We introduce the First Light And Reionisation Epoch Simulations (FLARES), a suite of zoom simulations using the EAGLE model. We resimulate a range of overdensities during the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) in order to build composite distribution functions, as well as explore the environmental dependence of galaxy formation and evolution during this critical period of galaxy assembly. The regions are selected from a large $(3.2 \;\mathrm{cGpc})^{3}$ parent volume, based on their overdensity within a sphere of radius $14\,h^{-1}\;\mathrm{cMpc}$. We then resimulate with full hydrodynamics, and employ a novel weighting scheme that allows the construction of composite distribution functions that are representative of the full parent volume. This significantly extends the dynamic range compared to smaller volume periodic simulations. We present an analysis of the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF), the star formation rate distribution function (SFRF) and the star forming sequence (SFS) predicted by \flares, and compare to a number of observational and model constraints. We also analyse the environmental dependence over an unprecedented range of overdensity. Both the GSMF and the SFRF exhibit a clear double-Schechter form, up to the highest redshifts ($z = 10$). We also find no environmental dependence of the SFS normalisation. The increased dynamic range probed by FLARES will allow us to make predictions for a number of large area surveys that will probe the EoR in coming years, such as WFIRST and Euclid.
We present the intrinsic and observed sizes of galaxies at $z\geq5$ in the First Light And Reionisation Epoch Simulations (FLARES). We employ the large effective volume of FLARES to produce a sizeable sample of high redshift galaxies with intrinsic and observed luminosities and half light radii in a range of rest frame UV and visual photometric bands. This sample contains a significant number of intrinsically ultra-compact galaxies in the far-UV (1500 angstrom), leading to a negative intrinsic far-UV size-luminosity relation. However, after the inclusion of the effects of dust these same compa…
We present the photometric properties of galaxies in the First Light and Reionisation Epoch Simulations (FLARES). The simulations trace the evolution of galaxies in a range of overdensities through the Epoch of Reionistion (EoR). With a novel weighting scheme we combine these overdensities, extending significantly the dynamic range of observed composite distribution functions compared to periodic simulation boxes. FLARES predicts a significantly larger number of intrinsically bright galaxies, which can be explained through a simple model linking dust-attenuation to the metal content of the int…
Using the First Light And Reionisation Epoch Simulations (\textsc{Flares}) we explore the dust driven properties of massive high-redshift galaxies at $z\in[5,10]$. By post-processing the galaxy sample using the radiative transfer code \textsc{skirt} we obtain the full spectral energy distribution. We explore the resultant luminosity functions, IRX-$β$ relations as well as the luminosity-weighted dust temperatures in the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR). We find that most of our results are in agreement with the current set of observations, but under-predict the number densities of bright IR galaxie…
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is set to transform many areas of astronomy, one of the most exciting is the expansion of the redshift frontier to $z>10$. In its first year alone JWST should discover hundreds of galaxies, dwarfing the handful currently known. To prepare for these powerful observational constraints, we use the First Light And Reionisation Epoch (FLARES) simulations to predict the physical and observational properties of the $z>10$ population of galaxies accessible to JWST. This is the first time such predictions have been made using a hydrodynamical model validated at low…
The star formation and metal enrichment histories of galaxies - at any epoch - constitute one of the key properties of galaxies, and their measurement is a core aim of observational extragalactic astronomy. The lack of deep rest-frame optical coverage at high-redshift has made robust constraints elusive, but this is now changing thanks to the \emph{James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)}. In preparation for the constraints provided by \emph{JWST} we explore the star formation and metal enrichment histories of galaxies at $z=5-13$ using the First Light And Reionisation Epoch Simulations (FLARES) sui…
With its exquisite sensitivity, wavelength coverage, and spatial and spectral resolution, the James Webb Space Telescope is poised to revolutionise our view of the distant, high-redshift ($z>5$) Universe. While Webb's spectroscopic observations will be transformative for the field, photometric observations play a key role in identifying distant objects and providing more comprehensive samples than accessible to spectroscopy alone. In addition to identifying objects, photometric observations can also be used to infer physical properties and thus be used to constrain galaxy formation models. How…
Distant luminous Lyman-alpha emitters are excellent targets for detailed observations of galaxies in the epoch of reionisation. Spatially resolved observations of these galaxies allow us to simultaneously probe the emission from young stars, partially ionised gas in the interstellar medium and to constrain the properties of the surrounding hydrogen in the circumgalactic medium. We review recent results from (spectroscopic) follow-up studies of the rest-frame UV, Lyman-alpha and [CII] emission in luminous galaxies observed ~500 Myr after the Big Bang with ALMA, HST/WFC3 and VLT/X-SHOOTER. These…
Small galaxies are thought to be the main contributors to the ionising budget of the Universe before reionisation was complete. There have been a number of numerical studies trying to quantify their ionising efficiency through the escape fraction $f_{esc}$. While there is a clear trend that $f_{esc}$ is higher for smaller haloes, there is a large scatter in the distribution of $f_{esc}$ for a single halo mass. We propose that this is due to the intrinsic burstiness of star formation in low mass galaxies. We performed high resolution radiative hydrodynamics simulations with Ramses-RT to model t…
The cosmic 21 cm signal is set to revolutionise our understanding of the early Universe, allowing us to probe the 3D temperature and ionisation structure of the intergalactic medium (IGM). It will open a window onto the unseen first galaxies, showing us how their UV and X-ray photons drove the cosmic milestones of the epoch of reionisation (EoR) and epoch of heating (EoH). To facilitate parameter inference from the 21 cm signal, we previously developed 21CMMC: a Monte Carlo Markov Chain sampler of 3D EoR simulations. Here we extend 21CMMC to include simultaneous modelling of the EoH, resulting…

We present cosmological, radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of galaxy formation during the epoch of reionization in an effort towards modelling the interstellar medium (ISM) and interpreting ALMA observations. Simulations with and without stellar radiation are compared at large (Mpc), intermediate (tens of kpc), and small (sub kpc) scales. At large scales, the dense regions around galaxies reionize first before UV photons penetrate the voids; however, considerable amounts of neutral gas remain present within the haloes. The spatial distribution of neutral gas is highly dynamic and is anti-cor…
Our current knowledge of star formation and accretion luminosity at high-redshift (z>3-4), as well as the possible connections between them, relies mostly on observations in the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV), which are strongly affected by dust obscuration. Due to the lack of sensitivity of past and current infrared (IR) instrumentation, so far it has not been possible to get a glimpse into the early phases of the dust-obscured Universe. Among the next generation of IR observatories, SPICA, observing in the 12-350 micron range, will be the only facility that can enable us to make the required le…
The recent low value of Planck (2016) integrated optical depth to Thomson scattering suggests that the reionization occurred fairly suddenly, disfavoring extended reionization scenarios. This will have a significant impact on the 21cm power spectrum. Using a semi-numerical framework, we improve our model from Hassan et al. (2016) to include time-integrated ionisation and recombination effects, and find that this leads to more sudden reionisation. It also yields larger HII bubbles which leads to an order of magnitude more 21cm power on large scales, while suppressing the small scale ionization …
Cosmic Dawn ("CoDa") II yields the first statistically-meaningful determination of the relative contribution to reionization by galaxies of different halo mass, from a fully-coupled radiation-hydrodynamics simulation of the epoch of reionization large enough ($\sim$ 100 Mpc) to model global reionization while resolving the formation of all galactic halos above $\sim 10^8 M_\odot$. Cell transmission inside high-mass haloes is bi-modal -- ionized cells are transparent, while neutral cells absorb the photons their stars produce - and the halo escape fraction $f_{esc}$ reflects the balance of star…
Luminous quasars powered by accretion onto billion solar mass black holes already exist at the epoch of Reionisation, when the Universe was 0.5-1 Gyr old. These objects likely reside in over-dense regions of the Universe, and will grow to form today's giant galaxies. How their huge black holes formed in such short times is debated, particularly as they lie above the local black hole mass-galaxy dynamical mass correlation, thus following the black hole-dominance growth path. It is unknown what slowed down the black hole growth, leading towards the symbiotic growth observed in the local Universe…

We present new deep ALMA and HST/WFC3 observations of MASOSA and VR7, two luminous Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=6.5$, for which the UV continuum level differ by a factor four. No IR dust continuum emission is detected in either, indicating little amounts of obscured star formation and/or high dust temperatures. MASOSA, with a UV luminosity M$_{1500}=-20.9$, compact size and very high Ly$α$ EW$_{0}\approx145$ A, is undetected in [CII] to a limit of L$_{\rm [CII]}<2.2\times10^7$ L$_{\odot}$ implying a metallicity $Z\lesssim0.07 Z_{\odot}$. Intriguingly, our HST data indicates a red UV slope $β=-1…

The Ly$α$ emission line is one of the most promising probes of cosmic reionisation but isolating the signature of a change in the ionisation state of the IGM is challenging because of intrinsic evolution and internal radiation transfer effects. We present the first study of the evolution of Ly$α$ emitters (LAE) during the epoch of reionisation based on a full radiation-hydrodynamics cosmological simulation that is able to capture both the large-scale process of reionisation and the small-scale properties of galaxies. We predict the Ly$α$ emission of galaxies in the $10^3$ cMpc$^3$ SPHINX simul…
Ionising properties of galaxies in JADES for a stellar mass complete sample: resolving the cosmic ionising photon budget crisis at the Epoch of Reionisation
Distant luminous Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) are excellent targets for spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the epoch of reionisation (EoR). We present deep high-resolution (R=5000) VLT/X-SHOOTER observations, along with an extensive collection of photometric data of `COLA1', a proposed double peaked LAE at z=6.6 (Hu et al. 2016). We rule out that COLA1's emission line is an [OII] doublet at z=1.475 on the basis of i) the asymmetric red line-profile and flux ratio of the peaks (blue/red=$0.31\pm0.03$) and ii) an unphysical [OII]/Ha ratio ([OII]/Ha > 22). We show that COLA1's observed B-ba…
Long-term 17.6~GHz radio monitoring of the broad absorption line quasar, Mrk\,231, detected a strong flare in late 2017. This triggered four epochs of Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations from 8.4~GHz to 43~GHz over a 10-week period as well as an X-ray observation with NuSTAR. This was the third campaign of VLBA monitoring that we have obtained. The 43~GHz VLBA was degraded in all epochs with only 7 of 10 antennas available in three epochs and 8 in the first epoch. However, useful results were obtained due to a fortuitous capturing of a complete short 100~mJy flare at 17.6~GHz: growth …
In the FLARES (First Light And Reionisation Epoch Simulations) suite of hydrodynamical simulations, we find the high redshift ($z>5$) intrinsic size-luminosity relation is, surprisingly, negatively sloped. However, after including the effects of dust attenuation we find a positively sloped UV observed size-luminosity relation in good agreement with other simulated and observational studies. In this work, we extend this analysis to probe the underlying physical mechanisms driving the formation and evolution of the compact galaxies driving the negative size-mass/size-luminosity relation. We find…
Nebular emission lines associated with galactic HII regions carry information about both physical properties of the ionised gas and the source of ionising photons as well as providing the opportunity of measuring accurate redshifts and thus distances once a cosmological model is assumed. While nebular line emission has been extensively studied at lower redshift there are currently only few constraints within the epoch of reionisation (EoR, $z>6$), chiefly due to the lack of sensitive near-IR spectrographs. However, this will soon change with the arrival of the Webb Telescope providing sensitiv…
First Light and Reionization Epoch Simulations (FLARES) -- XV: The physical properties of super-massive black holes and their impact on galaxies in the early universe
We present the spectroscopic confirmation of the brightest known gravitationally lensed Lyman break galaxy in the Epoch of Reionisation, A1703-zD1, through the detection of [C II] at a redshift of z = 6.8269 +/- 0.0004. This source was selected behind the strong lensing cluster Abell 1703, with an intrinsic L$_{UV}$ ~ L$^*$$_{z=7}$ luminosity and a very blue Spitzer/IRAC [3.6]-[4.5] colour, implying high equivalent width line emission of [O III]+H$β$. [C II] is reliably detected at 6.1$σ$ co-spatial with the rest-frame UV counterpart, showing similar spatial extent. Correcting for the lensing …

The Extraordinary Maser Flaring Event in the Massive Protostellar System NGC6334I: Multi-Epoch Milliarcsecond Resolution Investigation of the 6.7-GHz Methanol Masers
Context: Population III (Pop III) stars may be fast rotating. An expected consequence of fast rotation is strong internal mixing that deeply affects their evolutionary tracks in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and hence their ionising power. aims: We investigate the impact on the ionising power of Pop III stars in an extreme case of internal mixing, the one leading to chemically homogeneous evolution (CHE). In that situation, during the main sequence phase, the star keeps the same chemical composition from its center to its surface. Homogeneous stars have larger effective temperatures and lumi…
We present a novel, observationally-based framework for the formation epochs and sites of globular clusters (GCs) in a cosmological context. Measuring directly the mean ages of the metal-poor and metal-rich GC subpopulations in our own Galaxy, and in other galaxies, is observationally challenging. Here we apply an alternative approach utilising the property that the galaxy mass-metallicity relation is a strong function of redshift (or look-back age) but is relatively insensitive to galaxy mass for massive galaxies. Assuming that GCs follow galaxy mass-metallicity relations that evolve with red…
Candidates for the modest galaxies that formed most of the stars in the early universe, at redshifts $z > 7$, have been found in large numbers with extremely deep restframe-UV imaging. But it has proved difficult for existing spectrographs to characterise them in the UV. The detailed properties of these galaxies could be measured from dust and cool gas emission at far-infrared wavelengths if the galaxies have become sufficiently enriched in dust and metals. So far, however, the most distant UV-selected galaxy detected in dust emission is only at $z = 3.25$, and recent results have cast doubt o…

We report an exceptional mid-infrared flare in the Seyfert 1.8 NGC 3786. In the multi-epoch data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, the nuclear mid-infrared brightness of NGC 3786 appears to vary substantially up to $0.5-0.8$ mag around mid-2020. However, there is no evidence of significant variation in the corresponding light curve of the optical band from the Zwicky Transient Facility. This implies that the flare may have been heavily obscured by nuclear dust. Through follow-up spectroscopic observations with Gemini-North after the flare, we find that broad emission lines in ${\rm…
