We introduce a physically-motivated model of the matter power spectrum, based on the halo model and perturbation theory. This model achieves 1\% accuracy on all $k-$scales between $k=0.02h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ to $k=1h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$. Our key ansatz is that the number density of halos depends on the non-linear density contrast filtered on some unknown scale $R$. Using the Effective Field Theory of Large Scale Structure to evaluate the two-halo term, we obtain a model for the power spectrum with only two fitting parameters: $R$ and the effective `sound speed', which encapsulates small-scale physics. This is tested with two suites of cosmological simulations across a broad range of cosmologies and found to be highly accurate. Due to its physical motivation, the statistics can be easily extended beyond the power spectrum; we additionally derive the one-loop covariance matrices of cluster counts and their combination with the matter power spectrum. This yields a significantly better fit to simulations than previous models, and includes a new model for super-sample effects, which is rigorously tested with separate universe simulations. At low redshift, we find a significant ($\sim 10\%$) exclusion covariance from accounting for the finite size of halos which has not previously been modeled. Such power spectrum and covariance models will enable joint analysis of upcoming large-scale structure surveys, gravitational lensing surveys and cosmic microwave background maps on scales down to the non-linear scale. We provide a publicly released Python code.
We present a new technique for creating mock catalogues of the individual stars that make up the accreted component of stellar haloes in cosmological simulations and show how the catalogues can be used to test and interpret observational data. The catalogues are constructed from a combination of methods. A semi-analytic galaxy formation model is used to calculate the star formation history in haloes in an N-body simulation and dark matter particles are tagged with this stellar mass. The tags are converted into individual stars using a stellar population synthesis model to obtain the number den…
We investigate machine learning (ML) techniques for predicting the number of galaxies (N_gal) that occupy a halo, given the halo's properties. These types of mappings are crucial for constructing the mock galaxy catalogs necessary for analyses of large-scale structure. The ML techniques proposed here distinguish themselves from traditional halo occupation distribution (HOD) modeling as they do not assume a prescribed relationship between halo properties and N_gal. In addition, our ML approaches are only dependent on parent halo properties (like HOD methods), which are advantageous over subhalo…
Cosmological N-body simulations rank among the most computationally intensive efforts today. A key challenge is the analysis of structure, substructure, and the merger history for many billions of compact particle clusters, called halos. Effectively representing the merging history of halos is essential for many galaxy formation models used to generate synthetic sky catalogs, an important application of modern cosmological simulations. Generating realistic mock catalogs requires computing the halo formation history from simulations with large volumes and billions of halos over many time steps,…
How well can we infer host dark matter halo masses of individual galaxies? Based on the halo occupation distribution (HOD) framework, we analytically compute the number of neighboring galaxies within a cylinder of some redshift interval and radius in transverse comoving distance. The result is used to derive the conditional probability distribution function (PDF) of the host halo mass of a galaxy, given the neighboring galaxy counts. We compare our analytic results with those obtained using a realistic mock galaxy catalog, finding reasonable agreements. We find the optimal cylinder radius to b…
In order to extract full cosmological information from next-generation large and high-precision weak lensing (WL) surveys (e.g. Euclid, Roman, LSST), higher-order statistics that probe the small-scale, non-linear regime of large scale structure (LSS) need to be utilized. WL peak counts, which trace overdensities in the cosmic web, are one promising and simple statistic for constraining cosmological parameters. The physical origin of WL peaks have previously been linked to dark matter halos along the line of sight and this peak-halo connection has been used to develop various semi-analytic halo…
The Cold Dark Matter paradigm predicts vast numbers of dark matter sub-halos to be orbiting in galactic halos. The sub-halos are detectable through the gaps they create gaps in stellar streams. The gap-rate is an integral over the density of sub-halos, their mass function, velocity distribution and the dynamical age of the stream. The rate of visible gap creation is a function of the width of the stream. The available data for four streams: the NW stream of M31, the Pal~5 stream, the Orphan Stream and the Eastern Banded Structure, are compared to the LCDM predicted relation. We find a remarkab…
Dark matter sub-halos create gaps in the stellar streams orbiting in the halos of galaxies. We evaluate the sub-halo stream crossing integral with the guidance of simulations to find that the linear rate of gap creation, R_gap, in a typical Cold Dark Matter (CDM) galactic halo at 100 kpc is R_gap = 0.0066 M_8^-0.35 kpc^-1 Gyr^-1$, where M_8 = M/10^8 M_sun, is the minimum mass halo that creates a visible gap. The relation can be recast entirely in terms of observables, as R_gap= 0.059 w^-0.85 kpc^-1 Gyr^-1, for w in kpc, normalized at 100 kpc. Using published data, the density of gaps is estima…
We study cell count moments up to fifth order of the distributions of haloes, of halo substructures as a proxy for galaxies, and of mass in the context of the halo model and compare theoretical predictions to the results of numerical simulations. On scales larger than the size of the largest cluster, we present a simple point cluster model in which results depend only on cluster-cluster correlations and on the distribution of the number of objects within a cluster, or cluster occupancy. The point cluster model leads to expressions for moments of galaxy counts in which the volume-averaged momen…
A common approach in semi-analytic modeling of galaxy formation is to construct Monte Carlo realizations of merger histories of dark matter halos whose masses are sampled from a halo mass function. Both the mass function itself, and the merger rates used to construct merging histories are calibrated to N-body simulations. Typically, "backsplash" halos (those which were once subhalos within a larger halo, but which have since moved outside of the halo) are counted in both the halo mass function, and in the merger rates (or, equivalently, progenitor mass functions). This leads to a double-counti…
We describe and test a new method for creating initial conditions for cosmological N-body dark matter simulations based on second-order Lagrangian perturbation theory (2lpt). The method can be applied to multi-mass particle distributions making it suitable for creating resimulation, or `zoom' initial conditions. By testing against an analytic solution we show that the method works well for a spherically symmetric perturbation with radial features ranging over more than three orders of magnitude in linear scale and eleven orders of magnitude in particle mass. We apply the method and repeat resi…
The stellar haloes of galaxies can currently be studied either through observations of resolved halo stars or through surface photometry. Curiously, the two methods appear to give conflicting results, as a number of surface photometry measurements have revealed integrated colours that are too red to be reconciled with the halo properties inferred from the study of resolved stars. Several explanations for this anomaly have been proposed - including dust photoluminescence, extinction of extragalactic background light and a bottom-heavy stellar initial mass function. A decisive test is, however, …
We use a semianalytic approach that is calibrated to N-body simulations to study the evolution of self-interacting dark matter cores in galaxies. We demarcate the regime where the temporal evolution of the core density follows a well-defined track set by the initial halo parameters and the cross section. Along this track, the central density reaches a minimum value set by the initial halo density. Further evolution leads to an outward heat transfer, inducing gravothermal core collapse such that the core shrinks as its density increases. We show that the time scale for the core collapse is high…
A coherent over- or under-density contrast across a finite survey volume causes an upward- or downward-fluctuation in the observed number of halos. This fluctuation in halo number adds a significant co-variant scatter in the observed amplitudes of weak lensing power spectrum at nonlinear, small scales -- the so-called super-sample variance or the halo sample variance. In this paper, we show that by measuring both the number counts of clusters and the power spectrum in the same survey region, we can mitigate this loss of information and significantly enhance the scientific return from the upcom…
We demonstrate that self-interacting dark matter models with interactions mediated by light particles can have significant deviations in the matter power-spectrum and detailed structure of galactic halos when compared to a standard cold dark matter scenario. While these deviations can take the form of suppression of small scale structure that are in some ways similar to that of warm dark matter, the self-interacting models have a much wider range of possible phenomenology. A long-range force in the dark matter can introduce multiple scales to the initial power spectrum, in the form of dark aco…
We examine the kinematics of the Galactic halo based on SDSS/SEGUE data by Carollo et al. (2007, 2010). We find that their claims of a counter-rotating halo are the result of substantial biases in distance estimates (of order 50%): the claimed retrograde component, which makes up only a tiny fraction of the entire sample, prone to contaminations, is identified as the tail of distance overestimates. The strong overestimates also result in a lift in the vertical velocity component, which explains the large altitudes those objects were claimed to reach. Errors are worst for the lowest metallicity…
We discuss a novel approach to "weighing" the Milky Way dark matter halo, one that combines the latest samples of halo stars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with state-of-the-art numerical simulations of Milky Way analogs. The fully cosmological runs employed in the present study include "Eris", one of the highest-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of the formation of a M_vir=8e11 M_sun late-type spiral, and the dark-matter only M_vir=1.7e12 M_sun "Via Lactea II" simulation. Eris provides an excellent laboratory for creating mock SDSS samples of tracer halo stars, and we s…
We study the effects on the number counts of sub-millimetre galaxies due to gravitational lensing. We explore the effects on the magnification cross section due to halo density profiles, ellipticity and cosmological parameter (the power-spectrum normalisation $σ_8$). We show that the ellipticity does not strongly affect the magnification cross section in gravitational lensing while the halo radial profiles do. Since the baryonic cooling effect is stronger in galaxies than clusters, galactic haloes are more concentrated. In light of this, a new scenario of two halo population model is explored …
The evolution of galaxy cluster counts is a powerful probe of several fundamental cosmological parameters. A number of recent studies using this probe have claimed tension with the cosmology preferred by the analysis of the Planck primary CMB data, in the sense that there are fewer clusters observed than predicted based on the primary CMB cosmology. One possible resolution to this problem is systematic errors in the absolute halo mass calibration in cluster studies, which is required to convert the standard theoretical prediction (the halo mass function) into counts as a function of the observ…
We present observational constraints on the galaxy-halo connection, focusing particularly on galaxy assembly bias, from a novel combination of counts-in-cylinders statistics, $P(N_{\rm{CIC}})$, with the standard measurements of the projected two-point correlation function, $w_{\rm{p}}(r_{\rm{p}})$, and number density, $n_{\rm{gal}}$, of galaxies. We measure $n_{\rm{gal}}$, $w_{\rm{p}}(r_{\rm{p}})$ and $P(N_{\rm{CIC}})$ for volume-limited, luminosity-threshold samples of galaxies selected from SDSS DR7, and use them to constrain halo occupation distribution (HOD) models, including a model in wh…
We present the halo number counts and its two-point statistics, the observable angular power spectrum, extracted for the first time from relativistic N-body simulations. The halo catalogues used in this work are built from the relativistic N-body code gevolution, and the observed redshift and angular positions of the sources are computed using a non-perturbative ray-tracing method, which includes all relativistic scalar contributions to the number counts. We investigate the validity and limitations of the linear bias prescription to describe our simulated power spectra. In particular, we asses…
We compare the efficiency of weak lensing-selected galaxy clusters counts and of the weak lensing bispectrum at capturing non-Gaussian features in the dark matter distribution. We use the halo model to compute the weak lensing power spectrum, the bispectrum and the expected number of detected clusters, and derive constraints on cosmological parameters for a large, low systematic weak lensing survey, by focusing on the $Ω_m$-$σ_8$ plane and on the dark energy equation of state. We separate the power spectrum into the resolved and the unresolved parts of the data, the resolved part being defined…
The halo mass function (HMF) is a critical element in cosmological analyses of galaxy cluster catalogs. We quantify the impact of uncertainties in HMF parameters on cosmological constraints from cluster catalogs similar to those from Planck, those expected from the Euclid, Roman and Rubin surveys, and from a hypothetical larger future survey. We analyse simulated catalogs in each case, gradually loosening priors on HMF parameters to evaluate the degradation in cosmological constraints. While current uncertainties on HMF parameters do not substantially impact Planck-like surveys, we find that t…
Naive estimates of the statistics of large scale structure and weak lensing power spectrum measurements that include only Gaussian errors exaggerate their scientific impact. Non-linear evolution and finite volume effects are both significant sources of non-Gaussian covariance that reduce the ability of power spectrum measurements to constrain cosmological parameters. Using a halo model formalism, we derive an intuitive understanding of the various contributions to the covariance and show that our analytical treatment agrees with simulations. This approach enables an approximate derivation of a…
In this work we aim at investigating the effects of baryons on the dark matter (DM) haloes structure, focusing on the correlation between the presence and importance of stellar discs and the halo shapes. We study the properties of a subsample of DM haloes from Fenix and EAGLE cosmological simulations. We inspect the central regions of haloes in the mass range [10.9 - 992.3] x 10^{10} Msun at z=0, comparing the hydrodynamic runs and their dark matter only (DMo) counterparts. Our results indicate that baryons have a significant impact on the shape of the inner halo, mainly within ~ 20 percent of…
We present a first estimate based on a cosmological gasdynamics simulation of galaxy cluster radio halo counts to be expected in forthcoming low-frequency radio surveys. Our estimate is based on a FLASH simulation of the LCDM model for which we have assigned radio power to clusters via a model that relates radio emissivity to cluster magnetic field strength, intracluster turbulence, and density. We vary several free parameters of this model and find that radio halo number counts vary by up to a factor of two for average magnetic fields ranging from 0.2 to 3.1 uG. However, we predict significan…
We examine the counts-in-cells probability distribution functions that describe dark matter halos in the Dark Energy Universe Simulations (DEUS). We describe the measurements between redshifts $z=0$ to $z=4$ on both linear and non-linear scales. The best-fits of the gravitational quasi-equilibrium distribution (GQED), the negative binomial distribution (NBD), the Poisson-Lognormal distribution (PLN), and the Poisson-Lognormal distribution with a bias parameter (PLNB) are compared to simulations. The fits agree reasonably consistently over a range of redshifts and scales. To distinguish quintes…
The Excursion Set approach has been used to make predictions for a number of interesting quantities in studies of nonlinear hierarchical clustering. These include the halo mass function, halo merger rates, halo formation times and masses, halo clustering, analogous quantities for voids, and the distribution of dark matter counts in randomly placed cells. The approach assumes that all these quantities can be mapped to problems involving the first crossing distribution of a suitably chosen barrier by random walks. Most analytic expressions for these distributions ignore the fact that, although d…
We present a detailed description and validation of our massively-parallel update to the mass-Peak Patch method, a fully predictive initial-space algorithm to quickly generate dark matter halo catalogues in very large cosmological volumes. We perform an extensive systematic comparison to a suite of N-body simulations covering a broad range of redshifts and simulation resolutions, and find that, without any parameter fitting, our method is able to generally reproduce N-body results while typically using over 3 orders of magnitude less CPU time, and a fraction of the memory cost. Instead of calc…
We study lensing magnification of source galaxies by intervening galaxy groups and clusters using a halo model. Halos are modeled with truncated NFW profiles with ellipticity added to their lensing potential and propagated to observable lensing statistics. We present the formalism to calculate observable effects due to a distribution of halos of different masses at different redshifts along the l ine of sight. We calculate the effects of magnification on the number counts of high-redshift galaxies. Using BLAST survey data for submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), we find that magnification affects th…
We study the mean number counts and two-point correlation functions, along with their covariance matrices, of cosmological surveys such as for clusters. In particular, we consider correlation functions averaged over finite redshift intervals, which are well suited to cluster surveys or populations of rare objects, where one needs to integrate over nonzero redshift bins to accumulate enough statistics. We develop an analytical formalism to obtain explicit expressions of all contributions to these means and covariance matrices, taking into account both shot-noise and sample-variance effects. We …
We have investigated a recently proposed halo-based model, Camelus, for predicting weak-lensing peak counts, and compared its results over a collection of 162 cosmologies with those from N-body simulations. While counts from both models agree for peaks with $\mathcal{S/N}>1$ (where $\mathcal{S/N}$ is the ratio of the peak height to the r.m.s. shape noise), we find $\approx 50\%$ fewer counts for peaks near $\mathcal{S/N}=0$ and significantly higher counts in the negative $\mathcal{S/N}$ tail. Adding shape noise reduces the differences to within $20\%$ for all cosmologies. We also found larger …
It has recently been proposed that the large-scale bias of dark matter halos depends sensitively on primordial non-Gaussianity of the local form. In this paper we point out that the strong scale dependence of the non-Gaussian halo bias imprints a distinct signature on the covariance of cluster counts. We find that using the full covariance of cluster counts results in improvements on constraints on the non-Gaussian parameter f_NL of three (one) orders of magnitude relative to cluster counts (counts + clustering variance) constraints alone. We forecast f_NL constraints for the upcoming Dark Ene…
The cosmic microwave background (CMB) contains an anomalous cold spot with a surrounding hot ring, known as the Cold Spot. Inoue & Silk (2006) proposed that this feature could be explained by postulating a supervoid: if such a large underdense region exists, then the growth of matter perturbing around the spot might differ from the average value in the Universe and the differences might affect weak lensing analysis of peak statistics. To investigate environmental effects on halo number count and peak statistics, we used a publicly available ray-tracing simulation for a box size of 2250$h^{-1}$…
Approximately half of the matter in the Universe is "unbound" at z = 0, according to N-body simulations such as the Millennium Run. Here, we use the milli-Millennium simulation to examine the distribution of unbound matter in relation to the dark matter halos which host galaxies. We measure the unbound matter within two types of windows, using a halo dependent radius and a fixed radius at several different scales. We also consider the timescales over which a halo can accrete the local unbound matter at z = 2 and z = 0. Finally, we compare the unbound matter to observable properties of galaxies…
We use cosmological simulations to study the effects of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) on the density profiles and substructure counts of dark matter halos from the scales of spiral galaxies to galaxy clusters, focusing explicitly on models with cross sections over dark matter particle mass σ/m = 1 and 0.1 cm^2/g. Our simulations rely on a new SIDM N-body algorithm that is derived self-consistently from the Boltzmann equation and that reproduces analytic expectations in controlled numerical experiments. We find that well-resolved SIDM halos have constant-density cores, with significantly …
A clear prediction of the Cold Dark Matter model is the existence of cuspy dark matter halo density profiles on all mass scales. This is not in agreement with the observed rotation curves of spiral galaxies, challenging on small scales the otherwise successful CDM paradigm. In this work we employ high resolution cosmological hydro-dynamical simulations to study the effects of dissipative processes on the inner distribution of dark matter in Milky-Way like objects (M~1e12 Msun). Our simulations include supernova feedback, and the effects of the radiation pressure of massive stars before they ex…
Most models for the connection between galaxies and their haloes ignore the possibility that galaxy properties may be correlated with halo properties other than mass, a phenomenon known as galaxy assembly bias. Yet, it is known that such correlations can lead to systematic errors in the interpretation of survey data. At present, the degree to which galaxy assembly bias may be present in the real Universe, and the best strategies for constraining it remain uncertain. We study the ability of several observables to constrain galaxy assembly bias from redshift survey data using the decorated halo …
We use Local Group galaxy counts together with the ELVIS N-body simulations to explore the relationship between the scatter and slope in the stellar mass vs. halo mass relation at low masses, $M_\star \simeq 10^5 - 10^8 M_\odot$. Assuming models with log-normal scatter about a median relation of the form $M_\star \propto M_\mathrm{halo}^α$, the preferred log-slope steepens from $α\simeq 1.8$ in the limit of zero scatter to $α\simeq 2.6$ in the case of $2$ dex of scatter in $M_\star$ at fixed halo mass. We provide fitting functions for the best-fit relations as a function of scatter, including …
We present a non-parametric Lagrangian biasing model and fit the ratio of the halo and mass densities at the field level using the mass-weighted halo field in the AbacusSummit simulations at $z=0.5$. Unlike the perturbative halo bias model widely used in interpreting the observed large-scale structure traced by galaxies, we find a non-negative halo-to-mass ratio that increases monotonically with the linear overdensity $δ_1$ in the initial Lagrangian space. The bias expansion, however, does not guarantee non-negativity of the halo counts, and may give rising halo number counts at negative overd…
We examine the impact of baryonic physics on the halo distribution in hydrodynamic simulations (Illustris, IllustrisTNG, and EAGLE), particularly with regards to how it differs from that in dark matter only (DMO) simulations. We find that, in general, DMO simulations produce halo mass functions (HMF) that are shifted to higher halo masses than their hydrodynamic counterparts, due to the lack of baryonic physics. However, the exact nature of this mass shift is a complex function of mass, halo definition, redshift, and larger-scale environment, and it also depends on the specifics of the baryoni…
Baryons both increase halo concentration through adiabatic contraction and expel mass through feedback processes. However, it is not well understood how the radiation fields prevalent during the epoch of reionization affect the evolution of concentration in dark matter halos. We investigate how baryonic physics during the epoch of reionization modify the structure of dark matter halos in the Cosmic Reionization On Computers (CROC) simulations. We use two different measures of halo concentration to quantify the effects. We compare concentrations of halos matched between full physics simulations…
We present a novel halo painting network that learns to map approximate 3D dark matter fields to realistic halo distributions. This map is provided via a physically motivated network with which we can learn the non-trivial local relation between dark matter density field and halo distributions without relying on a physical model. Unlike other generative or regressive models, a well motivated prior and simple physical principles allow us to train the mapping network quickly and with relatively little data. In learning to paint halo distributions from computationally cheap, analytical and non-li…
We perform N-body simulations for $f(T)$ gravity using the ME-Gadget code, in order to investigate for the first time the structure formation process in detail. Focusing on the power-law model, and considering the model-parameter to be consistent within 1$σ$ with all other cosmological datasets (such as SNIa, BAO, CMB, CC), we show that there are clear observational differences between $Λ$CDM cosmology and $f(T)$ gravity, due to the modifications brought about the latter in the Hubble function evolution and the effective $Newton\prime s$ constant. We extract the matter density distribution, ma…
Excursion set theory (EST) is an analytical framework to study the large-scale structure of the Universe. EST introduces a procedure to calculate the number density of structures by relating the cosmological linear perturbation theory to the nonlinear structures in late time. In this work, we introduce a novel approach to reformulate the EST in matrix formalism. We propose that the matrix representation of EST will facilitate the calculations in this framework. The method is to discretize the two-dimensional plane of variance and density contrast of EST, where the trajectories for each point i…
A mass of dark matter halo is commonly defined as the spherical over-density (SO) mass with respect to a reference density, whereas the time evolution of an SO mass can be affected by the redshift evolution of the reference density as well as the physical mass accretion around halos. In this study, we directly measure the amount of pseudo evolution of the SO masses of cluster-sized halos by the changes in the reference density from a time series of $N$-body simulations for the first time. We find that the $52\pm19\%$ difference in the virial SO masses between $z=0$ and $1$ can be accounted for…
We present an analytical calculation of the extreme value statistics for dark matter halos - that is, the probability distribution of the most massive halo within some region of the universe of specified shape and size. Our calculation makes use of the counts-in-cells formalism for the correlation functions, and the halo bias derived from the Sheth-Tormen mass function. We demonstrate the power of the method on spherical regions, comparing the results to measurements in a large cosmological dark matter simulation and achieving good agreement. Particularly good fits are obtained for the most li…
Cosmological cluster-scale strong gravitational lensing probes the mass distribution of the dense cores of massive dark matter halos and the structures along the line of sight from background sources to the observer. It is frequently assumed that the primary lens mass dominates the lensing, with the contribution of secondary masses along the line of sight being neglected. Secondary mass structures may, however, affect both the detectability of strong lensing in a given survey and modify the properties of the lensing that is detected. In this paper, we utilize a large cosmological N-body simula…
The interacting dark energy (IDE) model, which considers the interaction between dark energy and dark matter, provides a natural mechanism to alleviate the coincidence problem and can also relieve the observational tensions under the $Λ$CDM model. Previous studies have put constraints on IDE models by observations of cosmic expansion history, cosmic microwave background and large-scale structures. However, these data are not yet enough to distinguish IDE models from $Λ$CDM effectively. Because the non-linear structure formation contains rich cosmological information, it can provide additional …
Present and future large scale surveys offer promising probes of cosmology. For example the Dark Energy Survey (DES) is forecast to detect ~300 millions galaxies and thousands clusters up to redshift ~1.3. I here show ongoing work to combine two probes of large scale structure : cluster number counts and galaxy 2-point function (in real or harmonic space). The halo model (coupled to a Halo Occupation Distribution) can be used to model the cross-covariance between these probes, and I introduce a diagrammatic method to compute easily the different terms involved. Furthermore, I compute the joint…
One of the non-canonical descriptions of scalar field dark energy is the tachyon. The present work is devoted to study the dynamics of dark matter overdensity in a conformally coupled tachyon field dark energy model. The model is tuned to mimic the $Λ$CDM cosmology at background level. The semi-analytic spherical collapse model of dark matter overdensity is adopted to study the nonlinear evolution. The effects of non-minimal coupling in the energy budget on the clustering of dark matter is investigated. It is observed that the growth rate of matter overdensity is higher in presence of the non-…
The standard cosmological paradigm currently lacks a detailed account of physics in the dark sector, the dark matter and energy that dominate cosmic evolution. In this paper, we consider the distinguishing factors between three alternative models - warm dark matter, quintessence and coupled dark matter-energy - and \lcdm{} through numerical simulations of cosmological structure formation. Key halo statistics - halo spin/velocity alignment between large-scale structure and neighboring haloes, halo formation time and migration - were compared across cosmologies within the redshift range 0$\leq$$…
We study the effect of baryons on the inner dark matter profile of the first galaxies using the First Billion Years simulation between z=16-6 before secular evolution sets in. Using a large statistical sample from two simulations of the same volume and cosmological initial conditions, one with and one without baryons, we are able to directly compare haloes with their baryon-free counterparts, allowing a detailed study of the modifications to the dark matter density profile due to the presence of baryons during the first billion years of galaxy formation. For each of the ~ 5000 haloes in our sa…
