A wide range of techniques can be considered for segmentation of images of nanostructured surfaces. Manually segmenting these images is time-consuming and results in a user-dependent segmentation bias, while there is currently no consensus on the best automated segmentation methods for particular techniques, image classes, and samples. Any image segmentation approach must minimise the noise in the images to ensure accurate and meaningful statistical analysis can be carried out. Here we develop protocols for the segmentation of images of 2D assemblies of gold nanoparticles formed on silicon sur…

Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks (CRNNs) excel at scene text recognition. Inspired by recently proposed memory-augmented neural networks (MANNs) for long-term sequential modeling, we present a new architecture dubbed Convolutional Multi-way Associative Memory (CMAM) to tackle the limitation of current CRNNs. Furthermore, it has recently been demonstrated that attention can also play an important role in the context of applying artificial neural networks to a variety of tasks from fields such as computer vision and NLP. In this work we show that, by properly defining attention for convolutional neural networks, we can actually use this type of information in order to significantly improve the performance of a student CNN network by forcing it to mimic the attention maps of a powerful teacher network. To that end, we propose several novel m…

Amidst the ongoing pandemic, several studies have shown that COVID-19 classification and grading using computed tomography (CT) images can be automated with convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Many of these studies focused on reporting initial results of algorithms that were assembled from commonly used components. The choice of these components was often pragmatic rather than systematic. For instance, several studies used 2D CNNs even though these might not be optimal for handling 3D CT volumes. This paper identifies a variety of components that increase the performance of CNN-based algorit…
Hand pose estimation from monocular depth images is an important and challenging problem for human-computer interaction. Recently deep convolutional networks (ConvNet) with sophisticated design have been employed to address it, but the improvement over traditional methods is not so apparent. To promote the performance of directly 3D coordinate regression, we propose a tree-structured Region Ensemble Network (REN), which partitions the convolution outputs into regions and integrates the results from multiple regressors on each regions. Compared with multi-model ensemble, our model is completely…
Semantic segmentation of breast cancer metastases in histopathological slides is a challenging task. In fact, significant variation in data characteristics of histopathology images (domain shift) make generalization of deep learning to unseen data difficult. Our goal is to address this challenge by using a conditional Fully Convolutional Network (co-FCN) whose output can be conditioned at run time, and which can improve its performance when a properly selected set of reference slides are used to condition the output. We adapted to our task a co-FCN originally applied to organs segmentation in …

Object detection systems based on the deep convolutional neural network (CNN) have recently made ground- breaking advances on several object detection benchmarks. While the features learned by these high-capacity neural networks are discriminative for categorization, inaccurate localization is still a major source of error for detection. Building upon high-capacity CNN architectures, we address the localization problem by 1) using a search algorithm based on Bayesian optimization that sequentially proposes candidate regions for an object bounding box, and 2) training the CNN with a structured …

Normalization techniques have become a basic component in modern convolutional neural networks (ConvNets). In particular, many recent works demonstrate that promoting the orthogonality of the weights helps train deep models and improve robustness. For ConvNets, most existing methods are based on penalizing or normalizing weight matrices derived from concatenating or flattening the convolutional kernels. These methods often destroy or ignore the benign convolutional structure of the kernels; therefore, they are often expensive or impractical for deep ConvNets. In contrast, we introduce a simple…

Recent years have witnessed the great success of convolutional neural network (CNN) based models in the field of computer vision. CNN is able to learn hierarchically abstracted features from images in an end-to-end training manner. However, most of the existing CNN models only learn features through a feedforward structure and no feedback information from top to bottom layers is exploited to enable the networks to refine themselves. In this paper, we propose a "Learning with Rethinking" algorithm. By adding a feedback layer and producing the emphasis vector, the model is able to recurrently bo…
Rectified linear unit (ReLU) is a widely used activation function for deep convolutional neural networks. However, because of the zero-hard rectification, ReLU networks miss the benefits from negative values. In this paper, we propose a novel activation function called \emph{flexible rectified linear unit (FReLU)} to further explore the effects of negative values. By redesigning the rectified point of ReLU as a learnable parameter, FReLU expands the states of the activation output. When the network is successfully trained, FReLU tends to converge to a negative value, which improves the express…
Current research in convolutional neural networks (CNN) focuses mainly on changing the architecture of the networks, optimizing the hyper-parameters and improving the gradient descent. However, most work use only 3 standard families of operations inside the CNN, the convolution, the activation function, and the pooling. In this work, we propose a new family of operations based on the Green's function of the Laplacian, which allows the network to solve the Laplacian, to integrate any vector field and to regularize the field by forcing it to be conservative. Hence, the Green's function (GF) is t…

We explored and studied the factors such as border thickness, number of edges for a node, and the number of features to be fed into the GCN by performing experiments. We demonstrate the eff…
This paper proposes a combination of a convolutional and a LSTM network to improve the accuracy of OCR on early printed books. While the standard model of line based OCR uses a single LSTM layer, we utilize a CNN- and Pooling-Layer combination in advance of an LSTM layer. Due to the higher amount of trainable parameters the performance of the network relies on a high amount of training examples to unleash its power. Hereby, the error is reduced by a factor of up to 44%, yielding a CER of 1% and below. To further improve the results we use a voting mechanism to achieve character error rates (CE…

Depthwise convolution and grouped convolution has been successfully applied to improve the efficiency of convolutional neural network (CNN). We suggest that these models can be considered as special cases of a generalized convolution operation, named channel local convolution(CLC), where an output channel is computed using a subset of the input channels. This definition entails computation dependency relations between input and output channels, which can be represented by a channel dependency graph(CDG). By modifying the CDG of grouped convolution, a new CLC kernel named interlaced grouped con…

In addition, we explicitly included color information from multiple color spaces to facilitate network training and thus to further im…
Recent works reveal that re-calibrating the intermediate activation of adversarial examples can improve the adversarial robustness of a CNN model. The state of the arts [Baiet al., 2021] and [Yanet al., 2021] explores this feature at the channel level, i.e. the activation of a channel is uniformly scaled by a factor. In this paper, we investigate the intermediate activation manipulation at a more fine-grained level. Instead of uniformly scaling the activation, we individually adjust each element within an activation and thus propose Element-Wise Activation Scaling, dubbed EWAS, to improve CNNs…

Convolutional architectures have proven extremely successful for vision tasks. Their hard inductive biases enable sample-efficient learning, but come at the cost of a potentially lower performance ceiling. However, they require costly pre-training on large external datasets or distillation from pre-trained convolutional networks. In this paper, we ask the following question: is it possible to combine the strengths of these two architectures while avoiding their …

Traditional Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) typically use the same activation function (usually ReLU) for all neurons with non-linear mapping operations. For example, the deep convolutional architecture Inception-v4 uses ReLU. To improve the classification performance of traditional CNNs, a new "Multi-function Convolutional Neural Network" (MCNN) is created by using different activation functions for different neurons. For $n$ neurons and $m$ different activation functions, there are a total of $m^n-m$ MCNNs and only $m$ traditional CNNs. Therefore, the best model is very likely to be cho…

Following Batch Whitening studies have employed the same structure without further analysis; even Batch Whitening was analyzed on the premise that the input of a linear layer is whitened. Object classification in synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) imagery is usually a data starved and class imbalanced problem. There are few objects of interest present among much benign seafloor. Despite these problems, current classification techniques discard a large portion of the collected SAS information. Anatomical segmentation is a fundamental task in medical image computing, generally tackled with fully convolutional neural networks which produce dense segmentation masks. These models are often trained with loss functions such as cross-entropy or Dice, which assume pixels to be independent of each other, thus ignoring topological errors and anatomical inconsistencies. We address this limitation by moving from pixel-level to graph representations, which allow to naturally incorporate anatomical constraints by construction. While the accuracy of convolutional neural networks has achieved vast improvements by introducing larger and deeper network architectures, also the memory footprint for storing their parameters and activations has increased. This trend especially challenges power- and resource-limited accelerator designs, which are often restricted to store all network data in on-chip memory to avoid interfacing energy-hungry external memories. Maximizing the network size that fits on a given accelerator thus requires to maximize its memory utilization. While the traditionally used ping-pong buffering techniqu…
Deep artificial neural networks have made remarkable progress in different tasks in the field of computer vision. Compact neural networks are inclined to exploit "sparsely-connected" convolutions such as depthwise convolution and group convolution for employment in mobile applications. Compared with standard "fully-connected" convolutions, these convolutions are more computationally economical. However, "sparsely-connected" convolutions block the inter-group information exchange, which induces severe performance degradation. To address this issue, we present two novel operations named merging and evolution to leverage the inter-group information. Our key idea is encoding the inter-group information with a…
