Finite-size effects on the gravitational wave signal from a neutron star merger typically manifest at high frequencies where detector sensitivity decreases. Proposed sensitivity improvements can give us access both to stronger signals and to a myriad of weak signals from cosmological distances. The latter will outnumber the former and the relevant part of signal will be redshifted towards the detector most sensitive band. We study the redshift dependence of information about neutron star matter and find that single-scale properties, such as the star radius or the post-merger frequency, are better measured from the distant weak sources from $z\sim 1$.
Regarding a $d-$dimensional spherically symmetric line element in the context of Einstein-$Λ$ gravity, the hydrostatic equilibrium equation of stars is obtained. Then, by using the lowest order constrained variational (LOCV) method with the AV$18$ potential and employing microscopic many body calculations in the modern equation of state, the structure properties of neutron stars are investigated. Regardless of cosmological point of view and considering arbitrary positive and negative values of the cosmological constant, the maximum mass of the neutron stars and their corresponding radius in $4…
Gravitational waves from cosmological double neutron star binaries can be significantly demagnified by strong gravitational lensing effect, and the proposed future missions such as BBO or DECIGO might miss some of the demagnified GW signals below a detection threshold. The undetectable binaries would form a GW foreground which might hamper detection of a very weak primordial GW signal. We discuss the outlook of this potential problem, using a simple model based on the singular-isothermal-sphere lens profile. Fortunately, it is expected that, for presumable merger rate of NS+NSs, the residual f…
[Abridged] This study presents the first Bayesian investigation of the accuracy with which the cosmological parameters can be measured using information coming \emph{only} from the gravitational wave observations of binary neutron star systems by Einstein Telescope. We find, by direct simulation of $10^3$ detections of binary neutron stars, that, within our simplifying assumptions, $H_0,Ω_m,Ω_Λ,w_0$ and $w_1$ can be measured at the $95\%$ level with an accuracy of $\sim 8\%,65\%,39\%,80\%$ and $90\%$, respectively. We also find, by extrapolation, that a measurement accuracy comparable with cur…
Certain scalar-tensor theories of gravity that generalize Jordan-Fierz-Brans-Dicke theory are known to predict non-trivial phenomenology for neutron stars. In these theories, first proposed by Damour and Esposito-Farèse, the scalar field has a standard kinetic term, and couples conformally to the matter fields. The weak equivalence principle is therefore satisfied, but scalar effects may arise in strong-field regimes, e.g. allowing for violations of the strong equivalence principle in neutron stars ("spontaneous scalarization") or in sufficiently tight binary neutron-star systems ("dynamical/i…
It has recently been suggested that collapse of neutron stars induced by a phase transition to quark matter can be a considerable source of gravitational waves with kHz frequencies. We demonstrate that if about one percent of all neutron stars undergo this process, the resulting cosmological gravitational wave background would reach about 10^-10 times the critical density. The background would peak at kHz frequencies and could have an observationally significant tail down to Hz frequencies. It would be comparable or higher than other astrophysical backgrounds, for example, from ordinary core c…
The coalescence of binary neutron stars are one of the main sources of gravitational waves for ground-based gravitational wave detectors. As Bayesian inference for binary neutron stars is computationally expensive, more efficient and faster converging algorithms are always needed. In this work, we conduct a feasibility study using a Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithm (HMC). The HMC is a sampling algorithm that takes advantage of gradient information from the geometry of the parameter space to efficiently sample from the posterior distribution, allowing the algorithm to avoid the random-walk beh…
This study focuses on the static neutron star perspective for two types of cosmological inflationary attractor theories, namely the induced inflationary attractors and the quadratic inflationary attractors. The two cosmological models can be discriminated cosmologically, since one of the two does not provide a viable inflationary phenomenology, thus in this paper we investigate the predictions of these theories for static neutron stars, mainly focusing on the mass and radii of neutron stars. We aim to demonstrate that although the models have different inflationary phenomenology, the neutron s…
We estimate the spectral properties of the stochastic background of gravitational radiation emitted by a cosmological population of hot, young, rapidly rotating neutron stars. Their formation rate as a function of redshift is deduced from an observation-based determination of the star formation history in the Universe, and the gravitational energy is assumed to be radiated during the spin-down phase associated to the newly discovered r-mode instability. We calculate the overall signal produced by the ensemble of such neutron stars, assuming various cosmological backgrounds. We find that the sp…
Deviations from the predictions of general relativity due to energy-momentum squared gravity (EMSG) are expected to become pronounced in the high density cores of neutron stars. We derive the hydrostatic equilibrium equations in EMSG and solve them numerically to obtain the neutron star mass-radius relations for four different realistic equations of state. We use the existing observational measurements of the masses and radii of neutron stars to constrain the free parameter, $α,$ that characterizes the coupling between matter and spacetime in EMSG. We show that $-10^{-38}\,\mathrm{cm^{3}/erg}<…
Detection of gravitational waves from the inspiral phase of binary neutron star coalescence will allow us to measure the effects of the tidal coupling in such systems. These effects will be measurable using 3rd generation gravitational wave detectors, e.g. the Einstein Telescope, which will be capable of detecting inspiralling binary neutron star systems out to redshift z=4. Tidal effects provide additional contributions to the phase evolution of the gravitational wave signal that break a degeneracy between the system's mass parameters and redshift and thereby allow the simultaneous measuremen…
We study neutron stars in a varying speed of light (VSL) theory of gravity in which the local speed of light depends upon the value of a scalar field $ϕ$. We find that the masses and radii of the stars are strongly dependent on the strength of the coupling between $ϕ$ and the matter field and that for certain choices of coupling parameters, the maximum neutron star mass can be arbitrarily small. We also discuss the phenomenon of cosmological evolution of VSL stars (analogous to the gravitational evolution in scalar-tensor theories) and we derive a relation showing how the fractional change in …
Gravitational wave observations of binary neutron star mergers provide valuable information about neutron star structure and the equation of state of dense nuclear matter. Numerous methods have been proposed to analyze the population of observed neutron stars and previous work has demonstrated the necessity of jointly fitting the astrophysical distribution and the equation of state in order to accurately constrain the equation of state. In this work, we introduce a new framework to simultaneously infer the distribution of binary neutron star masses and the nuclear equation of state using Gauss…
We consider the evolution of cosmological gravitational waves in scalar-tensor theory and $F(R)$ gravity theory as typical models of the modified gravity. Although the propagation speed is not changed from the speed of light, the propagation phase changes when we compare the propagation in these modified gravity theories with the propagation in the $Λ$CDM model. The phase change might be detected in future observations.
Recent work on the expected event rate of neutron star inspiral signals in the LIGO detector is summarized. The observed signals will be from inspirals at cosmological distances, and the important cosmological effects on the event rate and spectrum are discussed. This paper is a contribution to the proceedings of the 17th Texas Symposium held in Munich, 12-17 December 1994.
Bayesian hierarchical inference of phenomenological parameterized neutron star equations of state (EoS) from multiple gravitational wave observations of binary neutron star mergers is of fundamental importance in improving our understanding of neutron star structure, the general properties of matter at supra nuclear densities and the strong nuclear force. However, such an analysis is computationally costly as it is unable to re-use single-event EoS agnostic parameter estimation runs that are carried out regardless for generating gravitational wave transient catalogs. With the number of events …
The LIGO/VIRGO collaboration has recently announced the detection of gravitational waves from a neutron star-neutron star merger (GW170817) and the simultaneous measurement of an optical counterpart (the gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A). The close arrival time of the gravitational and electromagnetic waves limits the difference in speed of photons and gravitons to be less than about one part in $10^{15}$. This has three important implications for cosmological scalar-tensor gravity theories that are often touted as dark energy candidates and alternatives to $Λ$CDM. First, for the most general scala…
The gravitational aether theory is a modification of general relativity that decouples vacuum energy from gravity, and thus can potentially address the cosmological constant problem. The classical theory is distinguishable from general relativity only in the presence of relativistic pressure (or vorticity). Since the interior of neutron stars has high pressure and as their mass and radius can be measured observationally, they are the perfect laboratory for testing the validity of the aether theory. In this paper, we solve the equations of stellar structure for the gravitational aether theory a…
The primary target for the planned space-borne gravitational wave interferometers DECIGO/BBO is a primordial gravitational wave background (PGWB). However there exist astrophysical foregrounds and among them, gravitational waves from neutron star (NS) binaries are the solid and strong component that must be identified and subtracted. In this paper, we discuss the geometry of detector configurations preferable for identifying the NS/NS binary signals. As a first step, we analytically estimate the minimum signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of the binaries for several static detector configurations th…

Third-generation (3G) gravitational-wave detectors will observe thousands of coalescing neutron star binaries with unprecedented fidelity. Extracting the highest precision science from these signals is expected to be challenging owing to both high signal-to-noise ratios and long-duration signals. We demonstrate that current Bayesian inference paradigms can be extended to the analysis of binary neutron star signals without breaking the computational bank. We construct reduced order models for $\sim 90\,\mathrm{minute}$ long gravitational-wave signals, covering the observing band ($5-2048\,\math…
Gravitational-wave signals from binary neutron star coalescences carry information about the star's equation of state in their tidal signatures. A major issue in the inference of the tidal parameters (or directly of the equation of state) is the systematic error introduced by the waveform approximants. We use a bottom-up approach based on gauge-invariant phase analysis and the Fisher information matrix to investigate waveform systematics and help identifying biases in parameter estimation. A mock analysis of 15 different binaries indicates that systematics in current waveform models dominate o…
Information on the phase structure of strongly interacting matter at high baryon densities can be gained from observations of neutron stars and their detailed analysis. In the present work Bayesian inference methods are used to set constraints on the speed of sound in the interior of neutron stars, based on recent multi-messenger data in combination with limiting conditions from nuclear physics at low densities. Two general parametric representations are introduced for the sound speed $c_s$ in order to examine the independence with respect to choices for the parametrisation of Priors. Credible…
We consider gravitational waves emitted by various populations of compact binaries at cosmological distances. We use population synthesis models to characterize the properties of double neutron stars, double black holes and double white dwarf binaries as well as white dwarf-neutron star, white dwarf-black hole and black hole-neutron star systems. We use the observationally determined cosmic star formation history to reconstruct the redshift distribution of these sources and their merging rate evolution. The gravitational signals emitted by each source during its early-inspiral phase add random…

A precise moment of inertia measurement for PSR J0737-3039A in the double pulsar system is expected within the next five years. We present here a new method of mapping the anticipated measurement of the moment of inertia directly into the neutron star structure. We determine the maximum and minimum values possible for the moment of inertia of a neutron star of a given radius based on physical stability arguments, assuming knowledge of the equation of state only at densities below the nuclear saturation density. If the equation of state is trusted up to the nuclear saturation density, we find t…
The Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) is currently observing the x-ray pulse profiles emitted by hot spots on the surface of rotating neutron stars allowing for an inference of their radii with unprecedented precision. A critical ingredient in the pulse profile model is an analytical formula for the oblate shape of the star. These formulas require a fitting over a large ensemble of neutron star solutions, which cover a wide set of equations of state, stellar compactnesses and rotational frequencies. However, this procedure introduces a source of systematic error, as (i) the fi…
The gravitational-wave (GW) events, produced by the coalescence of binary neutron-stars (BNS), can be treated as the standard sirens to probe the expansion history of the Universe, if their redshifts could be determined from the electromagnetic observations. For the high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 0.1$) events, the short $γ$-ray bursts (sGRBs) and the afterglows are always considered as the primary electromagnetic counterparts. In this paper, by investigating various models of sGRBs and afterglows, we discuss the rates and distributions of BNS mergers' multi-messenger observations with GW detectors i…
Bekenstein's Tensor-Vector-Scalar (TeVeS) theory has had considerable success in explaining various phenomena without the need for dark matter. However, it is difficult to observationally discern the differences between TeVeS and predictions made within the Lambda-cold dark matter concordance model. This implies that alternative tests are required that independently verify which theory is correct. For this we turn to the strong-field regime of TeVeS. In particular, we solve the spherically symmetric equations of hydrostatic equilibrium for a perfect fluid with a realistic equation of state to …
We present the first joint inference of standard sirens and gravitational wave weak lensing by filtering of the same dataset. We imagine a post-LISA scenario emerging around the late 2030s when LISA will have accumulated a number of detections at high redshift; LIGO-VIRGO will have finished observing at low redshift, and Einstein Telescope will have started making new observations out to redshifts possibly overlapping with LISA. Euclid and other cosmological probes will have provided constraints at percent level by then, but mostly exhausted their ability to improve any further. We derive fore…
We consider stability of spherically symmetric solutions in $f(R)$ gravity model proposed by Starobinsky. We find that the model suffers from a severe fine tuning problem when applied to compact objects like neutron stars. The problem can be remedied by introducing a cut off on the mass of the scalar degree of freedom present in the model. A new mass scale associated with neutron stars density is then required for the stabilities of $f(R)$ gravity solutions inside relativistic stars.
The possible signatures of the presence of hyperons inside neutron stars are discussed within a Bayesian inference framework applied to a set of models based on a density-dependent relativistic mean-field description of hadronic matter. Nuclear matter properties, hypernuclei properties, and observational information are used to constrain the models. General properties of neutron stars such as the maximum mass, radius, tidal deformability, proton fraction, hyperon fraction, and speed of sound are discussed. It is shown that the two solar mass constraint imposes that neutron stars described by e…
Next-generation detectors are expected to be sensitive to postmerger signals from binary neutron star coalescences and thus to directly probe the remnant dynamics. We investigate the scientific potential of postmerger detections with the Einstein Telescope using full Bayesian analyses with the state-of-the-art waveform model ${\tt NRPMw}$. We find that: (i) Postmerger signals with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) ${\sim}7$ can be confidently detected with a Bayes' factor of $\log{\cal B}\simeq 5$ ($\rm e$-folded) and the posterior distributions report informative measurements already at SNR ${\sim}…
The improved sensitivity of third generation gravitational wave detectors opens the possibility of detecting the primordial cosmological stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). Detection of the cosmological SGWB is facing a novel challenge: it will likely be masked by the foreground generated by a large number of coalescences of compact binary systems consisting of black holes and/or neutron stars. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of reducing this foreground by removing (notching) the individually resolved compact binary signals in time-frequency space. We establish that …
We develop a cosmographic framework for analysing redshift drift signals of nearby sources model-independently, i.e., without making assumptions about the metric description of the Universe. We show that the Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) prediction is altered nontrivially by regional anisotropies and inhomogeneities. In particular, we find that the position drift of the sources is nontrivially linked to the redshift drift signal. The redshift drift signal for nearby sources might be formulated in terms of an effective deceleration parameter, which reduces to the FLRW deceleratio…
