A flow in which a thin film falls due to gravity on the inner surface of a vertical, rotating cylinder is investigated. This is performed using two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) direct numerical simulations, with a volume-of-fluid approach to treat the interface. The problem is parameterised by the Reynolds, Froude, Weber and Ekman numbers. The variation of the Ekman number ($Ek$), defined to be proportional of the rotational speed of the cylinder, has a strong effect on the flow characteristics. Simulations are conducted over a wide range of $Ek$ values ($0 \leq Ek \leq 484$) in order to provide detailed insight into how this parameter influences the flow. Our results indicate that increasing $Ek$, which leads to a rise in the magnitude of centrifugal forces, produces a stabilising effect, suppressing wave formation. Key flow features, such as the transition from a 2D to a more complex 3D wave regime, are influenced significantly by this stabilisation, and are investigated in detail. Furthermore, the imposed rotation results in distinct flow characteristics such as the development of angled waves, which arise due to the combination of gravitationally- and centrifugally-driven motion in the axial and azimuthal directions, respectively. We also use a weighted residuals integral boundary layer method to determine a boundary in the space of Reynolds and Ekman numbers that represents a threshold beyond which waves have recirculation regions.
In this Letter, we study the motion and wake-patterns of freely rising and falling cylinders in quiescent fluid. We show that the amplitude of oscillation and the overall system-dynamics are intricately linked to two parameters: the particle's mass-density relative to the fluid $m^* \equiv ρ_p/ρ_f$ and its relative moment-of-inertia $I^* \equiv {I}_p/{I}_f$. This supersedes the current understanding that a critical mass density ($m^*\approx$ 0.54) alone triggers the sudden onset of vigorous vibrations. Using over 144 combinations of ${m}^*$ and $I^*$, we comprehensively map out the parameter s…
Results are reported of an experimental investigation into the motion of a heavy cylinder free to move inside a water-filled drum rotating around a horizontal axis. The cylinder is observed to either co- or, counter intuitively, counter-rotate with respect to the rotating drum. The flow was measured with particle image velocimetry (PIV), and it was found that the inner cylinder significantly altered the bulk flow field from the solid-body rotation found for a fluid filled drum. In the counter-rotation case, the generated lift force allowed the cylinder to freely rotate without contact with the…
We discuss the analogy of the behaviour of films and drops of liquid on a rotating horizontal cylinder on the one hand and substrates with regular one-dimensional wettability patterns on the other hand. Based on the similarity between the respective governing long-wave equations we show that a drop of partially wetting liquid on a rotating cylinder undergoes a depinning transition when the rotation speed is increased. The transition occurs via a sniper bifurcation as in a recently described scenario for drops depinning on heterogeneous substrates.
We numerically investigate the flow control problem of the flow passing a stationary cylinder at a fixed Reynold number 500 using two attached control cylinders with different rotation rates. Compared to the traditional uniform (lattice) sampling method, we developed an active learning strategy based on Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), drastically reducing the number of simulations and accelerating the scientific findings. We also discussed the effects of parameters on different hydrodynamic coefficients, and verified the feasibility of this strategy. The mechanism of this asymmetric flow co…
Three-dimensional instability of axisymmetric flow in a rotating disk - cylinder configuration is studied numerically for the case of low cylinders with the height/radius aspect ratio varying between 1 and 0.1. A complete stability diagram for the transition from steady axisymmetric to oscillatory three-dimensional flow regime is reported. A good agreement with experimental results is obtained. It is shown that critical azimuthal wavenumber grows with the decrease of the aspect ratio, reaching the value of 19 at the aspect ratio 0.1. It is argued that the observed instability cannot be describ…
A numerical study of the problem of laminar infinite flow of viscous incompressible fluid around a rotating circular cylinder at Reynolds number $ 50 \le {\rm Re} \le 500 $ and dimensionless rotation rate $ 0 \le α\le 7 $ has been carried out. The parametric map of flow regimes has been constructed, where two zones of steady and two zones of periodic solutions are signed out. The dependencies of the drag and lift coefficients on the rotation rate for $ {\rm Re} = 200 $ are studied in detail. Convergence of the numerical solution to the known asymptotic solution at large $ α$ is confirmed.
Bounds of cavitation inception are experimentally determined in a creeping flow between eccentric cylinders, the inner one being static and the outer rotating at a constant angular velocity, Ω. The geometric configuration is additionally specified by a small minimum gap between cylinders, H, as compared with the radii of the inner and outer cylinders. For some values H and Ω, cavitation bubbles are observed, which are collected on the surface of the inner cylinder and equally distributed over the line parallel to its axis near the downstream minimum gap position. Cavitation occurs for the para…
In this paper, we formulated the non-steady flow due to the uniformly accelerated and rotating circular cylinder from rest in a stationary, viscous, incompressible and micropolar fluid. This flow problem is examined numerically by adopting a special scheme comprising the Adams-Bashforth Temporal Fourier Series method and the Runge-Kutta Temporal Special Finite-Difference method. This numerical scheme transforms the governing equation for micropolar fluids for this problem into system of finite-difference equations. This system was further solved numerically by point SOR-method. These results w…
The flow of fluid confined between a heated rotating cylinder and a cooled stationary cylinder is a canonical experiment for the study of heat transfer in engineering. The theoretical treatment of this system is greatly simplified if the cylinders are assumed to be of infinite length or periodic in the axial direction, in which cases heat transfer occurs only through conduction as in a solid. We here investigate numerically heat transfer and the onset of turbulence in such flows by using both periodic and no-slip boundary conditions in the axial direction. We obtain a simple linear criterion t…
Using fully-resolved simulations, we investigate the torque experienced by a finite-length circular cylinder rotating steadily perpendicularly to its symmetry axis. The aspect ratio $χ$, i.e. the ratio of the length of the cylinder to its diameter, is varied from 1 to 15. In the creeping-flow regime, we employ the slender-body theory to derive the expression of the torque up to order 4 with respect to the small parameter $1/\ln(2χ)$. Numerical results agree well with the corresponding predictions for $χ\gtrsim3$. We introduce an \textit{ad hoc} modification in the theoretical prediction to fit…
In this thesis, a variable speed heat conducting cylinder is positioned in the middle of a rectangular channel with an active flow modification system to demonstrate a numerical study of steady two-dimensional mixed convention heat transfer phenomena. In the current study, the lower wall has a discrete isoflux heater installed while the upper wall is kept at an isothermal low temperature. The Prandtl number of air passing through the channel is held constant at 0.71 while the Reynolds and Grashof numbers are greatly varied for four different cylinder configurations, including (a) channels with…
In this paper we have investigated a circular band formation of fluid-rigid particle mixtures in a fully filled cylinder horizontally rotating about its cylinder axis by direct numerical simulation. These phenomena are modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations coupled to the Euler-Newton equations describing the rigid solid motion of the non-neutrally particles. The formation of circular bands studied in this paper is not resulted by mutual interaction between the particles and the periodic inertial waves in the cylinder axis direction (as suggested in Phys. Rev. E, 72, 021407 (2005)), but due to…
We discuss the behavior of partially wetting liquids on a rotating cylinder using a model that takes into account the effects of gravity, viscosity, rotation, surface tension and wettability. Such a system can be considered as a prototype for many other systems where the interplay of spatial heterogeneity and a lateral driving force in the proximity of a first- or second-order phase transition results in intricate behavior. So does a partially wetting drop on a rotating cylinder undergo a depinning transition as the rotation speed is increased, whereas for ideally wetting liquids the behavior …
The flow phenomena around a rotating elliptic cylinder in a channel is studied numerically. The value of the confinement parameter βis varied as \frac{1}{k}, where k = 2, 4, 6, and 8 respectively, to demonstrate the vortex-shedding patterns around the cylinder in the downstream wake. The non-dimensional rotation rate αtakes up 0.5, 1, and 2 as its value. Additionally, the Reynolds number (\textit{Re}) based on the cylinder diameter is taken to be 50, 100, and 150 respectively. A parametric study is performed to explain the changes in drag coefficient \textit{(C_{D})}, lift coefficient \textit{…
A new turbulent Taylor-Couette system consisting of two independently rotating cylinders has been constructed. The gap between the cylinders has a height of 0.927 m, an inner radius of 0.200 m, and a variable outer radius (from 0.279 to 0.220 m). The maximum angular rotation rates of the inner and outer cylinder are 20 and 10 Hz, respectively, resulting in Reynolds numbers up to 3.4 x 10^6 with water as working fluid. With this Taylor-Couette system, the parameter space (Re_i, Re_o, η) extends to (2.0 x 10^6, {\pm}1.4 x 10^6, 0.716-0.909). The system is equipped with bubble injectors, temperat…
A counter-rotating Taylor-Couette flow with relatively small radius ratios of $η$ = 0.2--0.5 was investigated over a wide range of the Reynolds number, from laminar to turbulent regime, by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. We investigated the $η$ dependence of the flow structure and determined a critical value between $η$ = 0.2 and 0.3, below which, the stable outer cylinder side exhibited a modal structure that was different from the Taylor-vortex flow on the inner side. At $η\geq$ 0.3, the Taylor-vortex on the unstable inner side dominated the entire flow field between…
We study the stability of the Couette-Taylor flow between porous cylinders with radial throughflow. It had been shown earlier that this flow can be unstable with respect to non-axisymmetric (azimuthal or helical) waves provided that the radial Reynolds number, $R$ (constructed using the radial velocity at the inner cylinder and its radius), is high. In this paper, we present a very detailed and, in many respects, novel chart of critical curves in a region of moderate values of $R$, and we show that, starting from values of $R$, as low as $10$, the critical modes inherited from the inviscid ins…
A new Taylor-Couette system has been designed and constructed with precise temperature control. Two concentric independently rotating cylinders are able to rotate at maximum rates of $f_i = \pm20$ Hz for the inner cylinder and $f_o = \pm10$ Hz for the outer cylinder. The inner cylinder has an outside radius of $r_i = 75$ mm, and the outer cylinder has an inside radius of $r_o = 105$ mm, resulting in a gap of $d=30$ mm. The height of the gap $L =549$ mm, giving a volume of $V=9.3$l. The geometric parameters are $η= r_i/r_o = 0.714$ and $Γ= L/d = 18.3$. With water as working fluid at room temper…
The transition to turbulence in Taylor-Couette flow often occurs via a sequence of supercritical bifurcations to progressively more complex, yet stable, flows. We describe a subcritical laminar-turbulent transition in the counter-rotating regime mediated by an unstable intermediate state in a system with an axial aspect ratio of $Γ=5.26$ and a radius ratio of $η=0.905$. In this regime, flow visualization experiments and numerical simulations indicate the intermediate state corresponds to an aperiodic flow featuring interpenetrating spirals. Furthermore, the reverse transition out of turbulence…
We experimentally study the behavior of a particle slightly denser than the surrounding liquid in solid body rotating flow. Earlier work revealed that a heavy particle has an unstable equilibrium point in unbounded rotation flows. In the confinement of the rotational flow by a cylindrical wall a heavy sphere with density 1.05 g/cm$^3$ describes an orbital motion in our experiments. This is due to the effect of the wall near the sphere, i.e. a repulsive force ($F_w$). We model $F_w$ on the sphere as a function of the distance from the wall ($L$): $F_W \propto L^{-4}$ as proposed by Takemura and…
This paper experimentally investigates the convection in a fast rotating Tangent Cylinder (TC), for Ekman numbers down to $E=3.36\times10^{-6}$, in a configuration relevant to the liquid core of the Earth. In the apparatus, the TC results from the Proudman-Taylor constraint incurred by rotating a hemispherical fluid vessel heated in its centre by a protruding heating element of cylindrical shape. The resulting convection that develops above the heater, i.e within the TC, is shown to set in for critical Rayleigh numbers and wavenumbers respectively scaling as $Ra_c\sim E^{4/3}$ and $a_c\sim E^{…
In this study, we use numerical simulations to investigate the flow field induced by a single magnetic microrobot rotating with a constant angular speed about an axis perpendicular to an underlying surface. A parallel solver for steady Stokes flow equations based on the boundary-element method is used for simulating these flows. A simple transformation is introduced to extend the predictive capability of the solver to cases with small unsteadiness. Flows induced by four simple robot shapes are investigated: sphere, upright cylinder, horizontally-laid cylinder, and five-pointed star-shaped pris…
The stability of a two-dimensional viscous flow between two rotating porous cylinders is studied. The basic steady flow is the most general rotationally-invariant solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in which the velocity has both radial and azimuthal components, and the azimuthal velocity profile depends on the Reynolds number. It is shown that for a wide range of the parameters of the problem, the basic flow is unstable to small two-dimensional perturbations. Neutral curves in the space of parameters of the problem are computed. Calculations show that the stability properties of this flow…
The distribution of energy loss due to viscosity friction in plane Couette flow and Taylor-Couette Flow between concentric rotating cylinders are studied in detail for various flow conditions. The energy loss is related to the industrial processes in some fluid delivery devices and has significant influence on the flow efficiency, flow stability, turbulent transition, mixing, and heat transfer behaviours, etc. Therefore, it is important to know about the energy loss distribution in the flow domain and to know its influence on the flow for better understanding of the flow physics. The calculati…
We present measurements of the angular momentum flux (torque) in Taylor-Couette flow of water between independently rotating cylinders for all regions of the $\(Ω_1, Ω_2\)$ parameter space at high Reynolds numbers, where $Ω_1$ $\(Ω_2\)$ is the inner (outer) cylinder angular velocity. We find that the Rossby number $Ro = \(Ω_1 - Ω_2\)/Ω_2$ fully determines the state and torque $G$ as compared to $G(Ro = \infty) \equiv \Gi$. The ratio $G/\Gi$ is a linear function of $Ro^{-1}$ in four sections of the parameter space. For flows with radially-increasing angular momentum, our measured torques greatl…

The shallow water equations describing the motion of thin liquid film on the rotating cylinder surface are obtained. These equations are the analog of the modified Boussinesq equations for shallow water and the Korteweg-de Vries equation. It is clear that for rotating cylinder the centrifugal force plays the role of the gravity. For construction the shallow water equations (amplitude equations) usual depth-averaged and multi-scale asymptotic expansion methods are used. Preliminary analysis shows that a thin film of an ideal incompressible fluid precesses around the axis of the cylinder with ve…
We study numerically some possible vortex configurations in a rotating cylinder that is tilted with respect to the rotation axis and where different numbers of vortices can be present at given rotation velocity. In a long cylinder at small tilt angles the vortices tend to align along the cylinder axis and not along the rotation axis. We also show that the axial flow along the cylinder axis, caused by the tilt, will result in the Ostermeier-Glaberson instability above some critical tilt angle. When the vortices become unstable the final state often appears to be a dynamical steady state, which …
The nonaxisymmetric azimuthal magnetorotational instability is studied for hydromagnetic Taylor-Couette flows between cylinders of finite electrical conductivity. We find that the magnetic Prandtl number Pm determines whether perfectly conducting or insulating boundary conditions lead to lower Hartmann numbers for the onset of instability. Regardless of the imposed rotation profile, for small Pm the solutions for perfectly conducting cylinders become unstable for weaker magnetic fields than the solutions for insulating cylinders. The critical Hartmann and Reynolds numbers form monotonic functi…
We have studied self-sustained, deformable, rotating liquid He cylinders of infinite length. In the normal fluid $^3$He case, we have employed a classical model where only surface tension and centrifugal forces are taken into account, as well as the Density Functional Theory (DFT) approach in conjunction with a semi-classical Thomas-Fermi approximation for the kinetic energy. In both approaches, if the angular velocity is sufficiently large, it is energetically favorable for the $^3$He cylinder to undergo a shape transition, acquiring an elliptic-like cross section which eventually becomes two…
It is shown that a suspension of particles in a partially-filled, horizontal, rotating cylinder is linearly unstable towards axial segregation and an undulation of the free surface at large enough particle concentrations. Relying on the shear-induced diffusion of particles, concentration-dependent viscosity, and the existence of a free surface, our theory provides an explanation of the experiments of Tirumkudulu et al., Phys. Fluids 11, 507-509 (1999); ibid. 12, 1615 (2000).
The energy gradient theory is used to study the instability of Taylor-Couette flow between concentric rotating cylinders. This theory has been proposed in our previous works. In our previous studies, the energy gradient theory was demonstrated to be applicable for wall-bounded parallel flows. It was found that the critical value of the energy gradient parameter Kmax at turbulent transition is about 370-389 for wall-bounded parallel flows (which include plane Poiseuille flow, pipe Poiseuille flow and plane Couette flow) below which no turbulence occurs. In this paper, the detailed derivation fo…
Shear-driven flow between a rotating cylinder and a stationary elliptical enclosure is studied in this paper. Two-dimensional time-dependent Navier Stokes equations are solved using a meshless method where interpolations are done with Polyharmonic Spline Radial Basis Functions. The fluid flow is analyzed for various aspect ratios of the ellipse and eccentric placements of the inner cylinder. Contour plots of vorticity with streamlines, plots of non-dimensional torque, and the angle of eye of the primary vortex are presented in the paper for Reynolds numbers between 200 and 2000. Formation of M…
We consider axisymmetric Boussinesq convection in a shallow cylinder radius, L, and depth, H (<< L), which rotates with angular velocity $Ω$ about its axis of symmetry aligned to the vertical. Constant heat flux boundary conditions, top and bottom, are adopted, for which the onset of instability occurs on a long horizontal length scale provided that $Ω$ is sufficiently small. We investigate the nonlinear development by well-established two-scale asymptotic expansion methods. Comparisons of the results with the direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the primitive governing equations are good at …
Numerical simulation results in recent years show that vortex-induced vibration (VIV) can occur at a subcritical Reynolds number. And the VIV has been observed numerically at Reynolds numbers as low as Re = 20. The current study presents an experimental evidence for the subcritical VIV of a cylinder. We designed and built a rotating channel that makes it possible to perform VIV experiments at subcritical Reynolds numbers. Based on the rotating channel, two sets of tests were carried out for fixed natural frequency with variable incoming flow speed and fixed incoming flow speed with variable na…
Recent studies of rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection at high rotation rates and strong thermal forcing have shown a significant discrepancy in total heat transport between experiments on a confined cylindrical domain on the one hand and simulations on a laterally unconfined periodic domain on the other. This paper addresses this discrepancy using direct numerical simulations on a cylindrical domain. An analysis of the flow field reveals a region of enhanced convection near the wall, the sidewall circulation. The sidewall circulation rotates slowly within the cylinder in anticyclonic direction…
Flow around two rotating side-by-side circular cylinders of equal diameter D is numerically studied at the Reynolds number Re=40-200 and various rotation rate theta_i. The incoming flow is assumed to be two-dimensional laminar flow. The governing equations are the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and solved by the finite volume method (FVM). The ratio of the center-to-center spacing to the cylinder diameter is T/D=2. The objective of the present work is to investigate the effect of rotational speed and Reynolds number on the stability of the flow. The simulation results are compared with…
We study the stability of density stratified flow between co-rotating vertical cylinders with rotation rates $Ω_o < Ω_i$ and radius ratio $r_i/r_o=0.877$, where subscripts $o$ and $i$ refer to the outer and inner cylinders. Just as in stellar and planetary accretion disks, the flow has rotation, anticyclonic shear, and a stabilizing density gradient parallel to the rotation axis. The primary instability of the laminar state leads not to axisymmetric Taylor vortex flow but to the non-axisymmetric {\it stratorotational instability} (SRI), so named by Shalybkov and Rüdiger (2005). The present wor…
In this paper, we investigate the motion of a neutrally buoyant cylinder of an elliptic shape freely moving in two dimensional shear flow by direct numerical simulation. An elliptic shape cylinder in shear flow, when initially being placed at the middle between two walls, either keeps rotating or has a stationary inclination angle depending on the particle Reynolds number $Re=G_r r_a^2/ν$, where $G_r$ is the shear rate, $r_a$ is the semi-long axis of the elliptic cylinder and $ν$ is the kinetic viscosity of the fluid. The critical particle Reynolds number $Re_{cr}$ for the transition from a ro…
We present numerical simulations of vortices that appear via primary bifurcations out of the unstructured circular Couette flow in the Taylor-Couette system with counter-rotating as well as with co-rotating cylinders. The full, time dependent Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a combination of a finite difference and a Galerkin method for a fixed axial periodicity length of the vortex patterns and for a finite system of aspect ratio 12 with rigid nonrotating ends in a setup with radius ratio eta=0.5. Differences in structure, dynamics, symmetry properties, bifurcation and stability behavi…
The main objective of this paper is to study the flow characteristics of a rotating, isothermally heated circular cylinder with a vertical arc-shaped control plate placed downstream. Stream function-Vorticity ($ψ-ω$) formulation of two dimensional (2-D) Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations is considered as the governing equation and the simulations are performed for different distances of the control plate ($0.5$, $1$, $2$, $3$), rotational rates ($0.5$, $1$, $2.07$, $3.25$) at Prandtl number $0.7$ and Reynolds number $150$. The governing equations are discretized using the Higher Order Compact (HOC)…
The statistics of velocity fluctuations of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow are examined. The rotation rate of the inner and outer cylinder are varied while keeping the Taylor number fixed to $1.49 \times 10^{12}$ ($\mathcal{O}(\text{Re})=10^6$). The azimuthal velocity component of the flow is measured using laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). For each experiment $5\times10^6$ datapoints are acquired and carefully analysed. Using extended self-similarity (ESS) \cite{ben93b} the longitudinal structure function exponents are extracted, and are found to weakly depend on the ratio of the rotation rates. …
Direct numerical simulations of Taylor-Couette flow (TC). Shear Reynolds numbers of up to $3\cdot10^5$, corresponding to Taylor numbers of $Ta=4.6\cdot10^{10}$, were reached. Effective scaling laws for the torque are presented. The transition to the ultimate regime, in which asymptotic scaling laws (with logarithmic corrections) for the torque are expected to hold up to arbitrarily high driving, is analysed for different radius ratios $η$, different aspect ratios $Γ$ and different rotation ratios $Ro$. It is shown that the transition is approximately independent of $Ro$ and $Γ$, but depends si…
We consider a ferrofluid cylinder, that is rotating with constant rotation frequency Ωe_z as a rigid body. A homogeneous magnetic field H_0 e_x is applied perpendicular to the cylinder axis e_z. This causes a nonequilibrium situation. Therein the magnetization M and the internal magnetic field H are constant in time and homogeneous within the ferrofluid. According to the Maxwell equations they are related to each other via H = H_0 - M/2. However, H and M are not parallel to each other and their directions differ from that of the applied field H_0. We have analyzed several different theoretical…
