We study the \textsc{Max Partial $H$-Coloring} problem: given a graph $G$, find the largest induced subgraph of $G$ that admits a homomorphism into $H$, where $H$ is a fixed pattern graph without loops. Note that when $H$ is a complete graph on $k$ vertices, the problem reduces to finding the largest induced $k$-colorable subgraph, which for $k=2$ is equivalent (by complementation) to \textsc{Odd Cycle Transversal}.
We prove that for every fixed pattern graph $H$ without loops, \textsc{Max Partial $H$-Coloring} can be solved:
$\bullet$ in $\{P_5,F\}$-free graphs in polynomial time, whenever $F$ is a threshold graph;
$\bullet$ in $\{P_5,\textrm{bull}\}$-free graphs in polynomial time;
$\bullet$ in $P_5$-free graphs in time $n^{\mathcal{O}(ω(G))}$;
$\bullet$ in $\{P_6,\textrm{1-subdivided claw}\}$-free graphs in time $n^{\mathcal{O}(ω(G)^3)}$.
Here, $n$ is the number of vertices of the input graph $G$ and $ω(G)$ is the maximum size of a clique in~$G$. Furthermore, combining the mentioned algorithms for $P_5$-free and for $\{P_6,\textrm{1-subdivided claw}\}$-free graphs with a simple branching procedure, we obtain subexponential-time algorithms for \textsc{Max Partial $H$-Coloring} in these classes of graphs. Finally, we show that even a restricted variant of \textsc{Max Partial $H$-Coloring} is $\mathsf{NP}$-hard in the considered subclasses of $P_5$-free graphs, if we allow loops on $H$.
The problem of computing all maximal induced subgraphs of a graph G that have a graph property P, also called the maximal P-subgraphs problem, is considered. This problem is studied for hereditary, connected-hereditary and rooted-hereditary graph properties. The maximal P-subgraphs problem is reduced to restricted versions of this problem by providing algorithms that solve the general problem, assuming that an algorithm for a restricted version is given. The complexity of the algorithms are analyzed in terms of total polynomial time, incremental polynomial time and the complexity class P-enume…
Given an undirected graph $G$ and integers $c$ and $k$, the Maximum Edge-Colorable Subgraph problem asks whether we can delete at most $k$ edges in $G$ to obtain a graph that has a proper edge coloring with at most $c$ colors. We show that Maximum Edge-Colorable Subgraph admits, for every fixed $c$, a linear-size problem kernel when parameterized by the edge deletion distance of $G$ to a graph with maximum degree $c-1$. This parameterization measures the distance to instances that, due to Vizing's famous theorem, are trivial yes-instances. For $c\le 4$, we also provide a linear-size kernel for…
Inductive $k$-independent graphs generalize chordal graphs and have recently been advocated in the context of interference-avoiding wireless communication scheduling. The NP-hard problem of finding maximum-weight induced $c$-colorable subgraphs, which is a generalization of finding maximum independent sets, naturally occurs when selecting $c$ sets of pairwise non-conflicting jobs (modeled as graph vertices). We investigate the parameterized complexity of this problem on inductive $k$-independent graphs. We show that the Independent Set problem is W[1]-hard even on 2-simplicial 3-minoes---a sub…
We investigate the parameterized complexity of finding subgraphs with hereditary properties on graphs belonging to a hereditary graph class. Given a graph $G$, a non-trivial hereditary property $Π$ and an integer parameter $k$, the general problem $P(G,Π,k)$ asks whether there exists $k$ vertices of $G$ that induce a subgraph satisfying property $Π$. This problem, $P(G,Π,k)$ has been proved to be NP-complete by Lewis and Yannakakis. The parameterized complexity of this problem is shown to be W[1]-complete by Khot and Raman, if $Π$ includes all trivial graphs but not all complete graphs and vic…
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a multigraph of maximum degree $Δ$. The edges of $G$ can be colored with at most $\frac{3}{2}Δ$ colors by Shannon's theorem. We study lower bounds on the size of subgraphs of $G$ that can be colored with $Δ$ colors. Shannon's Theorem gives a bound of $\fracΔ{\lfloor\frac{3}{2}Δ\rfloor}|E|$. However, for $Δ=3$, Kamiński and Kowalik [SWAT'10] showed that there is a 3-edge-colorable subgraph of size at least $\frac{7}{9}|E|$, unless $G$ has a connected component isomorphic to $K_3+e$ (a $K_3$ with an arbitrary edge doubled). Here we extend this line of research by showing that $G…
It follows from the work of Tait and the Four-Color-Theorem that a planar cubic graph is 3-edge-colorable if and only if it contains no bridge. We consider the question of which planar graphs are subgraphs of planar cubic bridgeless graphs, and hence 3-edge-colorable. We provide an efficient recognition algorithm that given an $n$-vertex planar graph, augments this graph in $O(n^2)$ steps to a planar cubic bridgeless supergraph, or decides that no such augmentation is possible. The main tools involve the Generalized Antifactor-problem for the fixed embedding case, and SPQR-trees for the variab…
Clique-width is a well-studied graph parameter owing to its use in understanding algorithmic tractability: if the clique-width of a graph class ${\cal G}$ is bounded by a constant, a wide range of problems that are NP-complete in general can be shown to be polynomial-time solvable on ${\cal G}$. For this reason, the boundedness or unboundedness of clique-width has been investigated and determined for many graph classes. We survey these results for hereditary graph classes, which are the graph classes closed under taking induced subgraphs. We then discuss the algorithmic consequences of these r…
We present a quasi linear-time algorithm for Maximum Matching on distance-hereditary graphs and some of their generalizations. This improves on [Dragan, WG'97], who proposed such an algorithm for the subclass of (tent,hexahedron)-free distance-hereditary graphs. Furthermore, our result is derived from a more general one that is obtained for b-Matching. In the (unit cost) b-Matching problem, we are given a graph G = (V, E) together with a nonnegative integer capacity b v for every vertex v $\in$ V. The objective is to assign nonnegative integer weights (x e) e$\in$E so that: for every v $\in$ V…

A set of vertices in a graph is c-colorable if the subgraph induced by the set has a proper c-coloring. In this paper, we study the problem of finding a step-by-step transformation (reconfiguration) between two c-colorable sets in the same graph. This problem generalizes the well-studied Independent Set Reconfiguration problem. As the first step toward a systematic understanding of the complexity of this general problem, we study the problem on classes of perfect graphs. We first focus on interval graphs and give a combinatorial characterization of the distance between two c-colorable sets. Th…
\textsc{Densest $k$-Subgraph} is the problem to find a vertex subset $S$ of size $k$ such that the number of edges in the subgraph induced by $S$ is maximized. In this paper, we show that \textsc{Densest $k$-Subgraph} is fixed parameter tractable when parameterized by neighborhood diversity, block deletion number, distance-hereditary deletion number, and cograph deletion number, respectively. Furthermore, we give a $2$-approximation $2^{\tc(G)/2}n^{O(1)}$-time algorithm where $\tc(G)$ is the twin cover number of an input graph $G$.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph of maximum degree $Δ$. The edges of $G$ can be colored with at most $Δ+1$ colors by Vizing's theorem. We study lower bounds on the size of subgraphs of $G$ that can be colored with $Δ$ colors. Vizing's Theorem gives a bound of $\fracΔ{Δ+1}|E|$. This is known to be tight for cliques $K_{Δ+1}$ when $Δ$ is even. However, for $Δ=3$ it was improved to $26/31|E|$ by Albertson and Haas [Parsimonious edge colorings, Disc. Math. 148, 1996] and later to $6/7|E|$ by Rizzi [Approximating the maximum 3-edge-colorable subgraph problem, Disc. Math. 309, 2009]. It is tight for …
A biclique is a set of vertices that induce a bipartite complete graph. A graph G is biclique-Helly when its family of maximal bicliques satisfies the Helly property. If every induced subgraph of G is also biclique-Helly, then G is hereditary biclique-Helly. A graph is C_4-dominated when every cycle of length 4 contains a vertex that is dominated by the vertex of the cycle that is not adjacent to it. In this paper we show that the class of hereditary biclique-Helly graphs is formed precisely by those C_4-dominated graphs that contain no triangles and no induced cycles of length either 5, or 6.…
We study two fundamental problems related to finding subgraphs: (1) given graphs G and H, Subgraph Test asks if H is isomorphic to a subgraph of G, (2) given graphs G, H, and an integer t, Packing asks if G contains t vertex-disjoint subgraphs isomorphic to H. For every graph class F, let F-Subgraph Test and F-Packing be the special cases of the two problems where H is restricted to be in F. Our goal is to study which classes F make the two problems tractable in one of the following senses: * (randomized) polynomial-time solvable, * admits a polynomial (many-one) kernel, or * admits a polynomi…
A graph is $(H_1,H_2)$-free for a pair of graphs $H_1,H_2$ if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. In 2001, Král', Kratochv\'ıl, Tuza, and Woeginger initiated a study into the complexity of Colouring for $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs. Since then, others have tried to complete their study, but many cases remain open. We focus on those $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs where $H_2$ is $\overline{H_1}$, the complement of $H_1$. As these classes are closed under complementation, the computational complexities of Colouring and Clique Cover coincide. By combining new and known results, we ar…
A graph is distance-hereditary if for any pair of vertices, their distance in every connected induced subgraph containing both vertices is the same as their distance in the original graph. The Distance-Hereditary Vertex Deletion problem asks, given a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and an integer $k$, whether there is a set $S$ of at most $k$ vertices in $G$ such that $G-S$ is distance-hereditary. This problem is important due to its connection to the graph parameter rank-width that distance-hereditary graphs are exactly graphs of rank-width at most $1$. Eiben, Ganian, and Kwon (MFCS' 16) proved tha…
In this paper, we are interested in algorithms that take in input an arbitrary graph $G$, and that enumerate in output all the (inclusion-wise) maximal "subgraphs" of $G$ which fulfil a given property $Π$. All over this paper, we study several different properties $Π$, and the notion of subgraph under consideration (induced or not) will vary from a result to another. More precisely, we present efficient algorithms to list all maximal split subgraphs, sub-cographs and some subclasses of cographs of a given input graph. All the algorithms presented here run in polynomial delay, and moreover for …
Let $P_k$ be a path, $C_k$ a cycle on $k$ vertices, and $K_{k,k}$ a complete bipartite graph with $k$ vertices on each side of the bipartition. We prove that (1) for any integers $k, t>0$ and a graph $H$ there are finitely many subgraph minimal graphs with no induced $P_k$ and $K_{t,t}$ that are not $H$-colorable and (2) for any integer $k>4$ there are finitely many subgraph minimal graphs with no induced $P_k$ that are not $C_{k-2}$-colorable. The former generalizes the result of Hell and Huang [Complexity of coloring graphs without paths and cycles, Discrete Appl. Math. 216: 211--232 (2017)]…
A connected dominating set in a graph is a dominating set of vertices that induces a connected subgraph. Following analogous studies in the literature related to independent sets, dominating sets, and total dominating sets, we study in this paper the class of graphs in which the connected dominating sets can be separated from the other vertex subsets by a linear weight function. More precisely, we say that a graph is connected-domishold if it admits non-negative real weights associated to its vertices such that a set of vertices is a connected dominating set if and only if the sum of the corre…
Daligault, Rao and Thomassé asked whether every hereditary graph class that is well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph relation has bounded clique-width. Lozin, Razgon and Zamaraev (JCTB 2017+) gave a negative answer to this question, but their counterexample is a class that can only be characterised by infinitely many forbidden induced subgraphs. This raises the issue of whether the question has a positive answer for finitely defined hereditary graph classes. Apart from two stubborn cases, this has been confirmed when at most two induced subgraphs $H_1,H_2$ are forbidden. We confirm it for…
Lokshtanov, Marx, and Saurabh SODA 2011 proved that there is no $(k-ε)^{\operatorname{pw}(G)}\operatorname{poly}(n)$ time algorithm for deciding if an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with pathwidth $\operatorname{pw}(G)$ admits a proper vertex coloring with $k$ colors unless the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SETH) is false. We show here that nevertheless, when $k>\lfloor Δ/2 \rfloor + 1$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree in the graph $G$, there is a better algorithm, at least when there are few colorings. We present a Monte Carlo algorithm that given a graph $G$ along with a path decomposition of $G…
Daligault, Rao and Thomassé asked whether a hereditary class of graphs well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph relation has bounded clique-width. Lozin, Razgon and Zamaraev recently showed that this is not true for classes defined by infinitely many forbidden induced subgraphs. However, in the case of finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs the question remains open and we conjecture that in this case the answer is positive. The conjecture is known to hold for classes of graphs defined by a single forbidden induced subgraph $H$, as such graphs are well-quasi-ordered and are of bounded cli…
We consider the classical problems (Edge) Steiner Tree and Vertex Steiner Tree after restricting the input to some class of graphs characterized by a small set of forbidden induced subgraphs. We show a dichotomy for the former problem restricted to $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs and a dichotomy for the latter problem restricted to $H$-free graphs. We find that there exists an infinite family of graphs $H$ such that Vertex Steiner Tree is polynomial-time solvable for $H$-free graphs, whereas there exist only two graphs $H$ for which this holds for Edge Steiner Tree. We also find that Edge Steiner Tree…
In this paper we resolve the complexity of the isomorphism problem on all but finitely many of the graph classes characterized by two forbidden induced subgraphs. To this end we develop new techniques applicable for the structural and algorithmic analysis of graphs. First, we develop a methodology to show isomorphism completeness of the isomorphism problem on graph classes by providing a general framework unifying various reduction techniques. Second, we generalize the concept of the modular decomposition to colored graphs, allowing for non-standard decompositions. We show that, given a suitab…
For a graph $F$, a graph $G$ is \emph{$F$-free} if it does not contain an induced subgraph isomorphic to $F$. For two graphs $G$ and $H$, an \emph{$H$-coloring} of $G$ is a mapping $f:V(G)\rightarrow V(H)$ such that for every edge $uv\in E(G)$ it holds that $f(u)f(v)\in E(H)$. We are interested in the complexity of the problem $H$-{\sc Coloring}, which asks for the existence of an $H$-coloring of an input graph $G$. In particular, we consider $H$-{\sc Coloring} of $F$-free graphs, where $F$ is a fixed graph and $H$ is an odd cycle of length at least 5. This problem is closely related to the we…
The computational complexity of the Vertex Coloring problem is known for all hereditary classes of graphs defined by forbidding two connected five-vertex induced subgraphs, except for seven cases. We prove the polynomial-time solvability of four of these problems: for ($P_5$, dart)-free graphs, ($P_5$, banner)-free graphs, ($P_5$, bull)-free graphs, and (fork, bull)-free graphs.
In Partition Into Complementary Subgraphs (Comp-Sub) we are given a graph $G=(V,E)$, and an edge set property $Π$, and asked whether $G$ can be decomposed into two graphs, $H$ and its complement $\overline{H}$, for some graph $H$, in such a way that the edge cut $[V(H),V(\overline{H})]$ satisfies the property $Π$. Motivated by previous work, we consider Comp-Sub($Π$) when the property $Π=\mathcal{PM}$ specifies that the edge cut of the decomposition is a perfect matching. We prove that Comp-Sub($\mathcal{PM}$) is GI-hard when the graph $G$ is $\{C_{k\geq 7}, \overline{C}_{k\geq 7} \}$-free. On…
Given a graph $G$, the maximal induced subgraphs problem asks to enumerate all maximal induced subgraphs of $G$ that belong to a certain hereditary graph class. While its optimization version, known as the minimum vertex deletion problem in literature, has been intensively studied, enumeration algorithms are known for a few simple graph classes, e.g., independent sets, cliques, and forests, until very recently [Conte and Uno, STOC 2019]. There is also a connected variation of this problem, where one is concerned with only those induced subgraphs that are connected. We introduce two new approac…
For graphs $G$ and $H$, an $H$-coloring of $G$ is an edge-preserving mapping from $V(G)$ to $V(H)$. In the $H$-Coloring problem the graph $H$ is fixed and we ask whether an instance graph $G$ admits an $H$-coloring. A generalization of this problem is $H$-ColoringExt, where some vertices of $G$ are already mapped to vertices of $H$ and we ask if this partial mapping can be extended to an $H$-coloring. We study the complexity of variants of $H$-Coloring in $F$-free graphs, i.e., graphs excluding a fixed graph $F$ as an induced subgraph. For integers $a,b,c \geq 1$, by $S_{a,b,c}$ we denote the …
