Understanding fundamental kinetic processes is important for many problems, from plasma physics to gas dynamics. A first-principles approach to these problems requires a statistical description via the Boltzmann equation, coupled to appropriate field equations. In this paper we present a novel version of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) algorithm to solve such kinetic equations. Unlike Monte-Carlo methods we use a continuum scheme in which we directly discretize the 6D phase-space using discontinuous basis functions. Our DG scheme eliminates counting noise and aliasing errors that would otherwise contaminate the delicate field-particle interactions. We use modal basis functions with reduced degrees of freedom to improve efficiency while retaining a high formal order of convergence. Our implementation incorporates a number of software innovations: use of JIT compiled top-level language, automatically generated computational kernels and a sophisticated shared-memory MPI implementation to handle velocity space parallelization.
We present a well-balanced nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for compressible Euler equations with gravity. The DG scheme makes use of discontinuous Lagrange basis functions supported at Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre (GLL) nodes together with GLL quadrature using the same nodes. The well-balanced property is achieved by a specific form of source term discretization that depends on the nature of the hydrostatic solution, together with the GLL nodes for quadrature of the source term. The scheme is able to preserve isothermal and polytropic stationary solutions upto machine precision on any mesh …
This work compares two Nitsche-type approaches to treat non-conforming triangulations for a high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) solver for the acoustic conservation equations. The first approach (point-to-point interpolation) uses inexact integration with quadrature points prescribed by a primary element. The second approach uses exact integration (mortaring) by choosing quadratures depending on the intersection between non-conforming elements. In literature, some excellent properties regarding performance and ease of implementation are reported for point-to-point interpolation. However, we…
In this article, we present entropy stable discontinuous Galerkin numerical schemes for equations of special relativistic hydrodynamics with the ideal equation of state. The numerical schemes use the summation by parts (SBP) property of Gauss-Lobatto quadrature rules. To achieve entropy stability for the scheme, we use two-point entropy conservative numerical flux inside the cells and a suitable entropy stable numerical flux at the cell interfaces. The resulting semi-discrete scheme is then shown to entropy stable. Time discretization is performed using SSP Runge-Kutta methods. Several numeric…
Translations or, more generally, coordinate transformations of scalar fields arise in several applications, such as weather, accretion disk and magnetized plasma turbulence modeling. In local studies of accretion disks and magnetized plasmas these coordinate transformations consist of an analytical mapping and enter via sheared-shift boundary conditions. This work introduces a discontinuous Galerkin algorithm to compute these coordinate transformations or boundary conditions based on projections and quadrature-free integrals. The procedure is high-order accurate, preserves certain moments exac…
Moulinec and Suquet introduced FFT-based homogenization in 1994, and twenty years later, their approach is still effective for evaluating the homogenized properties arising from the periodic cell problem. This paper builds on the author's (2013) variational reformulation approximated by trigonometric polynomials establishing two numerical schemes: Galerkin approximation (Ga) and a version with numerical integration (GaNi). The latter approach, fully equivalent to the original Moulinec-Suquet algorithm, was used to evaluate guaranteed upper-lower bounds on homogenized coefficients incorporating…
We present a new high-order accurate Lagrangian discontinuous Galerkin (DG) hydrodynamic method to simulate material dynamics (for e.g., gasses, fluids, and solids) with up to fourth-order accuracy on cubic meshes. The variables, such as specific volume, velocity, specific total energy, and deformation gradient fields within a cell, are represented with a polynomial constructed from a novel hierarchical orthogonal basis about the center of mass, which decouples the moments of the solution because the mass matrix is diagonal. The discontinuity in the polynomials at the cell boundary is addresse…
Three kinds of Fragile Points Methods based on Petrov-Galerkin weak-forms (PG-FPMs) are proposed for analyzing heat conduction problems in nonhomogeneous anisotropic media. This is a follow-up of the previous study on the original FPM based on a symmetric Galerkin weak-form. The trial function is piecewise-continuous, written as local Taylor expansions at the Fragile Points. A modified Radial Basis Function-based Differential Quadrature (RBF-DQ) method is employed for establishing the local approximation. The Dirac delta function, Heaviside step function, and the local fundamental solution of …
The robustness and accuracy of marginally resolved discontinuous Galerkin spectral element computations are evaluated for the standard formulation and a kinetic energy conserving split form on complex flow problems of physical and engineering interest, including the flow over a square cylinder, an airfoil and a plane jet. It is shown that the kinetic energy conserving formulation is significantly more robust than the standard scheme for under-resolved simulations. A disadvantage of the split form is the restriction to Gauss-Lobatto nodes with the inherent underintegration and lower accuracy as…

We develop and test spectral Galerkin schemes to solve the coupled Orr-Sommerfeld (OS) and induction equations for parallel, incompressible MHD in free-surface and fixed-boundary geometries. The schemes' discrete bases consist of Legendre internal shape functions, supplemented with nodal shape functions for the weak imposition of the stress and insulating boundary conditions. The orthogonality properties of the basis polynomials solve the matrix-coefficient growth problem, and eigenvalue-eigenfunction pairs can be computed stably at spectral orders at least as large as p = 3,000 with p-indepen…
We present a high-order accurate reconstructed discontinuous Galerkin (rDG) method in arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation, for solving two-dimensional compressible flows on moving and deforming domains with unstructured curved meshes. The Taylor basis functions in use are defined on the time-dependent domain, on which also the integration and computations are performed. A third order ESDIRK3 scheme is employed for the temporal integration. The Geometric Conservation Law (GCL) is satisfied by modifying the grid velocity terms on the right-hand side of the discretized equations at Ga…
The time-dependent radiation transport equation is discretized using the meshless-local Petrov-Galerkin method with reproducing kernels. The integration is performed using a Voronoi tessellation, which creates a partition of unity that only depends on the position and extent of the kernels. The resolution of the integration automatically follows the particles and requires no manual adjustment. The discretization includes streamline-upwind Petrov-Galerkin stabilization to prevent oscillations and improve numerical conditioning. The angular quadrature is selectively refineable to increase angula…
Split form schemes for Euler and Navier-Stokes equations are useful for computation of turbulent flows due to their better robustness. This is because they satisfy additional conservation properties of the governing equations like kinetic energy preservation leading to a reduction in aliasing errors at high orders. Recently, linear stability issues have been pointed out for these schemes for a density wave problem and we investigate this behaviour for some standard split forms. By deriving linearized equations of split form schemes, we show that most existing schemes do not satisfy a perturbat…
We study the numerical resolution of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a non-linear Schroedinger equation used to simulate the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates. Considering condensates trapped in harmonic potentials, we present an efficient algorithm by making use of a spectral Galerkin method, using a basis set of harmonic oscillator functions, and the Gauss-Hermite quadrature. We apply this algorithm to the simulation of condensate breathing and scissors modes.
