Using a month-long X-ray lightcurve from ${\it RXTE}$/PCA and 1.5 month long UV continuum lightcurves from ${\it IUE}$ spectra in 1220$-$1970 $Å$, we performed a detailed time-lag study of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469. Our cross-correlation analysis confirms previous results showing that the X-rays are delayed relative to the UV continuum at 1315 $Å$ by 3.49 $\pm$ 0.22 days which is possibly caused by either propagating fluctuation or variable comptonisation. However, if variations slower than 5 days are removed from the X-ray lightcurve, the UV variations then lag behind the X-rays variations by 0.37$\pm$0.14 day, consistent with reprocessing of the X-rays by a surrounding accretion disc. A very similar reverberation delay is observed between ${\it Swift}$/XRT X-ray and ${\it Swift}$/UVOT UVW2, U lightcurves. Continuum lightcurves extracted from the ${\it Swift}$/GRISM spectra show delays with respect to X-rays consistent with reverberation. Separating the UV continuum variations faster and slower than 5 days, the slow variations at 1825 $Å$ lag those at 1315 $Å$ by $0.29\pm0.06$ day, while the fast variations are coincident ($0.04\pm0.12$ day). The UV/optical continuum reverberation lag from ${\it IUE}$, ${\it Swift}$ and other optical telescopes at different wavelengths are consistent with the relationship: $τ\propto λ^{4/3}$, predicted for the standard accretion disc theory while the best-fit X-ray delay from ${\it RXTE}$ and ${\it Swift}$/XRT shows a negative X-ray offset of $\sim$0.38 days from the standard disc delay prediction.
The origin of narrow line region (NLR) outflows remains unknown. In this paper, we explore the scenario in which these outflows are circumnuclear clouds driven by energetic accretion disk winds. We choose the well-studied nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 as an example. By performing 3D hydrodynamical simulations, we are able to reproduce the radial distributions of velocity, mass outflow rate and kinetic luminosity of NLR outflows in the inner 100 pc deduced from spatial resolved spectroscopic observations. The demanded kinetic luminosity of disk winds is about two orders of magnitude higher tha…
We report B, V, and R band CCD photometry of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 obtained with the 1.0-m telescope at Weihai Observatory of Shandong University and the 1.56-m telescope at Shanghai Astronomical Observatory from 2005 December to 2013 February. Combining all available data from literature, we have constructed a historical light curve from 1910 to 2013 to study the periodicity of the source using three different methods (the Jurkevich method, the Lomb-Scargle periodogram method and the Discrete Correlation Function method). We find possible periods of P_1=4\pm0.1, P_2=7.5\pm0.3 and P_3=15…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations at $\approx100$ GHz with $0.05$ arcsec (3 pc) resolution of the kiloparsec-scale jet seen in the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068, and we report the presence of parsec-scale blobs at the head of the jet. The combination of the detected radio flux ($\approx0.8$ mJy), spectral index ($\approx0.5$), and the blob size ($\approx10$ pc) suggests a strong magnetic field of $B\approx240\,μ$G. Such a strong magnetic field most likely implies magnetic field amplification by streaming cosmic rays. The estimated cosmic-ray power by the jet…
We have mapped the extended narrow line region (ENLR) of NGC 3393 on scales of $r\lesssim4^{\prime\prime}$ ($\sim1\,$kpc) from the nucleus using emission line images of H$α\,\lambda6563$, [O III]$\lambda5007$, and [S II]$λ\lambda6717,6731$ taken with HST as part of the CHandra survey of Extended Emission line Regions in nearby Seyfert galaxies (CHEERS). By mapping these lines onto a spatially resolved Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich (BPT) diagram, we investigate the impact of feedback from a Compton-thick AGN on its circumnuclear ISM. We find the expected Seyfert-like emission within the ionization…
We present results of a long-term optical, UV and X-ray study of variability of the nearby changing-look (CL) Seyfert NGC 1566 which was observed with the Swift Observatory from 2007 to 2020. We summarize our previously published spectroscopic and photometric results and present new observations. We reported on the alteration in the spectral type of NGC 1566 in 2018 (REF1). Moreover, we focused on the exceptional postmaximum behavior after 2018 July, when all bands dropped with some fluctuations (REF2). We observed four significant re-brightenings in the post-maximum period. We have found diff…
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are powered by accreting supermassive black holes, surrounded by a torus of obscuring material. Recent studies have shown how the torus structure, formerly thought to be homogeneous, appears to be 'patchy': the detection of variability in the line-of-sight hydrogen column density, in fact, matches the description of an obscurer with a complex structure made of clouds with different column density. In this work, we perform a multi-epoch analysis of the X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7479 in order to estimate its torus properties, such as the average colum…
The shape of the ambient circumnuclear medium (ACM) density profile can probe the history of accretion onto the central supermassive black hole in galaxies and the circumnuclear environment. However, due to the limitation of the instrument resolution, the density profiles of the ACM for most of galaxies remain largely unknown. In this work, we propose a novel method to measure the ACM density profile of active galactic nucleus (AGN) by the equilibrium between the radiation pressure on the warm absorbers (WAs, a type of AGN outflows) and the drag pressure from the ACM. We study the correlation …
We report on the unveiling of the nature of the unidentified X-ray source 3XMM J005450.3-373849 as a Seyfert-2 galaxy located behind the spiral galaxy NGC 300 using Hubble Space Telescope data, new spectroscopic Gemini observations and available XMM-Newton and Chandra data. We show that the X-ray source is positionally coincident with an extended optical source, composed by a marginally resolved nucleus/bulge, surrounded by an elliptical disc-like feature and two symmetrical outer rings. The optical spectrum is typical of a Seyfert-2 galaxy redshifted to z=0.222 +/- 0.001, which confirms that …
We present optical photometric observations of SN 2018aoq from 2 to 100 days after explosion, and 7 spectra at epochs from 11 to 71 days. The light curves and spectra are typical for SNe II-P. As previously reported, SN 2018aoq appears to be of intermediate brightness between subluminous and normal SNe II-P. SN 2018aoq was discovered in Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, for which the distance is uncertain. We utilised the Expanding Photosphere Method using three sets of filter combinations and velocities derived from the absorption minima of FeII lines and obtained a distance of 20.0 +-1.6 Mpc. The Sta…

We present the analysis of three XMM observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7590. The source was found to have no X-ray absorption in the low spatial resolution ASCA data. The XMM observations provide a factor of 10 better spatial resolution than previous ASCA data. We find that the X-ray emission of NGC 7590 is dominated by an off-nuclear ULX and extended emission from the host galaxy. The nuclear X-ray emission is rather weak comparing with the host galaxy. Based on its very low X-ray luminosity as well as the small ratio between the 2-10 keV and the [O III] fluxes, we interpret NGC 7590 a…
We discuss preliminary results from a joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR monitoring program on the active galactic nucleus NGC 4593, consisting of 5x20 ks observations, spaced by two days, performed in January 2015. The source is found to be variable, both in flux and spectral shape, on time scales as short as a few ks. The spectrum clearly softens when the source brightens. A simple timing analysis suggests the presence of a variable soft excess that correlates with the primary continuum.
We present the variability analysis of a 100 ks XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1.5 active galaxy NGC 3227. The observation found NGC 3227 in a period where its hard power-law component displayed remarkably little long-term variability. This lucky event allows us to observe clearly a soft spectral component undergoing a large-amplitude but slow flux variation. Using combined spectral and timing analysis we isolate two independent variable continuum components and characterize their behavior as a function of timescale. Rapid and coherent variations throughout the 0.2-10 keV band reveal a …
The Fermi/LAT collaboration recently reported the detection of starburt galaxies in the high energy gamma-ray domain, as well as radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 objects, which were previously unusual extragalactic suspects for high energy emission. Motivated by the presence of sources close to the location of composite starburst/Seyfert 2 galaxies in the first year Fermi/LAT catalogue, we studied high energy gamma-ray emission from such objects, aiming at disentangling the emission of starburst and Seyfert activity. We analysed 1.6 years of Fermi/LAT data from NGC 1068 and NGC 4945, which cou…
Probing the physics of the accretion flow around active galactic nuclei (AGN) is crucial to understanding their emission mechanisms as well as being able to constrain the geometrical and variability properties of the different regions around them. The soft X-ray excess -- usually observed below $\sim2\,\mathrm{keV}$ in excess of the dominant X-ray powerlaw continuum -- is one prominent feature that is commonly seen in type 1 Seyfert AGN and therefore readily provides a useful diagnostic of the accretion flow mechanism around these systems. NGC 5940 is a Seyfert 1 AGN which reveals strong, prom…
NGC 5033 is an intriguing Seyfert galaxy because its sub-classification may change with time, and because optical and sub-mm observations find that the massive black hole does not sit at the dynamical center of the galaxy, pointing to a past merger. We obtained a new optical spectrum of NGC 5033 using the 200'' Hale telescope at Palomar that clearly reveals a broad H$β$ line (FWHM$=5400\pm 300~{\rm km}~{\rm s}^{-1}$). This signals a clear view of the optical broad line region (BLR) and requires Seyfert-1.5 designation. Some spectra obtained in the past suggest a Seyfert-1.9 classification, pot…
Recent radio VLBI observations of the ~parsec-scale nuclear region of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 hint toward the presence of outflowing plasma. From available literature we have collected high-quality, high-resolution broadband spectral energy distribution data of the nuclear region of NGC 4051 spanning from radio through X-rays, to test whether the broadband SED can be explained within the framework of a relativistically outflowing jet model. We show that once the contribution from the host galaxy is taken into account, the broadband emission from the active galactic nucleus of…

We study accretion disk-corona connection in Seyfert 1 galaxies using simultaneous UV/X-ray observations of NGC 4593 (July 14-18, 2016) and NGC 7469 (October 15-19, 2017) performed with AstroSat. We use the X-ray (0.5-7.0 keV) data acquired with the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and the UV (FUV: 130-180 nm, NUV: 200-300 nm) data obtained with the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). We also use the contemporaneous Swift observations of NGC 4593 and demonstrate AstroSat's capability for X-ray/UV correlation studies. We performed UV/X-ray cross-correlation analysis using the Interpolated and the …
We present analysis of NuSTAR X-ray observations in the 3-79 keV energy band of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388, taken in 2013. The broadband sensitivity of NuSTAR, covering the Fe K$α$ line and Compton reflection hump, enables tight constraints to be placed on reflection features in AGN X-ray spectra, thereby providing insight into the geometry of the circumnuclear material. In this observation, we found the X-ray spectrum of NGC 4388 to be well described by a moderately absorbed power law with non-relativistic reflection. We fit the spectrum with phenomenological reflection models and a physic…
An enigmatic group of objects, unabsorbed Seyfert 2s may have intrinsically weak broad line regions, obscuration in the line of sight to the BLR but not to the X-ray corona, or so much obscuration that the X-ray continuum is completely suppressed and the observed spectrum is actually scattered into the line of sight from nearby material. NGC 3660 has been shown to have weak broad optical/near infrared lines, no obscuration in the soft X-ray band, and no indication of "changing look" behavior. The only previous hard X-ray detection of this source by Beppo-SAX seemed to indicate that the source …
An extended XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert I galaxy NGC 4051 in 2009 revealed a complex absorption spectrum, with a wide range of outflow velocities and ionisation states. The main velocity and ionisation structure was interpreted in Paper I in terms of a decelerating, recombining flow resulting from the shocking of a still higher velocity wind colliding with the ISM or slower moving ejecta. The high sensitivity of the XMM-Newton observation also revealed a number of broad emission lines, all showing evidence of self-absorption near the line cores. The line profiles are found here to be …
We present results from a ~55 ks long XMM-Newton observation of the obscured AGN, NGC 5643, performed in July 2009. A previous, shorter (about 10 ks) XMM-Newton observation in February 2003 had left two major issues open, the nature of the hard X-ray emission (Compton-thin vs Compton-thick) and of the soft X-ray excess (photoionized vs collisionally ionized matter). The new observation shows that the source is Compton-thick and that the dominant contribution to the soft X-ray emission is by photoionized matter (even if it is still unclear whether collisionally ionized matter may contribute as …
Simultaneous observations of X-rays and radio luminosities have been well studied in accreting stellar-mass black holes. These observations are performed in order to understand how mass accretion rates and jetted outflows are linked in these individual systems. Such contemporaneous studies in supermassive black holes (SMBH) are harder to perform, as viscous times scale linearly with mass. However, as NGC 4395 is the lowest known mass Seyfert galaxy, we have used it to examine the simultaneous X-ray (Swift) and radio (VLA) correlation in a SMBH in a reasonably timed observing campaign. We find …
We have performed systematic studies of narrow Fe-K line (6.4 keV) flux variability and Ni-K line intensity for Seyfert galaxies, using {\em Suzaku} and {\em XMM-Newton} archival data. Significant Fe-K line variability of several tens percents was detected for a pair of observations separated by 1000--2000 days (Cen A, IC 4329 A, NGC 3516, and NGC 4151) and 158 days (NGC 3516). These timescales are larger by a factor of 10--100 than the inner radius of torus, consistent with the view that X-ray reflection by torus is a main origin of a narrow Fe-K line. Ni-K line was detected with $>2σ$ level …
We present the first unambiguous evidence of a broad (Gaussian width ~330 eV) component of the iron K-alpha fluorescent emission line in the X-ray obscured Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC5506. This is the main results of a spectroscopic monitoring campaign on this source performed with the XMM-Newton observatory between February 2001 and January 2009. The broad line lacks extreme redwards skewness. If modelled with a relativistic component, the profile of the line is consistent with a flat emissivity radial dependence (alpha~1.9). The disk inclination (~40 degrees) is nominally larger then ty…
We present NuSTAR observations of the bright Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 obtained in 2012, when the source was at the highest flux level ever observed, and in 2013, when the source was at a more typical flux level. We include archival observations from other X-ray satellites, namely XMM-Newton, Suzaku, BeppoSAX, Chandra and Swift. Simultaneous NuSTAR and Swift broad band spectra (in the 3-80 keV range) indicate a cutoff energy $E_{\rm c}>210$ keV, with no detectable contribution from Compton reflection. NGC 2110 is one of the very few sources where no evidence for distant Compton thick scatterin…
We present an analysis of the time-averaged spectrum of the Seyfert-2 active galaxy NGC 4388, obtained by NICER. The intrinsic strength of the reflection spectrum in NGC 4388, the large collecting area and favorable pass band of NICER, and a net exposure of 105.6 ks yielded an exceptionally sensitive spectrum. Using two independent families of models, the intrinsic spectrum from the central engine is found to be highly obscured but not Compton-thick. Enforcing physical self-consistency within each model, the independent treatments give formally consistent results: N_H = 2.67 (-0.03,+0.02) E+23…
We present the result of the Chandra high-resolution observation of the Seyfert~2 galaxy NGC 7590. This object was reported to show no X-ray absorption in the low-spatial resolution ASCA data. The XMM observations show that the X-ray emission of NGC 7590 is dominated by an off-nuclear ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) and an extended emission from the host galaxy, and the nucleus is rather weak, likely hosting a Compton-thick AGN. Our recent Chandra observation of NGC 7590 enables to remove the X-ray contamination from the ULX and the extended component effectively. The nuclear source remains …
The AGN NGC 2110 presents a peculiar case among the Seyfert 2 galaxies, as it displays also features of radio-loud objects and is classified as FR-I radio galaxy. Here we analyse simultaneous INTEGRAL and Swift data taken in 2008 and 2009. We reconstruct the spectral energy distribution in order to provide further insight. The combined X-ray spectrum is well represented by an absorbed cut-off power law model plus soft excess. Combining all available data, the spectrum appears flat (photon index 1.25 +- 0.04) with the high-energy cut-off being at 82 +- 9 keV. The intrinsic absorption is moderat…
We present the 0.5 - 50 keV Suzaku broad-band X-ray spectral study of the Compton-thick AGN in NGC 5135. The Suzaku observation provides the first detection of NGC 5135 above 10 keV that allowed us, for the first time, to estimate the absorbing column density, the intrinsic X-ray luminosity, the strength of the reflection component and the viewing angle of the torus for this AGN. The 0.5 - 10 keV spectrum of NGC 5135 is characterized by the standard components for a Compton-thick source: a scattered continuum, a prominent Fe Kα emission line (EW ~ 2.1 keV) and a soft excess. At higher energies…
We investigate the energy-time lag dependence of the source NGC 4593 using XMM-{\it Newton}/EPIC-pn data. We found that the time lag dependency is linear in nature with respect to the logarithm of different energy bands. We also investigate the frequency dependent time lags and identify that at some frequency range (5 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ Hz -- 2 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ Hz) the X-ray emission is highly coherent, mildly frequency dependent and very strongly energy dependent. These observations can be explained in the frame work of the thermal Comptonization process and they indicate a truncated accret…
