The Kepler spacecraft observed a total of only four AM Herculis cataclysmic variable stars during its lifetime. We analyze the short-cadence K2 light curve of one of those systems, Tau 4 (RX J0502.8+1624), which underwent a serendipitous jump from a low-accretion state into a high state during the final days of the observation. Apart from one brief flare, there was no evidence of accretion during the 70 d of observations of the low state. As Tau 4 transitioned into a high state, the resumption of accretion was very gradual, taking approximately six days (~90 binary orbits). We supplement Tau 4's K2 light curve with time-resolved spectroscopy obtained in both high and low states of accretion. High-excitation lines, such as He II 468.6 nm, were extraordinarily weak, even when the system was actively accreting. This strongly suggests the absence of an accretion shock, placing Tau 4 in the bombardment regime predicted for AM Herculis systems with low accretion rates. In both the high-state and low-state spectra, Zeeman absorption features from the white dwarf's photosphere are present and reveal a surface-averaged field strength of $15\pm2$ MG. Remarkably, the high-state spectra also show Zeeman-split emission lines produced in a region with a field strength of $12\pm1$ MG. Zeeman emission has not been previously reported in an AM Herculis system, and we propose that the phenomenon is caused by a temperature inversion in the WD's atmosphere near the accretion region.
Results of high-cadence multi-colour observations of 121 pre-main sequence stars available from the northern hemisphere are presented. The aim of this survey was to detect transit-like signatures caused by occultation of these young stars and their accretion-induced hot spots by close-in planets and/or dusty clumps. Although none planetary transits were detected, our data allow to determine rotational periods for some T Tauri stars, characterise accretion processes operating in classical T Tauri-type stars in time scales ranging from a few minutes to days, as well as the large-scale dips cause…
Binary star-formation theory predicts that close binaries (a<100 AU) will experience periodic pulsed accretion events as streams of material form at the inner edge of a circumbinary disk, cross a dynamically cleared gap, and feed circumstellar disks or accrete directly onto the stars. The archetype for the pulsed-accretion theory is the eccentric, short-period, classical T Tauri binary DQ Tau. Low-cadence (~daily) broadband photometry has shown brightening events near most periastron passages, just as numerical simulations would predict for an eccentric binary. Magnetic reconnection events (fl…
Recent observational work has indicated that mechanisms for accretion and outflow in Herbig Ae/Be star-disk systems may differ from magnetospheric accretion (MA) as it is thought to occur in T Tauri star-disk systems. In this work, we assess the temporal evolution of spectral lines probing accretion and mass loss in Herbig Ae/Be systems and test for consistency with the MA paradigm. For two Herbig Ae/Be stars, HD 98922 (B9e) and V1295 Aql (A2e), we have gathered multi-epoch (~years) and high-cadence (~minutes) high-resolution optical spectra to probe a wide range of kinematic processes. Employ…
To explore young star variability on a large range of timescales, we have used the MOST satellite to obtain 24 days of continuous, sub-minute cadence, high-precision optical photometry on a field of classical and weak-lined T Tauri stars (TTS) in the Taurus-Auriga star formation complex. Observations of AB Aurigae, SU Aurigae, V396 Aurigae, V397 Aurigae, and HD 31305 reveal brightness fluctuations at the 1-10% level on timescales of hours to weeks. We have further assessed the variability properties with Fourier, wavelet, and autocorrelation techniques, identifying one significant period per s…
The TESS spacecraft observed the asynchronous polar CD Ind at a two-minute cadence almost continuously for 28 days in 2018, covering parts of 5 consecutive cycles of the system's 7.3-day beat period. These observations provide the first uninterrupted photometry of a full spin-orbit beat cycle of an asynchronous polar. Twice per beat cycle, the accretion flow switched between magnetic poles on the white dwarf, causing the spin pulse of the white dwarf (WD) to alternate between two waveforms after each pole-switch. An analysis of the waveforms suggests that one accretion region is continuously v…
We present polarimetric data of CW Tau and DG Tau, two well-known Class II disk/jet systems, obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at 870 $μ$m and 0."2 average resolution. In CW Tau, the total and polarized emission are both smooth and symmetric, with polarization angles almost parallel to the minor axis of the projected disk. In contrast, DG Tau displays a structured polarized emission, with an elongated brighter region in the disk's near side and a belt-like feature beyond about 0."3 from the source. At the same time the total intensity is spatially smooth, with no f…
Interpreting the short-timescale variability of the accreting, young, low-mass stars known as Classical T Tauri stars remains an open task. Month-long, continuous light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\textit{TESS}) have become available for hundreds of T Tauri stars. With this vast data set, identifying connections between the variability observed by \TESS and short-timescale accretion variability is valuable for characterizing the accretion process. To this end, we obtained short-cadence \TESS observations of 14 T Tauri stars in the Taurus star-formation region along w…
We present new photometric and spectroscopic observations and analyses for the eclipsing binary systems V1241 Tau and GQ Dra. Our photometric light and radial velocity curves analyses combining with the TESS light curves show that both are conventional semi-detached binary systems. Their absolute parameters are also derived. We present the $O-C$ analyses of the systems and we propose the most possible orbital period modulating mechanisms. Furthermore, Fourier analyses are applied to the photometric residual data of the systems to check for the pulsational behavior of the components. We conclud…
The mechanism for producing polarized emission from protostellar disks at (sub)millimeter wavelengths is currently uncertain. Classically, polarization is expected from non-spherical grains aligned with the magnetic field. Recently, two alternatives have been suggested. One polarization mechanism is caused by self-scattering from dust grains of sizes comparable to the wavelength while the other mechanism is due to grains aligned with their short axes along the direction of radiation anisotropy. The latter has recently been shown as a likely mechanism for causing the dust polarization detected …
Recent (sub)millimeter polarimetric observations toward the young star HL Tau have successfully detected polarization emission from its circumstellar disk. The polarization pattern observed at 0.87 mm is uniform and parallel to the disk's minor axis, consistent with the self-scattering of thermal emission by dust particles whose maximum radius is $\approx 100~μm$. However, this maximum size is considerably smaller than anticipated from dust evolution models that assume a high sticking efficiency for icy particles. Here, we propose that the unexpectedly small particle size can be explained if C…
The solar active region photospheric magnetic field evolves rapidly during major eruptive events, suggesting appreciable feedback from the corona. Previous studies of these "magnetic imprints" are mostly based on line-of-sight only or lower-cadence vector observations; a temporally resolved depiction of the vector field evolution is hitherto lacking. Here, we introduce the high-cadence (90~s or 135~s) vector magnetogram dataset from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) that is well suited for investigating the phenomenon. These observations allow quantitative characterization of the perm…
We present H-band polarimetric imagery of UX Tau A taken with HiCIAO/AO188 on the Subaru Telescope. UX Tau A has been classified as a pre-transitional disk object, with a gap structure separating its inner and outer disks. Our imagery taken with the 0.15 (21 AU) radius coronagraphic mask has revealed a strongly polarized circumstellar disk surrounding UX Tau A which extends to 120 AU, at a spatial resolution of 0.1 (14 AU). It is inclined by 46 \pm 2 degree as the west side is nearest. Although SED modeling and sub-millimeter imagery suggested the presence of a gap in the disk, with the inner …
Moving magnetic features (MMFs) are small-size magnetic elements that are seen to stream out from sunspots, generally during their decay phase. Several observational results presented in the literature suggest them to be closely related to magnetic filaments that extend from the penumbra of the parent spot. Nevertheless, few observations of MMFs streaming out from spots without penumbra have been reported. The literature still lacks of analyses of the physical properties of these features. We investigate physical properties of monopolar MMFs observed around a small pore that had developed penu…
Millimeter-wavelength polarization measurements offer a promising method for probing the geometry of magnetic fields in circumstellar disks. Single dish observations and theoretical work have hinted that magnetic field geometries might be predominantly toroidal, and that disks should exhibit millimeter polarization fractions of 2-3%. While subsequent work has not confirmed these high polarization fractions, either the wavelength of observation or the target sources differed from the original observations. Here we present new polarimetric observations of three nearby circumstellar disks at 2" r…
We report here results of spectropolarimetric observations of the classical T Tauri star DN Tau carried out (at 2 epochs) with ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope within the `Magnetic Protostars and Planets' programme. We infer that DN Tau, with a photospheric temperature of 3,950+-50 K, a luminosity of 0.8+-0.2 Lsun and a rotation period of 6.32 d, is a ~2Myr-old fully-convective 0.65+-0.05 Msun star with a radius of 1.9+-0.2 Dsun, viewed at an inclination of 35+-10degr. Clear circularly-polarized Zeeman signatures are detected in both photospheric and accretion-powered emission li…
We conducted high-contrast polarimetry observations of T Tau in the H-band, using the HiCIAO instrument mounted on the Subaru Telescope, revealing structures as near as 0.$\arcsec$1 from the stars T Tau N and T Tau S. The whole T Tau system is found to be surrounded by nebula-like envelopes, and several outflow-related structures are detected in these envelopes. We analyzed the detailed polarization patterns of the circumstellar structures near each component of this triple young star system and determined constraints on the circumstellar disks and outflow structures. We suggest that the nearl…
We present the detection of day-timescale periodic variability in the r-band lightcurve of newly outbursting FU Orionis-type object HBC 722, taken from > 42 nights of observation with the CQUEAN instrument on the McDonald Observatory 2.1m telescope. The optical/near-IR lightcurve of HBC 722 shows a complex array of periodic variability, clustering around 5.8 day (0.044 mag amplitude) and 1.28 day (0.016 mag amplitude) periods, after removal of overall baseline variation. We attribute the unusual number of comparable strength signals to a phenomenon related to the temporary increase in accretio…
We analyze high-cadence vector magnetograms (135~s) and flare-ribbon observations of 37 flares from the Solar Dynamics Observatory to understand the spatial and temporal properties of changes in the photospheric vector magnetic field and their relationship to footpoints of reconnected fields. Confirming previous studies, we find that the largest permanent changes in the horizontal field component lie near the polarity inversion line, whereas changes in the vertical field are less pronounced and are distributed throughout the active region. We find that pixels swept up by ribbons do not always …
By performing non-masked polarization imaging with Subaru/HiCIAO, polarized scattered light from the inner region of the disk around the GG Tau A system was successfully detected in the $H$ band with a spatial resolution of approximately 0.07$\arcsec$, revealing the complicated inner disk structures around this young binary. This paper reports the observation of an arc-like structure to the north of GG Tau Ab and part of a circumstellar structure that is noticeable around GG Tau Aa extending to a distance of approximately 28 AU from the primary star. The speckle noise around GG Tau Ab constrai…
