Given a linear self-adjoint differential operator $\mathcal{L}$ along with a discretization scheme (like Finite Differences, Finite Elements, Galerkin Isogeometric Analysis, etc.), in many numerical applications it is crucial to understand how good the (relative) approximation of the whole spectrum of the discretized operator $\mathcal{L}^{(\mathbf{n})}$ is, compared to the spectrum of the continuous operator $\mathcal{L}$. The theory of Generalized Locally Toeplitz sequences allows to compute the spectral symbol function $ω$ associated to the discrete matrix $\mathcal{L}^{(\mathbf{n})}$.
We prove that the symbol $ω$ can measure, asymptotically, the maximum spectral relative error $\mathcal{E}\geq 0$. It measures how the scheme is far from a good relative approximation of the whole spectrum of $\mathcal{L}$, and it suggests a suitable (possibly non-uniform) grid such that, if coupled to an increasing refinement of the order of accuracy of the scheme, guarantees $\mathcal{E}=0$.
We analyze the stability and functional superconvergence of discretizations of diffusion problems with the narrow-stencil second-derivative generalized summation-by-parts (SBP) operators coupled with simultaneous approximation terms (SATs). Provided that the primal and adjoint solutions are sufficiently smooth and the SBP-SAT discretization is primal and adjoint consistent, we show that linear functionals associated with the steady diffusion problem superconverge at a rate of $ 2p $ when a degree $ p+1 $ narrow-stencil or a degree $ p $ wide-stencil generalized SBP operator is used for the spa…
We consider the goal-oriented error estimates for a linearized iterative solver for nonlinear partial differential equations. For the adjoint problem and iterative solver we consider, instead of the differentiation of the primal problem, a suitable linearization which guarantees the adjoint consistency of the numerical scheme. We derive error estimates and develop an efficient adaptive algorithm which balances the errors arising from the discretization and use of iterative solvers. Several numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency of this algorithm.
The purpose of this work is the development of space-time discretization schemes for phase-field optimal control problems. First, a time discretization of the forward problem is derived using a discontinuous Galerkin formulation. Here, a challenge is to include regularization termsand the crack irreversibility constraint. The optimal control setting is formulated by means of the Lagrangian approach from which the primal part, adjoint, tangent and adjoint Hessian are derived. Herein the overall Newton algorithm is based on a reduced approach by eliminating the state constraint. From the low-ord…
The purpose of this work is the development of space-time discretization schemes for phase-field optimal control problems. Specifically in the optimal control minimization problem, a tracking-type cost functional is minimized to steer the crack via the phase-field variable into a desired pattern. To achieve such optimal solutions, Neumann type boundary conditions need to be determined. First, a time discretization of the forward problem is derived using a discontinuous Galerkin formulation. Here, a challenge is to include regularization terms and the crack irreversibility constraint. The optim…
We construct a space-time parallel method for solving parabolic partial differential equations by coupling the Parareal algorithm in time with overlapping domain decomposition in space. The goal is to obtain a discretization consisting of "local" problems that can be solved on parallel computers efficiently. However, this introduces significant sources of error that must be evaluated. Reformulating the original Parareal algorithm as a variational method and implementing a finite element discretization in space enables an adjoint-based a posteriori error analysis to be performed. Through an app…
In this article, we propose a new numerical method and its analysis to solve eigenvalue problems for self-adjoint Schr{ö}dinger operators, by combining the Feshbach-Schur perturbation theory with the spectral Fourier discretization. In order to analyze the method, we establish an abstract framework of Feshbach-Schur perturbation theory with minimal regularity assumptions on the potential that is then applied to the setting of the new spectral Fourier discretization method. Finally, we present some numerical results that underline the theoretical findings.

This paper deals with the backward Euler method applied to semilinear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by additive noise. The SPDE is discretized in space by the finite element method and in time by the backward Euler. We consider a larger class of nonlinear drift functions, which are of Nemytskii type and polynomial of any odd degree with negative leading term, instead of only dealing with the special case of stochastic Allen-Chan equation as in the up to date literature. Moreover our linear operator is of second order and not necessarily self-adjoint, therefo…
Given a differential operator $\mathcal{L}$ along with its own eigenvalue problem $\mathcal{L}u = λu$ and an associated algebraic equation $\mathcal{L}^{(n)} \mathbf{u}_n = λ\mathbf{u}_n$ obtained by means of a discretization scheme (like Finite Differences, Finite Elements, Galerkin Isogeometric Analysis, etc.), the theory of Generalized Locally Toeplitz (GLT) sequences serves the purpose to compute the spectral symbol function $ω$ associated to the discrete operator $\mathcal{L}^{(n)}$ We prove that the spectral symbol $ω$ provides a necessary condition for a discretization scheme in order t…
In this paper, we study the numerical approximation of a general second order semilinear stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) driven by a additive fractional Brownian motion (fBm) with Hurst parameter $H>\frac 12$ and Poisson random measure, more realistic in modelling real world phenomena. To the best of our knowledge, numerical schemes for such SPDE have been lacked in scientific literature. The approximation is done with the standard finite element method in space and three Euler-type timestepping methods in time, more precisely linear implicit method, exponential integrator and …
The stable operation of gas networks is an important optimization target. While for this task commonly finite volume methods are used, we introduce a new finite difference approach. With a summation by part formulation for the spatial discretization, we get well-defined fluxes between the pipes. This allows a simple and explicit formulation of the coupling conditions at the node. From that, we derive the adjoint equations for the network simply and transparently. The resulting direct and adjoint equations are numerically efficient and easy to implement. The approach is demonstrated by the opti…
It is well known that the discretization of fractional diffusion equations (FDEs) with fractional derivatives $α\in(1,2)$, using the so-called weighted and shifted Grünwald formula, leads to linear systems whose coefficient matrices show a Toeplitz-like structure. More precisely, in the case of variable coefficients, the related matrix sequences belong to the so-called Generalized Locally Toeplitz (GLT) class. Conversely, when the given FDE have constant coefficients, using a suitable discretization, we encounter a Toeplitz structure associated to a nonnegative function $\mathcal{F}_α$, called…
This paper concerns the spectral analysis of matrix-sequences that are generated by the discretization and numerical approximation of partial differential equations (PDEs), in case the domain is a generic Peano-Jordan measurable set. It is observed that such matrix-sequences often present a spectral symbol, that is a measurable function describing the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalues. When the domain is a hypercube, the analysis can be conducted using the theory of generalized locally Toeplitz (GLT) sequences, but in case of generic domain, a new kind of matrix-sequences and theory has …

We consider parameter estimation of ordinary differential equation (ODE) models from noisy observations. For this problem, one conventional approach is to fit numerical solutions (e.g., Euler, Runge--Kutta) of ODEs to data. However, such a method does not account for the discretization error in numerical solutions and has limited estimation accuracy. In this study, we develop an estimation method that quantifies the discretization error based on data. The key idea is to model the discretization error as random variables and estimate their variance simultaneously with the ODE parameter. The pro…
We analyze space-time finite element methods for the numerical solution of distributed parabolic optimal control problems with energy regularization in the Bochner space $L^2(0,T;H^{-1}(Ω))$. By duality, the related norm can be evaluated by means of the solution of an elliptic quasi-stationary boundary value problem. When eliminating the control, we end up with the reduced optimality system that is nothing but the variational formulation of the coupled forward-backward primal and adjoint equations. Using Babuška's theorem, we prove unique solvability in the continuous case. Furthermore, we est…
The first focus of this paper is the characterization of the spectrum and the singular values of the coefficient matrix stemming from the discretization with space-time grid for a parabolic diffusion problem and from the approximation of distributed order fractional equations. For this purpose we will use the classical GLT theory and the new concept of GLT momentary symbols. The first permits to describe the singular value or eigenvalue asymptotic distribution of the sequence of the coefficient matrices, the latter permits to derive a function, which describes the singular value or eigenvalue …

This paper aims to investigate the numerical approximation of a general second order parabolic stochastic partial differential equation(SPDE) driven by multiplicative and additive noise under more relaxed conditions. The SPDE is discretized in space by the finite element method and in time by the linear implicit Euler method. This extends the current results in the literature to not necessary self-adjoint operator with more general boundary conditions. As a consequence key part of the proof does not rely on the spectral decomposition of the linear operator. We achieve optimal convergence order…
In two and three dimensional Lipschitz, but not necessarily convex, polytopal domains, we propose and analyze a posteriori error estimators for an optimal control problem involving the stationary Navier--Stokes equations; control constraints are also considered. We devise two strategies of discretization: a semi discrete scheme where the control variable is not discretized -- the so-called variational discrezation approach -- and a fully discrete scheme where the control is discretized with piecewise quadratic functions. For each solution solution technique, we design an a posteriori error est…
