We investigate effects of upstream density fluctuations on the diffusive shock acceleration by Monte Carlo simulations. The simulations show that particles are reaccelerated in the shock downstream region by a sound wave generated at the shock front. The time scale of turbulent acceleration by the sound wave is estimated. We propose a new back reaction of particles accelerated around the shock front. The accelerated particles generate the upstream density fluctuations by the Drury instability, which are converted to the downstream sound waves by the shock. The downstream sound waves modify the momentum spectrum of particles accelerated around the shock front. This new back reaction affects emission from the accelerated particles, which gives a new constraint on the acceleration efficiency of the diffusive shock acceleration.
The external forward shock emitting the gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow is collisionless, and it is mediated by the Weibel instability which generates the magnetic field. The GRB afterglow shows that the magnetic field in the large downstream region is much stronger than the shock-compressed pre-shock field. However, particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of relativistic shocks propagating into homogeneous media show that the Weibel generated field decays near the shock front. Some GRB observations and theoretical studies suggest that the preshock medium is inhomogeneous. We perform the PIC simula…
Recent studies about collisionless shocks in partially ionized plasmas showed that some of neutral particles leak into the shock upstream region from the downstream region. In this paper, we perform a linear analysis and show that acoustic waves are unstable in the neutral precursor region. The acoustic instability amplifies fluctuations of magnetic field and density in the upstream region. The fluctuations are indispensable for the diffusive shock acceleration and could be important for the downstream turbulence.
We perform two-dimensional relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of a mildly relativistic shock propagating through an inhomogeneous medium. We show that the postshock region becomes turbulent owing to preshock density inhomogeneity, and the magnetic field is strongly amplified due to the stretching and folding of field lines in the turbulent velocity field. The amplified magnetic field evolves into a filamentary structure in two-dimensional simulations. The magnetic energy spectrum is flatter than the Kolmogorov spectrum and indicates that a so-called small-scale dynamo is occurring in…
In our study of the timing properties of few Galactic black hole candidates evolutions of the low and intermediate frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LIFQPOs) are observed. In 2005, for explaining evolution of QPO frequency during rising phase of 2005 GRO J1655-40 outburst, Chakrabarti and his students introduced a new model, namely propagating oscillatory shock (POS) model. Here we present the results obtained from the same POS model fitted QPO evolutions during both the rising and declining phases of the outbursts of 2005 GRO J165540, 2010-11 GX 339-4, and 2010 & 2011 H 1743-322.
Using three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics simulations, we show that the efficiency of cosmic-ray (CR) production at supernova remnants (SNRs) is over-predicted if it could be estimated based on proper motion measurements of H$α$ filaments in combination with shock-jump conditions. Density fluctuations of upstream medium make shock waves rippled and oblique almost everywhere. The kinetic energy of the shock wave is transferred into that of downstream turbulence as well as thermal energy which is related to the shock velocity component normal to the shock surface. Our synthetic observation sh…
In this contribution we present the first numerical simulations of a relativistic outflow propagating through the inner hundreds of parsecs of its host galaxy, including atomic and ionised hydrogen, and the cooling effects of ionisation. Our results are preliminary, but we observe efficient shock ionization of atomic hydrogen in interstellar clouds. The mean density of the interstellar medium in these initial simulations is lower than that expected in typical galaxies, which makes cooling times longer and thus no recombination is observed inside the shocked region. The velocities achieved by t…
Context. The black hole candidate GX 339-4 exhibited an X-ray outburst in January 2010, which is still continuing. We here discuss the timing and the spectral properties of the outburst using RXTE data. Aims. Our goal is to study the timing and spectral properties of GX 339-4 using its recent outburst data and extract information about the nature of the accretion flow. Methods. We use RXTE archival data of the recent GX 339-4 outburst and analyze them with the NASA HEAsoft package, version 6.8. We then compare the observed quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) frequencies with those from existing s…
The collapsar model explains the association of long duration gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with stellar collapse. It involves a relativistic jet that forms at the core of a collapsing massive star. The jet penetrates the stellar envelope and the prompt GRB emission is produced once the jet is well outside the star. Most current models for generation of relativistic jets involve Poynting flux dominated outflows. We explore here the propagation of such a jet through a stellar envelope. The jet forms a bow shock around it. Energy dissipation at the head of this shock supplies energy to a cocoon that s…
A developing supercritical collisionless shock propagating in a homogeneously magnetized plasma of ambient gas origin having higher uniformity than the previous experiments is formed by using high-power laser experiment. The ambient plasma is not contaminated by the plasma produced in the early time after the laser shot. While the observed developing shock does not have stationary downstream structure, it possesses some characteristics of a magnetized supercritical shock, which are supported by a one-dimensional full particle-in-cell simulation taking the effect of finite time of laser-target …
Many pulsars propagate through the interstellar medium (ISM) with supersonic velocities, and their pulsar winds interact with the interstellar medium (ISM), forming bow shocks and magnetotails (PWN). We model the propagation of pulsars through the inhomogeneous ISM using non-relativistic axisymmetric magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. We take into account the wind from the star, and the azimuthal and poloidal components of the magnetic field, and investigate the PWN at different levels of magnetization (the ratio of magnetic to matter energy-densities) in the wind. We consider the interac…
Using our new 3-D relativistic electromagnetic particle (REMP) code parallelized with MPI, we investigated long-term particle acceleration associated with a relativistic electron-positron jet propagating in an unmagnetized ambient electron-positron plasma. The simulations were performed using a much longer simulation system than our previous simulations in order to investigate the full nonlinear stage of the Weibel instability and its particle acceleration mechanism. Cold jet electrons are thermalized and ambient electrons are accelerated in the resulting shocks. Acceleration of ambient electr…
Using our new 3-D relativistic electromagnetic particle (REMP) code parallelized with MPI, we investigated long-term particle acceleration associated with a relativistic electron-positron jet propagating in an unmagnetized ambient electron-positron plasma. We have also performed simulations with electron-ion jets. The simulations were performed using a much longer simulation system than our previous simulations in order to investigate the full nonlinear stage of the Weibel instability for electron-positron jets and its particle acceleration mechanism. Cold jet electrons are thermalized and amb…
Perpendicular collisionless shocks propagating into partially ionized plasmas are investigated by two-dimensional hybrid particle simulations. It is shown that some neutral particles leak into the upstream region from the downstream region, the leaking neutral particles become pickup ions in the upstream region and modify the shock structure, the pickup ions are preferentially accelerated, and plasma instabilities are excited by the pickup ions in the upstream and downstream regions.

The growth rate of long wavelength kinetic instabilities arising due to the interaction of a collimated beam of relativistic particles and a cold unmagnetized plasma are calculated in the ultra relativistic limit. For sufficiently culminated beams, all long wave-length modes are shown to be Weibel-unstable, and a simple analytic expression for their growth rate is derived. For large transverse velocity spreads, these modes become stable. An analytic condition for stability is given. These analytic results, which generalize earlier ones given in the literature, are shown to be in agreement with…
In this paper, the generalized analytical solution for one dimensional adiabatic flow behind the strong imploding shock waves propagating in a non-ideal gas is obtained by using the geometrical shock dynamics theory. The equation of state for non-ideal gas as given by Landau and Lifshitz and the generalized shock jump relations derived by Anand are taken into consideration to explore the effects due to an increase in (i) the propagation distance from the centre of convergence, (ii) the non-idealness parameter and, (iii) the adiabatic index, on the shock velocity, pressure, density, particle ve…
Non-relativistic shocks accelerate ions to highly relativistic energies provided that the orientation of the magnetic field is closely aligned with the shock normal (quasi-parallel shock configuration). In contrast, quasi-perpendicular shocks do not efficiently accelerate ions. We model this obliquity-dependent acceleration process in a spherically expanding blast wave setup with the moving-mesh code {\sc arepo} for different magnetic field morphologies, ranging from homogeneous to turbulent configurations. A Sedov-Taylor explosion in a homogeneous magnetic field generates an oblate ellipsoida…
We briefly discuss models of energetic particle acceleration by supernova shock in active starforming regions at different stages of their evolution. Strong shocks may strongly amplify magnetic fields due to cosmic ray driven instabilities. We discuss the magnetic field amplification emphasizing the role of the long-wavelength instabilities. Supernova shock propagating in the vicinity of a powerful stellar wind in a young stellar cluster is argued to increase the maximal CR energies at a given evolution stage of supernova remnant (SNR) and can convert a sizeable fraction of the kinetic energy …
It is shown that high-energy astrophysical neutrinos observed in the IceCube experiment can be produced by protons accelerated in extragalactic Type IIn supernova remnants by shocks propagating in the dense circumstellar medium. The nonlinear diffusive shock acceleration model is used for description of particle acceleration.
Generalized forms of jump relations are obtained for one dimensional shock waves propagating in a non-ideal gas which reduce to Rankine-Hugoniot conditions for shocks in idea gas when non-idealness parameter becomes zero. The equation of state for non-ideal gas is considered as given by Landau and Lifshitz. The jump relations for pressure, density, temperature, particle velocity, and change in entropy across the shock are derived in terms of upstream Mach number. Finally, the useful forms of the shock jump relations for weak and strong shocks, respectively, are obtained in terms of the non-ide…
On the basis of simple principles we derive and investigate the equations of relativistic plasma magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in an arbitrary gravitational field. An exact solution describing the motion of magnetoactive plasma against the background of the metric of a plane gravitational wave (PGW) with an arbitrary amplitude is obtained. It is shown that in strong magnetic fields even a sufficiently small amplitude PGW can create a shock MHD wave, propagating at a subluminal velocity. Astrophysical consequences of the anomalous plasma acceleration are considered.
Diffusive shock acceleration at collisionless shocks is thought to be the source of many of the energetic particles observed in space. Large-scale spatial variations of the magnetic field has been shown to be important in understanding observations. The effects are complex, so here we consider a simple, illustrative model. Here, we solve numerically the Parker transport equation for a shock in the presence of large-scale sinusoidal magnetic-field variations. We demonstrate that the familiar planar-shock results can be significantly altered as a consequence of large-scale, meandering magnetic l…
Mildly relativistic shocks in magnetized electron-ion plasmas are investigated with 2D kinetic particle-in-cell simulations of unprecedentedly high resolution and large scale for conditions that may be found at internal shocks in blazar cores. Ion-scale effects cause corrugations along the shock surface whose properties somewhat depend on the configuration of the mean perpendicular magnetic field, that is either in or out of the simulation plane. We show that the synchrotron maser instability persists to operate in mildly relativistic shocks in agreement with theoretical predictions and produc…
Cold fronts (CFs) are found in most galaxy clusters, as well as in some galaxies and groups of galaxies. We propose that some CFs are relics of merging between two shocks propagating in the same direction. Such shock mergers typically result in a quasi-spherical, factor ~1.4-2.7 discontinuity in density and in temperature. These CFs may be found as far out as the virial shock, unlike what is expected in other CF formation models. As a demonstration of this effect, we use one dimensional simulations of clusters and show that shock induced cold fronts form when perturbations such as explosions o…
