We study the use of methods based on the real symplectic groups $Sp(2n,\mathcal{R})$ in the analysis of the Arthurs-Kelly model of proposed simultaneous measurements of position and momentum in quantum mechanics. Consistent with the fact that such measurements are in fact not possible, we show that the observable consequences of the Arthurs-Kelly interaction term are contained in the symplectic transformation law connecting the system plus apparatus variance matrices at an initial and a final time. The individual variance matrices are made up of averages and spreads or uncertainties for single hermitian observables one at a time, which are quantum mechanically well defined. The consequences of the multimode symplectic covariant Uncertainty Principle in the Arthurs-Kelly context are examined.
Teleportation usually involves entangled particles 1,2 shared by Alice and Bob, Bell-state measurement on particle 1 and system particle by Alice, classical communication to Bob, and unitary transformation by Bob on particle 2. We propose a novel method: interaction-based remote tomography. Alice arranges an entanglement generating von Neumann-Arthurs-Kelly interaction between the system and two apparatus particles, and then teleports the latter to Bob. Bob reconstructs the unknown initial state of the system not received by him by quadrature measurements on the apparatus particles .
We study entanglement generation between a system qubit and three apparatus qubits using an exactly solvable Arthurs-Kelly type model. We demonstrate the possibility of generating an EPR-like maximally entangled system-apparatus state, in which the second qubit of the usual EPR state is replaced by a three qubit state. We design a very simple protocol to transfer the unknown state of the system onto one of the apparatus qubits which can then be sent elsewhere via a quantum channel. This protocol can be seen as an alternative teleportation scheme.
Joint approximate measurement schemes of position and momentum provide us with a means of inferring pieces of complementary information if we allow for the irreducible noise required by quantum theory. One such scheme is given by the Arthurs-Kelly model, where information about a system is extracted via indirect probe measurements. So far, only separable uncorrelated probes have been considered. Here, following Di Lorenzo (PRL 110, 120403 (2013)), we extend this model to both entangled and classically correlated probes, achieving full generality. We find the measured observable of the system u…
The accuracy of the Arthurs-Kelly model of a simultaneous measurement of position and momentum is analysed using concepts developed by Braginsky and Khalili in the context of measurements of a single quantum observable. A distinction is made between the errors of retrodiction and prediction. It is shown that the distribution of measured values coincides with the initial state Husimi function when the retrodictive accuracy is maximised, and that it is related to the final state anti-Husimi function (the P representation of quantum optics) when the predictive accuracy is maximised. The disturban…
We consider joint measurement of two and three unsharp qubit observables through an Arthur-Kelly type joint measurement model for qubits. We investigate the effect of initial state of the detectors on the unsharpness of the measurement as well as the post-measurement state of the system. Particular emphasis is given on a physical understanding of the POVM to PVM transition in the model and entanglement between system and detectors. Two approaches for characterizing the unsharpness of the measurement and the resulting measurement uncertainty relations are considered. The corresponding measures of…
The simultaneous measurement approach of Arthurs and Kelly has been a significant tool for the better understanding of the measurement process in quantum mechanics. This model considers a strong interaction Hamiltonian by discarding the free evolution part. In this work, we study the effect of the full dynamics -- taking into account the free Hamiltonian -- on the optimal limits of retrodictive and predictive accuracy of the simultaneous measurement process of position and momentum observables. To do that, we consider a minimum uncertainty Gaussian state as the system under inspection, which a…
In this work, we consider the estimation of single mode Gaussian states using four different measurement schemes namely: i) homodyne measurement, ii) sequential measurement, iii) Arthurs-Kelly scheme, and iv) heterodyne measurement, with a view to compare their relative performance. To that end, we work in the phase space formalism, specifically at the covariance matrix level, which provides an elegant and intuitive way to explicitly carry out involved calculations. We show that the optimal performance of the Arthurs-Kelly scheme and the sequential measurement is equal to the heterodyne measur…
The position-momentum quasi-distribution obtained from an Arthurs and Kelly joint measurement model is used to obtain indirectly an ``operational'' time-of-arrival (TOA) distribution following a quantization procedure proposed by Kochański and Wódkiewicz [Phys. Rev. A 60, 2689 (1999)]. This TOA distribution is not time covariant. The procedure is generalized by using other phase-space quasi-distributions, and sufficient conditions are provided for time covariance that limit the possible phase-space quasi-distributions essentially to the Wigner function, which, however, provides a non-positive …
We examine error-disturbance relations in the quantum measurement of spin systems using an atom-light interface scheme. We model a single spin-1/2 system that interacts with a polarized light meter via a Faraday interaction. We formulate the error and disturbance of the model and examine the uncertainty relations. We found that for the coherent light meter in pure polarization, both the error and disturbance behave the cyclic oscillations due to the Faraday rotation in both the light and spin polarizations. We also examine a class of polarization squeezed light meter, where we apply the phase-…
We give a first physical model for the quantum measurement of the spin direction. It is an Arthurs-Kelly model that involves a kind of magnetic-dipole interaction of the spin with three modes of radiation. We show that in a limit of infinite squeezing of radiation the optimal POVM for the measurement of the spin direction is achieved for spin 1/2.
We derive the stochastic Schrodinger equation for the limit of continuous weak measurement where the observables monitored are canonical position and momentum. To this end we extend an argument due to Smolianov and Truman from the von Neumann model of indirect measurement of position to the Arthurs and Kelly model for simultaneous measurement of position and momentum. We only require unbiasedness of the detector states and an integrability condition sufficient to ensure a central limit effect. Despite taking a weak interaction, as opposed to weak measurement limit, the resulting stochastic wav…
We reveal that quadrature squeezing can result in significantly better quantum-estimation performance with quantum heterodyne detection (of H. P. Yuen and J. H. Shapiro) as compared to quantum homodyne detection for Gaussian states, which touches an important aspect in the foundational understanding of these two schemes. Taking single-mode Gaussian states as examples, we show analytically that the competition between the errors incurred during tomogram processing in homodyne detection and the Arthurs-Kelly uncertainties arising from simultaneous incompatible quadrature measurements in heterody…
A universal formulation of uncertainty relations for quantum measurements is presented with additional focus on the representability of quantum observables by classical observables over a given state. Owing to the simplicity and operational tangibility of the framework, the resultant general relations admit natural operational interpretations and characterisations, and are thus also experimentally verifiable. In view of the universal formulation, Heisenberg's philosophy of the uncertainty principle is also revisited; it is reformulated and restated as a refined no-go theorem, albeit perhaps in…
A universal formulation of the quantum uncertainty regarding quantum indeterminacy, quantum measurement, and its inevitable observer effect is presented with additional focus on the representability of quantum observables over a given state. The operational tangibility of the framework assures that the resultant general relations admit natural operational interpretations and characterisations, and thereby perhaps most importantly, their experimental verifiability. In view of the universal formulation, Heisenberg's original philosophy of the uncertainty principle, most typically exemplified in …
We demonstrate that for two canonically conjugate operators $\hat{q},\hat {p} $,the global correlation $\langle \hat{q} \hat {p} + \hat{p} \hat {q} \rangle -2 \langle \hat{q}\rangle \langle \hat {p}\rangle$, and the local correlations $\langle \hat{q} \rangle (p) - \langle \hat{q}\rangle$ and $\langle \hat{p} \rangle (q)-\langle \hat {p}\rangle$ can be measured exactly by Von Neumann-Arthurs-Kelly joint quadrature measurements . These correlations provide a sensitive experimental test of quantum phase space probabilities quite distinct from the probability densities of $ q,p $. E.g. for EPR st…
We consider simultaneous and continuous measurement of two noncommutative observables of the system whose commutator is not necessarily a $c$-number. We revisit the Arthurs-Kelly model and generalize it to describe the simultaneous measurement of two observables of the system. Using this generalized model, we continuously measure the system by following the scheme proposed by Scott and Milburn [Scott and Milburn, Phys. Rev. A 63, 042101 (2001)]. We find that the unconditioned master equation reduces to the Lindblad form in the continuous limit. In addition, we find that the master equation doe…

In contrast to a projective quantum measurement in which the system is projected onto an eigenstate of the measured operator, in a weak measurement the system is only weakly perturbed while only partial information on the measured observable is obtained. A full description of such measurement should describe the measurement protocol and provide an explicit form of the measurement operator that transform the quantum state to its post measurement form. A simultaneous measurement of non-commuting observables cannot be projective, however the strongest possible such measurement can be defined as p…
