In the last few years, there has been significant interest in understanding the stationary comparison version of the first law of black hole mechanics in the vielbein formulation of gravity. Several authors have pointed out that to discuss the first law in the vielbein formulation one must extend the Iyer-Wald Noether charge formalism appropriately. Jacobson and Mohd [arXiv:1507.01054] and Prabhu [arXiv:1511.00388] formulated such a generalisation for symmetry under combined spacetime diffeomorphisms and local Lorentz transformations. In this paper, we apply and appropriately adapt their formalism to four-dimensional gravity coupled to a Majorana field and to a Rarita-Schwinger field. We explore the first law of black hole mechanics and the construction of the Lorentz-diffeomorphism Noether charges in the presence of fermionic fields, relevant for simple supergravity.
We re-derive the first law of black hole mechanics in the context of the Einstein-Maxwell theory in a gauge-invariant way introducing "momentum maps" associated to field strengths and the vectors that generate their symmetries. These objects play the role of generalized thermodynamical potentials in the first law and satisfy generalized zeroth laws, as first observed in the context of principal gauge bundles by Prabhu, but they can be generalized to more complex situations. We test our ideas on the $d$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-Tangherlini black hole.
We present in details a numerical approach for solving supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems with a gauge symmetry valid in all fermionic sectors. The method uses a recursive algorithm to calculate matrix elements of any gauge invariant operator in the Fock basis, in particular of the Hamiltonian operator, and can be used for any gauge group. We describe its application to a supersymmetric anharmonic oscillator model with discrete spectrum.
We show that the spectral theory of the Dirac operator $D = i\delsl-σ(x) -iπ(x)\gam_5$ in a static background $(σ(x),π(x))$ in 1+1 space-time dimensions, is underlined by a certain generalization of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, and explore its consequences.
We obtain ADM and Komar surface integrals for the energy density, tension and angular momentum density of stationary $p$-brane solutions of Einstein's equations. We use them to derive a Smarr-type formula for the energy density and thence a first law of black brane mechanics. The intensive variable conjugate to the worldspace p-volume is an `effective' tension that equals the ADM tension for uncharged branes, but vanishes for isotropic boost-invariant charged branes.
The Zeroth and First Laws of Black Hole Mechanics are derived in the context of non-linear electrodynamics coupled to gravity. The Zeroth Law is shown to hold quite generally even if the Dominant Energy Condition is violated. The derivation of the First Law is discussed in detail for general matter fields coupled to gravity. The general mass variation formula obtained includes a term previously omitted in some of the literature. This is then applied to the case of non-linear electrodynamics and the usual First Law is found to hold true. As an example, Born-Infeld theory is discussed. The resul…
We consider the gauged free fermionic matrix model, for a single fermionic matrix. In the large $N$ limit this system describes a $c=1/2$ chiral fermion in $1+1$ dimensions. The Gauss' law constraint implies that to obtain a physical state, indices of the fermionic matrices must be fully contracted, to form a singlet. There are two ways in which this can be achieved: one can consider a trace basis formed from products of traces of fermionic matrices or one can consider a Schur function basis, labeled by Young diagrams. The Schur polynomials for the fermions involve a twisted character, as a co…
We investigate the second law of black hole mechanics in gravitational theories with higher derivative terms in the action. Wall has described a method for defining an entropy that satisfies the second law to linear order in perturbations around a stationary black hole. We show that this can be extended to define an entropy that satisfies the second law to quadratic order in perturbations, provided that one treats the higher derivative terms in the sense of effective field theory. We also address some outstanding issues with Wall's method, in particular, its gauge invariance and its relation t…
We derive a mass formula and a mass variation law for asymptotically flat, stationary spacetimes, invariant under two commuting rotational symmetries, in a general five dimensional theory of gravity coupled to an arbitrary set of Maxwell fields and uncharged scalar fields. If the spacetime is everywhere regular, these mass formulas reduce to a sum of magnetic flux terms defined on its non-trivial 2-cycles. If there is a black hole, we obtain a mass variation law more general than previously obtained, which also has contributions from the 2-cycles exterior to the black hole. This can be interpr…
The formulation of Weak Isolated Horizons (WIH) based on the Isolated Horizon formulation of black hole horizons is reconsidered. The first part of the paper deals with the derivation of laws of mechanics of a WIH. While the zeroth law follows from the WIH boundary conditions, first law depends on the action chosen. We construct the covariant phase space for a spacetime having an WIH as inner boundary for the Holst action. This requires the introduction of new potential functions so that the symplectic structure is foliation independent. We show that a precise cancellation among various terms …
It is shown that all generalized two--dimensional dilaton theories with arbitrary matter content (with a curvature independent coupling to gravity) do not only obey a first law of black hole mechanics (which follows from Wald's general considerations, if the entropy S is defined appropriately), but also a second law: δS \ge 0 provided only that the null energy condition holds and that, loosely speaking, for late times a stationary state is assumed. Also any two-dimensional f(R)--theory is covered. This generalizes a previous proof of Frolov [1] to a much wider class of theories.
We prove the uniqueness of the ground state for a supersymmetric quantum mechanical system of two fermions and two bosons, which is closely related to the N=1 WZ-model. The proof is constructive and gives detailed information on what the ground state looks like.
These notes provide a self-contained introduction to the derivation of the zero, first and second laws of black hole mechanics. The prerequisite conservation laws in gauge and gravity theories are also briefly discussed. An explicit derivation of the first law in general relativity is performed in appendix.
We apply the recent derivations of dual charges in asymptotically flat spacetimes to asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes. In contrast to the results in the flat case, in the AdS case with a Dirichlet boundary the dual charge contribution vanishes at the leading order. However, by focusing on the Taub-NUT-AdS solution, we show that nevertheless, more generally, the dual charge is non-vanishing and corresponds to the NUT parameter. We propose a complex first law of black mechanics in the presence of NUT charges that is inspired by the naturally complex nature of the charges derived using Hamil…
It is well known that in general theories of gravity with the diffeomorphism symmetry, the black hole entropy is a Noether charge. But what will happen if the symmetry is explicitly broken? By investigating the covariant first law of black hole mechanics with background fields, we show that the Noether entropy is still applicable due to the local nature of the black hole entropy. Moreover, motivated by the proposal that the cosmological constant behaves as a thermodynamic variable, we allow the non-dynamical background fields to be varied. To illustrate this general formalism, we study a gener…
Near Horizon Extremal Geometries (NHEG) are solutions to gravity theories with $ SL(2,R) \times U(1)^N $ (for some N) symmetry, are smooth geometries and have no event horizon, unlike black holes. Following the ideas by R. M. Wald, we derive laws of NHEG dynamics, the analogs of laws of black hole dynamics for the NHEG. Despite the absence of horizon in the NHEG, one may associate an entropy to the NHEG, as a Noether-Wald conserved charge. We work out entropy and entropy perturbation laws, which are respectively universal relations between conserved Noether charges corresponding to the NHEG an…
We study the underlying extended supersymmetric structure in a system composed of fermions scattered off an infinitely extended static domain wall in the $xz$-plane. As we shall demonstrate, the fermionic scattered states are associated to two $N=2$ one dimensional supersymmetric quantum mechanical algebras with zero central charge. These two symmetries are combined to form a non-trivial one dimensional $N=4$ superalgebra with various central charges. In addition, we form higher dimensional irreducible representations of the two $N=2$ algebras. Moreover, we study how the Witten index behaves u…
A sharper formulation is presented for an interpretation of quantum mechanics advocated by author. As an essential element we put forward conservation laws concerning the ontological nature of a variable, and the uncertainties concerning the realisation of states. Quantum mechanics can then be treated as a device that combines statistics with mechanical, deterministic laws, such that uncertainties are passed on from initial states to final states.
We study static fermion bags in the 1+1 dimensional Gross-Neveu and Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models. It has been known, from the work of Dashen, Hasslacher and Neveu (DHN), followed by Shei's work, in the 1970's, that the self-consistent static fermion bags in these models are reflectionless. The works of DHN and of Shei were based on inverse scattering theory. Several years ago, we offered an alternative argument to establish the reflectionless nature of these fermion bags, which was based on analysis of the spatial asymptotic behavior of the resolvent of the Dirac operator in the background of a s…
The spectrum of the $D=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills quantum mechanics with $SU(3)$ gauge group symmetry is computed in different channels with definite total angular momentum and the total number of fermions. In sectors with small number of fermions the spectrum is shown to be purely discrete. Continuous spectrum appears in channels with more fermions. Supersymmetry generators are used to identify supermultiplets and determine the level of restoration of supersymmetry for a finite cutoff.
We consider the target space entanglement in quantum mechanics of non-interacting fermions at finite temperature. Unlike pure states investigated in arXiv:2105.13726, the (Rényi) entanglement entropy for thermal states does not follow a simple bound because all states in the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space are involved. We investigate a general formula of the target space Rényi entropy for $N$ fermions at finite temperature, and present numerical results of the entropy in a one-dimensional model. We also argue the large $N$ behaviors with a comparison to the grand canonical ensemble.
In a previous paper we have shown how, for bosonic fields, the generating functional in both relativistic quantum field theory and thermal field theory can be evaluated by use of a standard quantum mechanical path integral. In this paper we extend this method to include fermionic fields. A particular problem is posed by Green's functions with external fermionic lines, where the different boundary conditions of bosons and fermions in imaginary time have to be accommodated within one path integral expression. The general procedure is worked out in the example of scalar and spinor self-energies i…
We study fermionic fields localized on topologically unstable domain walls bounded by strings in a grand unified theory theoretical framework. Particularly, we found that the localized fermionic degrees of freedom, which are up and down quarks as long as charged leptons, are connected to three independent N=2, $d=1$ supersymmetric quantum mechanics algebras. As we demonstrate, these algebras can be combined to form higher order representations of N=2, $d=1$ supersymmetry. Due to the uniform coupling of the domain wall solutions to the down-quarks and leptons, we also show that a higher order N…
In ten space-time dimensions the number of Majorana-Weyl fermions is not conserved, not only during the time evolution, but also by rotations. As a consequence the empty Fock state is not rotationally symmetric. We construct explicitly the simplest singlet state which provides the starting point for building up invariant SO(9) subspaces. The state has non-zero fermion number and is a complicated combination of the 1360 elementary, gauge invariant, gluinoless Fock states with twelve fermions. Fermionic structure of higher irreps of SO(9) is also briefly outlined.
This note relates topics in statistical mechanics, graph theory and combinatorics, lattice quantum field theory, super quantum mechanics and string theory. We give a precise relation between the dimer model on a graph embedded on a torus and the massless free Majorana fermion living on the same lattice. A loop expansion of the fermion determinant is performed, where the loops turn out to be compositions of two perfect matchings. These loop states are sorted into co-chain groups using categorification techniques similar to the ones used for categorifying knot polynomials. The Euler characterist…
Scattering discussion due to Double Dirac Equation in Quaternionic version of relativistic quantum mechanics has been studied in this paper in details. In such a quantum mechanics Dirac equation in presence vector and scalar potential has been considered. Then a Quaternionic double Dirac delta potential comes to our considered system which causes to scatter the particles. Scattering states of the particles have been derived as well as reflected and transmission coefficients are calculated.
Fermionic zero modes around non-abelian vortices are shown that they constitute two $N=2$, $d=1$ supersymmetric quantum mechanics algebras. These two algebras can be combined under certain circumstances to form a central charge extended $N=4$ supersymmetric quantum algebra. We thoroughly discuss the implications of the existence of supersymmetric quantum mechanics algebras, in the quantum Hilbert space of the fermionic zero modes.
We show that the entanglement entropy associated to a region grows faster than the area of its boundary surface. This is done by proving a special case of a conjecture due to Widom that yields a surprisingly simple expression for the leading behaviour of the entanglement entropy.
Many-body entanglement is studied within the algebraic approach to quantum physics in systems made of Majorana fermions. In this framework, the notion of separability stems from partitions of the algebra of observables and properties of the associated correlation functions, rather than on particle tensor products. This allows obtaining a complete characterization of non-separable Majorana fermion states. These results may find direct applications in quantum metrology: using Majorana systems, sub-shot noise accuracy in parameter estimations can be achieved without preliminary, resource consumin…
A study of two-dimensional QCD on a spatial circle with Majorana fermions in the adjoint representation of the gauge groups SU(2) and SU(3) has been performed. The main emphasis is put on the symmetry properties related to the homotopically non-trivial gauge transformations and the discrete axial symmetry of this model. Within a gauge fixed canonical framework, the delicate interplay of topology on the one hand and Jacobians and boundary conditions arising in the course of resolving Gauss's law on the other hand is exhibited. As a result, a consistent description of the residual $Z_N$ gauge sy…
Quantum entanglement is closely related to the structure of spacetime in quantum gravity. For quantum field theories or statistical models, we usually consider base space entanglement. However, target space instead of base space sometimes directly connects to our spacetime. In these cases, it is natural to consider a concept of target space entanglement. To define the target space entanglement, we consider a generalized definition of entanglement entropy based on an algebraic approach. This approach is reviewed and is applied to the first quantized particles, in particular, fermions. This arti…
In this paper, we examine the validity of the first law of inner mechanics of black holes in Generalized Minimal Massive Gravity. We consider BTZ and spacelike warped black holes and show that the first law of inner mechanics is valid for given black holes in Generalized Minimal Massive Gravity. As we expect, due to the presence of the Lorentz Chern-Simons term in Lagrangian of considered model, the product of the entropies of the inner and outer horizons depends on the mass as it happens in Topologically Massive Gravity.
Bosonic and fermionic particle currents can be introduced in a more unified way, with the cost of introducing a preferred spacetime foliation. Such a unified treatment of bosons and fermions naturally emerges from an analogous superstring current, showing that the preferred spacetime foliation appears only at the level of effective field theory, not at the fundamental superstring level. The existence of the preferred spacetime foliation allows an objective definition of particles associated with quantum field theory in curved spacetime. Such an objective definition of particles makes the Bohmi…
A field theory is proposed where the regular fermionic matter and the dark fermionic matter are different states of the same "primordial" fermion fields. In regime of the fermion densities typical for normal particle physics, the primordial fermions split into three families identified with regular fermions. When fermion energy density becomes comparable with dark energy density, the theory allows new type of states. The possibility of such Cosmo-Low Energy Physics (CLEP) states is demonstrated by means of solutions of the field theory equations describing FRW universe filled by homogeneous sc…
To produce a fermionic model exhibiting an entanglement entropy volume law, we propose a particular version of nonlocality in which the energy-momentum dispersion relation is effectively randomized at the shortest length scales while preserving translation invariance. In contrast to the ground state of local fermions, exhibiting an entanglement entropy area law with logarithmic corrections, the entropy of nonlocal fermions is extensive, scaling as the volume of the subregion and crossing over to the anomalous fermion area law at scales larger than the locality scale, α. In the 1-d case, we are…
In this work, following recent studies which show that it is possible to localize gravity as well as scalar and gauge vector fields in a tachyonic de Sitter thick braneworld, we investigate the localization of fermion fields in this model. In order to achieve this aim we consider the Yukawa interaction term between the fermions and the tachyonic condensate scalar field MF(T)barPsiPsi in the action and analyze four different cases corresponding to distinct tachyonic functions F(T(w)). The only condition that this function must satisfy in order to yield 4D chiral fermions upon dimensional reduct…
We propose a statistical mechanical derivation of Kahler-Einstein metrics, i.e. solutions to Einstein's vacuum field equations in Euclidean signature (with a cosmological constant) on a compact Kahler manifold X. The microscopic theory is given by a canonical free fermion gas on X whose one-particle states are pluricanonical holomorphic sections on X (coinciding with higher spin states in the case of a Riemann surface). A heuristic, but hopefully physically illuminating, argument for the convergence in the thermodynamical (large N) limit is given, based on a recent mathematically rigorous resu…
We consider entanglement of first-quantized identical particles by adopting an algebraic approach. In particular, we investigate fermions whose wave functions are given by the Slater determinants, as for singlet sectors of one-matrix models. We show that the upper bounds of the general Rényi entropies are $N \log 2$ for $N$ particles or an $N\times N$ matrix. We compute the target space entanglement entropy and the mutual information in a free one-matrix model. We confirm the area law: the single-interval entropy for the ground state scales as $\frac{1}{3}\log N$ in the large $N$ model. We obt…
We derive both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics as gauge theories of Newtonian mechanics. Systematic development of the distinct symmetries of dynamics and measurement suggest that gauge theory may be motivated as a reconciliation of dynamics with measurement. Applying this principle to Newton's law with the simplest measurement theory leads to Lagrangian mechanics, while use of conformal measurement theory leads to Hamilton's equations.
A classical local cellular automaton can describe an interacting quantum field theory for fermions. We construct a simple classical automaton for a particular version of the Thirring model with imaginary coupling. This interacting fermionic quantum field theory obeys a unitary time evolution and shows all properties of quantum mechanics. Classical cellular automata with probabilistic initial conditions admit a description in the formalism of quantum mechanics. Our model exhibits interesting features as spontaneous symmetry breaking or solitons. The same model can be formulated as a generalized…
Simulations of supersymmetric field theories on the lattice with (spontaneously) broken supersymmetry suffer from a fermion sign problem related to the vanishing of the Witten index. We propose a novel approach which solves this problem in low dimensions by formulating the path integral on the lattice in terms of fermion loops. For N = 2 supersymmetric quantum mechanics the loop formulation becomes particularly simple and in this paper - the first in a series of three - we discuss in detail the reformulation of this model in terms of fermionic and bosonic bonds for various lattice discretisati…
In this article, after introducing a kind of q-deformation in quantum mechanics, first, q-deformed form of Dirac equation in relativistic quantum mechanics is derived. Then three important scat erring problem in physics are studied. All results have satisfied what we had expected before. Furthermore, effects of all parameters in the problems on the reflection and transmission coefficients are calculated and shown graphically.
We consider the evolution of quantum fermi fields in Minkowski gauge field backgrounds. Our motivation is the study of anomalous fermion number violating processes. We derive selection rules for fermion scattering amplitudes which relate the violation of fermionic charge to the change in winding between early and late times of the vacuum part of the gauge field. We find that the amount of fermion number violation is always integer, even when the topological charge of the gauge field is fractional. As an explicit example, we apply our results to spherically symmetric Minkowski solutions.

We study quantum mechanical models in which the dynamical degrees of freedom are real fermionic tensors of rank five and higher. They are the non-random counterparts of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models where the Hamiltonian couples six or more fermions. For the tensors of rank five, there is a unique $O(N)^5$ symmetric sixth-order Hamiltonian leading to a solvable large $N$ limit dominated by the melonic diagrams. We solve for the complete energy spectrum of this model when $N=2$ and deduce exact expressions for all the eigenvalues. The subset of states which are gauge invariant exhibit dege…
