Cavity-free lasing of N$_2^+$ induced by a femtosecond laser pulse at 800~nm is nearly totally suppressed by a delayed twin pump pulse. We explain this surprising effect within the V-scheme of lasing without population inversion. A fast transfer of population between nitrogen ionic states X$^2Σ_g^+$ and A$^2Π_u$, induced by the second pulse, terminates the conditions for amplification in the system. Appearance of short lasing bursts at delays corresponding to revivals of rotational wave packets are explained along the same lines.
We report on the dark pulse emission of an all-normal dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser with a polarizer in cavity. We found experimentally that apart from the bright pulse emission, under appropriate conditions the fiber laser could also emit single or multiple dark pulses. Based on numerical simulations we interpret the dark pulse formation in the laser as a result of dark soliton shaping.
We present an experiment studying the interaction of a strongly focused 25 fs laser pulse with a tungsten nanotip, investigating the different regimes of laser-induced electron emission. We study the dependence of the electron yield with respect to the static electric field applied to the tip. Photoelectron spectra are recorded using a retarding field spectrometer and peaks separated by the photon energy are observed with a 45 % contrast. They are a clear signature of above threshold photoemission (ATP), and are confirmed by extensive spectrally resolved studies of the laser power dependence. …
We study THz-emission from a plasma driven by an incommensurate-frequency two-colour laser field. A semi-classical transient electron current model is derived from a fully quantum-mechanical description of the emission process in terms of sub-cycle field-ionization followed by continuum-continuum electron transitions. For the experiment, a CEP-locked laser and a near-degenerate optical parametric amplifier are used to produce two-colour pulses that consist of the fundamental and its near-half frequency. By choosing two incommensurate frequencies, the frequency of the CEP-stable THz-emission ca…
In this paper, the spontaneous bremsstrahlung emission from an electron scattered by two fixed nuclei in an intense laser field is investigated in details based upon the Volkov state and the Dirac-Volkov propagator. It has been found that the fundamental harmonic spectrum from the electron radiation exhibits distinctive fringes, which is dependent not only upon the internucleus distance and orientation, but also upon the initial energy of the electron and the laser intensity. By analyzing the differential cross section, we are able to explain these effects in terms of interference among the el…
We report on the investigation on harmonic-seeded remote laser emissions at 391 nm wavelength from strong-field ionized nitrogen molecules in three different gas mixtures, i.e., N2-Ar, N2-Xe and N2-Ne. We observed a decrease in the remote laser intensity in the N2-Xe mixture because of the decreased clamped intensity in the filament; whereas in the N2-Ne mixture, the remote laser intensity slightly increases because of the increased clamped intensity within the filament. Remarkably, although the clamped intensity in the filament remains nearly unchanged in the N2-Ar mixture because of the simi…
We present numerical simulations of high-order harmonic generation in helium using a temporally synthesised and spatially non-homogeneous strong laser field. The combination of temporal and spatial laser field synthesis results in a dramatic cut-off extension far beyond the usual semiclassical limit. Our predictions are based on the convergence of three complementary approaches: resolution of the three dimensional Time Dependent Schrödinger Equation, time-frequency analysis of the resulting dipole moment and classical trajectories extraction. Employing a combination of temporally and spatially…
We report the investigation of a collimated blue light generated in rubidium vapor due to the combined action of an ultrashort pulse train and a cw diode laser. Each step of the two-photon transition 5S - 5P$_{3/2}$ - 5D is excited by one of the lasers, and the induced coherence between the 5S and 6P$_{3/2}$ states is responsible for generating the blue beam. Measurements of the excitation spectrum reveal the frequency comb structure, indicating that each individual mode is responsible for inducing a nonlinear process. The strong signal dependency on the atomic density is characterized by a sh…
Experimental study on the soliton dynamics of a passively mode locked fiber ring laser firstly revealed a state of bound soliton operation in the laser, where two solitons bind together tightly with fixed pulse separation. We further report on the properties of the bound-soliton emission of the laser. In particular, we demonstrate both experimentally and numerically that, like the single pulse soliton operation of the laser, the bound soliton emission is another intrinsic feature of the laser.
We report on an investigation of simultaneous generation of several narrow-bandwidth laser-like coherent emissions from nitrogen molecular ions ( ) produced in intense mid-infrared laser fields. With systematic examinations on the dependences of coherent emissions on gas pressure as well as several laser parameters including laser intensity, polarization and wavelength of the pump laser pulses, we reveal that the multiple coherent emission lines generated in originate from a series of nonlinear processes beginning with four-wave mixing, followed with stimulated Raman scattering. Our analyses f…
The Formation of metastable molecules (Feshbach resonances) at the collision of two atoms and subsequent stimulated transition to a lower unbound electronic molecular state, with emission of a photon of the laser radiation has been investigated. This can develop, in particular, for $Rb_2$ molecules due to resonance scattering of two $Rb$ atoms. The considered process is a basis for the creation of excimer lasers. Expressions for the cross sections of elastic and inelastic resonance scattering and the intensity of the stimulated emission of the photons have been obtained.
We show that the pumping current is a convenient parameter for manipulating the temporal Localized Structures (LSs), also called localized pulses, found in passively mode-locked Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers. While short electrical pulses can be used for writing and erasing individual LSs, we demonstrate that a current modulation introduces a temporally evolving parameter landscape allowing to control the position and the dynamics of LSs. We show that the localized pulses drifting speed in this landscape depends almost exclusively on the local parameter value instead of depending on …
We demonstrate yellow laser emission using silicate glass fiber as the gain medium. By employing core pumping using widely available GaN diode lasers with emission at 445 nm, we show that Dy3+-doped aluminosilicate glass fiber can be readily excited creating sufficient gain at 581 nm. In this proof of concept demonstration, the maximum output power generated was 3 mW with a slope efficiency approximately 1.8% with respect to injected pump.
This paper describes a calculation of the spontaneous emission limited linewidth of a semiconductor laser consisting of hybrid or heterogeneously integrated, silicon and III-V intracavity components. Central to the approach are a) description of the multi-element laser cavity in terms of composite laser/free-space eigenmodes, b) use of multimode laser theory to treat mode competition and multiwave mixing, and c) incorporation of quantum-optical contributions to account for spontaneous emission effects. Application of the model is illustrated for the case of linewidth narrowing in an InAs quant…
We experimentally studied the spatial coherence of random laser emission from dye solutions containing nanoparticles. The spatial coherence, measured in a double-slit experiment, varied significantly with the density of scatterers and the size and shape of the excitation volume. A qualitative explanation is provided, illustrating the dramatic difference from the spatial coherence of a conventional laser. This work demonstrates that random lasers can be controlled to provide intense, spatially incoherent emission for applications in which spatial cross talk or speckle limit performance.
This paper reports on the quasi-three-level continuous wave laser operation based on waveguide structures in neodymium doped calcium niobium gallium garnet disordered crystal. Laser wavelength selection through the waveguide cross section was observed. Waveguide structures with different cross sections were fabricated by the ultrafast laser inscription, which have propagation losses around 1 dB/cm. With suitable pumping conditions, laser emissions were observed at the low-wavelengths of ~930 nm and ~890 nm. The lasing threshold for the low-wavelength emission was around 50 mW, which is far bel…
A coherent terahertz needle radiation emission mechanism is proposed. This mechanism can be realized in the experiments on femtosecond laser pulses interacting with surface of nanostructured ferromagnetic metal film. The proposed mechanism is based on exciting of coupled coherent phonon-magnon modes on a nanostructured metal surface by laser femtosecond pulse. The value of the Poynting vector for the terahertz radiation is estimated.
Angle-resolved reflection and emission spectra of metal gratings consisting of sub-wavelength grooves and immersed into rhodamine B and rhodamine 19 solutions are presented. The measured reflection and emission dispersion diagrams reveal the surface plasmon polaritons positions and strong plasmon mediated emission enhancement, respectively. The same grating could be easily re-used for the characterization of different dye-molecules.
In this work we use femtosecond laser pulses of 800 nm wavelength to excite and characterize the multiphoton luminescence emission of single gold nanoparticles. For excitation with 100 fs laser pulses we observe a two and three photon emission dominated by radiative electron hole pair recombination, while the emission is caused by radiative plasmon decay for excitation with 500 fs pulses. For single gold nanorods with different aspect ratios, we study the interplay between the particle plasmon and electron hole pairs, which enables us to develop a quantitative model to fully describe the two a…
We demonstrated an all polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) laser which could offer selective transverse mode emission. Offset and cross splicing between PMF sections was used to generate higher order mode and to yield a birefringence induced mode filter. Polarization rotation technique (PRT) was used to select the output beam profile. Both linear cavity and ring cavity were explored. Experimentally, 360° rotating LP11 mode and OAM vortex beam with plus and minus 1 topological charges have been realized from an all PMF linear cavity laser and a ring cavity laser respectively.
A method is proposed to control the transverse motion and X-ray emission of an electron beam in a laser driven wakefield by tuning the laser spatial chirp. The dispersion of a transversely chirped laser pulse and the transverse nonuniform refractive index of the plasma channel result in transverse laser centroid oscillations, which leads to periodic transverse oscillations of the laser-driven wake. Electrons accelerated inside the wake also undergo transverse oscillations making wiggler like motion. Both the oscillation period and amplitude can be controlled by tuning the laser chirp, the puls…
We experimentally demonstrate an optically-pumped III-V/Si vertical-cavity laser with lateral emission into a silicon waveguide. This on-chip hybrid laser comprises a distributed Bragg reflector, a III-V active layer, and a high-contrast grating reflector, which simultaneously funnels light into the waveguide integrated with the laser. This laser has the advantages of long-wavelength vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, such as low threshold and high side-mode suppression ratio, while allowing integration with silicon photonic circuits, and is fabricated using CMOS-compatible processes. It…
We investigate terahertz emission from two-color fs-laser-induced microplasmas. Under strongest focusing conditions, microplasmas are shown to act as point-sources for broadband terahertz-to-far-infrared radiation, where the emission bandwidth is determined by the plasma density. Semi-analytical modeling allows us to identify scaling laws with respect to important laser parameters. In particular, we find that the optical-to-THz conversion efficiency crucially depends on the focusing conditions. We use this insight to demonstrate by means of Maxwell-consistent 3D simulations, that for only 10-$…
We report on a long wavelength emitting rare earth doped fiber laser with emission centered at 3.5 μm and tunable across 450 nm. The longest wavelength emission was 3.78 μm, which is the longest emission from a fiber laser operating at room temperature. In a simple optical arrangement employing dielectric mirrors for feedback, the laser was capable of emitting 1.45 W of near diffraction limited output power at 3.47 μm. These emission characteristics compliment the emission from quantum cascade lasers and demonstrate how all infrared dual wavelength pumping can be used to access high lying rare…
We numerically investigate the conical emission (CE) from ultrashort laser filaments, both considering and disregarding the higher-order Kerr effect (HOKE). While the consideration of HOKE has almost no influence on the predicted CE from collimated beams, differences arise for tightly focused beams. This difference is attributed to the different relative contributions of the non-linear focus and of the modulational instability over the whole filament length.
Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has become a proven contemporary workhorse for qualitative and quantitative analysis of materials. Recent developments in LIBS have been limited either to signal enhancement strategies or to advances in data analysis techniques that yield better interpretation of LIBS data. Explorations of the initial laser excitation stage of LIBS remain somewhat restricted. In particular, the influence, if any, of the polarization state of excitation laser remains unexplored to a large extent. The current work addresses this lacuna in knowledge by probing the influ…
We investigated femtosecond laser ablation dynamics using THz time-domain spectroscopy. To clarify the breakdown dynamics of materials, we focused on the motion of charged particles and measured the terahertz waves emitted during laser ablation. We revealed that the Coulomb force dominated the ablation process. Furthermore, comparisons of the experimental results with theoretical models showed that material breakdown occurs within a few hundred femtoseconds. Our experimental results indicate that electrostatic ablation is the most likely ablation mechanism for metals.
We theoretically examine the effect of external optical injection on the spatio-temporal dynamics of class-B broad-area lasers. We demonstrate that optical injection can efficiently stabilize the intrinsic transverse instabilities in such lasers associated with both the boundaries of the pumping area and with the bulk nonlinearities of the active medium. Stabilizing action of optical injection is shown to be closely related to the suppression of inherent relaxation oscillations behavior.
The angular emission pattern of a random laser is typically very irregular and difficult to tune. Here we show by detailed numerical calculations that one can overcome the lack of control over this emission pattern by actively shaping the spatial pump distribution. We demonstrate, in particular, how to obtain customized pump profiles to achieve highly directional emission. Going beyond the regime of strongly scattering media where localized modes with a given directionality can simply be selected by the pump, we present an optimization-based approach which shapes extended lasing modes in the w…
We report on a solid-state laser structure being the organic counterpart of the Vertical External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VECSEL) design. The gain medium is a poly (methyl methacrylate) film doped with Rhodamine 640, spin-casted onto the High-Reflectivity mirror of a plano-concave resonator. Upon pumping by 7-ns pulses at 532 nm, a diffraction-limited beam (M^2=1) was obtained, with a conversion efficiency of 43%; higher peak powers (2kW) could be attained when resorting to shorter (0.5 ns) pump pulses. The spectrum was controlled by the thickness of the active layer playing the role of…
A hallmark of spin-lasers, injected with spin-polarized carriers, is their threshold behavior with the onset of stimulated emission. Unlike the single threshold in conventional lasers with unpolarized carriers, two thresholds are expected in spin lasers. With the progress in scaled-down lasers and the use of novel two-dimensional materials it is unclear if the common description of spin lasers assuming a negligible spontaneous emission and linear optical gain remains relevant or even how to identify the lasing thresholds. Our rate-equation description addresses these questions by considering a…
The microscopic dynamics of laser-driven coherent synchrotron emission transmitted through thin foils are investigated using particle-in-cell simulations. For normal incidence interactions, we identify the formation of two distinct electron nanobunches from which emission takes place each half-cycle of the driving laser pulse. These emissions are separated temporally by 130 attoseconds and are dominant in different frequency ranges, which is a direct consequence of the distinct characteristics of each electron nanobunch. This may be exploited through spectral filtering to isolate these emissio…
We demonstrate lasing mode selection in nearly circular semiconductor microdisks by shaping the spatial profile of optical pump. Despite of strong mode overlap, adaptive pumping suppresses all lasing modes except the targeted one. Due to slight deformation of the cavity shape and boundary roughness, each lasing mode has distinct emission pattern. By selecting different mode to be the dominant lasing mode, we can switch both the lasing frequency and the output direction. Such tunability by external pump after the laser is fabricated enhances the functionality of semiconductor microcavity lasers…
A long existing issue for microdisk lasers is the small spontaneous emission coupling rate (β) in microdisk,. We found that it is due to the coupling of emitter spontaneous emission into competing Fabry-Perot (FP) modes in the microdisk cavity. Based on this analysis, we propose a new type of photonic crystal microdisk (PCM) laser to drastically suppress the photonic density of states in the vertical FP modes. As a result, we obtained a three fold increase of β than previously reported highest β of 0.15 at room temperature. The spontaneous emission control in truncated photonic crystals become…
This paper presents a simplified theoretical model for the study of emission from laser produced plasma to better understand the processes and the factors involved in the onset of saturation in plasma emission as well as in increasing emission due to plasma confinement. This model considers that plasma emission is directly proportional to the square of plasma density, its volume and the fraction of laser pulse absorbed through inverse Bremsstrahlung in the pre-formed plasma plume produced by the initial part of the laser. This shows that plasma density and temperature decide the threshold for …
We design and fabricate an on-chip laser source that produces a directional beam with low spatial coherence. The lasing modes are based on the axial orbit in a stable cavity and have good directionality. To reduce the spatial coherence of emission, the number of transverse lasing modes is maximized by fine-tuning the cavity geometry. Decoherence is reached in a few nanoseconds. Such rapid decoherence will facilitate applications in ultrafast speckle-free full-field imaging.
Theory of electron emission by metallic photocathodes under the exposure of long wavelength lasers will be studied. Energy of photons in long wavelength lasers is less than the work function of the photocathode material, and can only emit electrons via tunneling through the potential barrier. The optical resonance effect (e.g. plasmonic resonances) will be studied as an improvement to the performance of photocathodes. This paper is intended to provide self-sufficient materials to design optical resonant surfaces (e.g. metasurfaces) for electron emission applications.
The far-field emission of two dimensional (2D) stadium-shaped dielectric cavities is investigated. Micro-lasers with such shape present a highly directional emission. We provide experimental evidence of the dependance of the emission directionality on the shape of the stadium, in good agreement with ray numerical simulations. We develop a simple geometrical optics model which permits to explain analytically main observed features. Wave numerical calculations confirm the results.
Nanoscale lasers sustain few optical modes so that the fraction of spontaneous emission $β$ funnelled into the useful (lasing) mode is high (of the order of few 10$^{-1}$) and the threshold, which traditionally corresponds to an abrupt kink in the light in- light out curve, becomes ill-defined. We propose an alternative definition of the threshold, based on the dynamical response of the laser, which is valid even for $β=1$ lasers. The laser dynamics is analyzed through a reconstruction of its phase-space trajectory for pulsed excitation. Crossing the threshold brings about a change in the shap…
It is shown that the interference between spontaneous emission into the non-lasing supermode and the laser field of a semiconductor laser array causes spatial holeburning which couples the dynamics of the spontaneous emission with the laser field. In particular, phase locking between the spontaneous emission and the lasing mode leads to the formation of a spectral triplet composed of in-phase relaxation oscillation sidebands and an out-of-phase line at the lasing frequency.
We study light emission patterns from stadium-shaped semiconductor (GaAs) microcavity lasers theoretically and experimentally. Performing systematic wave calculations for passive cavity modes, we demonstrate that the averaging by low-loss modes, such as those realized in multi-mode lasing, generates an emission pattern in good agreement with the ray model's prediction. In addition, we show that the dependence of experimental far-field emission patterns on the aspect ratio of the stadium cavity is well reproduced by the ray model.
Luminescence as a mechanism for terahertz emission from femtosecond laser-induced plasmas is studied. By using a fully microscopic theory, Coulomb scattering between electrons and ions is shown to lead to luminescence even for a spatially homogeneous plasma. The spectral features introduced by the rod geometry of laser-induced plasma channels in air are discussed on the basis of a generalized mode-function analysis.
One of the primary difficulties in the implementation of organic-dye-based random lasers is the tendency of organic dyes to irreversibly photodecay. In this letter we report the observation of "reversible" photodegradation in a Rhodamine 6G and ZrO$_2$ nanoparticle doped polyurethane random laser. We find that during degradation the emission broadens, redshifts, and decreases in intensity. After degradation the system is observed to self-heal leading to the emission returning to its pristine intensity, giving a recovery efficiency of 100%. While the peak intensity fully recovers, the process i…
Frequency-angular distributions for THz emission in the range of 0.1 - 3 THz generated in a single-color laser filament plasma situated both under and without electrostatic field are for the first time experimentally studied. The angular distribution for various spectral components of this THz emission is demonstrated to differ significantly. The maximal propagation angles for these components grow up under the electric field, the angular distribution for the low-frequency THz emission depending significantly on the laser pulse energy in contrast to the case of no electric field. An increase i…
We present a theoretical and experimental study aimed at characterizing statistical regimes in a random laser. Both the theoretical simulations and the experimental results show the possibility of three region of fluctuations increasing the pumping energy. An initial Gaussian regime is followed by a Lévy statistics and Gaussian statistic is recovered again for high pump pulse energy. These different statistical regimes are possible in a weakly diffusive active medium, while the region of Lévy statistics disappears when the medium is strongly diffusive presenting always a Gaussian regime with s…
We use a conceptually new approach to theoretical modeling of self-focusing in which we integrated diffractive and geometrical optics in order to explain and predict emission of white light and colored rings observed in ultrashort laser pulse interaction. In our approach laser beam propagation is described by blending solution of linear Maxwell's equation and a correction term that represents nonlinear field perturbation expressed in terms of paraxial ray-optics (eikonal) equation. No attempt is made to create appearance of exhaustive treatment via use of complex mathematical models. Rather, e…
Photoelectron field emission, induced by femtosecond laser pulses focused on metallic nanotips, provides spatially coherent and temporally short electron pulses. The properties of the photoelectron yield give insight into both the material properties of the nanostructure and the exciting laser focus. Ultralong nanoribbons, grown as a single crystal attached to a metallic taper, are sources of electron field emission that have not yet been characterized. In this report, photoemission from gold nanoribbon samples is studied and compared to emission from tungsten and gold tips. We observe that th…
Recently, on-chip single-mode laser emission has attracted considerable research attention due to its wide applications. While most of single-mode lasers in coupled microdisks or microrings have been qualitatively explained by either Vernier effect or inversed Vernier effect, none of them have been experimentally confirmed. Here, we studied the mechanism for single-mode operation in coupled microdisks. We found that the mode numbers had been significantly reduced to nearly single-mode within a large pumping power range from threshold to gain saturation. The detail laser spectra showed that the…
Self-induced transparency pulses propagating in a random medium embedded in a two-level system can transfer energy to localized Anderson states. This allows the onset of two-level laser-like action.
Broadband coherent light sources are becoming increasingly important for sensing and spectroscopic applications, especially in the mid-infrared and terahertz (THz) spectral regions, where the unique absorption characteristics of a whole host of molecules are located. The desire to miniaturize such light emitters has recently lead to spectacular advances with compact on-chip lasers that cover both of these spectral regions. The long wavelength and the small size of the sources result in a strongly diverging laser beam that is difficult to focus on the target that one aims to perform spectroscop…
Two-color photoionization produces a cycle-averaged current driving broadband, conically emitted THz radiation. We investigate, through simulation, the processes determining the angle of conical emission. We find that the emission angle is determined by an optical Cherenkov effect, where the front velocity of the current source is faster than the THz phase velocity.
We report on a series of experiments on the dynamics of spontaneous emission controlled nanolasers. The laser cavity is a photonic crystal slab cavity, embedding self-assembled quantum dots as gain material. The implementation of cavity electrodynamics effects increases significantly the large signal modulation bandwidth, with measured modulation speeds of the order of 10 GHz while keeping an extinction ratio of 19 dB. A linear transient wavelength shift is reported, corresponding to a chirp of less than 100 pm for a 35-ps laser pulse. We observe that the chirp characteristics are independent …
It is shown that focusing circularly-polarized 800 nm light pulses of 100 fs duration on the tips of p-GaAs crystalline shards having no negative electron affinity (NEA) activation results in electron emission that is both fast and spin-polarized. The 400 fs duration of the emission process was determined by pump/probe measurements. The three samples we investigated produced electron polarizations of 13.1(9)%, 13.3(7)%, and 10.4(2)%. Emission currents ranged between 50 pA and 3 nA with a sample bias of -100V and average laser power of 100 mW. The electron emission exhibited linear dichroism an…
In recent years X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) proved to be unmatched sources of ultrashort pulses of spatially coherent quasimonochromatic X-ray radiation. Diagnostics of XFEL emission properties, in particular pulse duration, spectrum and temporal profile is extremely important in order to analyze the experimental results. In this paper we propose a cost-effective method to examine these properties of Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) pulses. It only requires an ensemble of measured SASE spectra and provides the temporal autocorrelation of the ensemble-averaged Wigner distributi…
We develop a simple model for the slow lights in Vertical Cavity Surface Emission Lasers (VCSELs), with the combination of cavity and population pulsation effects. The dependences of probe signal power, injection bias current and wavelength detuning for the group delays are demonstrated numerically and experimentally. Up to 65 ps group delays and up to 10 GHz modulation frequency can be achieved in the room temperature at the wavelength of 1.3 $μ$m. The most significant feature of our VCSEL device is that the length of active region is only several $μ$m long. Based on the experimental paramete…
