In this work we present IMRPhenomTP, a time domain phenomenological model for the dominant $l=2$, $m=|2|$ modes of coalescing black hole binary systems and its extension to describe general precessing systems within the "twisting up" approximation. The underlying non-precessing model is calibrated to the new release of Numerical Relativity simulations of the SXS Collaboration and its accuracy is comparable to the state-of-the-art non-precessing dominant mode models as IMRPhenomX and SEOBNRv4. The precessing extension allows for flexibility choosing the Euler angles of the time-dependent rotation between the co-precessing and the inertial reference systems, including the single spin NNLO and the double spin MSA PN descriptions present in other models, numerical integration of the orbit averaged spin evolution equations, different choices for the evolution of the orbital angular momentum norm and a simple approximation to the ringdown behaviour.
We report application of a method for extracting gravitational waves to three-dimensional numerical simulation on coalescing binary neutron stars. We found the extracted wave form includes the componets corresponding to the quadrupole part in the Newtonian potential of the background metric, if it is monitored at a position not far from the central stars. We present how to eliminate it.
Coalescing binary systems are one of the most promising sources of gravitational waves. The technique of matched filtering used in the detection of gravitational waves from coalescing binaries relies on the construction of accurate templates. Until recently filters modelled on the quadrupole or the Newtonian approximation were deemed sufficient. Recently it was shown that post-Newtonian effects contribute to a secular growth in the phase difference between the actual signal and its corresponding Newtonian template. In this paper we investigate the possibility of compensating for the phase diff…
Coalescing compact binaries with neutron star or black hole components provide the most promising sources of gravitational radiation for detection by the LIGO/VIRGO/GEO/TAMA laser interferometers now under construction. This fact has motivated several different theoretical studies of the inspiral and hydrodynamic merging of compact binaries. Analytic analyses of the inspiral waveforms have been performed in the Post-Newtonian approximation. Analytic and numerical treatments of the coalescence waveforms from binary neutron stars have been performed using Newtonian hydrodynamics and the quadrupo…
It has long been known that gravitational waves from compact binary coalescing sources are responsible for a first-order displacement memory effect experienced by a pair of freely falling test masses. This constant displacement is sourced from the non-vanishing final gravitational-wave strain present in the wave's after-zone, often referred to as the non-linear memory effect, and is of the same order of magnitude as the strain from the outgoing quadrupole radiation. Hence, this prediction of general relativity is verifiable experimentally by measurement of the final relative separation between…
Extending a method developed by Sasaki in the Schwarzschild case and by Shibata, Sasaki, Tagoshi, and Tanaka in the Kerr case, we calculate the post-Newtonian expansion of the gravitational wave luminosities from a test particle in circular orbit around a rotating black hole up to $O(v^8)$ beyond the quadrupole formula. The orbit of a test particle is restricted on the equatorial plane. We find that spin dependent terms appear in each post-Newtonian order, and that at $O(v^6)$ they have a significant effect on the orbital phase evolution of coalescing compact binaries. By comparing the post-Ne…
We calculate the gravitational radiation produced by the merger and coalescence of inspiraling binary neutron stars using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. The stars are modeled as polytropes and start out in the point-mass limit at wide separation. The hydrodynamic integration is performed using smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) with Newtonian gravity, and the gravitational radiation is calculated using the quadrupole approximation. We have run several simulations, varying both the neutron star radius and the equation of state. The resulting gravitational wave energy spectra $dE/df$ are …
The construction of a massive (~ 40 ton) spherical antennas for gravitational wave astronomy has been proposed by a number of groups worldwide. Summed over all five quadrupole modes, the sphere has a direction-independent cross section, permitting full-sky coverage. Combined with its enhanced sensitivity due to its multi-nature and increased mass, sphereical detectors make ideal instruments for observational astronomy. Numerical calculations have shown that gravitational-wave signals from coalescing neutron star binaries and dynamic instabilities of rapidly rotating stars in the Virgo cluster …
Gravitational waves emitted by coalescing binary systems containing neutron stars (or other compact objects) carry signatures of the stars' internal equation of state, notably, through the influence of tidal deformations during the binary's inspiral stage. While the leading-order tidal effects for post-Newtonian binaries of compact bodies in general relativity are due to the bodies' mass-quadrupole moments induced by gravitoelectric tidal fields, we consider here the leading effects due to current-quadrupole moments induced by gravitomagnetic tidal fields. We employ an effective action approac…
Recently exploratory studies were performed on the possibility of constraining the neutron star equation of state (EOS) using signals from coalescing binary neutron stars, or neutron star-black hole systems, as they will be seen in upcoming advanced gravitational wave detectors such as Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. In particular, it was estimated to what extent the combined information from multiple detections would enable one to distinguish between different equations of state through hypothesis ranking or parameter estimation. Under the assumption of zero neutron star spins both in signa…
We present TEOBResumS, a new effective-one-body (EOB) waveform model for nonprecessing (spin-aligned) and tidally interacting compact binaries.Spin-orbit and spin-spin effects are blended together by making use of the concept of centrifugal EOB radius. The point-mass sector through merger and ringdown is informed by numerical relativity (NR) simulations of binary black holes (BBH) computed with the SpEC and BAM codes. An improved, NR-based phenomenological description of the postmerger waveform is developed. The tidal sector of TEOBResumS describes the dynamics of neutron star binaries up to me…
Using the (3+1) formalism in general relativity, we perform the post-Newtonian(PN) approximation to clarify what sort of gauge condition is suitable for numerical analysis of coalescing compact binary neutron stars and gravitational waves from them. We adopt a kind of transverse gauge condition to determine the shift vector. On the other hand, for determination of the time slice, we adopt three slice conditions(conformal slice, maximal slice and harmonic slice) and discuss their properties. Using these conditions, the PN hydrodynamic equations are obtained up through the 2.5PN order including …
In a recent letter [N. V. Krishnendu et al., PRL 119, 091101 (2017)] we explored the possibility of probing the binary black hole nature of coalescing compact binaries, by measuring their spin-induced multipole moments, observed in advanced LIGO detectors. Coefficients characterizing the spin-induced multipole moments of Kerr black holes are predicted by the "no-hair" conjecture and appear in the gravitational waveforms through quadratic and higher order spin interactions and hence can be directly measured from gravitational wave observations. We assess the capabilities of the third-generation…
Ground-based gravitational wave laser interferometers (LIGO, GEO-600, Virgo and Tama-300) have now reached high sensitivity and duty cycle. We present a Bayesian evidence-based approach to the search for gravitational waves, in particular aimed at the followup of candidate events generated by the analysis pipeline. We introduce and demonstrate an efficient method to compute the evidence and odds ratio between different models, and illustrate this approach using the specific case of the gravitational wave signal generated during the inspiral phase of binary systems, modelled at the leading quad…
Einstein's theory of general relativity predicts that the only stationary configuration of an isolated black hole is the Kerr spacetime, which has a unique multipolar structure and a spherical shape when non-spinning. This is in striking contrast to the case of other self-gravitating objects, which instead can in principle have arbitrary deformations even in the static case. Here we develop a general perturbative framework to construct stationary stars with small axisymmetric deformations, and study explicitly compact stars with an intrinsic quadrupole moment. The latter can be sustained, for …
Gravitational-wave astronomy with coalescing binary neutron star sources requires the availability of gravitational waveforms with tidal effects accurate up to merger. This article presents an improved version of \TEOBResum, a nonspinning effective-one-body (EOB) waveform model with enhanced analytical information in its tidal sector. The tidal potential governing the conservative dynamics employs resummed expressions based on post-Newtonian (PN) and gravitational self-force (GSF) information. In particular, we compute a GSF-resummed expression for the leading-order octupolar gravitoelectric t…
The higher-multipoles of gravitational wave signals from coalescing compact binaries play a vital role in the accurate reconstruction of source properties, bringing about a deeper and nuanced understanding of fundamental physics and astrophysics. Their effect is most pronounced in systems with asymmetric masses having an orbital geometry that is not face-on. The detection of higher-multipoles of GW signals from any single, isolated merger event is challenging, as there is much less power in comparison to the dominant quadrupole mode. In this paper, we present a new method for their detection b…
The nonlinear aspect of gravitational wave generation that produces power at harmonics of the orbital frequency, above the fundamental quadrupole frequency, is examined to see what information about the source is contained in these higher harmonics. We use an order (4/2) post-Newtonian expansion of the gravitational wave waveform of a binary system to model the signal seen in a spaceborne gravitational wave detector such as the proposed LISA detector. Covariance studies are then performed to determine the ultimate accuracy to be expected when the parameters of the source are fit to the receive…
The future space-based gravitational wave detector LISA will be able to measure parameters of coalescing massive black hole binaries, often to extremely high accuracy. Previous work has demonstrated that the black hole spins can have a strong impact on the accuracy of parameter measurement. Relativistic spin-induced precession modulates the waveform in a manner which can break degeneracies between parameters, in principle significantly improving how well they are measured. Recent studies have indicated, however, that spin precession may be weak for an important subset of astrophysical binary b…
We investigate the sensitivity of individual LIGO/VIRGO-like interferometers and the precision with which they can determine the characteristics of an inspiralling binary system. Since the two interferometers of the LIGO detector share nearly the same orientation, their joint sensitivity is similar to that of a single, more sensitive interferometer. We express our results for a single interferometer of both initial and advanced LIGO design, and also for the LIGO detector in the limit that its two interferometers share exactly the same orientation. We approximate the evolution of a binary syste…
Intermediate mass ratio inspiral (IMRI) binaries -- containing stellar-mass black holes coalescing into intermediate-mass black holes ($M>100M_{\odot}$) -- are a highly anticipated source of gravitational waves (GWs) for Advanced LIGO/Virgo. Their detection and source characterization would provide a unique probe of strong-field gravity and stellar evolution. Due to the asymmetric component masses and the large primary, these systems generically excite subdominant modes while reducing the importance of the dominant quadrupole mode. Including higher order harmonics can also result in a $10\%-25…
