The linear quadratic regulator is the fundamental problem of optimal control. Its state feedback version was set and solved in the early 1960s. However the static output feedback problem has no explicit-form solution. It is suggested to look at both of them from another point of view as matrix optimization problems, where the variable is a feedback matrix gain. The properties of such a function are investigated, it turns out to be smooth, but not convex, with possible non-connected domain. Nevertheless, the gradient method for it with the special step-size choice converges to the optimal solution in the state feedback case and to a stationary point in the output feedback case. The results can be extended for the general framework of unconstrained optimization and for reduced gradient method for minimization with equality-type constraints.
In this paper we demonstrate how certain structured feedback gains necessarily emerge as the optimal controller gains in two linear optimal control formulations for multi-agent systems. We consider the cases of linear optimal synchronization and linear optimal centroid stabilization. In the former problem, the considered cost functional integrates squared synchronization error and input, and in the latter, the considered cost functional integrates squared sum of the states and input. Our approach is to view the structures in the feedback gains in terms of a static output feedback with suitable…
The synthesis problem of static output feedback controllers within the anistropic-norm setup is revisited. A tractable synthesis approach involving iterations over a convex optimization problem is suggested, similarly to existing results for the Hinfinity-norm minimization case. The results are formulated by a couple of Linear Matrix Inequalities coupled via a bilinear equality, revealing, as in the Hinfinity case, the duality between the control-type and filtering type LMIs and allowing a tractable iterative method to cope with practical static output feedback synthesis problems. The resultin…
The goal of the paper is two-fold. The first of which is to derive an explicit formula to compute the generating series of a closed-loop system when a plant, given in a Chen-Fliess series description is in multiplicative output feedback connection with another system given in Chen-Fliess series description. Further, the objective extends in showing that the multiplicative dynamic output feedback connection has a natural interpretation as a transformation group acting on the plant. The second of the two-part goal of this paper is same as the first part albeit when the Chen-Fliess series in the …
This article presents a state feedback control design strategy for the stabilization of a vehicle along a reference collision avoidance maneuver. The stabilization of the vehicle is achieved through a combination of steering, acceleration and braking. A Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) model is obtained from the linearization of a non-linear model along the reference trajectory. A robust state feedback control law is computed for the LPV model. Finally, simulation results illustrate the stabilization of the vehicle along the reference trajectory.
In this paper, the design of a static feedback gain for a linear system subject to an input delay is studied. This synthesis is based on a stability analysis conducted using Lyapunov-Krasovskii theorem and Bessel-Legendre inequalities expressed in terms of LMIs. Some bilinear non-convex matrix inequalities are obtained to go from analysis to synthesis. They are then difficult to solve and an iterative LMI procedure is given which takes advantage of the elimination lemma. Naturally, slack variables are introduced and then, following an optimization process, values for them are proposed to reduc…
An optimized variant of the State Dependent Riccati Equations (SDREs) approach for nonlinear optimal feedback stabilization is presented. The proposed method is based on the construction of equivalent semilinear representations associated to the dynamics and their affine combination. The optimal combination is chosen to minimize the discrepancy between the SDRE control and the optimal feedback law stemming from the solution of the corresponding Hamilton Jacobi Bellman (HJB) equation. Numerical experiments assess effectiveness of the method in terms of stability of the closed-loop with near-to-…
We propose a deep unfolding-based approach for stabilization of time-delay linear systems. Deep unfolding is an emerging framework for design and improvement of iterative algorithms and attracting significant attentions in signal processing. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to design a static output feedback gain for stabilizing time-delay linear systems via deep unfolding. Within the algorithm, the learning part is driven by NeuralODE developed in the community of machine learning, while the gain verification is performed with linear matrix inequalities developed in the systems and cont…
In this paper, we give a complete geometric characterization of control systems, with m+1 inputs, locally static feedback equivalent to a triangular form compatible with the chained form, for m=1, respectively with the m-chained form, for m>1. They are x-flat systems. We provide a system of first order PDE's to be solved in order to find all x-flat outputs, for m=1, respectively all minimal x-flat outputs, for m>1. We illustrate our results by examples, in particular by an application to a mechanical system: the coin rolling without slipping on a moving table.
This paper addresses the problem of static output feedback (SOF) stabilization for discrete-time LTI systems. We approach this problem using the recently developed periodically time-varying memory state-feedback controller (PTVMSFC) design scheme. A bilinear matrix inequality (BMI) condition which uses a pre-designed PTVMSFC is developed to design the periodically time-varying memory SOF controller (PTVMSOFC). The BMI condition can be solved by using BMI solvers. Alternatively, we can apply two-steps and iterative linear matrix inequality algorithms that alternate between the PTVMSFC and PTVMS…
The dual iteration was introduced in a conference paper in 1997 by Iwasaki as an iterative and heuristic procedure for the challenging and non-convex design of static output-feedback controllers. We recall in detail its essential ingredients and go beyond the work of Iwasaki by demonstrating that the framework of linear fractional representations allows for a seamless extension of the dual iteration to output-feedback designs of practical relevance, such as the design of robust or robust gain-scheduled controllers. In the paper of Iwasaki, the dual iteration is solely based on, and motivated b…
This paper investigates the design of decentralized output-feedback controllers for a class of a large scale switched nonlinear systems under arbitrary switching laws. A global large scale switched system can be split into a set of smaller interconnected switched Takagi Sugeno fuzzy subsystems. Then, in order to stabilize the overall closed-loop system, a set of switched non-PDC static output controllers is employed. The latter is designed based on Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) conditions obtained from a multiple switched non quadratic-like Lyapunov candidate function. The controllers propose…
Using Hermite's formulation of polynomial stability conditions, static output feedback (SOF) controller design can be formulated as a polynomial matrix inequality (PMI), a (generally nonconvex) nonlinear semidefinite programming problem that can be solved (locally) with PENNON, an implementation of a penalty method. Typically, Hermite SOF PMI problems are badly scaled and experiments reveal that this has a negative impact on the overall performance of the solver. In this note we recall the algebraic interpretation of Hermite's quadratic form as a particular Bezoutian and we use results on poly…
We study the problem of feedback control for skew-symmetric and skew-Hamiltonian transfer functions using skew-symmetric controllers. This extends work of Helmke, et al., who studied static symmetric feedback control of symmetric and Hamiltonian linear systems. We identify spaces of linear systems with symmetry as natural subvarieties of the moduli space of rational curves in a Grassmannian, give necessary and sufficient conditions for pole placement by static skew-symmetric complex feedback, and use Schubert calculus for the orthogonal Grassmannian to count the number of complex feedback laws…
We here specialize the well known Positive Real Lemma (also known as the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov Lemma) to complex matrix-valued rational functions, (i) generalized positive even and (ii) odd. On the way we characterize the (non) minimality of realization of arbitrary systems through (i) the corresponding state matrix and (ii) moving the poles by applying static output feedback. We then explore the application of static output feedback to both generalized positive even and to odd functions.
In this paper, we characterize the set of static-state feedbacks that stabilize a given continuous linear-time invariant system pair using dissipative Hamiltonian matrices. This characterization results in a parametrization of feedbacks in terms of skew-symmetric and symmetric positive semidefinite matrices, and leads to a semidefinite program that computes a static-state stabilizing feedback. This characterization also allows us to propose an algorithm that computes minimal-norm static feedbacks. The theoretical results extend to the static-output feedback (SOF) problem, and we also propose a…
The Kreiss constant $K(A)$ of a stable matrix $A$ conveys information about the transient behavior of system trajectories in response to initial conditions. We present an efficient way to compute the Kreiss constant $K(A)$, and we show how feedback can be employed to make the Kreiss constant $K(A_{cl})$ in closed loop significantly smaller. This is expected to reduce transients in the closed loop trajectories. The proposed approached is compared to potential competing techniques.
In the present work, sufficient conditions for global stabilization of nonlinear uncertain systems by means of discrete-delay static output feedback are presented. Illustrating examples show the efficiency of the proposed control strategy.
Indirect trajectory optimization methods such as Differential Dynamic Programming (DDP) have found considerable success when only planning under dynamic feasibility constraints. Meanwhile, nonlinear programming (NLP) has been the state-of-the-art approach when faced with additional constraints (e.g., control bounds, obstacle avoidance). However, a na$ï$ve implementation of NLP algorithms, e.g., shooting-based sequential quadratic programming (SQP), may suffer from slow convergence -- caused from natural instabilities of the underlying system manifesting as poor numerical stability within the o…
We consider the problem of optimizing the steady state of a dynamical system in closed loop. Conventionally, the design of feedback optimization control laws assumes that the system is stationary. However, in reality, the dynamics of the (slow) iterative optimization routines can interfere with the (fast) system dynamics. We provide a study of the stability and convergence of these feedback optimization setups in closed loop with the underlying plant, via a custom-tailored singular perturbation analysis result. Our study is particularly geared towards applications in power systems and the ques…
The issue of realization of the transfer functions of Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems (LQSSs) is of fundamental importance for the practical applications of such systems, especially as coherent controllers for other quantum systems. So far, most works that addressed this problem have used cascade realizations. In this work, a new method is proposed, where the transfer function of a LQSS is realized by a series of a pre-processing linear static network, a reduced LQSS, and a post-processing linear static network. The introduction of the pre- and post-processing static networks leaves an inter…
This note is concerned with the presentation of new delay-dependent dissipativity-based convex conditions (expressed in the form of linear matrix inequalities) for the design of static output feedback (SOF) stabilizing gains for open-loop unstable discrete-time systems with input time-varying delays. A modified definition of QSR-dissipativity combined with the use of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals as storage functions and the application of Finsler's Lemma lead to the gathering of non-interactive design conditions. We show that, differently from most works dealing with controller design for t…
We provide some new necessary and sufficient conditions which guarantee arbitrary pole placement of a particular linear system over the complex numbers. We exhibit a non-trivial real linear system which is not controllable by real static output feedback and discuss a conjecture from algebraic geometry concerning the existence of real linear systems for which all static feedback laws are real.
We consider the chemostat model with the substrate concentration as the single measurement. We propose a control strategy that drives the system at a steady state maximizing the gas production without the knowledge of the specific growth rate. Our approach separates the extremum seeking problem from the feedback control problem such that each of the two subproblems can be solved with relatively simple algorithms. We are then free to choose any numerical optimization algorithm. We give a demonstration for two choices: one is based on slow-fast dynamics and numerical continuation, the other is a…
One of the fundamental open problems in control theory is that of the stabilization of a linear time invariant dynamical system through static output feedback. We are given a linear dynamical system defined through \begin{align*} \mydot{w} &= Aw + Bu y &= Cw . \end{align*} The problem is to find, if it exists, a feedback $u=Ky$ such that the matrix $A+BKC$ has all its eigenvalues in the complex left half plane and, if such a feedback does not exist, to prove that it does not. Substantial progress has not been made on the computational aspect of the solution to this problem. In this paper we co…
The plant to be stabilized is a system node $Σ$ with generating triple $(A,B,C)$ and transfer function $\bf G$, where $A$ generates a contraction semigroup on the Hilbert space $X$. The control and observation operators $B$ and $C$ may be unbounded and they are not assumed to be admissible. The crucial assumption is that there exists a bounded operator $E$ such that, if we replace ${\bf G}(s)$ by ${\bf G}(s)+E$, the new system $Σ_E$ becomes impedance passive. An easier case is when $\bf G$ is already impedance passive and a special case is when \mm $Σ$ has colocated sensors and actuators. Such…
In this paper, the notion of robust strict QSR-dissipativity is applied to solve the static output feedback control problem for a class of continuous-time nonlinear rational systems subject to input saturation and bounded parametric uncertainties. A local dissipativity condition is combined with generalized sector conditions to formulate the synthesis of a stabilizing controller in terms of linear matrix inequalities. The strategy applies to general static output feedback design without any restrictions on the plant output equation. An iterative algorithm based on linear matrix inequalities is…
In this paper, we propose state- and static output-feedback generalized guaranteed cost control (GCC) approaches for discrete-time linear systems subject to norm-bounded structured parametric uncertainties. This method enables the convex synthesis for a more general class of systems, where uncertainties are uncorrelated block diagonal, and no feed-through uncertainty is multiplicative with control input ones. It also provides necessary and sufficient conditions for state-feedback and sufficient conditions for static output-feedback. We also present a comparative study among the proposed contro…
The minimum-gain eigenvalue assignment/pole placement problem (MGEAP) is a classical problem in LTI systems with static state feedback. In this paper, we study the MGEAP when the state feedback has arbitrary sparsity constraints. We formulate the sparse MGEAP problem as an equality-constrained optimization problem and present an analytical characterization of its locally optimal solution in terms of eigenvector matrices of the closed loop system. This result is used to provide a geometric interpretation of the solution of the non-sparse MGEAP, thereby providing additional insights for this cla…

For linear time-invariant (LTI) systems, the design of an optimal controller is a commonly encountered problem in many applications. Among all the optimization approaches available, the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) methodology certainly garners much attention and interest. As is well-known, standard numerical tools in linear algebra are readily available which enable the determination of the optimal static LQR feedback gain matrix when all the system state variables are measurable. However, in various certain scenarios where some of the system state variables are not measurable, and conseq…

We propose a framework for synthesizing a feedback control policy that maximizes the region of attraction (ROA) of a closed-loop nonlinear dynamical system. Our synthesis technique relies on stochastic optimization, which involves computation of an objective function capturing the ROA for a feedback control law. We employ a machine learning technique based on deep neural network to estimate the ROA for a given feedback controller. Overall, our technique is capable of synthesizing a controller co-optimizing traditional control objectives like LQR cost together with ROA. We demonstrate the effic…
In this work, we revisit the Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) optimal control problem from a behavioral perspective. Motivated by the suitability of behavioral models for data-driven control, we begin with a reformulation of the LQG problem in the space of input-output behaviors and obtain a complete characterization of the optimal solutions. In particular, we show that the optimal LQG controller can be expressed as a static behavioral-feedback gain, thereby eliminating the need for dynamic state estimation characteristic of state space methods. The static form of the optimal LQG gain also make…
