The stochastic block model (SBM) is a random graph model in which the edges are generated according to the underlying cluster structure on the vertices. The (ferromagnetic) Ising model, on the other hand, assigns $\pm 1$ labels to vertices according to an underlying graph structure in a way that if two vertices are connected in the graph then they are more likely to be assigned the same label. In SBM, one aims to recover the underlying clusters from the graph structure while in Ising model, an extensively-studied problem is to recover the underlying graph structure based on i.i.d. samples (labelings of the vertices).
In this paper, we propose a natural composition of SBM and the Ising model, which we call the Stochastic Ising Block Model (SIBM). In SIBM, we take SBM in its simplest form, where $n$ vertices are divided into two equal-sized clusters and the edges are connected independently with probability $p$ within clusters and $q$ across clusters. Then we use the graph $G$ generated by the SBM as the underlying graph of the Ising model and draw $m$ i.i.d. samples from it. The objective is to exactly recover the two clusters in SBM from the samples generated by the Ising model, without observing the graph $G$. As the main result of this paper, we establish a sharp threshold $m^\ast$ on the sample complexity of this exact recovery problem in a properly chosen regime, where $m^\ast$ can be calculated from the parameters of SIBM. We show that when $m\ge m^\ast$, one can recover the clusters from $m$ samples in $O(n)$ time as the number of vertices $n$ goes to infinity. When $m<m^\ast$, we further show that for almost all choices of parameters of SIBM, the success probability of any recovery algorithms approaches $0$ as $n\to\infty$.
We show how to exactly reconstruct the block structure at the critical line in the so-called Ising block model. This model was re-introduced by Berthet, Rigollet and Srivastava in a recent paper. There the authors show how to exactly reconstruct blocks away from the critical line and they give an upper and a lower bound on the number of observations one needs; thereby they establish a minimax optimal rate (up to constants). Our technique relies on a combination of their methods with fluctuation results for block spin Ising models. The latter are extended to the full critical regime. We find th…
In this paper we study the effect of dependence on detecting a class of structured signals in Ferromagnetic Ising models. Natural examples of our class include Ising Models on lattices, and Mean-Field type Ising Models such as dense Erdős-Rényi, and dense random regular graphs. Our results not only provide sharp constants of detection in each of these cases and thereby pinpoint the precise relationship of the detection problem with the underlying dependence, but also demonstrate how to be agnostic over the strength of dependence present in the respective models.
An analysis is presented of the phase transition of the quantum Ising model with transverse field on the d-dimensional hypercubic lattice. It is shown that there is a unique sharp transition. The value of the critical point is calculated rigorously in one dimension. The first step is to express the quantum Ising model in terms of a (continuous) classical Ising model in d+1 dimensions. A so-called `random-parity' representation is developed for the latter model, similar to the random-current representation for the classical Ising model on a discrete lattice. Certain differential inequalities ar…
We prove that the correction to exponential decay of the truncated two points function in the homogeneous positive field Ising model is $c\|x\|^{-(d-1)/2}$. The proof is based on the development in the random current representation of a "modern" Ornstein-Zernike theory, as developed by Campanino, Ioffe and Velenik.
Consider the discrete cube $\{-1,1\}^N$ and a random collection of half spaces which includes each half space $H(x) := \{y \in \{-1,1\}^N: x \cdot y \geq κ\sqrt{N}\}$ for $x \in \{-1,1\}^N$ independently with probability $p$. Is the intersection of these half spaces empty? This is called the Ising perceptron model under Bernoulli disorder. We prove that this event has a sharp threshold; that is, the probability that the intersection is empty increases quickly from $ε$ to $1- ε$ when $p$ increases only by a factor of $1 + o(1)$ as $N \to \infty$.
We study a family of Ising perceptron models with $\{0,1\}$-valued activation functions. This includes the classical half-space models, as well as some of the symmetric models considered in recent works. For each of these models we show that the free energy is self-averaging, there is a sharp threshold sequence, and the free energy is universal with respect to the disorder. A prior work of Xu (2019) used very different methods to show a sharp threshold sequence in the half-space Ising perceptron with Bernoulli disorder. Recent works of Perkins--Xu (2021) and Abbe--Li--Sly (2021) determined the…
A sharp-threshold theorem is proved for box-crossing probabilities on the square lattice. The models in question are the random-cluster model near the self-dual point $p_{\mathrm {sd}}(q)=\sqrt{q}/(1+\sqrt{q})$, the Ising model with external field, and the colored random-cluster model. The principal technique is an extension of the influence theorem for monotonic probability measures applied to increasing events with no assumption of symmetry.
One of the most well-known classical results for site percolation on the square lattice is the equation p_c + p_c^* = 1. In words, this equation means that for all values different from p_c of the parameter p the following holds: Either a.s. there is an infinite open cluster or a.s. there is an infinite closed `star' cluster. This result is closely related to the percolation transition being sharp: Below p_c the size of the open cluster of a given vertex is not only (a.s.) finite, but has a distrubtion with an exponential tail. The analog of this result has been proved by Higuchi in 1993 for t…
One of the most well-known classical results for site percolation on the square lattice is the equation $p_c+p_c^*=1$. In words, this equation means that for all values $\neq p_c$ of the parameter $p$, the following holds: either a.s. there is an infinite open cluster or a.s. there is an infinite closed "star" cluster. This result is closely related to the percolation transition being sharp: below $p_c$, the size of the open cluster of a given vertex is not only (a.s.) finite, but has a distribution with an exponential tail. We determine the information-theoretic cutoff value on separation of cluster centers for exact recovery of cluster labels in a $K$-component Gaussian mixture model with equal cluster sizes. Moreover, we show that a semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation of the $K$-means clustering method achieves such sharp threshold for exact recovery without assuming the symmetry of cluster centers.
We consider the continuum Widom-Rowlinson model under independent spin-flip dynamics and investigate whether and when the time-evolved point process has an (almost) quasilocal specification (Gibbs-property of the time-evolved measure). Our study provides a first analysis of a Gibbs-non-Gibbs transition for point particles in Euclidean space. We find a picture of loss and recovery, in which even more regularity is lost faster than it is for time-evolved spin models on lattices. We show immediate loss of quasilocality in the percolation regime, with full measure of discontinuity points for any s…
For two correlated graphs which are independently sub-sampled from a common Erdős-Rényi graph $\mathbf{G}(n, p)$, we wish to recover their \emph{latent} vertex matching from the observation of these two graphs \emph{without labels}. When $p = n^{-α+o(1)}$ for $α\in (0, 1]$, we establish a sharp information-theoretic threshold for whether it is possible to correctly match a positive fraction of vertices. Our result sharpens a constant factor in a recent work by Wu, Xu and Yu.

Bootstrap percolation is a type of cellular automaton on graphs, introduced as a simple model of the dynamics of ferromagnetism. Vertices in a graph can be in one of two states: `healthy' or `infected' and from an initial configuration of states, healthy vertices become infected by local rules. While the usual bootstrap processes are monotone in the sets of infected vertices, in this paper, a modification is examined in which infected vertices can return to a healthy state. Vertices are initially infected independently at random and the central question is whether all vertices eventually becom…
We recently introduced a robust approach to the derivation of sharp asymptotic formula for correlation functions of statistical mechanics models in the high-temperature regime. We describe its application to the nonperturbative proof of Ornstein-Zernike asymptotics of 2-point functions for self-avoiding walks, Bernoulli percolation and ferromagnetic Ising models. We then extend the proof, in the Ising case, to arbitrary odd-odd correlation functions. We discuss the fluctuations of connection paths (invariance principle), and relate the variance of the limiting process to the geometry of the eq…
Information percolation is a new method for analyzing stochastic spin systems through classifying and controlling the clusters of information-flow in the space-time slab. It yielded sharp mixing estimates (cutoff with an $O(1)$-window) for the Ising model on $Z^d$ up to the critical temperature, as well as results on the effect of initial conditions on mixing. In this expository note we demonstrate the method on lattices (more generally, on any locally-finite transitive graph) at very high temperatures.
Resolving a conjecture of Abbe, Bandeira and Hall, the authors have recently shown that the semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation of the maximum likelihood estimator achieves the sharp threshold for exactly recovering the community structure under the binary stochastic block model of two equal-sized clusters. The same was shown for the case of a single cluster and outliers. Extending the proof techniques, in this paper it is shown that SDP relaxations also achieve the sharp recovery threshold in the following cases: (1) Binary stochastic block model with two clusters of sizes proportional …
In this article, we investigate the energy landscape and metastable behavior of the Ising and Potts models on two-dimensional square or hexagonal lattices in the low temperature regime, especially in the absence of an external magnetic field. The energy landscape of these models without an external field is known to have a huge and complex saddle structure between ground states. In the small volume regime where the lattice is finite and fixed, the aforementioned complicated saddle structure has been successfully analyzed in [20] for two or three dimensional square lattices when the inverse tem…
We investigate the Gibbs properties of the fuzzy Potts model on the d-dimensional torus with Kac interaction. We use a variational approach for profiles inspired by that of Fernandez, den Hollander and Martınez for their study of the Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions of a dynamical Kac-Ising model on the torus. As our main result, we show that the mean-field thresholds dividing Gibbsian from non-Gibbsian behavior are sharp in the fuzzy Kac-Potts model with class size unequal two. On the way to this result we prove a large deviation principle for color profiles with diluted total mass densities and u…
We consider the problem of reconstructing sparse symmetric block models with two blocks and connection probabilities $a/n$ and $b/n$ for inter- and intra-block edge probabilities, respectively. It was recently shown that one can do better than a random guess if and only if $(a-b)^2>2(a+b)$. Using a variant of belief propagation, we give a reconstruction algorithm that is optimal in the sense that if $(a-b)^2>C(a+b)$ for some constant $C$ then our algorithm maximizes the fraction of the nodes labeled correctly. Ours is the only algorithm proven to achieve the optimal fraction of nodes labeled c…
We introduce a new framework for analyzing Glauber dynamics for the Ising model. The traditional approach for obtaining sharp mixing results has been to appeal to estimates on spatial properties of the stationary measure from within a multi-scale analysis of the dynamics. Here we propose to study these simultaneously by examining "information percolation" clusters in the space-time slab. Using this framework, we obtain new results for the Ising model on $(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^d$ throughout the high temperature regime: total-variation mixing exhibits cutoff with an $O(1)$-window around the t…
This article studies the estimation of latent community memberships from pairwise interactions in a network of $N$ nodes, where the observed interactions can be of arbitrary type, including binary, categorical, and vector-valued, and not excluding even more general objects such as time series or spatial point patterns. As a generative model for such data, we introduce a stochastic block model with a general measurable interaction space $\mathcal S$, for which we derive information-theoretic bounds for the minimum achievable error rate. These bounds yield sharp criteria for the existence of con…
