We study quantum chaos and spectral correlations in periodically driven (Floquet) fermionic chains with long-range two-particle interactions, in the presence and absence of particle number conservation ($U(1)$) symmetry. We analytically show that the spectral form factor precisely follows the prediction of random matrix theory in the regime of long chains, and for timescales that exceed the so-called Thouless/Ehrenfest time which scales with the size $L$ as ${\cal O}(L^2)$, or ${\cal O}(L^0)$, in the presence, or absence of $U(1)$ symmetry, respectively. Using random phase assumption which essentially requires long-range nature of interaction, we demonstrate that the Thouless time scaling is equivalent to the behavior of the spectral gap of a classical Markov chain, which is in the continuous-time (Trotter) limit generated, respectively, by a gapless $XXX$, or gapped $XXZ$, spin-1/2 chain Hamiltonian.
Quantum interference can terminate energy growth in a continually kicked system, via a single-particle ergodicity-breaking mechanism known as dynamical localization. The effect of many-body interactions on dynamically localized states, while important to a fundamental understanding of quantum decoherence, has remained unexplored despite a quarter-century of experimental studies. We report the experimental realization of a tunably-interacting kicked quantum rotor ensemble using a Bose-Einstein condensate in a pulsed optical lattice. We observe signatures of a prethermal localized plateau, follo…
Unlike classical system, understanding ergodicity from phase space mixing remains unclear for interacting quantum systems due to the absence of phase space trajectories. By considering an interacting spin model known as kicked coupled top, we elucidate the manifestation of phase space dynamics on local ergodic behavior of its quantum counterpart and quantum scarring phenomena. A transition to chaos occurs by increasing the kicking strength, and in the mixed phase space, the islands of regular motions within the chaotic sea clearly exhibit deviation from ergodicity, which we quantify from entan…
Quantum directed transport can be realized in non-interacting, deterministic, chaotic systems by appropriately breaking the spatio-temporal symmetries in the potential. In this work, the focus is on the class of interacting quantum systems whose classical limit is chaotic. In this limit, one subsystem effectively acts as a source of "noise" to the other leading to temporal symmetry breaking. Thus, the quantum directed currents can be generated with two ingredients -- broken spatial symmetry in the potential and presence of interactions. This is demonstrated in two-body interacting kicked rotor…
We study spectral form factor in periodically-kicked bosonic chains. We consider a family of models where a Hamiltonian with the terms diagonal in the Fock space basis, including random chemical potentials and pair-wise interactions, is kicked periodically by another Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor hopping and pairing terms. We show that for intermediate-range interactions, random phase approximation can be used to rewrite the spectral form factor in terms of a bi-stochastic many-body process generated by an effective bosonic Hamiltonian. In the particle-number conserving case, i.e., when pa…
We investigate the onset of chaos in a periodically kicked Dicke model (KDM), using the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) as a diagnostic tool, in both the oscillator and the spin subspaces. In the large spin limit, the classical Hamiltonian map is constructed, which allows us to investigate the corresponding phase space dynamics and to compute the Lyapunov exponent. We show that the growth rate of the OTOC for the canonically conjugate coordinates of the oscillator is able to capture the Lyapunov exponent in the chaotic regime. The onset of chaos is further investigated using the saturation…
Recent numerical advances in the field of strongly correlated electron systems allow the calculation of the entanglement spectrum and entropies for interacting fermionic systems. An explicit determination of the entanglement (modular) Hamiltonian has proven to be a considerably more difficult problem, and only a few results are available. We introduce a technique to directly determine the entanglement Hamiltonian of interacting fermionic models by means of auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We implement our method on the one-dimensional Hubbard chain partitioned into two segments…
Recent advances in the field of strongly correlated electron systems allow to access the entanglement properties of interacting fermionic models, by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We briefly review the techniques used in this context to determine the entanglement entropies and correlations of the entanglement Hamiltonian. We further apply these methods to compute the spin two-point function of entanglement Hamiltonian for a stripe embedded into a correlated topological insulator. Further we discuss a recent method that allows an unbiased, numerically exact, direct determination of the entan…
We study the response of a particle current to dissipative dephasing in an interacting, few-body fermionic lattice system. The particles are prepared in the ground state in presence of an artificial magnetic gauge field, which is subsequently quenched to zero. The initial current decays non-trivially in the dissipative environment and we explore the emerging dynamics and its dependence on various system parameters.
Determining the border between ergodic and localized behavior is of central interest for interacting many-body systems. We consider here the recently very popular spin-chain model that is periodically excited. A convenient description of such a many-body system is achieved by the dual operator that evolves the system in contrast to the time-evolution operator not in time but in particle direction. We identify in this paper the largest eigenvalue of a function based on the dual operator as a convenient tool to determine if the system shows ergodic or many-body localized features. By perturbatio…
We consider systems of weakly interacting fermions on a lattice. The corresponding free fermionic system is assumed to have a ground state separated by a gap from the rest of the spectrum. We prove that, if both the interaction and the free Hamiltonian are sums of sufficiently rapidly decaying terms, and if the interaction is sufficiently weak, then the interacting system has a spectral gap as well, uniformly in the lattice size. Our approach relies on convergent fermionic perturbation theory, thus providing an alternative method to the one used recently in [MB Hastings. arXiv:1706.02270], and…
We investigate the dynamics of bound states of two interacting particles, either bosons or fermions, performing a continuous-time quantum walk on a one-dimensional lattice. We consider the situation where the distance between both particles has a hard bound, and the richer situation where the particles are bound by a smooth confining potential. The main emphasis is on the velocity characterizing the ballistic spreading of these bound states, and on the structure of the asymptotic distribution profile of their center-of-mass coordinate. The latter profile generically exhibits many internal fron…
We construct a quantum Monte Carlo algorithm for interacting fermions using the two-body density as the fundamental quantity. The central idea is mapping the interacting fermionic system onto an auxiliary system of interacting bosons. The correction term is approximated using correlated wave functions for the interacting system, resulting in an effective potential that represents the nodal surface. We calculate the properties of 3He and find good agreement with experiment and with other theoretical work. In particular, our results for the total energy agree well with other calculations where t…
Entanglement in a pure state of a many-body system can be characterized by the Rényi entropies $S^{(α)}=\ln\textrm{tr}(ρ^α)/(1-α)$ of the reduced density matrix $ρ$ of a subsystem. These entropies are, however, difficult to access experimentally and can typically be determined for small systems only. Here we show that for free fermionic systems in a Gaussian state and with particle number conservation, $\ln S^{(2)}$ can be tightly bound by the much easier accessible Rényi number entropy $S^{(2)}_N=-\ln \sum_n p^2(n)$ which is a function of the probability distribution $p(n)$ of the total parti…
We show that for closed finite sized systems with an odd number of real fermionic modes, even in the presence of interactions, there are always at least two fermionic operators that commute with the Hamiltonian. There is a zero mode corresponding to the fermion parity operator, as shown by Akhmerov, as well as additional linearly independent zero modes, one of which is 1) the one that is continuously connected to the Majorana mode solution in the non-interacting limit, and 2) less prone to decoherence when the system is opened to contact with an infinite bath. We also show that in the idealized…
We develop a method of calculating the full-counting statistics for a non-interacting fermionic system coupled to the memory-less reservoirs. The evolution of the system is described by the Lindblad equation. By the basis change the Liouvillian operator is brought to the quadratic form. This allows us a straightforward calculation of any observable in the non-equilibrium steady state. We introduce the counting field in the Lindblad equation which brings us to the generating function and helps us to obtain all cumulants of the charge transport. For the two-site system we give the expression for…
We study ensembles of fermionic cold-atom quantum wires with tunable transverse mode population and single-wire resolution. From in situ density profiles, we determine the temperature of the atomic wires in the weakly interacting limit and reconstruct the underlying potential landscape. By varying atom number and temperature, we control the occupation of the transverse modes and study the 1D-3D crossover. In the 1D limit, we observe an increase of the reduced temperature $T/T_{F}$ at nearly constant entropy per particle $S/N k_{B}$. The ability to probe individual atomic wires in situ paves th…
