Steen's (2018) Hintikka set properties for Church's type theory based on primitive equality are reduced to the Hintikka set properties of Brown (2007). Using this reduction, a model existence theorem for Steen's properties is derived.
Moores Paradox is a test case for any formal theory of belief. In Knowledge and Belief, Hintikka developed a multimodal logic for statements that express sentences containing the epistemic notions of knowledge and belief. His account purports to offer an explanation of the paradox. In this paper I argue that Hintikkas interpretation of one of the doxastic operators is philosophically problematic and leads to an unnecessarily strong logical system. I offer a weaker alternative that captures in a more accurate way our logical intuitions about the notion of belief without sacrificing the possibil…
Epistemic logic has become a major field of philosophical logic ever since the groundbreaking work by Hintikka (1962). Despite its various successful applications in theoretical computer science, AI, and game theory, the technical development of the field has been mainly focusing on the propositional part, i.e., the propositional modal logics of "knowing that". However, knowledge is expressed in everyday life by using various other locutions such as "knowing whether", "knowing what", "knowing how" and so on (knowing-wh hereafter). Such knowledge expressions are better captured in quantified ep…

We develop a conceptually clear, intuitive, and feasible decision procedure for testing satisfiability in the full multi-agent epistemic logic CMAEL(CD) with operators for common and distributed knowledge for all coalitions of agents mentioned in the language. To that end, we introduce Hintikka structures for CMAEL(CD) and prove that satisfiability in such structures is equivalent to satisfiability in standard models. Using that result, we design an incremental tableau-building procedure that eventually constructs a satisfying Hintikka structure for every satisfiable input set of formulae of C…
The paper gives a soundness and completeness proof for the implicative fragment of intuitionistic calculus with respect to the semantics of computability logic, which understands intuitionistic implication as interactive algorithmic reduction. This concept -- more precisely, the associated concept of reducibility -- is a generalization of Turing reducibility from the traditional, input/output sorts of problems to computational tasks of arbitrary degrees of interactivity. See http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~giorgi/cl.html for a comprehensive online source on computability logic.
Within the program of finding axiomatizations for various parts of computability logic, it was proved earlier that the logic of interactive Turing reduction is exactly the implicative fragment of Heyting's intuitionistic calculus. That sort of reduction permits unlimited reusage of the computational resource represented by the antecedent. An at least equally basic and natural sort of algorithmic reduction, however, is the one that does not allow such reusage. The present article shows that turning the logic of the first sort of reduction into the logic of the second sort of reduction takes not…

Equilibrium logic is an approach to nonmonotonic reasoning that extends the stable-model and answer-set semantics for logic programs. In particular, it includes the general case of nested logic programs, where arbitrary Boolean combinations are permitted in heads and bodies of rules, as special kinds of theories. In this paper, we present polynomial reductions of the main reasoning tasks associated with equilibrium logic and nested logic programs into quantified propositional logic, an extension of classical propositional logic where quantifications over atomic formulas are permitted. We provi…
We present a type inference algorithm for lambda-terms in Elementary Affine Logic using linear constraints. We prove that the algorithm is correct and complete.
In this paper we investigate the existence of model-equivalence reduction between NP-logic systems which are logic systems with model existence problem in NP. It is shown that among all NP-systems with model checking problem in NP, the existentially quantified propositional logic (\exists PF) is maximal with respect to poly-time model-equivalent reduction. However, \exists PF seems not a maximal NP-system in general because there exits a NP-system with model checking problem D^P-complete.
We consider a general prescriptive type system with parametric polymorphism and subtyping for logic programs. The property of subject reduction expresses the consistency of the type system w.r.t. the execution model: if a program is "well-typed", then all derivations starting in a "well-typed" goal are again "well-typed". It is well-established that without subtyping, this property is readily obtained for logic programs w.r.t. their standard (untyped) execution model. Here we give syntactic conditions that ensure subject reduction also in the presence of general subtyping relations between typ…
This paper studies a formalisation of intuitionistic logic by Negri and von Plato which has general introduction and elimination rules. The philosophical importance of the system is expounded. Definitions of `maximal formula', `segment' and `maximal segment' suitable to the system are formulated and corresponding reduction procedures for maximal formulas and permutative reduction procedures for maximal segments given. Alternatives to the main method used are also considered. It is shown that deductions in the system convert into normal form and that deductions in normal form have the subformul…
In this paper we develop a 2-valued reduction of many-valued logics, into 2-valued multi-modal logics. Such an approach is based on the contextualization of many-valued logics with the introduction of higher-order Herbrand interpretation types, where we explicitly introduce the coexistence of a set of algebraic truth values of original many-valued logic, transformed as parameters (or possible worlds), and the set of classic two logic values. This approach is close to the approach used in annotated logics, but offers the possibility of using the standard semantics based on Herbrand interpretati…
Public announcement logic(PAL) is an extension of epistemic logic (EL) with some reduction axioms. In this paper, we propose a cut-free labelled sequent calculus for PAL, which is an extension of that for EL with sequent rules adapted from the reduction axioms. This calculus admits cut and allows terminating proof search.
The logic of equality with uninterpreted functions (EUF) provides a means of abstracting the manipulation of data by a processor when verifying the correctness of its control logic. By reducing formulas in this logic to propositional formulas, we can apply Boolean methods such as Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs) and Boolean satisfiability checkers to perform the verification. We can exploit characteristics of the formulas describing the verification conditions to greatly simplify the propositional formulas generated. In particular, we exploit the property that many equations appear only…
Typing of lambda-terms in Elementary and Light Affine Logic (EAL, LAL, resp.) has been studied for two different reasons: on the one hand the evaluation of typed terms using LAL (EAL, resp.) proof-nets admits a guaranteed polynomial (elementary, resp.) bound; on the other hand these terms can also be evaluated by optimal reduction using the abstract version of Lamping's algorithm. The first reduction is global while the second one is local and asynchronous. We prove that for LAL (EAL, resp.) typed terms, Lamping's abstract algorithm also admits a polynomial (elementary, resp.) bound. We also s…
Diagram chasing is not an easy task. The coherence holds in a generalized sense if we have a mechanical method to judge whether given two morphisms are equal to each other. A simple way to this end is to reform a concerned category into a calculus, where the instructions for the diagram chasing are given in the form of rewriting rules. We apply this idea to the categorical semantics of the linear logic. We build a calculus directly on the free category of the semantics. It enables us to perform diagram chasing as essentially one-way computations led by the rewriting rules. We verify the weak t…
Metric Temporal Logic $\mathsf{MTL}[\until_I,\since_I]$ is one of the most studied real time logics. It exhibits considerable diversity in expressiveness and decidability properties based on the permitted set of modalities and the nature of time interval constraints $I$. Henzinger et al., in their seminal paper showed that the non-punctual fragment of $\mathsf{MTL}$ called $\mathsf{MITL}$ is decidable. In this paper, we sharpen this decidability result by showing that the partially punctual fragment of $\mathsf{MTL}$ (denoted $\mathsf{PMTL}$) is decidable over strictly monotonic finite point w…
The class of Unambiguous Star-Free Regular Languages (UL) was defined by Schutzenberger as the class of languages defined by Unambiguous Polynomials. UL has been variously characterized (over finite words) by logics such as TL[X_a,Y_a], UITL, TL[F,P], FO2[<], the variety DA of monoids, as well as partially-ordered two-way DFA (po2DFA). We revisit this language class with emphasis on notion of unambiguity and develop on the concept of Deterministic Logics for UL. The formulas of deterministic logics uniquely parse a word in order to evaluate satisfaction. We show that several deterministic logi…
Bilateralists hold that the meanings of the connectives are determined by rules of inference for their use in deductive reasoning with asserted and denied formulas. This paper presents two bilateral connectives comparable to Prior's tonk, for which, unlike for tonk, there are reduction steps for the removal of maximal formulas arising from introducing and eliminating formulas with those connectives as main operators. Adding either of them to bilateral classical logic results in an incoherent system. One way around this problem is to count formulas as maximal that are the conclusion of reductio…
We present the derivation reduction problem for SLD-resolution, the undecidable problem of finding a finite subset of a set of clauses from which the whole set can be derived using SLD-resolution. We study the reducibility of various fragments of second-order Horn logic with particular applications in Inductive Logic Programming. We also discuss how these results extend to standard resolution.
We present an algorithm which, for given $n$, generates an unambiguous regular tree grammar defining the set of combinatory logic terms, over the set $\{S,K\}$ of primitive combinators, requiring exactly $n$ normal-order reduction steps to normalize. As a consequence of Curry and Feys's standardization theorem, our reduction grammars form a complete syntactic characterization of normalizing combinatory logic terms. Using them, we provide a recursive method of constructing ordinary generating functions counting the number of $S K$-combinators reducing in $n$ normal-order reduction steps. Finall…
SPKI/SDSI is a proposed public key infrastructure standard that incorporates the SDSI public key infrastructure. SDSI's key innovation was the use of local names. We previously introduced a Logic of Local Name Containment that has a clear semantics and was shown to completely characterize SDSI name resolution. Here we show how our earlier approach can be extended to deal with a number of key features of SPKI, including revocation, expiry dates, and tuple reduction. We show that these extensions add relatively little complexity to the logic. In particular, we do not need a nonmonotonic logic to…
Ability to count number of occurrences of events within a specified time interval is very useful in specification of resource bounded real time computation. In this paper, we study an extension of Metric Temporal Logic ($\mathsf{MTL}$) with two different counting modalities called $\mathsf{C}$ and $\mathsf{UT}$ (until with threshold), which enhance the expressive power of $\mathsf{MTL}$ in orthogonal fashion. We confine ourselves only to the future fragment of $\mathsf{MTL}$ interpreted in a pointwise manner over finite timed words. We provide a comprehensive study of the expressive power of l…
We consider the call-by-value lambda-calculus extended with a may-convergent non-deterministic choice and a must-convergent parallel composition. Inspired by recent works on the relational semantics of linear logic and non-idempotent intersection types, we endow this calculus with a type system based on the so-called Girard's second translation of intuitionistic logic into linear logic. We prove that a term is typable if and only if it is converging, and that its typing tree carries enough information to give a bound on the length of its lazy call-by-value reduction. Moreover, when the typing …
Let gamma be a (not necessarily finite) structure with a finite relational signature. We prove that deciding whether a given existential positive sentence holds in gamma is in Logspace or complete for the class CSP(gamma)_NP under deterministic polynomial-time many-one reductions. Here, CSP(gamma)_NP is the class of problems that can be reduced to the Constraint Satisfaction Problem of gamma under non-deterministic polynomial-time many-one reductions.
We present a calculus providing a Curry-Howard correspondence to classical logic represented in the sequent calculus with explicit structural rules, namely weakening and contraction. These structural rules introduce explicit erasure and duplication of terms, respectively. We present a type system for which we prove the type-preservation under reduction. A mutual relation with classical calculus featuring implicit structural rules has been studied in detail. From this analysis we derive strong normalisation property.
Program specialization is a program transformation methodology which improves program efficiency by exploiting the information about the input data which are available at compile time. We show that current techniques for program specialization based on partial evaluation do not perform well on nondeterministic logic programs. We then consider a set of transformation rules which extend the ones used for partial evaluation, and we propose a strategy for guiding the application of these extended rules so to derive very efficient specialized programs. The efficiency improvements which sometimes ar…
We introduce Probabilistic Dependent Type Systems (PDTS) via a functional language based on a subsystem of intuitionistic type theory including dependent sums and products, which is expanded to include stochastic functions. We provide a sampling-based semantics for the language based on non-deterministic beta reduction. Further, we derive a probabilistic logic from the PDTS introduced as a direct result of the Curry-Howard isomorphism. The probabilistic logic derived is shown to provide a universal representation for finite discrete distributions.
The entailment problem $φ\models ψ$ in Separation Logic \cite{IshtiaqOHearn01,Reynolds02}, between separated conjunctions of equational ($x \iseq y$ and $x \not\iseq y$), spatial ($x \mapsto (y_1,\ldots,y_\rank)$) and predicate ($p(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$) atoms, interpreted by a finite set of inductive rules, is undecidable in general. Certain restrictions on the set of inductive definitions lead to decidable classes of entailment problems. Currently, there are two such decidable classes, based on two restrictions, called \emph{establishment} \cite{IosifRogalewiczSimacek13,KatelaanMathejaZuleger19,P…
We introduce a proof system for Hajek's logic BL based on a relational hypersequents framework. We prove that the rules of our logical calculus, called RHBL, are sound and invertible with respect to any valuation of BL into a suitable algebra, called omega[0,1]. Refining the notion of reduction tree that arises naturally from RHBL, we obtain a decision algorithm for BL provability whose running time upper bound is 2^O(n), where n is the number of connectives of the input formula. Moreover, if a formula is unprovable, we exploit the constructiveness of a polynomial time algorithm for leaves val…
We present a quantitative basis-independent analysis of combinatory logic. Using a general argument regarding plane binary trees with labelled leaves, we generalise the results of David et al. and Bendkowski et al. to all Turing-complete combinator bases proving, inter alia, that asymptotically almost no combinator is strongly normalising nor typeable. We exploit the structure of recently discovered normal-order reduction grammars showing that for each positive $n$, the set of $\mathbf{S} \mathbf{K}$-combinators reducing in $n$ normal-order reduction steps has positive asymptotic density in th…
First-order temporal logics are notorious for their bad computational behaviour. It is known that even the two-variable monadic fragment is highly undecidable over various linear timelines, and over branching time even one-variable fragments might be undecidable. However, there have been several attempts on finding well-behaved fragments of first-order temporal logics and related temporal description logics, mostly either by restricting the available quantifier patterns, or considering sub-Boolean languages. Here we analyse seemingly `mild' extensions of decidable one-variable fragments with c…
Approximate computing is an attractive paradigm for reducing the design complexity of error-resilient systems, therefore improving performance and saving power consumption. In this work, we propose a new two-level approximate logic synthesis method based on cube insertion and removal procedures. Experimental results have shown significant literal count and runtime reduction compared to the state-of-the-art approach. The method scalability is illustrated for a high error threshold over large benchmark circuits. The obtained solutions have presented a literal number reduction up to 38%, 56% and …
We consider prescriptive type systems for logic programs (as in Goedel or Mercury). In such systems, the typing is static, but it guarantees an operational property: if a program is "well-typed", then all derivations starting in a "well-typed" query are again "well-typed". This property has been called subject reduction. We show that this property can also be phrased as a property of the proof-theoretic semantics of logic programs, thus abstracting from the usual operational (top-down) semantics. This proof-theoretic view leads us to questioning a condition which is usually considered necessar…
We give a new type inference algorithm for typing lambda-terms in Elementary Affine Logic (EAL), which is motivated by applications to complexity and optimal reduction. Following previous references on this topic, the variant of EAL type system we consider (denoted EAL*) is a variant without sharing and without polymorphism. Our algorithm improves over the ones already known in that it offers a better complexity bound: if a simple type derivation for the term t is given our algorithm performs EAL* type inference in polynomial time.
This paper presents a study of operational and type-theoretic properties of different resolution strategies in Horn clause logic. We distinguish four different kinds of resolution: resolution by unification (SLD-resolution), resolution by term-matching, the recently introduced structural resolution, and partial (or lazy) resolution. We express them all uniformly as abstract reduction systems, which allows us to undertake a thorough comparative analysis of their properties. To match this small-step semantics, we propose to take Howard's System H as a type-theoretic semantic counterpart. Using S…
This paper defines intersection and union type assignment for the calculus X, a substitution free language that enjoys the Curry-Howard correspondence with respect to Gentzen's sequent calculus for classical logic. We show that this notion is closed for subject-expansion, and show that it needs to be restricted to satisfy subject-reduction as well, making it unsuitable to define a semantics.
Descriptive complexity theory aims at inferring a problem's computational complexity from the syntactic complexity of its description. A cornerstone of this theory is Fagin's Theorem, by which a graph property is expressible in existential second-order logic (ESO logic) if, and only if, it is in NP. A natural question, from the theory's point of view, is which syntactic fragments of ESO logic also still characterize NP. Research on this question has culminated in a dichotomy result by Gottlob, Kolatis, and Schwentick: for each possible quantifier prefix of an ESO formula, the resulting prefix …
