An overview of a hadron resonance gas (HRG) model that includes van der Waals interactions between hadrons is presented. Applications of the excluded volume HRG model to heavy-ion collision data and lattice QCD equation of state are discussed. A recently developed quantum van der Waals hadron resonance gas model is covered as well. Applications of this model in the context of the QCD critical point are elaborated.

Criticality in a Hadron Resonance Gas model with the van der Waals interaction

The van der Waals interaction is implemented in a Hadron Resonance Gas model. It is shown that this model can describe Lattice QCD data of different thermodynamical quantities satisfactorily with the van der Waals parameters $a = 1250 \pm 150$ MeV fm$^3$ and $r = 0.7 \pm 0.05$ fm. Further, a phase transition is observed in this model with the critical point at temperature, $T = 62.1$ MeV and baryon chemical potential, $μ_B = 708$ MeV.

Spin-Flavor van der Waals Forces and NN interaction

We study the Nucleon-Nucleon interaction in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation at second order in perturbation theory including the Δ resonance as an intermediate state. The potential resembles strongly chiral potentials computed either via soliton models or chiral perturbation theory and has a van der Waals like singularity at short distances which is handled by means of renormalization techniques. Results for the deuteron are discussed.

Van der Waals forces and Photon-less Effective Field Theories

In the ultra-cold regime Van der Waals forces between neutral atoms can be represented by short range effective interactions. We show that universal low energy scaling features of the underlying vdW long range force stemming from two photon exchange impose restrictions on an Effective Field Theory without explicit photons. The role of naively redundant operators, relevant to the definition of three body forces, is also analyzed.

Van der Waals equation of state for asymmetric nuclear matter

The application of van der Waals equation of state to the asymmetric nuclear matter is considered in a critical state region. The corrections to the van der Waals pressure and free energy due to the Fermi statistics are obtained starting from the Thomas--Fermi entropy expression which ensures the fulfilment of Nernst theorem. The derived corrections account for the effective nucleon mass and neutron-proton isotopic asymmetry. Van der Waals Excluded Volume Model for Lorentz Contracted Rigid Spheres

Conventional cluster and virial expansions are generalized to momentum dependent inter-particle potentials. The model with Lorentz contracted hard core potentials is considered, e.g. as hadron gas model. A Van der Waals-type model with a temperature dependent excluded volume is derived. Lorentz contraction effects at given temperature are stronger for light particles and make their effective excluded volume smaller than that of heavy ones.

Van der Waals Excluded Volume Model of Multicomponent Hadron Gas

A generalization of the Van der Waals excluded volume procedure for the multicomponent hadron gas is proposed. The derivation is based on the grand canonical partition function for the system of particles of several species interacting by hard core potentials. The obtained formulae for thermodynamical quantities are consistent with underlying principles of statistical mechanics as well as with thermodynamical identities. The model can be applied to the analysis of experimental data for particle number ratios in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Quantum van der Waals and Walecka models of nuclear matter

A comparable study of the quantum van der Waals and Walecka models of nuclear matter is presented. Each model contains two parameters which characterize the repulsive and attractive interactions between nucleons. These parameters are fixed in order to reproduce the known properties of the nuclear ground state. The van der Waals interaction as the starting point for an effective field theory

We consider the system of three ${}^4$He atoms to assess whether a pure van der Waals potential can be used as a starting point for an effective field theory to describe three-body processes in ultracold atomic systems.
