In this paper, we propose two automated text processing frameworks specifically designed to analyze online reviews. The objective of the first framework is to summarize the reviews dataset by extracting essential sentence. This is performed by converting sentences into numerical vectors and clustering them using a community detection algorithm based on their similarity levels. Afterwards, a correlation score is measured for each sentence to determine its importance level in each cluster and assign it as a tag for that community. The second framework is based on a question-answering neural network model trained to extract answers to multiple different questions. The collected answers are effectively clustered to find multiple distinct answers to a single question that might be asked by a customer. The proposed frameworks are shown to be more comprehensive than existing reviews processing solutions.

Relation extraction (RE) models have been challenged by their reliance on training data with expensive annotations. Considering that summarization tasks aim at acquiring concise expressions of synoptical information from the longer context, these tasks naturally align with the objective of RE, i.e., extracting a kind of synoptical information that describes the relation of entity mentions. We present SuRE, which converts RE into a summarization formulation. SuRE leads to more precise and resource-efficient RE based on indirect supervision from summarization tasks. To achieve this goal, we deve…
We present a novel unsupervised framework for focused meeting summarization that views the problem as an instance of relation extraction. We adapt an existing in-domain relation learner (Chen et al., 2011) by exploiting a set of task-specific constraints and features. We evaluate the approach on a decision summarization task and show that it outperforms unsupervised utterance-level extractive summarization baselines as well as an existing generic relation-extraction-based summarization method. Moreover, our approach produces summaries competitive with those generated by supervised methods in t…

The CrisisFACTS Track aims to tackle challenges such as multi-stream fact-finding in the domain of event tracking; participants' systems extract important facts from several disaster-related events while incorporating the temporal order. We propose a combination of retrieval, reranking, and the well-known Integer Linear Programming (ILP) and Maximal Marginal Relevance (MMR) frameworks. In the former two modules, we explore various methods including an entity-based baseline, pre-trained and fine-tuned Question Answering systems, and ColBERT. We then use the latter module as an extractive summar…
Professionals in modern healthcare systems are increasingly burdened by documentation workloads. Documentation of the initial patient anamnesis is particularly relevant, forming the basis of successful further diagnostic measures. However, manually prepared notes are inherently unstructured and often incomplete. In this paper, we investigate the potential of modern NLP techniques to support doctors in this matter. We present a dataset of German patient monologues, and formulate a well-defined information extraction task under the constraints of real-world utility and practicality. In addition,…

Information extraction from scholarly articles is a challenging task due to the sizable document length and implicit information hidden in text, figures, and citations. Scholarly information extraction has various applications in exploration, archival, and curation services for digital libraries and knowledge management systems. We present MORTY, an information extraction technique that creates structured summaries of text from scholarly articles. Our approach condenses the article's full-text to property-value pairs as a segmented text snippet called structured summary. We also present a siza…
We develop an abstractive summarization framework independent of labeled data for multiple heterogeneous documents. Unlike existing multi-document summarization methods, our framework processes documents telling different stories instead of documents on the same topic. We also enhance an existing sentence fusion method with a uni-directional language model to prioritize fused sentences with higher sentence probability with the goal of increasing readability. Lastly, we construct a total of twelve dataset variations based on CNN/Daily Mail and the NewsRoom datasets, where each document group co…

Natural reading orders of words are crucial for information extraction from form-like documents. Despite recent advances in Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) on modeling spatial layout patterns of documents, they have limited ability to capture reading orders of given word-level node representations in a graph. We propose Reading Order Equivariant Positional Encoding (ROPE), a new positional encoding technique designed to apprehend the sequential presentation of words in documents. ROPE generates unique reading order codes for neighboring words relative to the target word given a word-level …

Neural abstractive summarization models are prone to generate content inconsistent with the source document, i.e. unfaithful. Existing automatic metrics do not capture such mistakes effectively. We tackle the problem of evaluating faithfulness of a generated summary given its source document. We first collected human annotations of faithfulness for outputs from numerous models on two datasets. We find that current models exhibit a trade-off between abstractiveness and faithfulness: outputs with less word overlap with the source document are more likely to be unfaithful. Next, we propose an aut…

Novel information retrieval methods to identify citations relevant to a clinical topic can overcome the knowledge gap existing between the primary literature (MEDLINE) and online clinical knowledge resources such as UpToDate. Searching the MEDLINE database directly or with query expansion methods returns a large number of citations that are not relevant to the query. The current study presents a citation retrieval system that retrieves citations for evidence-based clinical knowledge summarization. This approach combines query expansion, concept-based screening algorithm, and concept-based vect…

Relation extraction is the problem of classifying the relationship between two entities in a given sentence. Distant Supervision (DS) is a popular technique for developing relation extractors starting with limited supervision. We note that most of the sentences in the distant supervision relation extraction setting are very long and may benefit from word attention for better sentence representation. Our contributions in this paper are threefold. Firstly, we propose two novel word attention models for distantly- supervised relation extraction: (1) a Bi-directional Gated Recurrent Unit (Bi-GRU) …

We investigate the incorporation of character-based word representations into a standard CNN-based relation extraction model. We experiment with two common neural architectures, CNN and LSTM, to learn word vector representations from character embeddings. Through a task on the BioCreative-V CDR corpus, extracting relationships between chemicals and diseases, we show that models exploiting the character-based word representations improve on models that do not use this information, obtaining state-of-the-art result relative to previous neural approaches.
A lot of prior work on event extraction has exploited a variety of features to represent events. Such methods have several drawbacks: 1) the features are often specific for a particular domain and do not generalize well; 2) the features are derived from various linguistic analyses and are error-prone; and 3) some features may be expensive and require domain expert. In this paper, we develop a Chinese event extraction system that uses word embedding vectors to represent language, and deep neural networks to learn the abstract feature representation in order to greatly reduce the effort of featu…

We present our method for tackling the legal case retrieval task of the Competition on Legal Information Extraction/Entailment 2019. Our approach is based on the idea that summarization is important for retrieval. On one hand, we adopt a summarization based model called encoded summarization which encodes a given document into continuous vector space which embeds the summary properties of the document. We utilize the resource of COLIEE 2018 on which we train the document representation model. On the other hand, we extract lexical features on different parts of a given query and its candidates.…
The knowledge extraction task is to extract triple relations (head entity-relation-tail entity) from unstructured text data. The existing knowledge extraction methods are divided into "pipeline" method and joint extraction method. The "pipeline" method is to separate named entity recognition and entity relationship extraction and use their own modules to extract them. Although this method has better flexibility, the training speed is slow. The learning model of joint extraction is an end-to-end model implemented by neural network to realize entity recognition and relationship extraction at the…
Highlighting while reading is a natural behavior for people to track salient content of a document. It would be desirable to teach an extractive summarizer to do the same. However, a major obstacle to the development of a supervised summarizer is the lack of ground-truth. Manual annotation of extraction units is cost-prohibitive, whereas acquiring labels by automatically aligning human abstracts and source documents can yield inferior results. In this paper we describe a novel framework to guide a supervised, extractive summarization system with question-answering rewards. We argue that qualit…
To make an interactive guidance mechanism for document retrieval systems, we developed a user-interface which presents users the visualized map of topics at each stage of retrieval process. Topic words are automatically extracted by frequency analysis and the strength of the relationships between topic words is measured by their co-occurrence. A major factor affecting a user's impression of a given topic word graph is the balance between common topic words and specific topic words. By using frequency classes for topic word extraction, we made it possible to select well-balanced set of topic wo…
This paper describes our submission to ICASSP 2023 MUG Challenge Track 4, Keyphrase Extraction, which aims to extract keyphrases most relevant to the conference theme from conference materials. In addition, we increase the amount of input information that the model can accept at one time by fusing multiple preprocessed sentences into one segment. We replace the loss function w…

Forms are a common type of document in real life and carry rich information through textual contents and the organizational structure. To realize automatic processing of forms, word grouping and relation extraction are two fundamental and crucial steps after preliminary processing of optical character reader (OCR). Word grouping is to aggregate words that belong to the same semantic entity, and relation extraction is to predict the links between semantic entities. Existing works treat them as two individual tasks, but these two tasks are correlated and can reinforce each other. The grouping pr…

Given the recent advances and progress in Natural Language Processing (NLP), extraction of semantic relationships has been at the top of the research agenda in the last few years. This work has been mainly motivated by the fact that building knowledge graphs (KG) and bases (KB), as a key ingredient of intelligent applications, is a never-ending challenge, since new knowledge needs to be harvested while old knowledge needs to be revised. Currently, approaches towards relation extraction from text are dominated by neural models practicing some sort of distant (weak) supervision in machine learni…
In this paper, we study abstractive review summarization.Observing that review summaries often consist of aspect words, opinion words and context words, we propose a two-stage reinforcement learning approach, which first predicts the output word type from the three types, and then leverages the predicted word type to generate the final word distribution.Experimental results on two Amazon product review datasets demonstrate that our method can consistently outperform several strong baseline approaches based on ROUGE scores.
Graph-based extractive document summarization relies on the quality of the sentence similarity graph. Bag-of-words or tf-idf based sentence similarity uses exact word matching, but fails to measure the semantic similarity between individual words or to consider the semantic structure of sentences. In order to improve the similarity measure between sentences, we employ off-the-shelf deep embedding features and tf-idf features, and introduce a new text similarity metric. An improved sentence similarity graph is built and used in a submodular objective function for extractive summarization, which…

Traditional approaches to extractive summarization rely heavily on human-engineered features. In this work we propose a data-driven approach based on neural networks and continuous sentence features. We develop a general framework for single-document summarization composed of a hierarchical document encoder and an attention-based extractor. This architecture allows us to develop different classes of summarization models which can extract sentences or words. We train our models on large scale corpora containing hundreds of thousands of document-summary pairs. Experimental results on two summari…
Sequence-to-sequence models provide a viable new approach to generative summarization, allowing models that are no longer limited to simply selecting and recombining sentences from the original text. However, these models have three drawbacks: their grasp of the details of the original text is often inaccurate, and the text generated by such models often has repetitions, while it is difficult to handle words that are beyond the word list. In this paper, we propose a new architecture that combines reinforcement learning and adversarial generative networks to enhance the sequence-to-sequence att…
We advance the state-of-the-art in unsupervised abstractive dialogue summarization by utilizing multi-sentence compression graphs. Robustness of our method is demonstrated on datasets across multiple domains, including meetings, interviews, movie scripts, and day-to-day conversations. We also identify possible avenues to augment our heuristic-based system with deep learning. We open-source our code, to provide a strong, reproducible baseline for future researc…
ROUGE is a widely adopted, automatic evaluation measure for text summarization. While it has been shown to correlate well with human judgements, it is biased towards surface lexical similarities. This makes it unsuitable for the evaluation of abstractive summarization, or summaries with substantial paraphrasing. We study the effectiveness of word embeddings to overcome this disadvantage of ROUGE. Specifically, instead of measuring lexical overlaps, word embeddings are used to compute the semantic similarity of the words used in summaries instead. Our experimental results show that our proposal…
As the number of documents on the web is growing exponentially, multi-document summarization is becoming more and more important since it can provide the main ideas in a document set in short time. In this paper, we present an unsupervised centroid-based document-level reconstruction framework using distributed bag of words model. Specifically, our approach selects summary sentences in order to minimize the reconstruction error between the summary and the documents. We apply sentence selection and beam search, to further improve the performance of our model. Experimental results on two differe…
Text summarization is a process to produce an abstract or a summary by selecting significant portion of the information from one or more texts. In an automatic text summarization process, a text is given to the computer and the computer returns a shorter less redundant extract or abstract of the original text(s). Many techniques have been developed for summarizing English text(s). But, a very few attempts have been made for Bengali text summarization. This paper presents a method for Bengali text summarization which extracts important sentences from a Bengali document to produce a summary.
Automatic abstractive text summarization is an important and challenging research topic of natural language processing. Among many widely used languages, the Chinese language has a special property that a Chinese character contains rich information comparable to a word. Existing Chinese text summarization methods, either adopt totally character-based or word-based representations, fail to fully exploit the information carried by both representations. To accurately capture the essence of articles, we propose a hybrid word-character approach (HWC) which preserves the advantages of both word-base…

Automatic sentence summarization produces a shorter version of a sentence, while preserving its most important information. A good summary is characterized by language fluency and high information overlap with the source sentence. We model these two aspects in an unsupervised objective function, consisting of language modeling and semantic similarity metrics. We search for a high-scoring summary by discrete optimization. Our proposed method achieves a new state-of-the art for unsupervised sentence summarization according to ROUGE scores. Additionally, we demonstrate that the commonly reported …

Transformer-based models have achieved state-of-the-art performance on short-input summarization. However, they still struggle with summarizing longer text. In this paper, we present DYLE, a novel dynamic latent extraction approach for abstractive long-input summarization. DYLE jointly trains an extractor and a generator and treats the extracted text snippets as the latent variable, allowing dynamic snippet-level attention weights during decoding. To provide adequate supervision, we propose simple yet effective heuristics for oracle extraction as well as a consistency loss term, which encourag…
We present Semantic WordRank (SWR), an unsupervised method for generating an extractive summary of a single document. Built on a weighted word graph with semantic and co-occurrence edges, SWR scores sentences using an article-structure-biased PageRank algorithm with a Softplus function adjustment, and promotes topic diversity using spectral subtopic clustering under the Word-Movers-Distance metric. We evaluate SWR on the DUC-02 and SummBank datasets and show that SWR produces better summaries than the state-of-the-art algorithms over DUC-02 under common ROUGE measures. We then show that, under…

To address this problem, we propose an unsupervised model that uses distributed representation of words as well as domain knowledge to extract the appropriate context from the reference paper. Evaluation results show the effectiveness of our model by significantly outperforming the state-of-the-art. We furthermore demonstrate how an effective contextualization method results in improving citation-based summa…
In this work, we introduce temporal hierarchies to the sequence to sequence (seq2seq) model to tackle the problem of abstractive summarization of scientific articles. The proposed Multiple Timescale model of the Gated Recurrent Unit (MTGRU) is implemented in the encoder-decoder setting to better deal with the presence of multiple compositionalities in larger texts. The proposed model is compared to the conventional RNN encoder-decoder, and the results demonstrate that our model trains faster and shows significant performance gains. The results also show that the temporal hierarchies help impro…

Copy mechanism allows sequence-to-sequence models to choose words from the input and put them directly into the output, which is finding increasing use in abstractive summarization. However, since there is no explicit delimiter in Chinese sentences, most existing models for Chinese abstractive summarization can only perform character copy, resulting in inefficient. To solve this problem, we propose a lexicon-constrained copying network that models multi-granularity in both encoder and decoder. On the source side, words and characters are aggregated into the same input memory using a Transforme…

Since the amount of information on the internet is growing rapidly, it is not easy for a user to find relevant information for his/her query. To tackle this issue, much attention has been paid to Automatic Document Summarization. The key point in any successful document summarizer is a good document representation. The traditional approaches based on word overlapping mostly fail to produce that kind of representation. Word embedding, distributed representation of words, has shown an excellent performance that allows words to match on semantic level. Naively concatenating word embeddings makes …

Current research in automatic single document summarization is dominated by two effective, yet naive approaches: summarization by sentence extraction, and headline generation via bag-of-words models. While successful in some tasks, neither of these models is able to adequately capture the large set of linguistic devices utilized by humans when they produce summaries. One possible explanation for the widespread use of these models is that good techniques have been developed to extract appropriate training data for them from existing document/abstract and document/headline corpora. We believe th…

In this paper, in order to improve the semantic relevance of abstractive summaries, we adopt the WordNet based sentence ranking algorithm to extract the sentences which are most semantically to one text. Text summarization is an interesting area for researchers to develop new techniques to provide human like summaries for vast amounts of information. Summarization techniques tend to focus on providing accurate representation of content, and often the tone of the content is ignored. Tone of the content sets a baseline for how a reader perceives the content. As such being able to generate summary with tone that is appropriate for the reader is important. In our work we implement Maximal Marginal Relevance [MMR] based multi-document text summarization and propose a naive model to change tone of t…

We propose a new length-controllable abstractive summarization model. Recent state-of-the-art abstractive summarization models based on encoder-decoder models generate only one summary per source text. However, controllable summarization, especially of the length, is an important aspect for practical applications. Previous studies on length-controllable abstractive summarization incorporate length embeddings in the decoder module for controlling the summary length. Text Summarization is the task of condensing long text into just a handful of sentences. Many approaches have been proposed for this task, some of the very first were building statistical models (Extractive Methods) capable of selecting important words and copying them to the output, however these models lacked the ability to paraphrase sentences, as they simply select important words without actually understanding their contexts nor understanding their meaning, here comes the use of Deep Learning based architectures (Abstractive Methods), which effectively tries to understand the meaning of s…

Extractive methods have been proven effective in automatic document summarization. Previous works perform this task by identifying informative contents at sentence level. However, it is unclear whether performing extraction at sentence level is the best solution. Pointer-generator network is an extremely popular method of text summarization. More recent works in this domain still build on top of the baseline pointer generator by augmenting a content selection phase, or by decomposing the decoder into a contextual network and a language model. In our work, we first thoroughly investigate why the pointer-generator network is unable to generate novel words, and then address that by adding…

Encoder-decoder models have been widely used to solve sequence to sequence prediction tasks. However current approaches suffer from two shortcomings. First, the encoders compute a representation of each word taking into account only the history of the words it has read so far, yielding suboptimal representations. Second, current decoders utilize large vocabularies in order to minimize the problem of unknown words, resulting in slow decoding times. In this paper we address both shortcomings. Towards this goal, we first introduce a simple mechanism that first reads the input sequence before comm…
