Let $q$ be a prime power, let $\mathbb F_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements and let $d_1, \ldots, d_k$ be positive integers. In this note we explore the number of solutions $(z_1, \ldots, z_k)\in\overline{\mathbb F}_q^k$ of the equation \begin{equation*}L_1(x_1)+\cdots+L_k(x_k)=b,\end{equation*} with the restrictions $z_i\in \mathbb F_{q^{d_i}}$, where each $L_i(x)$ is a non zero polynomial of the form $\sum_{j=0}^{m_i}a_{ij}x^{q^j}\in \mathbb F_q[x]$ and $b\in \overline{\mathbb F}_q$. We characterize the elements $b$ for which the equation above has a solution and, in affirmative case, we determine the exact number of solutions. As an application of our main result, we obtain the cardinality of the sumset $$\sum_{i=1}^k\mathbb F_{q^{d_i}}:=\{α_1+\cdots+α_k\,|\, α_i\in \mathbb F_{q^{d_i}}\}.$$ Our approach also allows us to solve another interesting problem, regarding the existence and number of elements in $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ with prescribed traces over intermediate $\mathbb F_q$-extensions of $\mathbb F_{q^n}$.
We study the variance of the random variable that counts the number of lattice points in some shells generated by a special class of finite type domains in $\mathbb R^d$. The proof relies on estimates of the Fourier transform of indicator functions of convex domains.
We consider various counting questions for irreducible binomials over finite fields. We use various results from analytic number theory to investigate these questions.
Let F_q be the finite field of q elements. Let H be a multiplicative subgroup of F_q^*. For a positive integer k and element b\in F_q, we give a sharp estimate for the number of k-element subsets of H which sum to b.
It is a well known result that the number of points over a finite field on the Legendre family of elliptic curves can be written in terms of a hypergeometric function modulo $p$. In this paper, we extend this result, due to Igusa, to a family of monomial deformations of a diagonal hypersurface. We find explicit relationships between the number of points and generalized hypergeometric functions as well as their finite field analogues.
We consider natural polynomial truncations of hypergeometric power series defined over finite fields. For these truncations, we establish asymptotic upper bounds of order $O(p^{11/12})$ on the number of roots in the prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$. We discuss the correspondence to families of elliptic curves and K3 surfaces of certain such hypergeometric polynomials, for which sharp bounds are obtained in some cases. We include some computations to illustrate and supplement our results.
We study an asymptotic formula for counting integral points over an equation defined by a non-degenerated indefinite integral ternary quadratic form $f$ representing a non-zero integer $a$ such that $-a\cdot det(f)$ is square over a number field. In particular, we prove that the finite part of this asymptotic formula is given by the product of local density times $1-p^{-1}$ over all finite primes $p$ over $\Bbb Z$.
Let $V$ be a quasiprojective variety defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$, and let $ϕ:V\rightarrow V$ be an endomorphism of $V$ that is also defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Let $G$ be a finite subgroup of $\operatorname{Aut}_{\mathbb{F}_q}(V)$ with the property that $ϕ$ commutes with every element of $G$. We show that idempotent relations in the group ring $\mathbb{Q}[G]$ give relations between the periodic point counts for the maps induced by $ϕ$ on the quotients of $V$ by the various subgroups of $G$. We also show that if $G$ is abelian, periodic point counts for the endomorphism on $V/G$ induced by $ϕ$…
Let $S$ be a Shimura variety and let $h$ be a Weil height function on $S$. We conjecture that the heights of special points in $S$ are discriminant negligible. Assuming this conjecture to be true, we prove that the sizes of the Galois orbits of special points grow as a fixed power of their discriminant (an invariant we will define in the text). In the case of Shimura varieties of abelian type, the height bound holds by the recently proved averaged Colmez formula, and our theorem gives a new proof of Tsimerman's Galois lower bound in this case. The main novelty is that our approach avoids the u…
We obtain upper bounds on the number of finite sets $\mathcal S$ of primes below a given bound for which various $2$ variable $\mathcal S$-unit equations have a solution.
We continue our study on counting irreducible polynomials over a finite field with prescribed coefficients. We set up a general combinatorial framework using generating functions with coefficients from a group algebra which is generated by equivalent classes of polynomials with prescribed coefficients. Simplified expressions are derived for some special cases. Our results extend some earlier results.
We give two specializations of Krasner's mass formula. The first formula yields the number of extensions of a $\mathfrak{p}$-adic field with given, inertia degree, ramification index, discriminant, and ramification polygon. We then refine this formula further to the case where an additional invariant related to the residual polynomials of the segments of the ramification polygon is given.
We establish an error estimate for counting lattice points in Euclidean norm balls (associated to an arbitrary irreducible linear representation) for lattices in simple Lie groups of real rank at least two. Our approach utilizes refined spectral estimates based on the existence of universal pointwise bounds for spherical functions on the groups involved. We focus particularly on the case of the special linear groups where we give a detailed proof of error estimates which constitute the first improvement of the best current bound established by Duke, Rudnick and Sarnak in 1991, and are nearly t…
We give formulas for the number of polynomials over a finite field with given root multiplicities, in particular in cases when the formula is surprisingly simple (a power of q). Besides this concrete interpretation, we also prove an analogous result on configuration spaces in the Grothendieck ring of varieties, suggesting new homological stabilization conjectures for configuration spaces of the plane.
C. F. Gauss discovered a beautiful formula for the number of irreducible polynomials of a given degree over a finite field. Assuming just a few elementary facts in field theory and the exclusion-inclusion formula, we show how one see the shape of this formula and its proof instantly.
In an abelian group G, a more sums than differences (MSTD) set is a subset A of G such that |A+A|>|A-A|. We provide asymptotics for the number of MSTD sets in finite abelian groups, extending previous results of Nathanson. The proof contains an application of a recently resolved conjecture of Alon and Kahn on the number of independent sets in a regular graph.
In this paper we study the equidistribution of expanding horospheres in infinite volume geometrically finite rank one locally symmetric manifolds and apply it to the orbital counting problem in apollonian sphere packing.
For a given conic bundle X over a curve C defined over F_q, we count irreducible branch covers of C in X of degree d and height e>>1. As a special case, we get the number of algebraic numbers of degree d and height e over the function field F_q (C).
We present a deterministic polynomial time algorithm for computing the zeta function of an arbitrary variety of fixed dimension over a finite field of small characteristic. One consequence of this result is an efficient method for computing the order of the group of rational points on the Jacobian of a smooth geometrically connected projective curve over a finite field of small characteristic.
We count subrings of small index of $\mathbb{Z}^n$, where the addition and multiplication are defined componentwise. Let $f_n(k)$ denote the number of subrings of index $k$. For any $n$, we give a formula for this quantity for all integers $k$ that are not divisible by a 9th power of a prime, extending a result of Liu.
We say that a set $S$ is additively decomposed into two sets $A$ and $B$ if $S = \{a+b : a\in A, \ b \in B\}$. A. Sárközy has recently conjectured that the set $Q$ of quadratic residues modulo a prime $p$ does not have nontrivial decompositions. Although various partial results towards this conjecture have been obtained, it is still open. Here we obtain a nontrivial upper bound on the number of such decompositions.
We study the connection between the singularities of a finite type $\mathbb{Z}$-scheme X and the asymptotic point count of X over various finite rings. In particular, if the generic fiber $X_{\mathbb{Q}}=X\times_{\mathrm{Spec}\mathbb{Z}}\mathrm{Spec}\mathbb{Q}$ is a local complete intersection, we show that the boundedness of $\frac{\left|X(\mathbb{Z}/p^{n}\mathbb{Z})\right|}{p^{n\mathrm{dim}X_{\mathbb{Q}}}}$ in p and n is in fact equivalent to the condition that $X_{\mathbb{Q}}$ is reduced and has rational singularities. This paper completes a result of Aizenbud and Avni.
We relate the singularities of a scheme $X$ to the asymptotics of the number of points of $X$ over finite rings. This gives a partial answer to a question of Mustata. We use this result to count representations of arithmetic lattices. More precisely, if $Γ$ is an arithmetic lattice whose $\mathbb{Q}$-rank is greater than one, let $r_n(Γ)$ be the number of irreducible $n$-dimensional representations of $Γ$ up to isomorphism. We prove that there is a constant $C$ (for example, $C=746$ suffices) such that $r_n(Γ)=O(n^C)$ for every such $Γ$. This answers a question of Larsen and Lubotzky.
We study the problem of lifting curves from finite fields to number fields in a genus and gonality preserving way. More precisely, we sketch how this can be done efficiently for curves of gonality at most four, with an in-depth treatment of curves of genus at most five over finite fields of odd characteristic, including an implementation in Magma. We then use such a lift as input to an algorithm due to the second author for computing zeta functions of curves over finite fields using $p$-adic cohomology.
The special uniformity of zeta functions claims that pure non-abelian zeta functions coincide with group zeta functions associated to the special linear groups. Naturally associated are three aspects, namely, the analytic, arithmetic, and geometric aspects. In the first paper of this series, we expose intrinsic geometric structures of our zetas by counting semi-stable bundles on curves defined over finite fields in terms of their automorphism groups and global sections. We show that such a counting maybe read from Artin zetas which are abelian in nature. This paper also contains an appendix wr…
We generalize Elkies's method, an essential ingredient in the SEA algorithm to count points on elliptic curves over finite fields of large characteristic, to the setting of p.p. abelian surfaces. Under reasonable assumptions related to the distribution of Elkies primes, we obtain improvements over Schoof's method in two cases. If the abelian surface A over Fq has RM by a fixed quadratic field F, we reach the same asymptotic complexity Otilde(log4 q) as the SEA algorithm up to constant factors depending on F. If A is defined over a number field, we count points on A modulo sufficiently many pri…
Let $\mathbb F_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements and, for each positive integer $n$, let $A_q(n)$ be the number of non isomorphic functional graphs arising from $\mathbb F_q$-linear maps $T:\mathbb F_{q}^n\to \mathbb F_{q}^n$. In 2013, Bach and Bridy proved that, if $q$ is fixed and $n$ is sufficiently large, the quantity $\frac{\log \log A_q(n)}{\log n}$ lies in the interval $[\frac{1}{2}, 1]$. By combining some ideas from linear algebra, combinatorics and number theory, in this paper we provide sharper estimates on the function $A_q(n)$ and, in particular, we prove that $\lim\limits_{…
Using the Riemann Hypothesis over finite fields and bounds for the size of spherical codes, we give explicit upper bounds, of polynomial size with respect to the size of the field, for the number of geometric isomorphism classes of geometrically irreducible ell-adic middle-extension sheaves on a curve over a finite field which are pointwise pure of weight 0 and have bounded ramification and rank. As an application, we show that "random" functions defined on a finite field can not usually be approximated by short linear combinations of trace functions of sheaves with small complexity.
In this paper, we reformulate conjectural formulas for the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Shimura varieties with minuscule parahoric level structure in terms of weighted counting of lattices containing special homomorphisms.
A packing of subsets $\mathcal S_1,..., \mathcal S_n$ in a group $G$ is a sequence $(g_1,...,g_n)$ such that $g_1\mathcal S_1,...,g_n\mathcal S_n$ are disjoint subsets of $G$. We give a formula for the number of packings if the group $G$ is finite and if the subsets $\mathcal S_1,...,\mathcal S_n$ satisfy a genericity condition. This formula can be seen as a generalization of the falling factorials which encode the number of packings in the case where all the sets $\mathcal S_i$ are singletons.
This note concerns the theoretical algorithmic problem of counting rational points on curves over finite fields. It explicates how the algorithmic scheme introduced by Schoof and generalized by the author yields an algorithm whose running time is uniformly polynomial time for curves in families.
We count the number of isomorphism classes of degree $d$-twists of some polarized abelian varieties over finite fields of odd prime dimension. This can be seen as a higher dimensional analogue of the counting problem for elliptic curves case.
For a geometrically finite group Gamma of G=SO(n,1), we survey recent developments on counting and equidistribution problems for orbits of Gamma in a homogeneous space H\G where H is trivial, symmetric or horospherical. Main applications are found in an affine sieve on orbits of thin groups as well as in sphere counting problems for sphere packings invariant under a geometrically finite group. In our sphere counting problems, spheres can be ordered with respect to a general conformal metric.
We give an efficient algorithm to enumerate all sets of $r\ge 1$ quadratic polynomials over a finite field, which remain irreducible under iterations and compositions.
The counting function on the natural numbers defines a discrete Morse-Smale complex with a cohomology for which topological quantities like Morse indices, Betti numbers or counting functions for critical points of Morse index are explicitly given in number theoretical terms. The Euler characteristic of the Morse filtration is related to the Mertens function, the Poincaré-Hopf indices at critical points correspond to the values of the Moebius function. The Morse inequalities link number theoretical quantities like the prime counting functions relevant for the distribution of primes with cohomol…
