We show that local correlators in a wide class of kicked chains can be calculated exactly at light cone edges. Extending previous works on dual-unitary systems, the correlators between local operators are expressed through the expectation values of transfer matrices $T$ with small dimensions. Contrary to the previous studies, our results are not restricted to dual-unitary systems with spatial-temporal symmetry of the dynamics. They hold for a generic case without fine tuning of model parameters. The results are exemplified on the kicked Ising spin chain model, where we provide an explicit formula for two-point correlators near light cone edges beyond the dual-unitary regime.
We show that for dual-unitary kicked chains, built upon a pair of complex Hadamard matrices, correlators of strictly local, traceless operators vanish identically for sufficiently long chains. On the other hand, operators supported at pairs of adjacent chain sites, generically, exhibit nontrivial correlations along the light cone edges. In agreement with Bertini et. al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 210601 (2019)], they can be expressed through the expectation values of a transfer matrix $T$. Furthermore, we identify a remarkable family of dual-unitary models where an explicit information on the spec…
Previously, we demonstrated that the dynamics of kicked spin chains possess a remarkable duality property. The trace of the unitary evolution operator for $N$ spins at time $T$ is related to one of a non-unitary evolution operator for $T$ spins at time $N$. Using this duality relation we obtain the oscillating part of the density of states for a large number of spins. Furthermore, the duality relation explains the anomalous short-time behavior of the spectral form factor previously observed in the literature.
We study quantum chaos and spectral correlations in periodically driven (Floquet) fermionic chains with long-range two-particle interactions, in the presence and absence of particle number conservation ($U(1)$) symmetry. We analytically show that the spectral form factor precisely follows the prediction of random matrix theory in the regime of long chains, and for timescales that exceed the so-called Thouless/Ehrenfest time which scales with the size $L$ as ${\cal O}(L^2)$, or ${\cal O}(L^0)$, in the presence, or absence of $U(1)$ symmetry, respectively. Using random phase assumption which ess…
Determining the border between ergodic and localized behavior is of central interest for interacting many-body systems. We consider here the recently very popular spin-chain model that is periodically excited. A convenient description of such a many-body system is achieved by the dual operator that evolves the system in contrast to the time-evolution operator not in time but in particle direction. We identify in this paper the largest eigenvalue of a function based on the dual operator as a convenient tool to determine if the system shows ergodic or many-body localized features. By perturbatio…
We consider the long-time limit of out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) in two classes of quantum lattice models with time evolution governed by local unitary quantum circuits and maximal butterfly velocity $v_{B} = 1$. Using a transfer matrix approach, we present analytic results for the long-time value of the OTOC on and inside the light cone. First, we consider `dual-unitary' circuits with various levels of ergodicity, including the integrable and non-integrable kicked Ising model, where we show exponential decay away from the light cone and relate both the decay rate and the long-time val…
We provide evidence that a clean kicked Bose-Hubbard model exhibits a many-body dynamically localized phase. This phase shows ergodicity breaking up to the largest sizes we were able to consider. We argue that this property persists in the limit of large size. The Floquet states violate eigenstate thermalization and then the asymptotic value of local observables depends on the initial state and is not thermal. This implies that the system does not generically heat up to infinite temperature, for almost all the initial states. Differently from many-body localization here the entanglement entrop…
We study the dynamics of periodically-kicked many-body systems away from the high-frequency regime, and discuss a family of Floquet systems where the notion of prethermalization can be naturally extended to intermediate and low driving frequencies. We investigate numerically the dynamics of both integrable and nonintegrable systems, and report on the formation of a long-lived prethermal plateau, akin to the high-frequency limit, where the system thermalizes with respect to an effective Hamiltonian captured by the inverse-frequency expansion (IFE). Unlike the high-frequency regime, we find that…
We compute the ground state correlation functions of an exactly solvable chain of integer spins, recently introduced in [R. Movassagh and P. W. Shor, arXiv:1408.1657], whose ground-state can be expressed in terms of a uniform superposition of all colored Motzkin paths. Our analytical results show that for spin s$\ge$2 there is a violation of the cluster decomposition property. This has to be contrasted with s=1, where the cluster property holds. Correspondingly, for s=1 one gets a light-cone profile in the propagation of excitations after a local quench, while the cone is absent for s=2, as sh…
We find that localised perturbations in a chaotic classical many-body system-- the classical Heisenberg We find that the effects of a localised perturbation in a chaotic classical many-body system--the classical Heisenberg chain at infinite temperature--spread ballistically with a finite speed even when the local spin dynamics is diffusive. We study two complementary aspects of this butterfly effect: the rapid growth of the perturbation, and its simultaneous ballistic (light-cone) spread, as characterised by the Lyapunov exponents and the butterfly speed respectively. We connect this to recent…
We show that the light cone-like structures that form in spin chains after a quench are quantum caustics. Their natural description is in terms of catastrophe theory and this implies: 1) a hierarchy of light cone structures corresponding to the different catastrophes; 2) dressing by characteristic wave functions that obey scaling laws determined by the Arnol'd and Berry indices; 3) a network of vortex-antivortex pairs in space-time inside the cone. We illustrate the theory by giving explicit calculations for the transverse field Ising model and the XY model, finding fold catastrophes dressed b…
We derive a Moyal dynamical equation that describes exact time evolution in generic (inhomogeneous) noninteracting spin-chain models. Assuming quasistationarity, we develop a hydrodynamic theory. The question at hand is whether some large-time corrections are captured by higher-order hydrodynamics. We consider in particular the dynamics after that two chains, prepared in different conditions, are joined together. In these situations a light cone, separating regions with macroscopically different properties, emerges from the junction. In free fermionic systems some observables close to the ligh…
The effect of a local instantaneous quantum dynamical process (QDP), either unitary or non-unitary, on the quantum state transfer through a unitary Hamiltonian evolution is investigated for both integrable and non-integrable dynamics. There are interference effects of the quantum state propagation and the QDP signal propagation. The state transfer fidelity is small for further sites, from the site where the information is coded, indicating a finite speed for the propagation of the quantum correlation. There is a small change in the state transfer fidelity for the case of non- unitary QDP inter…
We study the light-cone and front dynamics of a single particle continuous time extended quantum walk on a one dimensional lattice with finite range hopping. We show that, in general, for an initially localized state, propagating wave fronts can be characterized as ordinary or extremal fronts with the latter exhibiting an anomalous sub-diffusive scaling behaviour in the front region. We investigate the dynamical global and local scaling properties of the cumulative probability distribution function for the extended walk with nearest and next-nearest neighbour hopping using analytical and numer…
We investigate the time evolution of density, spin, and pairing correlation functions in one-dimensional $t$-$J$ models following a quantum quench using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG). While density and spin correlation functions show the typical light-cone behavior over a wide range of parameters, in pairing correlation functions it is strongly suppressed. This is supported by time-dependent BCS theory, where the light-cone in the pairing correlation functions is found to be at least two orders of magnitude weaker than in the density correlator. These findings…
We study the light-cone velocity for global quenches in the non-interacting XY chain starting from a class of initial states that are eigenstates of the local $z$-component of the spin. We point out how translation invariance of the initial state can affect the maximal speed at which correlations spread. As a consequence the light-cone velocity can be state-dependent also for non-interacting systems: a new effect of which we provide clear numerical evidence and analytic predictions. Analogous considerations, based on numerical results, are drawn for the evolution of the entanglement entropy.
We consider the non-equilibrium physics induced by joining together two tight binding fermionic chains to form a single chain. Before being joined, each chain is in a many-fermion ground state. The fillings (densities) in the two chains might be the same or different. We present a number of exact results for the correlation functions in the non-interacting case. We present a short-time expansion, which can sometimes be fully resummed, and which reproduces the so-called `light cone' effect or wavefront behavior of the correlators. For large times, we show how all interesting physical regimes ma…
We consider a class of random processes on graphs that include the discrete Bak-Sneppen (DBS) process and the several versions of the contact process (CP), with a focus on the former. These processes are parametrized by a probability $0\leq p \leq 1$ that controls a local update rule. Numerical simulations reveal a phase transition when $p$ goes from 0 to 1. Analytically little is known about the phase transition threshold, even for one-dimensional chains. In this article we consider a power-series approach based on representing certain quantities, such as the survival probability or the expec…
This work concerns the dynamical two-point spin correlation functions of the transverse Ising quantum chain at finite (non-zero) temperature, in the universal region near the quantum critical point. They are correlation functions of twist fields in the massive Majorana fermion quantum field theory. At finite temperature, these are known to satisfy a set of integrable partial differential equations, including the sinh-Gordon equation. We apply the classical inverse scattering method to study them, finding that the ``initial scattering data'' corresponding to the correlation functions are simply…
We have calculated the probability distribution function G(R,L|R',0) of the end-to-end vector R-R' and the mean-square end-to-end distance (R-R')^2 of a Gaussian polymer chain embedded on a sphere S^(D-1) in D dimensions and on a cylinder, a cone and a curved torus in 3-D. We showed that: surface curvature induces a geometrical localization area; at short length the polymer is locally "flat" and (R-R')^2 = L l in all cases; at large scales, (R-R')^2 is constant for the sphere, it is linear in L for the cylinder and reaches different constant values for the torus. The cone vertex induces (funct…
We consider the low-temperature transport properties of critical one-dimensional systems which can be described, at equilibrium, by a Luttinger liquid. We focus on the prototypical setting where two semi-infinite chains are prepared in two thermal states at small but different temperatures and suddenly joined together. At large distances $x$ and times $t$, conformal field theory characterizes the energy transport in terms of a single light cone spreading at the sound velocity $v$. Energy density and current take different constant values inside the light cone, on its left, and on its right, re…
In this paper, we study the equilibrium properties of polymer chains end-tethered to a fluid membrane. The loss of conformational entropy of the polymer results in an inhomogeneous pressure field that we calculate for gaussian chains. We estimate the effects of excluded volume through a relation between pressure and concentration. Under the polymer pressure, a soft surface will deform. We calculate the deformation profile for a fluid membrane and show that close to the grafting point, this profile assumes a cone-like shape, independently of the boundary conditions. Interactions between differe…
We obtain exact formulas for the time-dependence of a few physical observables for the open XX spin chain with Lindbladian dynamics. Our analysis is based on the fact that the Lindblad equation for an arbitrary open quadratic system of $N$ fermions is explicitly solved in terms of diagonalization of a $4N\times4N$ matrix called structure matrix by following the scheme of the third quantization. We mainly focus on the time-dependence of magnetization and spin current. As a short-time behavior at a given site, we observe the plateau regime except near the center of the chain. Basic features of t…
Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) can be used to effectively describe one-dimensional quantum many-body systems such as ultracold atoms, charges in nanowires, superconducting circuits, and gapless spin chains. Their properties are given by two parameters, the propagation velocity and the Luttinger parameter. Here we study inhomogeneous TLLs where these are promoted to functions of position and demonstrate that they profoundly affect the dynamics: In general, besides curving the light cone, we show that propagation is no longer ballistically localized to the light-cone trajectories, different f…
Non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems are attracting widespread interest for their exotic properties, including unconventional quantum criticality and topology. Here we study how quantum information and correlations spread under a quantum quench generated by a prototypical non-Hermitian spin chain. Using the mapping to fermions we solve exactly the problem and compute the entanglement entropy and the correlation dynamics in the thermodynamic limit. Depending on the quench parameters, we identify two dynamical phases. One is characterized by rapidly saturating entanglement and correlations. T…
