Variable Length Memory Chains (VLMC), which are generalizations of finite order Markov chains, turn out to be an essential tool to modelize random sequences in many domains, as well as an interesting object in contemporary probability theory. The question of the existence of stationary probability measures leads us to introduce a key combinatorial structure for words produced by a VLMC: the Longest Internal Suffix. This notion allows us to state a necessary and sufficient condition for a general VLMC to admit a unique invariant probability measure. This condition turns out to get a much simpler form for a subclass of VLMC: the stable VLMC. This natural subclass, unlike the general case, enjoys a renewal property. Namely, a stable VLMC induces a semi-Markov chain on an at most countable state space. Unfortunately, this discrete time renewal process does not contain the whole information of the VLMC, preventing the study of a stable VLMC to be reduced to the study of its induced semi-Markov chain. For a subclass of stable VLMC, the convergence in distribution of a VLMC towards its stationary probability measure is established. Finally, finite state space semi-Markov chains turn out to be very special stable VLMC, shedding some new light on their limit distributions.
We consider the higher-order Markov Chain, and characterize the second order Markov chains admitting every probability distribution vector as a stationary vector. The result is used to construct Markov chains of higher-order with the same property. We also study conditions under which the set of stationary vectors of the Markov chain has a certain affine dimension.
We construct strong stationary dual chains for Ising model on a circle, non-symmetric random walk on square lattice and a random walk on hypercube. The strong stationary dual chains are all sharp and have the same state space as original chains. We use Möbius monotonicity of these chains with respect to natural orderings of the corresponding state spaces. This method provides an easy way to find eigenvalues in the Ising model and for a random walk on hypercube. Keywords: Markov chains; stochastic monotonicity; eigenvalues; Möbius monotonicity; strong stationary duality; strong stationary times…
In this paper we consider stationary Markov chains with trivial two-sided tail sigma field, and prove that additive functionals satisfy the central limit theorem provided the variance of partial sums divided by n is bounded.
For Markov chains with a partially ordered finite state space we show strong stationary duality under the condition of Möbius monotonicity of the chain. We show relations of Möbius monotonicity to other definitions of monotone chains. We give examples of dual chains in this context which have transitions only upwards. We illustrate general theory by an analysis of nonsymmetric random walks on the cube with an application to networks of queues.
We analyze a jump processes $Z$ with a jump measure determined by a "memory" process $S$. The state space of $(Z,S)$ is the Cartesian product of the unit circle and the real line. We prove that the stationary distribution of $(Z,S)$ is the product of the uniform probability measure and a Gaussian distribution.
By introducing a key combinatorial structure for words produced by a Variable Length Markov Chain (VLMC), the longest internal suffix, precise characterizations of existence and uniqueness of a stationary probability measure for a VLMC chain are given. These characterizations turn into necessary and sufficient conditions for VLMC associated to a subclass of probabilised context trees: the shift-stable context trees. As a by-product, we prove that a VLMC chain whose stabilized context tree is again a context tree has at most one stationary probability measure.
In a previous paper we determined one dimensional distributions of a stationary field with linear regressions and quadratic conditional variances under a linear constraint on the coefficients of the quadratic expression. In this paper we show that for stationary Markov chains with linear regressions and quadratic conditional variances the coefficients of the quadratic expression are indeed tied by a linear constraint which can take only one of the two alternative forms.
We study the partial maxima of stationary α-stable processes. We relate their asymptotic behavior to the ergodic theoretical properties of the flow. We observe a sharp change in the asymptotic behavior of the sequence of partial maxima as flow changes from being dissipative to being conservative, and argue that this may indicate a change from a short memory process to a long memory process.
An algorithm for estimating quasi-stationary distribution of finite state space Markov chains has been proven in a previous paper. Now this paper proves a similar algorithm that works for general state space Markov chains under very general assumptions.
It has been well known for some time that for strictly stationary Markov chains that are ``reversible'', that special symmetry provides special extra features in the mathematical theory. This paper here is primarily a purely expository review of some of the basic features of that special theory. The mathematical techniques employed in this review are relatively gentle, involving only some basic measure-theoretic probability theory.
For downward skip-free continuous-time Markov chains on non-negative integers stopped at zero, existence of a quasi-stationary distribution is studied. The scale function for these processes is introduced and the boundary is classified by a certain integrability condition on the scale function, which gives an extension of Feller's classification of the boundary for birth-and-death processes. The existence and the set of quasi-stationary distributions are characterized by the scale function and the new classification of the boundary.
We derive a functional limit theorem for the partial maxima process based on a long memory stationary $α$-stable process. The length of memory in the stable process is parameterized by a certain ergodic-theoretical parameter in an integral representation of the process. The limiting process is no longer a classical extremal Fréchet process. It is a self-similar process with $α$-Fréchet marginals, and it has stationary max-increments, a property which we introduce in this paper. The functional limit theorem is established in the space $D[0,\infty)$ equipped with the Skorohod $M_1$-topology; in …
A class of examples is constructed to show that for strictly stationary Markov chains that are reversible, the simultaneous mixing rates for the $ρ$-mixing and strong mixing ($α$-mixing) conditions can be fairly arbitrary, within certain unavoidable tight restrictions. The examples constructed here have the added property that the mixing rate for the absolute regularity ($β$-mixing) condition is within a constant factor of that for strong mixing.
We consider a Markov chain on $R^+$ with asymptotically zero drift and finite second moments of jumps which is positive recurrent. A power-like asymptotic behaviour of the invariant tail distribution is proven; such a heavy-tailed invariant measure happens even if the jumps of the chain are bounded. Our analysis is based on test functions technique and on construction of a harmonic function.
In this paper we give sufficient conditions for the almost sure central limit theorem started at a point, known under the name of quenched central limit theorem. This is achieved by using a new idea of conditioning with respect to both the past and the future of the Markov chain. As applications we provide a new sufficient projective conditions for the quenched CLT.
In this paper, we consider stationarity of a class of second-order stochastic evolution equations with memory, driven by Wiener processes or Levy jump processes, in Hilbert spaces. The strategy is to formulate by reduction some first-order systems in connection with the stochastic equations under investigation. We develop asymptotic behavior of dissipative second-order equations and then apply them to time delay systems through Gearhart-Pruss-Greiner's theorem. The stationary distribution of the system under consideration is the projection on the first coordinate of the corresponding stationar…
We consider a random walk on a discrete connected graph having some infinite branches plus finitely many vertices with finite degrees. We find the generator of a strong stationary dual in the sense of Fill, and use it to find some equivalent condition to the existence of a strong stationary time. This strong stationary dual process lies in the set of connected compact sets of the compactification of the graph. When this graph is Z, this is simply the set of (possibly infinite) segments of Z.
Consider a discrete time, ergodic Markov chain with finite state space which is started from stationarity. Fill and Lyzinski (2014) showed that, in some cases, the hitting time for a given state may be represented as a sum of a geometric number of IID random variables. We extend this result by giving explicit bounds on the distance between any such hitting time and an appropriately chosen geometric sum, along with other related approximations. The compounding random variable in our approximating geometric sum is a strong stationary time for the underlying Markov chain; we also discuss the appr…
We present a general functional central limit theorem started at a point also known under the name of quenched. As a consequence, we point out several new classes of stationary processes, defined via projection conditions, which satisfy this type of asymptotic result. One of the theorems shows that if a Markov chain is stationary ergodic and reversible, this result holds for bounded additive functionals of the chain which have a martingale coboundary in L_1 representation. Our results are also well adapted for strongly mixing sequences providing for this case an alternative, shorter approach t…
We compute the stationary distribution of a continuous-time Markov chain which is constructed by gluing together two finite, irreducible Markov chains by identifying a pair of states of one chain with a pair of states of the other and keeping all transition rates from either chain (the rates between the two shared states are summed). The result expresses the stationary distribution of the glued chain in terms of quantities of the two original chains. Some of the required terms are nonstandard but can be computed by solving systems of linear equations using the transition rate matrices of the t…
We consider a simple but important class of metastable discrete time Markov chains, which we call perturbed Markov chains. Basically, we assume that the transition matrices depend on a parameter $\varepsilon$, and converge as $\varepsilon$. We further assume that the chain is irreducible for $\varepsilon$ but may have several essential communicating classes when $\varepsilon$. This leads to metastable behavior, possibly on multiple time scales. For each of the relevant time scales, we derive two effective chains. The first one describes the (possibly irreversible) metastable dynamics, while th…
We consider a class of discrete time Markov chains with state space [0,1] and the following dynamics. At each time step, first the direction of the next transition is chosen at random with probability depending on the current location. Then the length of the jump is chosen independently as a random proportion of the distance to the respective end point of the unit interval, the distributions of the proportions being fixed for each of the two directions. Chains of that kind were subjects of a number of studies and are of interest for some applications. Under simple broad conditions, we establis…
This paper is concerned with the development of rigorous approximations to various expectations associated with Markov chains and processes having non-stationary transition probabilities. Such non-stationary models arise naturally in contexts in which time-of-day effects or seasonality effects need to be incorporated. Our approximations are valid asymptotically in regimes in which the transition probabilities change slowly over time. Specifically, we develop approximations for the expected infinite horizon discounted reward, the expected reward to the hitting time of a set, the expected reward…
This article describes an accurate procedure for computing the mean first passage times of a finite irreducible Markov chain and a Markov renewal process. The method is a refinement to the Kohlas, Zeit fur Oper Res, 30,197-207, (1986) procedure. The technique is numerically stable in that it doesn't involve subtractions. Algebraic expressions for the special cases of one, two, three and four states are derived. A consequence of the procedure is that the stationary distribution of the embedded Markov chain does not need to be derived in advance but can be found accurately from the derived mean …
We consider a strictly substochastic matrix or an stochastic matrix with absorbing states. By using quasi-stationary distributions one shows there is a canonical associated stationary Markov chain. Based upon $2-$stringing representation of the resurrected chain we supply a stationary representation of the killed and the absorbed chains. The entropies of these representations has a clear meaning when one identifies the probability measure of natural factors. The balance between the entropies of these representations and the canonical chain, serves to check the suitability of the whole construc…
In an influential paper, Courtois and Semal (1984) establish that when $G$ is an irreducible substochastic matrix for which $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}G^n <\infty$, then the stationary distribution of any stochastic matrix $P\ge G$ can be expressed as a convex combination of the normalized rows of $(I-G)^{-1} = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} G^n$. In this note, we give a short proof of this result that extends the theory to the countably infinite and continuous state space settings. This result plays an important role in obtaining error bounds in algorithms involving nearly decomposable Markov chains, and also …
In this paper, we are interested in investigating the perturbation bounds for the stationary distributions for discrete-time or continuous-time Markov chains on a countable state space. For discrete-time Markov chains, two new norm-wise bounds are obtained. The first bound is rather easy to be obtained since the needed condition, equivalent to uniform ergodicity, is imposed on the transition matrix directly. The second bound, which holds for a general (possibly periodic) Markov chain, involves finding a drift function. This drift function is closely related with the mean first hitting times. S…
This paper considers the subexponential asymptotics of the stationary distributions of GI/G/1-type Markov chains in two cases: (i) the phase transition matrix in non-boundary levels is stochastic; and (ii) it is strictly substochastic. For the case (i), we present a weaker sufficient condition for the sub exponential asymptotics than those given in the literature. As for the case (ii), the subexponential asymptotics has not been studied, as far as we know. We show that the subexponential asymptotics in the case (ii) is different from that in the case (i). We also study the locally subexponenti…
This paper proposes a new algorithm for computing the stationary distribution vector in continuous-time upper block-Hessenberg Markov chains. To this end, we consider the last-block-column-linearly-augmented (LBCL-augmented) truncation of the (infinitesimal) generator of the upper block-Hessenberg Markov chain. The LBCL-augmented truncation is a linearly-augmented truncation such that the augmentation distribution has its probability mass only on the last block column. We first derive an upper bound for the total variation distance between the respective stationary distribution vectors of the …
This paper studies the light-tailed asymptotics of the stationary tail probability vectors of a Markov chain of M/G/1 type. Almost all related studies have focused on the typical case, where the transition block matrices in the non-boundary levels have a dominant impact on the decay rate of the stationary tail probability vectors and their decay is aperiodic. In this paper, we study not only the typical case but also atypical cases such that the stationary tail probability vectors decay periodically and/or their decay rate is determined by the tail distribution of jump sizes from the boundary …
We show how to construct a topological Markov map of the interval whose invariant probability measure is the stationary law of a given stochastic chain of infinite order. In particular we caracterize the maps corresponding to stochastic chains with memory of variable length. The problem treated here is the converse of the classical construction of the Gibbs formalism for Markov expanding maps of the interval.
Here we obtain the exact asymptotics for large and moderate deviations, strong law of large numbers and central limit theorem for chains with unbounded variable length memory.
A stochastic differential equation with infinite memory is considered. The drift coefficient of the equation is a nonlinear functional of the past history of the solution. Sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of stationary solution are given.
Let $(X_n)_{n \in\mathbb{N}}$ be a $V$-geometrically ergodic Markov chain on a measurable space $\mathbb{X}$ with invariant probability distribution $π$. In this paper, we propose a discretization scheme providing a computable sequence $(\widehatπ_k)_{k\ge 1}$ of probability measures which approximates $π$ as $k$ growths to infinity. The probability measure $\widehatπ_k$ is computed from the invariant probability distribution of a finite Markov chain. The convergence rate in total variation of $(\widehatπ_k)_{k\ge 1}$ to $π$ is given. As a result, the specific case of first order autoregressiv…
For a given absorbing Markov chain $X^*$ on a finite state space, a chain $X$ is a sharp antidual of $X^*$ if the fastest strong stationary time of $X$ is equal, in distribution, to the absorption time of $X^*$. In this paper we show a systematic way of finding such an antidual based on some partial ordering of the state space. We use a theory of strong stationary duality developed recently for Möbius monotone Markov chains. We give several sharp antidual chains for Markov chain corresponding to a generalized coupon collector problem. As a consequence - utilizing known results on a limiting di…
For a Markov chain $Y$ with values in a Polish space, consider the entrance Markov chain obtained by sampling $Y$ at the moments when it enters a fixed set $A$ from its complement $A^c$. Similarly, consider the exit Markov chain, obtained by sampling $Y$ at the exit times from $A^c$ to $A$. This paper provides a framework for analysing invariant measures of these two types of Markov chains in the case when the initial chain $Y$ has a known $σ$-finite invariant measure. Under certain recurrence-type assumptions ($Y$ can be transient), we give explicit formulas for invariant measures of these ch…
An (upward) skip-free Markov chain with the set of nonnegative integers as state space is a chain for which upward jumps may be only of unit size; there is no restriction on downward jumps. In a 1987 paper, Brown and Shao determined, for an irreducible continuous-time skip-free chain and any d, the passage time distribution from state 0 to state d. When the nonzero eigenvalues nu_j of the generator are all real, their result states that the passage time is distributed as the sum of d independent exponential random variables with rates nu_j. We give another proof of their theorem. In the case o…
We suggest a method for constructing positive harmonic functions for a wide class of transition kernels on $Z^+$. We also find natural conditions under which these functions have positive finite limits at infinity. Further, we apply our results on harmonic functions to asymptotically homogeneous Markov chains on $Z^+$ with asymptotically negative drift. More precisely, assuming that Markov chain satisfy Cramér's condition, we study the tail asymptotics of the stationary distribution. In particular, we clarify the influence of the rate of convergence of jumps of the chain towards the limiting d…
We develop the theory of strong stationary duality for diffusion processes on compact intervals. We analytically derive the generator and boundary behavior of the dual process and recover a central tenet of the classical Markov chain theory in the diffusion setting by linking the separation distance in the primal diffusion to the absorption time in the dual diffusion. We also exhibit our strong stationary dual as the natural limiting process of the strong stationary dual sequence of a well chosen sequence of approximating birth-and-death Markov chains, allowing for simultaneous numerical simul…
We consider binary infinite order stochastic chains perturbed by a random noise. This means that at each time step, the value assumed by the chain can be randomly and independently flipped with a small fixed probability. We show that the transition probabilities of the perturbed chain are uniformly close to the corresponding transition probabilities of the original chain. As a consequence, in the case of stochastic chains with unbounded but otherwise finite variable length memory, we show that it is possible to recover the context tree of the original chain, using a suitable version of the alg…
A well-known theorem usually attributed to Keilson states that, for an irreducible continuous-time birth-and-death chain on the nonnegative integers and any d, the passage time from state 0 to state d is distributed as a sum of d independent exponential random variables. Until now, no probabilistic proof of the theorem has been known. In this paper we use the theory of strong stationary duality to give a stochastic proof of a similar result for discrete-time birth-and-death chains and geometric random variables, and the continuous-time result (which can also be given a direct stochastic proof)…
We present a new perfect simulation algorithm for stationary chains having unbounded variable length memory. This is the class of infnite memory chains for which the family of transition probabilities is represented by a probabilistic context tree. We do not assume any continuity condition: our condition is expressed in terms of the structure of the context tree. More precisely, the length of the contexts is a deterministic function of the distance to the last occurrence of some determined string of symbols. It turns out that the resulting class of chains can be seen as a natural extension of …
This paper considers continuous-time block-monotone Markov chains (BMMCs) and their block-augmented truncations. We first introduce the block monotonicity and block-wise dominance relation for continuous-time Markov chains, and then provide some fundamental results on the two notions. Using these results, we show that the stationary distribution vectors obtained by the block-augmented truncation converge to the stationary distribution vector of the original BMMC. We also show that the last-column-block-augmented truncation (LC-block-augmented truncation) provides the best (in a certain sense) …
This paper studies the subgeometric convergence of the stationary distribution in taking the infinite-level limit of a finite-level M/G/1-type Markov chain, that is, in letting the upper boundary level go to infinity. This study is performed through the fundamental deviation matrix, which is a block-decomposition-friendly solution for the Poisson equation of the deviation matrix. The fundamental deviation matrix yields a difference formula for the respective stationary distributions of the finite-level chain and the corresponding infinite-level chain. The difference formula plays a crucial rol…
In this paper, we study inference for chains of variable order under two distinct contamination regimes. Consider we have a chain of variable memory on a finite alphabet containing zero. At each instant of time an independent coin is flipped and if it turns head a contamination occurs. In the first regime a zero is read independent of the value of the chain. In the second regime, the value of another chain of variable memory is observed instead of the original one. Our results state that the difference between the transition probabilities of the original process and the corresponding ones of t…
In the continuity of a recent paper ([6]), dealing with finite Markov chains, this paper proposes and analyzes a recursive algorithm for the approximation of the quasi-stationary distribution of a general Markov chain living on a compact metric space killed in finite time. The idea is to run the process until extinction and then to bring it back to life at a position randomly chosen according to the (possibly weighted) empirical occupation measure of its past positions. General conditions are given ensuring the convergence of this measure to the quasi-stationary distribution of the chain. We t…
In this paper, we consider isotropic and stationary real Gaussian random fields defined on $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ and we investigate the asymptotic behavior, as $T\rightarrow +\infty$, of the empirical measure (excursion area) in $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ at any threshold, covering both cases when the field exhibits short and long memory, i.e. integrable and non-integrable temporal covariance. It turns out that the limiting distribution is not universal, depending both on the memory parameters and the threshold. In particular, in the long memory case a form of Berry's cancellation…
This note presents conjectures on polynomial/algebraic/sub-exponential convergence of transition probabilities for $λ$-null recurrent and $λ$-transient Markov chains in continuous time. The only known positive examples are in queueing, branching, and related models. Implications for the existence of limiting conditional distributions for $λ$-transient chains are discussed.
Stochastic chains with memory of variable length constitute an interesting family of stochastic chains of infinite order on a finite alphabet. The idea is that for each past, only a finite suffix of the past, called context, is enough to predict the next symbol. These models were first introduced in the information theory literature by Rissanen (1983) as a universal tool to perform data compression. Recently, they have been used to model up scientific data in areas as different as biology, linguistics and music. This paper presents a personal introductory guide to this class of models focusing…
We propose certain conditions which are sufficient for the functional law of the iterated logarithm (the Strassen invariance principle) for some general class of non-stationary Markov-Feller chains. This class may be briefly specified by the following two properties: firstly, the transition operator of the chain under consideration enjoys a non-linear Lyapunov-type condition, and secondly, there exists an appropriate Markovian coupling whose transition probability function can be decomposed into two parts, one of which is contractive and dominant in some sense. The construction of such a coupl…
This paper considers the normalized fundamental matrix for the northwest-corner (NW-corner) truncation of ergodic continuous-time Markov chains, technically, of their infinitesimal generators. We first present a limit formula for the normalized fundamental matrix of the NW-corner truncation of the ergodic (infinitesimal) generator. The limit formula shows that, as the order (size) of the NW-corner truncation diverges to infinity, the corresponding normalized fundamental matrix converges to a stochastic matrix whose rows are all equal to the stationary distribution vector of the ergodic generat…
