We measured 304 absorption features in the ultraviolet and visible spectra of the star 51 Oph, which is known to have a debris disk with a high inclination. We analyzed the relative populations of atoms in excited fine-structure and metastable levels that are maintained by optical pumping and collisional excitation by electrons, and we found that most of the gas is situated at about 6AU from the star, has an electron volume density $10^5 < n(e) < 3\times 10^6{\rm cm}^{-3}$, and a temperature T=8000K. Our interpretations reveal that the gas is partly ionized, has a column density of neutral hydrogen equal to $10^{21}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$, and has a composition similar to that of a mildly depleted interstellar medium or that of Jupiter-family comets. Compared to results for disks around some other stars, such as $β$ Pic and 49 Cet, we find surprisingly little neutral carbon. No molecular features were detected, which indicates that our line of sight misses the molecule-rich central plane of the disk. The tilt of the disk is also validated by our being able to detect resonant scattering of the starlight by oxygen atoms.
The dynamics of stellar streams in rotating barred potentials is explained for the first time. Naturally, neighbouring stream stars reach pericentre at slightly different times. In the presence of a rotating bar, these neighbouring stream stars experience different bar orientations during pericentric passage and hence each star receives a different torque from the bar. These differing torques reshape the angular momentum and energy distribution of stars in the stream, which in turn changes the growth rate of the stream. For a progenitor orbiting in the same sense as the bar's rotation and sati…
Star formation in molecular clouds can be triggered by the dynamical action of winds from massive stars. Furthermore, X-ray and UV fluxes from massive stars can influence the life time of surrounding circumstellar disks. We present the results of a 53 ks XMM-Newton observation centered on the Rho Ophiuchi A+B binary system. Rho Ophiiuchi lies in the center of a ring of dust, likely formed by the action of its winds. This region is different from the dense core of the cloud (L1688 Core F) where star formation is at work. X-rays are detected from Rho Ophiuchi as well as a group of surrounding X-…
White dwarfs containing orbiting planetesimals or their debris represent crucial benchmarks by which theoretical investigations of post-main-sequence planetary systems may be calibrated. The photometric transit signatures of likely planetary debris in the ZTF J0139+5245 white dwarf system has an orbital period of about 110 days. An asteroid which breaks up to produce this debris may spin itself to destruction through repeated close encounters with the star without entering its Roche radius and without influence from the white dwarf's luminosity. Here, we place coupled constraints on the orbita…
The photospheres of some white dwarfs are "polluted" by accretion of material from their surrounding planetary debris. White dwarfs with dust disks are often heavily polluted and high-resolution spectroscopic observations of these systems can be used to infer the chemical compositions of extrasolar planetary material. Here, we report spectroscopic observation and analysis of 19 white dwarfs with dust disks or candidate disks. The overall abundance pattern very much resembles that of bulk Earth and we are starting to build a large enough sample to probe a wide range of planetary compositions. W…
Planetary systems commonly survive the evolution of single stars, as evidenced by terrestrial-like planetesimal debris observed orbiting and polluting the surfaces of white dwarfs. This letter reports the identification of a circumbinary dust disk surrounding a white dwarf with a substellar companion in a 2.27 hr orbit. The system bears the dual hallmarks of atmospheric metal pollution and infrared excess, however the standard (flat and opaque) disk configuration is dynamically precluded by the binary. Instead, the detected reservoir of debris must lie well beyond the Roche limit in an optical…
Debris disks are tenuous, dusty belts surrounding main sequence stars generated by collisions between planetesimals. HD 206893 is one of only two stars known to host a directly imaged brown dwarf orbiting interior to its debris ring, in this case at a projected separation of 10.4 au. Here we resolve structure in the debris disk around HD 206893 at an angular resolution of 0.6" (24 au) and wavelength of 1.3 mm with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We observe a broad disk extending from a radius of <51 au to 194^{+13}_{-2} au. We model the disk with a continuous, gapped, …
We present new, near-infrared (1.1--2.4 $μm$) high-contrast imaging of the bright debris disk surrounding HIP 79977 with the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics system (SCExAO) coupled with the CHARIS integral field spectrograph. SCExAO/CHARIS resolves the disk down to smaller angular separations of (0.11"; $r \sim 14$ au) and at a higher significance than previously achieved at the same wavelengths. The disk exhibits a marginally significant east-west brightness asymmetry in $H$ band that requires confirmation. Geometrical modeling suggests a nearly edge-on disk viewed at a position …
We present 1.3 millimeter observations of the debris disk surrounding the HR 8799 multi-planet system from the Submillimeter Array to complement archival ALMA observations that spatially filtered away the bulk of the emission. The image morphology at $3.8$ arcsecond (150 AU) resolution indicates an optically thin circumstellar belt, which we associate with a population of dust-producing planetesimals within the debris disk. The interferometric visibilities are fit well by an axisymmetric radial power-law model characterized by a broad width, $ΔR/R\gtrsim 1$. The belt inclination and orientatio…
Observations from the Herschel Space Observatory have more than doubled the number of wide debris disks orbiting Sunlike stars to include over 30 systems with R > 100 AU. Here we present new Herschel PACS and re-analyzed Spitzer MIPS photometry of five Sunlike stars with wide debris disks, from Kuiper belt size to R > 150 AU. The disk surrounding HD 105211 is well resolved, with an angular extent of >14" along the major axis, and the disks of HD 33636, HD 50554, and HD 52265 are extended beyond the PACS PSF size (50% of energy enclosed within radius 4.23"). HD 105211 also has a 24-micron infra…
X-rays in intermediate polars (IPs) originate in a compact region near the surface of a magnetic white dwarf (WD) and interact with the complex environment surrounding the emission region. Here we report a case study of two IPs, TV Col and V2731 Oph with selected archival X-ray observations (NuSTAR, Swift, Suzaku, and XMM-Newton). For TV Col, we were successful in simultaneously accounting for the primary X-rays, the secondary X-rays due to Compton scattering and fluorescence, and the effects of local absorbers. In this case, we were able to demonstrate that the shock height is small, based on…
We present far- and near-ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy of the $\sim$23 Myr edge-on debris disk surrounding the A0V star $η$ Telescopii, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. We detect absorption lines from C I, C II, O I, Mg II, Al II, Si II, S II, Mn II, Fe II, and marginally N I. The lines show two clear absorption components at $-22.7\pm0.5$ km s$^{-1}$ and $-17.8\pm0.7$ km s$^{-1}$, which we attribute to circumstellar (CS) and interstellar (IS) gas, respectively. CO absorption is not detected, and we find no evidence for star-grazing exocomets…
Debris discs have often been described as gas-poor discs as the gas-to-dust ratio is expected to be considerably lower than in primordial, protoplanetary discs. However, recent observations have confirmed the presence of a non-negligible amount of cold gas in the circumstellar (CS) debris discs around young main-sequence stars. This cold gas has been suggested to be related to the outgassing of planetesimals and cometary-like objects. The aim of the paper is to investigate the presence of hot gas in the surroundings of stars bearing cold-gas debris discs. High-resolution optical spectra of all c…
We present 1.3 mm observations of the Sun-like star $τ$ Ceti with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) that probe angular scales of $\sim1$'' (4 AU). This first interferometric image of the $τ$ Ceti system, which hosts both a debris disk and possible multiplanet system, shows emission from a nearly face-on belt of cold dust with a position angle of $90^\circ$ surrounding an unresolved central source at the stellar position. To characterize this emission structure, we fit parametric models to the millimeter visibilities. The resulting best-fit model yields an inner belt edge …

We characterize the first 40 Myr of evolution of circumstellar disks through a unified study of the infrared properties of members of young clusters and associations with ages from 2 Myr up to ~ 40 Myr: NGC 1333, NGC 1960, NGC 2232, NGC 2244, NGC 2362, NGC 2547, IC 348, IC 2395, IC 4665, Chamaeleon I, Orion OB1a and OB1b, Taurus, the \b{eta} Pictoris Moving Group, \r{ho} Ophiuchi, and the associations of Argus, Carina, Columba, Scorpius-Centaurus, and Tucana-Horologium. Our work features: 1.) a filtering technique to flag noisy backgrounds, 2.) a method based on the probability distribution of…
Epsilon Eridani is a nearby, young Sun-like star that hosts a ring of cool debris analogous to the solar system's Edgeworth-Kuiper belt. Early observations at (sub-)mm wavelengths gave tentative evidence of the presence of inhomogeneities in the ring, which have been ascribed to the effect of a putative low eccentricity planet, orbiting close to the ring. The existence of these structures have been recently challenged by high resolution interferometric millimeter observations. Here we present the deepest single-dish image of Epsilon Eridani at millimeter wavelengths, obtained with the Large Mi…
