave energy balance presented for the open ocean by Gregg (1989), without mean-flow shear. The latter was augmented by a linear (viscous) friction term. Gregg's wave-energy source is in…
Internal gravity waves (hereafter IGWs) are known as one of the candidates for explaining the angular velocity profile in the Sun and in solar-type main-sequence and evolved stars, due to their role in the transport of angular momentum. Our bringing concerns critical layers, a process poorly explored in stellar physics, defined as the location where the local relative frequency of a given wave to the rotational frequency of the fluid tends to zero (i.e that corresponds to co-rotation resonances). IGW propagate through stably-stratified radiative regions, where they extract or deposit angular m…
In this work, we report the excitation of inertial waves in a librating sphere even for libration frequencies where these waves are not directly forced. This spontaneous generation comes from the localized turbulence induced by the centrifugal instabilities in the Ekman boundary layer near the equator and does not depend on the libration frequency. We characterize the key features of these inertial waves in analogy with previous studies of the generation of internal waves in stratified flows from localized turbulent patterns. In particular, the temporal spectrum exhibits preferred values of ex…
The high-frequency limit of the Garrett and Munk spectrum of internal waves in the ocean and the observed deviations from it are shown to form a pattern consistent with the predictions of wave turbulence theory. In particular, the high frequency limit of the Garrett and Munk spectrum constitutes an {\it exact} steady state solution of the corresponding kinetic equation.
The atmosphere is a nonlinear stratified fluid in which internal gravity waves are present. These waves interact with the flow, resulting in wave turbulence that displays important differences with the turbulence observed in isotropic and homogeneous flows. We study numerically the role of these waves and their interaction with the large scale flow, consisting of vertically sheared horizontal winds. We calculate their space and time resolved energy spectrum (a four-dimensional spectrum), and show that most of the energy is concentrated along a dispersion relation that is Doppler shifted by the…
We report the observation of capillary wave turbulence on the surface of a fluid layer in a low-gravity environment. In such conditions, the fluid covers all the internal surface of the spherical container which is submitted to random forcing. The surface wave amplitude displays power-law spectrum over two decades in frequency, corresponding to wavelength from $mm$ to a few $cm$. This spectrum is found in roughly good agreement with wave turbulence theory. Such a large scale observation without gravity waves has never been reached during ground experiments. When the forcing is periodic, two-di…
One of the pivotal questions in the dynamics of the oceans is related to the cascade of mechanical energy in the abyss and its contribution to mixing. Here, we propose internal wave attractors in the large amplitude regime as a unique self-consistent experimental and numerical setup that models a cascade of triadic interactions transferring energy from large-scale monochro-matic input to multi-scale internal wave motion. We also provide signatures of a discrete wave turbulence framework for internal waves. Finally, we show how beyond this regime, we have a clear transition to a regime of small…
Stratified flows forced by internal waves similar to those obtained in the Coriolis platform (LEGI, Grenoble, France) \cite{Savaro2020} are studied by pseudospectral triply-periodic simulations. The experimental forcing mechanism consisting in large oscillating vertical panels is mimicked by a penalization method. The analysis of temporal and spatiotemporal spectra reveals that the flow for the strongest forcing in the experiments is composed of two superposed large and quasi-steady horizontal vortices, of internal waves in box modes and of much weaker waves outside the modes. Spatial spectra …
We report numerical investigations of wave turbulence in a vibrating plate. The possibility to implement advanced measurement techniques and long time numerical simulations makes this system extremely valuable for wave turbulence studies. The purely 2D character of dynamics of the elastic plate makes it much simpler to handle compared to much more complex 3D physical systems that are typical of geo- and astrophysical issues (ocean surface or internal waves, magnetized plasmas or strongly rotating and/or stratified flows). When the forcing is small the observed wave turbulence is consistent wit…
Here we show that there exist internal gravity waves that are inherently unstable, that is, they cannot exist in nature for a long time. The instability mechanism is a one-way (irreversible) harmonic-generation resonance that permanently transfers the energy of an internal wave to its higher harmonics. We show that, in fact, there are countably infinite number of such unstable waves. For the harmonic-generation resonance to take place, nonlinear terms in the free surface boundary condition play a pivotal role, and the instability does not obtain for a linearly-stratified fluid if a simplified …
We use a coarse-graining approach to prove that inter-scale transfer of kinetic energy in compressible turbulence is dominated by local interactions. Locality here means that interactions between disparate scales decay at least as fast as a power-law function of the scale-disparity ratio. In particular, our results preclude transfer of kinetic energy from large-scales directly to dissipation scales, such as into shocks, in the limit of high Reynolds number turbulence as is commonly believed. The results hold in broad generality, at any Mach number, for any equation of state, and without the re…
We investigated experimentally stably stratified turbulent flows in a lid driven cavity with a non-zero vertical mean temperature gradient in order to identify the parameters governing the mean and turbulent flows and to understand their effects on the momentum and heat transfer. We found that the mean velocity patterns (e.g., the form and the sizes of the large-scale circulations) depend strongly on the degree of the temperature stratification. In the case of strong stable stratification, the strong turbulence region is located in the vicinity of the main large-scale circulation. We detected …
We calculate the net energy per unit time exchanged between two sets of modes in a generic system governed by a three-wave kinetic equation. Our calculation is based on the property of detailed energy conservation of the triadic resonant interactions. In a first application to isotropic systems, we rederive the standard formula for the energy flux as a particular case for adjacent sets. We then exploit the new formalism to quantify the level of locality of the energy transfers in the example of surface capillary waves. A second application to anisotropic wave systems expands the currently avai…

We demonstrate via direct numerical simulations that a periodic, oscillating mean flow spontaneously develops from turbulently generated internal waves. We consider a minimal physical model where the fluid self-organizes in a convective layer adjacent to a stably stratified one. Internal waves are excited by turbulent convective motions, then nonlinearly interact to produce a mean flow reversing on timescales much longer than the waves' period. Our results demonstrate for the first time that the three-scale dynamics due to convection, waves, and mean flow is generic and hence can occur in many…

General scenario of turbulence theory is proposed and applied to streaky wall-bounded turbulence. This scenario introduces a new field of transverse waves. Significance of the theory rests on a mathematical theorem associated with the conservation law of current flux, expressed in a form of 4d physical space-time representation, which predicts a system of Maxwell-type equation and supports transverse waves traveling with a phase speed c_t. In regard to the streaky wall flows, there exist both dynamical mechanism and energy channel which excite transverse waves and exchange energy between flow …
Microfluidics has enabled a revolution in the manipulation of small volumes of fluids. Controlling flows at larger scales and faster rates, or $\textit{macrofluidics}$, has broad applications but involves the unique complexities of inertial flow physics. We show how such effects are exploited in a device proposed by Nikola Tesla that acts as a diode or valve whose asymmetric internal geometry leads to direction-dependent fluidic resistance. Systematic tests for steady forcing conditions reveal that diodicity turns on abruptly at Reynolds number $\textrm{Re} \approx 200$ and is accompanied by n…
