SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) is a proposed experiment to be installed at CERN, with the aim of exploring the high intensity beam frontier to investigate the so-called Hidden sector. Since the SPS proton beam interacting with the SHiP high density target is expected to produce a large neutrino flux, the experiment will also study neutrino physics with unprecedented statistics. A dedicated Scattering and Neutrino Detector (SND) is thus being designed. It consists of a nuclear emulsion target and a tracking fibres detector in magnetic field followed by a Muon Identification System. The Muon System is composed of iron filters interleaved with tracking planes, instrumented with Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) operated in avalanche mode. Each plane consists of three gaps readout by two planes of perpendicular strips. The RPC readout electronics is being developed. It is based on the use of front-end Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) connected to a concentration system, transmitting data serially at high speed via optical link to the data acquisition and control system. A small-scale prototype of the SHiP Muon Identification System, with five RPC planes consisting of one large gap each, has been produced and exposed at CERN H4 in a test beam.
We constructed a new time-of-flight (TOF) detector consisting of resistive plate chambers (RPCs) to measure particle energy in the BGOegg experiment. The BGOegg-RPC has a unique feature which enables us to cover a large area with a small number of readout channels. For this purpose, we developed the RPC with a strip size of 2.5 cm $\times$ 100 cm. The BGOegg-RPC covers an area of 320 cm $\times$ 200 cm with only 256 channels of readout electronics. In case of large readout RPCs, an originated signal is distorted and dispersed during propagation. In addition, there happens a signal reflection a…
We report on studies of fast triggering and high-precision tracking using Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). Two beam tests were carried out with the 180 GeV muon beam at CERN using RPCs with gas gaps of 1.00 or 1.15 mm and equipped with readout strips with 1.27 mm pitch. This is the first beam test of RPCs with fine-pitch readout strips that explores simultaneously precision tracking and triggering capabilities. RPC signals were acquired with precision timing and charge integrating readout electronics at both ends of the strips. The time resolution was measured to be better than 600 ps and the …
Plastic scintillator detectors have been extensively used in particle physics experiments for decades. A large-scale detector is typically arranged as an array of staggered long bars which provide a fast trigger signal and/or particle identification via time-of-flight measurements. Scintillation light is collected by photosensors coupled to both ends of every bar. In this article, we present our study on a direct replacement of commonly used vacuum photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) by arrays of large-area silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). An SiPM array which is directly coupled to the scintillator …
This work reports a cost-effective, multi-parameter readout and data-acquisition system for a muon scattering tomography system based on Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). Initial test measurements with a prototype Resistive Plate Chamber were performed using a low-cost FPGA coupled to the NINO ASIC for the event selection and handling data. The Time over-Threshold (TOT) property of NINO ASICs has been used to achieve better position information and achieve precise tracking capability. In our test setup, we try to build an imaging setup using a single RPC and lead block, which covers some areas …
The light yield and the time resolution of different types of 3 m long scintillating bars instrumented with wavelength shifting fibres and read out by different models of silicon photomultipliers have been measured at a test beam at the T9 area at the CERN Proton Synchrotron. The results obtained with different configurations are presented. A time resolution better than 800 ps, constant along the bar length within 20%, and a light yield of ~ 140 (70) photoelectrons are obtained for bars 3 m long, 4.5 (5) cm wide and 2 (0.7) cm thick. These results nicely match the requirements for the Muon Det…
The reduction of the average charge per count in the gas along with the capability to discriminate very small signals from noise can allow an efficient and long-term Resistive Plate Chamber detector operation in high radiation background environment. This goal has been reached during the R&D program of the BIS78 upgrade project of the ATLAS detector at LHC through the deep integration of a fast (100 ps peaking time) and sensitive (as small as 100 `V threshold) Front- End electronics (FE) with a very large size detector structure. This innovative RPC integration concept pivots on a newly concei…
The Digital Hadron Calorimeter (DHCAL) is a large prototype of an imaging calorimeter using Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) as active media. The readout is segmented into 1\times1 cm2 pads, each with a single bit resolution, hence the denomination of digital. The total channel count is close to 500,000. The DHCAL construction and assembly was completed in fall 2010, followed by a series of test beam campaigns in the FTBF test beam at Fermilab. In this paper we report on the analysis of events collected with the broadband muon beam. These events are utilized to geometrically align the layers ho…
A novel hadron calorimeter is being developed for future lepton colliding beam detectors. The calorimeter is optimized for the application of Particle Flow Algorithms (PFAs) to the measurement of hadronic jets and features a very finely segmented readout with 1 x 1 cm2 cells. The active media of the calorimeter are Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) with a digital, i.e. one-bit, readout. To first order the energy of incident particles in this calorimeter is reconstructed as being proportional to the number of pads with a signal over a given threshold. A large-scale prototype calorimeter with appr…
The DHCAL, the Digital Hadron Calorimeter, is a prototype calorimeter based on Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). The design emphasizes the imaging capabilities of the detector in an effort to optimize the calorimeter for the application of Particle Flow Algorithms (PFAs) to the reconstruction of hadronic jet energies in a colliding beam environment. The readout of the chambers is segmented into 1 x 1 cm2 pads, each read out with a 1-bit (single threshold) resolution. The prototype with approximately 500,000 readout channels underwent extensive testing in both the Fermilab and CERN test beams. T…

Glass based Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) are going to be used as an active element in the Iron Calorimeter (ICAL) experiment at the India based Neutrino Observatory (INO), which is being constructed to study atmospheric neutrinos. Though the RPC detector operational parameters are more or less finalized, the readout electronics is being developed using various technologies. The ICAL experiment will consist of about 29,000 RPC detectors of 2 m $\times$ 2 m in size with each detector having 64 readout channels both in the X and Y directions. The present study focusses on multi-channel electro…
An Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), called RIGEL, designed for the sparse readout of a Silicon Pixel Drift Detector (PixDD) for space applications is presented. The low leakage current (less than 1 pA at +20 °C) and anode capacitance (less than 40 fF) of each pixel (300 um x 300 um) of the detector, combined with a low-noise electronics readout, allow to reach a high spectroscopic resolution performance even at room temperature. The RIGEL ASIC front-end architecture is composed by a 2-D matrix of 128 readout pixel cells (RPCs), arranged to host, in a 300 um-sided square area, a c…
The ARGO-YBJ experiment has been in stable data taking from November 2007 till February 2013 at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Observatory (4300 m a.s.l.). The detector consists of a single layer of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) ( about 6700 m^2}) operated in streamer mode. The signal pick-up is obtained by means of strips facing one side of the gas volume. The digital readout of the signals, while allows a high space-time resolution in the shower front reconstruction, limits the measurable energy to a few hundred TeV. In order to fully investigate the 1-10 PeV region, an analog readout has been …
During Phase-2 of the LHC, known as the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), the accelerator will increase its instantaneous luminosity to 5 $\times$ 10$^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, delivering an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb$^{-1}$ over 10 years of operation starting from 2027. In view of the HL-LHC, the CMS muon system will be upgraded to sustain efficient muon triggering and reconstruction performance. Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) serve as dedicated detectors for muon triggering due to their excellent timing resolution, and will extend $|η|$ (pseudorapidity) up to a region of 2.4. Before Long …
Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) can be produced in large foils and molded in different shapes. The possibility to create cylindrical layers has opened the opportunity to use such detector as internal tracker at collider experiments. One crucial item is to have low material budget in the active area, so the supporting structure of anode and cathode must be light. KLOE2 collaboration has built the first Cylindrical GEM detector with honeycomb material with carbon fiber skins produced at high temperature. BESIII is developing an innovative CGEM detector with charge and time readout. Among several…
The DsTau project proposes to study tau-neutrino production in high-energy proton interactions. The outcome of this experiment are prerequisite for measuring the $ν_τ$ charged-current cross section that has never been well measured. Precisely measuring the cross section would enable testing of lepton universality in $ν_τ$ scattering and it also has practical implications for neutrino oscillation experiments and high-energy astrophysical $ν_τ$ observations. $D_s$ mesons, the source of tau neutrinos, following high-energy proton interactions will be studied by a novel approach to detect the doub…
