This paper studies the asymptotic behavior of coexistence steady states of the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model as both cross-diffusion coefficients tend to infinity at the same rate. In the case when either one of two cross-diffusion coefficients tends to infinity, Lou and Ni (1999) derived a couple of limiting systems, which characterize the asymptotic behavior of coexistence steady states. Recently, a formal observation by Kan-on (2020) implied the existence of a limiting system including the nonstationary problem as both cross-diffusion coefficients tend to infinity at the same rate. This paper gives a rigorous proof of his observation as far as the stationary problem. As a key ingredient of the proof, we establish a uniform $L^{\infty}$ estimate for all steady states. Thanks to this a priori estimate, we show that the asymptotic profile of coexistence steady states can be characterized by a solution of either of two limiting systems.
We derive the uniqueness of weak solutions to the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) systems using the adjoint problem argument. Combining with [PT17] we then derive the well-posedness for the SKT systems in space dimension $d\le 4$
The existence of global weak solutions to the cross-diffusion model of Shigesada, Kawasaki, and Teramoto for an arbitrary number of species is proved. The model consists of strongly coupled parabolic equations for the population densities in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions, and it describes the dynamics of the segregation of the population species. The diffusion matrix is neither symmetric nor positive semidefinite. A new logarithmic entropy allows for an improved condition on the coefficients of heavily nonsymmetric diffusion matrices, without imposing the detailed-balance c…
In a previous paper(2021), the author studied the asymptotic behavior of coexistence steady-states to the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model as both cross-diffusion coefficients tend to infinity at the same rate. As a result, he proved that the asymptotic behavior can be characterized by a limiting system that consists of a semilinear elliptic equation and an integral constraint. This paper studies the set of solutions of the limiting system. The first main result gives sufficient conditions for the existence/nonexistence of nonconstant solutions to the limiting system by a topological approach…
Global strong solutions for the triangular Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto cross-diffusion system in three dimensions and parabolic regularisation for increasing functions
Global strong solutions for the triangular Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto cross-diffusion system in three dimensions and parabolic regularisation for increasing functions
We derive the global existence of weak solutions of the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto systems in space dimension less or equal to 4 with a rather general condition on the coefficients. The existence is established using finite differences in time with truncations and an argument of Stampachia's maximum principle to show the positivity of the solutions. We derive also the existence of a weak global attractor.
The existence of global nonnegative martingale solutions to a cross-diffusion system of Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto type with multiplicative noise is proven. The model describes the segregation dynamics of populations with an arbitrary number of species. The diffusion matrix is generally neither symmetric nor positive semidefinite, which excludes standard methods. Instead, the existence proof is based on the entropy structure of the model, approximated by a Wong-Zakai argument, and on suitable higher moment estimates and fractional time regularity. In the case without self-diffusion, the lack …
Global existence of strong solutions and the existence of global and atrractors are established for generalized Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto models on planar domains. The cross diffusion and reaction can have polynomial growth of any order.
We study quasilinear reaction diffusion systems relative to the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model. Nonlinearity standing for the external force is provided with mass dissipation. Estimate in several norms of the solution is provided under the restriction of diffusion coefficients, growth rate of reaction, and space dimension.
We present an approach based on entropy and duality methods for triangular reaction cross diffusion systems of two equations, in which cross diffusion terms appear only in one of the equations. Thanks to this approach, we recover and extend many existing results on the classical triangular Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model.
The global existence of classical solutions to cross diffusion systems of more than 2 equations given on a planar domain is established. The results can apply to generalized Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) and food pyramid models whose diffusion and reaction can have polynomial growth of any order.
We establish the positivity of weak (and very weak) solutions to a class of cross diffusion systems which is inspired by models in mathematical biology/ecology, in particular the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) model in population biology. Examples and counterexamples will be provided to show that our contions are near optimal.
We consider some cross diffusion systems which is inspired by models in mathematical biology/ecology, in particular the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) model in population biology. We establish the global existence of strong solutions to systems for multiple species having equal either diffusion or reaction rates. The systems are given on bounded domains of arbitrary dimension.
For a class of reaction cross-diffusion systems of two equations with a cross-diffusion term in the first equation and with self-diffusion terms, we prove that the unique local smooth solution given by Amann theorem is actually global. This class of systems arises in Population dynamics, and extends the triangular Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto system when general power-laws growth are considered in the reaction and diffusion rates.
We establish the uniqueness and regularity of weak (and very weak) solutions to a class of cross diffusion systems which is inspired by models in mathematical biology/ecology, in particular the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) model in population biology. No boundedness assumption on these solutions is supposed here as known techniques for scalar equations such as maximum/comparison principles are generally unavailable for systems. Furthermore, for planar domains we show that unbounded weak solutions satisfying mild integrability conditions are in fact smooth.
The uniqueness of bounded weak solutions to strongly coupled parabolic equations in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions is shown. The equations include cross-diffusion and drift terms and are coupled selfconsistently to the Poisson equation. The model class contains special cases of the Maxwell-Stefan equations for gas mixtures, generalized Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto equations for population dynamics, and volume-filling models for ion transport. The uniqueness proof is based on a combination of the $H^{-1}$ technique and the entropy method of Gajewski.
We establish the existence of strong solutions to a class of cross diffusion systems on $\RR^N$ consists of $m$ equations ($m,N\ge 2$). which generalizes the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) model in population dynamics. We introduce the concept of a {\em strong-weak solution} of the systems and show that their existence can be established under weaker conditions. These {\em strong-weak solutions} coincide with strong solutions so that the existence of strong solutions is proved. The SKT model on planar domains ($N=2$) with cubic diffusions and advections is completely solved.
The weak-strong uniqueness for solutions to reaction-cross-diffusion systems in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions is proved. The system generalizes the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto population model to an arbitrary number of species. The diffusion matrix is neither symmetric nor positive definite, but the system possesses a formal gradient-flow or entropy structure. No growth conditions on the source terms are imposed. It is shown that any renormalized solution coincides with a strong solution with the same initial data, as long as the strong solution exists. The proof is based o…
We investigate the global time existence of smooth solutions for the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto system of cross-diffusion equations of two competing species in population dynamics. If there are self-diffusion in one species and no cross-diffusion in the other, we show that the system has a unique smooth solution for all time in bounded domains of any dimension. We obtain this result by deriving global $W^{1,p}$-estimates of Calderón-Zygmund type for a class of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations with self-diffusion. These estimates are achieved by employing Caffarelli-Peral perturbation te…
This paper solves partially a question suggested by Fontbona and Méléard in a paper published in 2015. The issue is to obtain rigorously cross-diffusion systems à la Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto as the limit of relaxed systems in which the cross-diffusion and reaction coefficients are non-local. We depart from the existence result established by Fontbona Méléard for a general class of non-local systems and study the corresponding asymptotic as the convolution kernels tend to Dirac masses, but only in the case of (strictly) triangular systems, with bounded coefficients. Our approach is based on …
The global-in-time existence of renormalized solutions to reaction-cross-diffu-sion systems for an arbitrary number of variables in bounded domains with no-flux boundary conditions is proved. The cross-diffusion part describes the segregation of population species and is a generalization of the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model. The diffusion matrix is not diagonal and generally neither symmetric nor positive semi-definite, but the system possesses a formal gradient-flow or entropy structure. The reaction part includes reversible reactions of mass-action kinetics and does not obey any growth c…
In this paper we consider the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) model to account for stable inhomogeneous steady states exhibiting spatial segregation, which describe a situation of coexistence of two competing species. We provide a deeper understanding on the conditions required on both the cross-diffusion and the reaction coefficients for non-homogeneous steady states to exist, by combining a detailed linearized analysis with advanced numerical bifurcation methods via the continuation software pde2path. We report some numerical experiments suggesting that, when cross-diffusion is taken into …
The global-in-time existence of nonnegative bounded weak solutions to a class of cross-diffusion systems for two population species is proved. The diffusivities are assumed to depend linearly on the population densities in such a way that a certain formal gradient-flow structure holds. The main feature of these systems is that the diffusion matrix may be neither symmetric nor positive definite. The key idea of the proof is to employ the boundedness-by-entropy principle which yields at the same time the existence of global weak solutions and their boundedness. In particular, the uniform bounded…
A general class of cross-diffusion systems for two population species in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions and Lotka-Volterra-type source terms is analyzed. Although the diffusion coefficients are assumed to depend linearly on the population densities, the equations are strongly coupled. Generally, the diffusion matrix is neither symmetric nor positive definite. Three main results are proved: the existence of global uniformly bounded weak solutions, their convergence to the constant steady state in the weak competition case, and the uniqueness of weak solutions. The results hol…
The global-in-time existence of bounded weak solutions to general cross-diffusion systems describing the evolution of $n$ population species is proved. The equations are considered in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions. The system possesses a Laplacian structure, which allows for the derivation of uniform $L^\infty$ bounds, and an entropy structure, which yields suitable gradient estimates. Because of the boundedness, no growth conditions for the transition and interaction rates need to be assumed. The existence proof is based on a fixed-point argument first used by Desvillettes…
H{ö}lder regularity of parabolic equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions and application to reaction-diffusion and reaction-cross-diffusion systems
Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an entropy structure for certain classes of cross-diffusion systems with diffusion matrix $A(u)$ are derived, based on results from matrix factorization. The entropy structure is important in the analysis for such equations since $A(u)$ is typically neither symmetric nor positive definite. In particular, the normal ellipticity of $A(u)$ for all $u$ and the symmetry of the Onsager matrix implies its positive definiteness and hence an entropy structure. If $A$ is constant or nearly constant in a certain sense, the existence of an entropy s…
The existence of global-in-time weak solutions to reaction-cross-diffusion systems for an arbitrary number of competing population species is proved. The equations can be derived from an on-lattice random-walk model with general transition rates. In the case of linear transition rates, it extends the two-species population model of Shigesada, Kawasaki, and Teramoto. The equations are considered in a bounded domain with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. The existence proof is based on a refined entropy method and a new approximation scheme. Global existence follows under a detailed balan…
The convergence to equilibrium of renormalized solutions to reaction-cross-diffusion systems in a bounded domain under no-flux boundary conditions is studied. The reactions model complex balanced chemical reaction networks coming from mass-action kinetics and thus do not obey any growth condition, while the diffusion matrix is of cross-diffusion type and hence nondiagonal and neither symmetric nor positive semi-definite, but the system admits a formal gradient-flow or entropy structure. The diffusion term generalizes the population model of Shigesada, Kawasaki and Teramoto to an arbitrary numb…
In this paper, we consider the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) model, which presents cross-diffusion terms describing competition pressure effects. Even though the reaction part does not present the activator-inhibitor structure, cross-diffusion can destabilise the homogeneous equilibrium. However, in the full cross-diffusion system and weak competition regime, the cross-diffusion terms have an opposite effect and the bifurcation structure of the system modifies increasing the interspecific competition pressure. The major changes in the bifurcation structure, the type of pitchfork bifurcatio…
Population cross-diffusion systems of Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto type are derived in a mean-field-type limit from stochastic, moderately interacting many-particle systems for multiple population species in the whole space. The diffusion term in the stochastic model depends nonlinearly on the interactions between the individuals, and the drift term is the gradient of the environmental potential. In the first step, the mean-field limit leads to an intermediate nonlocal model. The local cross-diffusion system is derived in the second step in a moderate scaling regime, when the interaction potent…
In this article we show a $C^{0,α}$-partial regularity result for solutions of a certain class of cross-diffusion systems with entropy structure. Under slightly more stringent conditions on the system, we are able to obtain a $C^{1,α}$-partial regularity result. Amongst others, our results yield the partial $C^{1,α}$-regularity of weak solutions of the Maxwell-Stefan system, as well as the partial $C^{1,α}$-regularity of bounded weak solutions of the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model. The classical partial regularity theory for nonlinear parabolic systems as developed by Giaquinta and Struwe i…
In this contribution we obtain partial $C^{0,α}$-regularity for bounded solutions of a certain class of cross-diffusion systems, which are strongly coupled, degenerate quasilinear parabolic systems. Under slightly more restrictive assumptions, we obtain partial $C^{1,α}$-regularity. The cross-diffusion systems that we consider have a formal gradient flow structure, in the sense that they are formally identical to the gradient flow of a convex entropy functional. Furthermore, we assume that the cross-diffusion systems are not volume-filling. The main novel tool that we introduce in this contrib…
